Connecting express to existing network

I have a Cisco Valet wireless router and want to add my Airport Express as a client. The ultimate goal is to broadcast Itunes from my comuter over the stero. When I go to the AirPort utility it does not see the airport express. I hot rescan but it finds nothing. The express is about 20 feet away in the other room. The Amber light keeps blinking.
Any ideas?
Thanks

i'm guessing the AX is new. an out-of-the-box unit will create a separate network when you plug it into the wall outlet
in order to set it up, you will need to temporarily join the network created by the AX. click on the airport icon in your menu bar and look for +Apple Network xxxxxxxx+. when you try to join that network, you will get a message asking +do you really want to switch networks ?+ and you do want to do that.
now you should see the AX in AU. click on the icon of the AX once to highlight it and click continue. follow onscreen instructions and, when prompted, choose to +join an existing network+ and enter the required information for your network.

  • Airport express connected to my existing network - Can I connect a device to the network through it's ethernet port?

Is it possible when my airport express is wirelessly connected to my existing network - to connect a device to the network through it's ethernet port or is it wireless only at that point?
I'm trying to connect my A/V Receiver in another room to my network without having to run a CAT5 cable all the way to the router.  I'd rather be able to connect it to my airport express if it will work that way.

Is it possible when my airport express is wirelessly connected to my existing network - to connect a device to the network through it's ethernet port or is it wireless only at that point?
    Yes.....IF
You have an AirPort Express 802.11"n" version configured to "join a wireless network" and you have enabled the option to "Enable Ethernet Clients"
    Or
You have an AirPort Express 802.11"n" configured to "extend a wireless network" from another Apple "n" router, in which case the Ethernet port is enabled by default

  • Airport Express with existing network

I just bought an Airport Express to use to send iTunes music from my Macbook Pro to my stereo.
Since i already have an existing home wireless network (for my and my wife's PCs) and internet use with my Mac, should I try to install the Airport to connect to the existing network (if that's even possible) or can (and should) it be setup as a standalone network just for wireless sending of the music to the stereo?
    - Mike

So it can be connected then. It will be in a different room than the existing wireless router - does this make a difference or cause a problem?
Can you elaborate on why you'd connect it this way (i.e.: I'd be able to use the internet while I'm streaming audio, etc.)?

  • Connect Airport Express to existing network

How do I connect an Airport Express to an existing network router?

The "Extend a wireless network" setting mentioned in other posts in this thread will not work unless you are connecting to another Apple wireless network.
Download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion . You can keep both AirPort Utility 6.x and 5.6 on your Mac and use the version that you need.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express as follows:
Power off the Express and wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the Express
Open AirPort Utility 5.6, select the Express, and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name and device password to the Express and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab and adjust as follows:
Wireless Mode = "Join a wireless network". You may need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to locate the "Join" setting.
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your main wireless network
Enter a check mark if you want to be able to connect an Ethernet device to the Express
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that your main wireless router is using
Wireless Password = Same password as the main wireless network
    Verify Password
    Click the Update button.
As soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored on the Express, close AirPort Utility and disconnect the Ethernet cable
Wait 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart. If your settings are correct, you will have a green light on the Express. You can now locate it where it will be needed, assuming that it will be able to receive a good wireless signal at that location.

  • Airport Express won't connect to my existing network!!

I purchase an Airport Express and I want to have it connect to my wireless network, but whenever it "restarts", I just get a message telling me that it can't find the Airport after restarting it. I typed in my router password(40 bit WEP), and it just doesn't work. Can anyone help me?

Unfortunately WEP has some password inconsistencies among vendor implementations. Try using the hexadecimal equivalent.
FYI 40 bit WEP is extremely weak. If your devices support it move to WPA2 or WPA. If you have some that don't support WPA or WPA2 at least use 128 bit WEP.

  • Connect TimeCapsule to existing network

My parents have an old G5 iMac with no airport built in.
They do have a Time Capsule (connected with ethernet to their computer) with which they like to connect to an existing wireless network (different modem/router).
The iMac and modem cannot be connected via ethernet; they are too far apart. I tried to let TC 'connect to existing network' but that was not an option.
    I only saw:
    - create new network
    - expand existing network.
If I choose the expand option, it finds several networks from the neighboarhood, but not their own. (The network does works wirelessly - I have no troubel connecting to it via my iPhone, anywhere in the house). Apparently the current network does not allow expanding.
Is there anything I can do just to let the TC join the existing network? And if so, will it still work well with Time Machine?
    Thank you very much!

