Connecting ethernet lan to thunderbolt?

Have an unregistered macbook and trying to log onto Uni LAN with Thunderbolt, to register Mac. Macbook's not even seeing the connection. My old Linux works on it though - any ideas?

I have connected a switch to my time capsule in order to link a TV, a Blu-Ray and a WD Live TV to my network. It seems some more configuration is necessary in my case.
Any ideas?

Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

If you use ethernet to connect the two AirPort Extremes together, you'll have Gigabit speeds available at all of the ethernet ports on both routers.
If you connect the second AirPort Extreme using wireless only and configure the Extreme to "extend a wireless network", then the maximum speeds that the second router can attain will be limited to the capability of the wireless connection. So, if you connect at normal "n" wireless speeds of say 130 Mbps, that will be the maximum speed available at the ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
I think you can easily see the difference between Gigabit ethernet, which is 1000 Mbps compared to "n" wireless at 130 Mbps. Even if you can manage to connect at 5 GHz speeds for wireless, the max speed will be in the 300 Mbps range, more than 3 times slower than Gigabit ethernet. Normal "n" speeds will be about 7 times slower than ethernet.
For streaming high definition video and other demanding sources, you'll need as much bandwidth (speed) as you can get. Ethernet is always the best choice if you can possibly use it. And...there's no wireless interference on an ethernet connection.

  • Unable to connect to LAN - Integrated 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector)

Unable to connect to LAN, downgraded laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 7 64-bit. Have tried using the HP device identifier, and installing all drivers under Network for the laptop on WIndows 7, though none of them showed as being for Local Area Network.I also tried following this thread: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home-Networking/Integrated-10-100BASE-T-Ethernet-LAN-RJ-45-connector/td-p/4040756Downloaded the suggested drivers there for the HP Envy 17t-j100I also tested downloading the drivers here for Windows 7: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=7&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false Neither worked, I am still only able to connect via Wi-Fi, but not via LAN with actual cable attached. In case necessary, hardware ID for the Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller:

Hi: You can use all of the W7 x64 drivers and software from the HP 2000t-2a00 on your model except the BIOS and firmware files. Make sure you install the Intel chipset installation utility first and reboot before trying to install the Realtek LAN driver. http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-2000-2a00-notebook-pc-series/5259212/model/5275371

  • Msi p4n sli - ethernet LAN connection not recognized after reinstall

So I am reinstalling windows xp home edition after replacing a hard drive with over 1,000 bad sectors... The ethernet LAN worked just fine before reinstalling.  I don't have the original driver cd, so using another computer, i downloaded the latest nforce4 chipset / ethernet / IDE / SATA drivers from the msi downloads site.  Installed them and everything worked fine except that the network connection never showed up.  It is not to be found in the device manager, and I don't see it when I view hidden devices.  The LAN chip is enabled in the BIOS and it tried to netboot the first time i booted with the new hard drive (hadn't put the cd in the drive  ).   When that didn't work, I tried downloading the latest chipset drivers from nvidia's site, and the same thing happened.  No local area connection!
Is there something I'm missing?  is there a utility I should be installing before I install the chipset drivers, etc?
I'm feeling stressed as I need to get this finished and returned to my client today but I've been dealing with this since yesterday to no avail
Any help is appreciated!  thank you!
    Jeff

A little embarrassed that I didn't figure it out earlier, but I tried several things, realized I had turned off the LAN chip in the BIOS and forgot to turn it back on after installing the second time.
once i enabled it, I had to manually pick drivers for the "Other PCI Bridge Device", and then for the the nforce network controller windows found after that.
Lesson learned: stress inhibits cognitive function.

  • Ethernet LAN not working after upgrading to windows 8.1

After upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, my Ethernet LAN is no longer working. Wireless LAN connectivity is OK. I have run the HP Support Assistant and downloaded the drivers for 8.1. Hovever, I do not see a 8.1 driver listed for the Ethernet LAN.

You're very welcome. See if the recovery manager still works so you can roll back to W8. Please read this guide for how to use it. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03489643 If it doesn't then you will have to order a set of recovery disks from HP, or you can install this plain W8 OEM software this guy has posted on a link. Lots of folks have used it successfully, which is why I posted it. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0W9PBigPy94aVJWSndyTFNFMzg/edit?pli=1 Then use this tool to make the iso file bootable to a DVD or 4+ GB USB flash drive. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool Yes, that really stinks why you and I could not upgrade without an issue. I disabled about 5 or 6 devices in the device manager and the code 12 would not go away. I have no clue why the PC works fine on W8 but not on W8.1. My notebook is a few years older than yours and it worked fine on W8.1 but not on W10. Go figure...

  • Apple TV as Airport access point if connected via LAN

    Hi!
I thought about the possibility to use the new Apple TV as Airport/WLAN access point in the case that it is connected via LAN. You don't need an Airport Express and you got Airport/WLAN/HDMI/Audio in all rooms (and around that room) you connect an Apple TV to. Nice and best for hotels!
Vice versa: If you connect it via Airport to use the ethernet port as a hub/switch to connect devices. I think this should be possible and hope that it's only a firmware update...
Next step is not only to playback videos/photos from other devices. Just use it as a main or second screen for all kind of devices (Computer Extensions forMac OS X/Windows other will follow...).
You don't have to connect a notebook to a beamer anymore. There's only the AppleTV connected to a beamer. The video comes via Airport/WLAN /LAN.
Make the USB Plug useful to connect printers or storage devices!!!
That should be great and makes Apple TV the most useful device ton install it in every room in the house!!!
I think, if the Apple TV can be connected to any kind of device, it shouldn't be Apple's hobby anymore.

  • HT1515 Can I use AirPort Express product to add a wi fi outlet to my ethernet Lan?

Can I use an Airport Express to add a wif fi outlet to my etehrnet (wired) Lan ... I don't have wi fi!

This should work if you configure the AirPort Express to create a wireless network....the same type of setup that you would use for example, if the Express was connecting to the Ethernet jack in a hotel room.
However, should work does not mean to imply that it will work.
Here, I am assuming that the "main" router on the Ethernet LAN network has been configured to allow another router to connect to the network.

  • ARD 3.7.2 very slow connection on Lan

I'm running ARD 3.7.2 on MacBook Air (OSX 10.9.2) to connect mac mini (8gb / osx 10.9.2)  very slow connection on LAN.
Mini connected to LAN 100Mbit Ethernet, MacBook connection is wi-fi

Ok, I solved it after doing some extensive Google searching.  Still not sure why ARD went bonkers, but here's my fix.
    1. Download the ARD 3.7.1 client drom the Apple downloads page and install it manually on the client machine.
    2.  Go back to the administrator machine and delete the computer client from the computers list.
    3.  From the scanners list, find the now visible client machine (it will probably say "no user name or password" next to it) and drag it to the computer list.
    4.  When you drag it over it will ask for the username and password.  Fill in an administrator user name and password for that computer, click OK and you're done.
Still a mystery as to why ARD software itself will not create new client packages.  I still haven't figured that part out.  Downloading the standard client package from Apple is the only work around I know of so far.  Good luck.

  • Connecting two LANs

    Please,
I plan on connecting two LANs together via. the internet (public resource). The LANs are across town.
The computers on each LAN will be able to access other(some) computers on the other LAN (and vice-versa), they will still be able to connect to the internet. Basically, they will be able to share resources (files, application etc.)
Undergone some research regarding this, was able to find out that having a VPN connection will be a good way to go. But I have no full knowledge on what hardware I will need. How to start exactly.
If VPN is actually a good way to go, please let me know (maybe some other alternatives).
If I can get a good picture of what to do, will be very happy.
Please, can someone lead me in a good direction. Thank you.

    Hi
First of all lets focus on the end points connectivity part. What is the internet terminating onto?Say if its a leased line or a Ethernet or ADSL, then you can directly terminate it onto a cisco router. If its a ethernet connectivity, then I would recommend PIX or ASA.
Secondary we come to the tunnels,i.e, the link between both the offices which should be encrypted. This tunnel will be your pipe.Though a PIX/ASA by default support VPN tunnels and encryptions, you need to have that K9 IOS into the router.
Pls eleborate on the connectivity medium, then it will be easier to suggest you something.
Pls read the text at following link...it will give you a better picture...

  • Number of Ethernet Devices Supported on Ethernet/LAN port of Airport Express

I am using an Airport Express to extend my wireless network (Apple Time Capsule Base) and using the ethernet/LAN port to connect a wired device (a DirecTV DECA) so that my DirecTV HD DVR box can connect to the internet thru my home network. Works great. I have Whole Home DVR installed and so the other DirecTV receivers in the house are connecting to one another over the the coax and using the (DECA - Ethernet over Coax) to talk to one another and they each recieve an IP address via DHCP from the Apple Time Capsule Base - obviously thru the brdige created by the AirPort Express. Recently added an additional DirecTV reciever and for some reason this one will not get an address? Is as if the Aiport Express has "maxed out" the number of ethernet devices it will connect or bridge on the LAN side? I have tried shutting everything down and bringing DirecTV recievers on in different orders and it is alwasy the last one (the 5th one) that fails to get an address. Anyone have any knowledge if there is indeed a limit of the number of ethernet devices that are supported on the Ethernet/LAN port of the Airport Express? Thanks for any insight.

in theory, yes, but you work network admin may have locked the network preventing this from working

While they candidly told me it is possible the ClamXAV I have running in my MBP could be the cause of it that sometimes an anti-virus program may automatically set security levels so high that most connections are not permitted
That is simply not possible. ClamXav makes no changes what-so-ever to any security settings. The app itself doesn't even run until you tell it to. If you have the web site version, then you can optionally setup ClamXav Sentry to watch specific directories (folders) but all it does is scan every new or modified file in that directory. There seems to be no way it could possibly interfere with you network connectivity, Thunderbolt or otherwise.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The age of the PC is irrelevant to this Wireless connection because you are connecting direct to the Wireless Router. However I very much doubt that PC meets the minimum specs required for iTunes/iPod touch syncing.
Assuming you sync the iPod else where we still need to know more details about that router, so as Jonathan asks, what encryption do you have in place? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled? What brand and model number is the router?

  • No WLan Connectivity when Lan used with WRT54G

    I have a desktop-PC (Win XP-SP2) connected to Lan-port 1 on the WRT54G (v8.00.2)
Every time the PC is on (even at boot prompt) I cannot connect any laptop (win or Linux) via WLan. If a WLan connention is already established when is PC is started, then the connection fails immediately, the network is no more visible in the available network list.
I searched the net as well as this forum and found some aparently similar problems, but never a solution.
    Can anyone help, please?

Try connecting the different PC to the router hard-wired and check if you are getting the same problem...? If you do not get the same problem then, try to update the driver of the NIC(wired ethernet adapter) on your computer.

  • Competition problem between Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 on Photosmart C5180 connected via LAN

Hello everyone, I am writing because I need some advice / help on a problem last night while configuring a small network.
The network is made up as follows:
    2 notebook: Windows 8.1 and Windows 7
    3 different printers:
2 USB connected to the respective notebook,
1 HP Photosmart C5180 network printer connected via LAN via a router.
    The situation is the following:
both notebooks recognize the various printers and are able to send and print documents but,
when the print command starts from both notebook SIMULTANEOUSLY or at a distance of a few seconds, the only document printed is ALWAYS the one sent from the notebook with WINDOWS 8.1. The other one submitted by WINDOWS 7 IS LOST without being reported.
So if I ask of you is someone experienced in the print queues, print drivers, competition in the print jobs that can help me in solving this problem.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello cesco,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having a communication issue when attempting to print on two separate printers at the same time.
This will be a communication issue for sure.  The computer can only send to one printer at a time. You will have to print to one printer, wait for it to finnish the print job and then send it to the other printer.
There is no way that you can print from one computer to two separate printers at the same time.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Disable Internet Connection on LAN computers on Linksys E2500

    Hi,
I am new here, and going to setting up my router in my small office.
I have a Linksys E2500, and going to disable internet connection on computers that connected via LAN cable.
So, this is how I am going to set my office.
                                                                          Internet
                                                                                 |
                                                                          modem
                                                                                 |
                                                                   Linksys E2500
                                                                    (192.168.1.1)
                              |                                                                                                   |
                       Hub A                                                                                            Hub B
         PC 1                     PC 2                                                                PC 3                        PC 4
Hub A and Hub B are in different floor.
Do these Hub A and Hub B still give the same range of IP Address from linksys (192.168.1.x) to the PCs below them, like PC 1 got 192.168.1.2, PC 2 got 192.168.1.3 and go on? Can I reserve an static IP Address to each PCs, and disable internet only on PCs below Hub B (PC 3 and PC 4)? I cannot find any controls for disabling internet connection on LAN interface from the E2500 Setup Interface. There are only Wireless MAC Filtering and no LAN MAC Filtering.
If this thing sounds stupid, I am sorry but I have no experience in setting network here. I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks a lot.

I agree with FurryNutz. You will need an IP-enabled device for the router block it via Parental Controls. If you have wireless bridge or a manageable switch, you can block that and all the devices connected to it should also be blocked from internet access.
I think you can set Static DNS on the computers under Hub B to 0.0.0.0 which will not allow them to access the internet but are still within the router's local network.