There is an issue with the MAC address of clients being hidden.. Apple was technically correct to leave it off.. but for home usage.. which after all, these devices are for.. they are not business products.. then I don't really care if the MAC addresses of the clients are hidden behind the repeater or not. The Express with one port effectively could still have the issue.. if you plugged a switch into it.. but Apple let it pass.
In the end it is as much about business as about technically correct method of operation.. after all.. if they can get you to buy yet another product who is winning??

  • HT1126 how to join airport express to existing network with internet

How to connect wireless Airport Express to existing Wireless Network?

Hi - what kind of router do you have?

  • Join airport express to existing network

I am trying to set up a new airport express device to join an existing network (airport extreme). Airport utility does not display the device when I plug it in. How do I set it up?

The AirPort Express is broadcasting a default wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx, where the "x" could be a letter or number. If you are trying to configure the Express using wireless only, you must first log on to this network from your computer....there is no password required.....then open AirPort Utility.
If you have a spare Ethernet cable handy, connect the Express directly to your computer, restart the Express and then open AirPort Utility to configure the Express that way. Once you have the Express configured and updated, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

  • Using airport express with existing network

So I have a Zoom wireless modem/router that supports g + b wireless. If I get an airport express, will it connect to the existing wireless network? And if I want to stream music to my stereo, will the airport express communicate with my MacBook at the n network speed, or does it step down to the speed of the Zoom box?
Not sure if the airport express would talk directly with the mac or use the Zoom as an intermediary.

    Welcome to the discussions!
You have a couple of options.
    1) Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to "join" your existing wireless network. This will allow you to stream AirTunes to the AX over your current wireless network. If you choose this option, the AX will connect at "b/g" speeds.
    2) Configure the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network" so you can stream AirTunes at "n" speeds from your Mac if it is "n" capable. The downside to this approach is that you will need to switch wireless networks whenever you want to stream AirTunes, and since the AX will not be connected to a modem, you will not have internet access when you are streaming AirTunes.
Users usually choose the "join" option to allow simultaneous internet connection and AirTunes streaming.
Connection wise, your Mac must communicate to the wireless router, which in turn communicates to the AirPort Express. Your Mac will not communicate directly to the AX unless you choose option 2.

  • Need HELP trying to add Express to existing network

I get everything all setup and then the final step shows up when it asks you to put in password of existing network. I put the password in and it takes awhile the comes back with a message of An error occured while trying to connect to the network. Also when ever I do this my airport card in my computer becomes unresponsive and requires me to turn the airport on then off to get it to work again. Please help

Sorry for the delay in response.
I have been able to access and use Final Cut Server as part of our regular workflow from within our LAN.
In terms of remote access to the network, I set up the Airport Extreme to forward all incoming requests to the computer running Final Cut Server. When I go to the IP address I am reported to be on (from whatismyip) from inside my network, everything works fine. I can access the apache server and Final Cut Server. When I utilize a computer not on the same network to access the IP address for the network my Final Cut Server is located on, the browser timeouts trying to connect. Eventually I receive a message saying the server is not responding.
Any ideas why I cannot access my home network remotely?

  • Trouble with Time Capsule & Mountain Lion - unexpected error occurr when setting up connection to an existing network

    Hi,
My TC was working perfectly fine until 2 weeks ago...
I have 2 MacBook Pro 2009 & 2012, I used the TC has wireles external hard disk for Time Machine.
I installed Mountain Lion on my oldest MacBook Pro (the newest has already Mountain Lion installed) 2 weeks ago. The installation was not straight forward... I tried to perform a clean installation, but I had difficulties with some applications.. anyway after a few days, everything went fine and smooth, I had to reconnect my TC with but it works fine, I could perform a few back-up with Time Machine.
But ... since 5 days ago, my TC is not find any more when I enter Time Machine... I went to Utility Airport and the TC was not connected, just circeld with dashed line and I cannot enter the set up mode.. I tried several things that did not worked and finally performed a reinitialisation of my TC with restauration of factory setting. This helped a bit because I could finally see my TC in utility arport in the wifi connected devices. I tried to et up my TC and connect it to an existing network. It went fine when specifying on whch network I want to connect, chossing a name for the TC and its password.
But then...  I got an error message: An unexpected error has occured. Retry. I never get the window asking for the password for the network.
I retried but, It did not help, now the airport is no more visible in the wifi connected devices in airport utility...
    Any thoughts, ideas?
    Thanks,
    Yvan

If you have a clean install of Mountain Lion it will remove the 5.6 utility.. but this is still better for setups than the new one. .. certainly for Gen4 TC or earlier.
The setup of the TC manually from v5 utility.
Make sure you use all short names.. for the TC itself and for wireless.. I recommend different name for 5ghz as well.
Use WPA2 Personal security and fix wireless channels.. check 11, 6, 1 in that order.
For 5ghz try around 40 and around 150.. doesn't matter which one.
    Use ethernet if wireless fails..
You will hate me but older Mac with ML upgrade that went badly.. sorry get some help to clean install. the wireless in the Mac itself is then the issue.

  • Airport Express base / Windows XP - connecting to an existing network

    hi ,
im sure this has been asked a hundred times, but ive spent all day tinkering with my new airpoint express, trying to add it to my existing wifi netgear network.
The Airport Utility can see the apple device, but no matter how i try to connect to it the error message comes up "error occurred, make sure your network is set up " error -4
Now ii just cant understand how it can see the express but then wont let me connect. it connects it seems then takes 30 sec to dectect then fails. arrgh.
The yellow light is flashing on the express, i have reset it , reset my laptop, connected the AE unit to my router with ethernet , and tried again.
Just cannot get it right, ive looked at the network settings but i am not too confident to see where its wrong, MADNESS when it only seems like it should take 5 minutes according to apple! help!?

i should add, i can connect via XP networking to the apple device and suft the web, i just cant set it up for itunes.

  • Attempting to extend wifi w/ Airport Express breaks existing network

I am attempting to wirelessly extend/repeat a Wi-Fi network that is running from a 4th generation time capsule using a 1st Generation N Airport Express (model A1264).
Whenever i configure the airport express to extend the network, it breaks the network. all existing connections get dropped, the SSID is seen but you cannot connect to it.
If i unplug the airport express then everything works fine again.
both units are running the most recent firmware, i have done a factory reset on both units and set them up from scratch again.
i have confirmed i'm using the correct encryption (WPA2) and the proper key/password.
Any ideas? this doesn't make much sense aside from either the time capsule or airport express are defective.
    thank you.

    Windows.
somehow it magically fixed itself after leaving the airport express unplugged from power for 20 minutes.
after letting it sit unplugged for awhile it worked normally without needing to change any settings.
    thanks for your response.

  • Connected to my existing network, now how to get the IP to print?

So I went to the Apple Store today and bought an AirPort Express to use solely for wireless printing.
    Here is what I did:
    * I added the AirPort Express's MAC address and AirPort address to my AirLink 101 router's MAC filtering list.
    * I first tried the Setup Wizard to "add to an existing wireless network." I got the amber flashing light which was a bummer.
    * Reset the AirPort Express to factory settings.
    * Then I instead used the instructions to do it using the AirPort Admin Utility.
    * After using the Admin Utility for the setup, my AirPort Express shows the green light indicating that it has joined the network and now has an IP address. (Yay!)
Now the AirPort Admin Utility will no longer detect the AirPort Express even though the AirPort Express is 4 feet away, with a solid green light -- so I can't confirm what the IP Address is of the AirPort Express to be able to setup the printer (the default 10.0.1.1 doesn't work). I've tried re-scanning as well.
Also, it doesn't seem my router gives a listing of all the IP addresses of the components connected to it.
    Help??

    Nevermind! I figured it out.
I installed Bonjour for Windows and it found it straight away! Fantastic!

  • Airport Express in existing network: need active Etrhernet port

I use my Airport Express to connect via WiFI to a Linksys WRT54G, wich connects to the Internet and qt teh sqme time connects to my PC via Ethernet. iTunes works perfectly, no issue with that.
Now I want to use the Ethernet port on my Airport Express but can't find a setting where this is possible.
My Airport Express (firmware version 6.2) is configured to join an existing wireless network and connect to the Internet via wifi using DHCP. The LAN port simply is not activated and greyed out in the Airport Admin Utility.
Can anyone help me out here? Is what I want possible with the Airport Express?
    Thanks in advance,

You can use the Express in that way, but you'll have to set up the network differently and you may have to use third-party firmware in the WRT54G to get it to work. You need to set up the Express to join the existing wireless network and extend its range (i.e. set up a WDS with the Express and the WRT54G) in order for the Ethernet port to be active. Whether you have to use third-party WRT54G firmware depends on the version of the router. I believe that any version prior to v5 require the firmware. See this site:
