Connecting external harddrive to airport base extreme

I'm trying to connect my non-mac external harddrive to my airport base extreme. However, within airport utility I have no option of connecting disks. I have contacted apple and they say this may be my best option for finding a way around that...any ideas?

Do you have a square 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or a round AEBS?

How is the drive formatted? Drives must be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) or FAT. If it is formatted NTFS it won't work.

  • Airport Base Extreme & HD media streaming poorly

    Hi All
Just wondering if anyone else is having an issue with streaming media from the Airport Base Extreme?
    So my setup is
1Tb Buffalo Drive into logitech USB2.0 Hub into ABE
2 x PC's on wired network through ABE
1 x MacBook Pro on wireless
I use the MacBook Pro as a media server through the tv/stereo and had the gold idea of using the ABE as a file server for music/movies
In reality things are not as simple. I cannot stream movies without very noticeable jumping of the movie and music jumps as well - this is to the mac. To the PC's the streaming is fine with no problems. If i stream movies / music from the ABE to the PC's its fine.
so media streaming as follows (Server) -> (Client ) - Result
    PC -> Mac - OK
    Mac -> PC - OK
    ABE -> PC - OK
ABE -> Mac - All media choppy
Anybody else had this problem and if so has anyone managed to solve it?
    Cheers in advance
    Ben

On your Macbook, bring up the Activity Monitor application and
select the network tab. It will show you a graph network data transfer
rates. Perform the Macbook tests you mentioned and note the rates
and character (smooth and continuos, very spiky, lots of gaps,etc.).
Also, what software are you using for each of your tests. Just want
to make sure comparing apples to apples (no pun intended.)

  • Accessing an external harddrive through Airport Extreme

    Hello,
I have read that one should be able to access an external harddrive that is connected to a airport extreme from any computer that has the internet.
    Is this true?
How does one find the Internet address?
    Regards,
    Jon

    Anybody got any ideas?
    Cheers,

  • My iPad 2 struggles to connect to Airport Base Extreme

    Hello.
I am new to this site and relatively new to Apple products as well. I purchase an iPad 2 a while back that usually had pretty poor connection to my old router and modem. A month ago my modem died and was replaced by the cable company with a brand new one, very quick, 15-20mbps. At the same time I updated my router because I couldn't get a very good signal across the house on my iPad. I purchased a new Apple Extreme Airport Base ($200). Setup was incredibly simple through the iPad and took less than a minute. The problem I am having is that the iPad has a very poor connection to the Airport Base. My laptops and video game systems all have a perfect connection, but the iPad continually loses connection and is very slow to load. At the office we have a netgear router and it works perfectly there.
Being new to Apple I have no idea what to do about fixing this. All my non Apple products work perfect on the Apple router, but the iPad 2 does not. Can anyone help trouble shoot this or know the steps to create a better connection between the two? I included a screenshot of the router/modem on the Airport Base Utility screen from the iPad.
Below is a screen shot on the iPad to show that it is connected, but it still struggles.  Thanks for any tips!

  • Connect external harddrive

Is there a maximum size at the external harddrive when I connect it to airport extreme?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
There isn't a storage limit. However, note that the USB port of the AirPort Extreme isn't designed for external disks, so it may or may not work

  • Connect to Internet Without Airport Base Station or Other Wireless Router

I have an iMac G5 w/Airport Extreme card, an eMac w/Airport card (not Extreme), and an iBook w/Airport card (not extreme). The iMac is connected to the internet via DSL (direct Ethernet connection - no router). I can succesfully network all three computers for file sharing but can not connect to the internet over the network using the eMac or the iBook. Is it even possible to use the iMac as a wireless base station for the other two computers or do I have to buy a wireless router or Airport Base Station?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   eMac 10.3.9, iBook 10.3.9

no1bass, Welcome to the discussion area!
The best solution is to get an inexpensive wireless base station.
However, you can use the iMac to share the Internet connection. Go to the iMac's Sharing preference pane and enable Internet Sharing. If you have the iMac's firewall enabled, you will need to also enable Web Sharing or otherwise configure the firewall to open the correct ports.

  • G5 suddenly will not connect to interent via Airport base station.

All of a sudden today, my G5 stopped connecting to the internet via my Airport base station. Usually when this happens, I just go downstairs and unplug the base station, wait 30 seconds, and then restart it. This almost always worked until today. I tried reseting my DSL hub (2wire using SBC) and after a few tries this worked only briefly before my G5 once again stopped recognizing my internet connection. My eMac downstairs, which is not attached wirelessly, connects just fine. When I open the network preferences on my G5, I have a yellow light by the Airport extreme option. I trashed airport prefs and I also trashed Yamipod, which I had just installed and was using right around the time when the G5 stopped connected. I restarted, and verified and repaired disk perms to no avail. Any help?

If you had to perform this kind of restart of your
AEBS frequently, then this may be caused by one of
    these two frequent reasons:
    - you run a buggy firmware version on your AEBS
    (5.6 and 5.7 have this kind of behaviour);
    - you have a new neighbour using a wireless network
on a channel much too near from your own.
If you'd like to check if you may be in one of these
easy to solve cases, just indicate which firmware version
is on your AEBS (AirPort Admin Utility shows it), and
tell us if you have neighbours using wireless network
    (iStumbler shows this).

  • Losing connection with safari using airport base station

Airport base station. Frequently loses connection with safari, even though the station shows green. Same problem with all our devices, IMac, MacBook Pro, IPads, Iphone etc. However, disconnect not at the same time, some devices works, others don't.

  • Connecting External Drive to Airport Exress?

so what would happen if i connected my LaCie 160G ext. harddrive to my airport express via USB? I've read a lot of posts concerning Airport Extreme, but ideally, i would love to be able to connect my external drive to the airport express and have all of that information accessable through my wireless network...possible? or stupid?

Basically, it won't work. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is only for connecting an USB printer. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107857)

  • Can i connect external HD to Airport Express' USB port

and can connect a USB hub and use an external HD and a printer at the same time?

and can connect a USB hub and use an external HD and a printer at the same time?
No. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will only support a single USB printer.

  • Connecting external HD to Airport to use as Time Machine

    Hello,
Sorry if this is a "same old" type of question but I cannot find the answer in this forum.
We have 2 MacBook Pros, 1 airport Extreme that both MacBooks are connected to and use for the Internet. (In case that matters) I have an external HD that has been connected to the airport that has been used as an external storage space for both MacBooks. Not too long ago the HD crashed on my MacBook so I have decided to use the external for a Time Machine for both MacBooks. I cleared everything off the external (was told I would lose info when setting up for TM) and tried to set up TM with no luck.
The external HD shows up in Finder but not when I try to set up TM. All that shows is the Airport.
Is there a step by step link somewhere or any suggestions on how I can do this?
    * The external is not as big as I should have and I do plan on upgrading in the future. Right now the one I have is 600G and my MacBook is 500G and the other is 250G. We hardly have anything on either so can the external work for now?
    Thanks
    Jim

Thank you I saw this when I was searching. Not a very high percentage of it working correctly.
We don't really know the percentages (Apple might, but isn't telling, other than not supporting it).
The success and reliability are "iffy." In many cases, it seems to work fine for a while, but then on occasion the sparse bundle the backups are in turns up corrupted. Sometimes it's repairable, sometimes not -- so you have to erase the drive (or delete the sparse bundle) and start over.
My "primary" backups are done that way, but I also keep secondary backups (much easier, of course, with an iMac than laptops.) I keep a "bootable clone" via CarbonCopyCloner (the similar SuperDuper is also popular), on a separate external HD, and, mostly for testing, another set of TM backups on that same external.
    Is this my only option?
Oh, no. Of course, you could go back to using the HD when connected directly; or get a Time Capsule. If there's a desktop Mac in the mix, you can back up over your network to a shared drive connected to it.
And there are 3rd-party services that let you back up to the "cloud," such as Mozy or Carbonite; and some other backup apps will work with an Air Disk. I think Retrospect is one.
Best might be a variant of what I do; back up via the Airport, but be sure to do other backups to a locally-connected drive periodically. That gives you the best of both types of backup, as well as two separate, independent ones: all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect. Just be sure to run the "clone" update frequently.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Do I need an internet connection to use the airport base station express?, Do I need an internet connection to use the airport base station express?, Do I need an internet connection to use the airport base station express?

we have no wireless internet in my house and the only internet connection is a laptop aircard that does not give off signal. will the base station express work without an internet connection being fed to it?

On the windows computer that is connected to the internet you will need to enable Internet Connection Sharing, see link below.  On the Airport you will need to turn Connection Sharing OFF as the Airport will not be handling NAT (network address translation) or be a DHCP Server as this will be handled by the computer with ICS.

  • Mac book pro won't connect to external harddrive

After upgrade de firmware of the AEBS from 7,0 to 7,1 I can not see the to EABS connected external harddrive on my macbook pro anymore. However on my windows pc I can see the drive clearly now with all the files in any directory, while before the upgrade I couldn't see a lot of files on the external harddrive bij Mac or PC. Is there anybody who can help me out with this?

I had the exact same problem, here is what helped me, hopefully it will help you also...
I have been using my airport disk (edge_diskgo external HD) now for about 3 weeks, it has been rock solid... until tonight after the firmware update.
My macs could not locate the airport disk, but my pc's still could.
(Maybe this was how the security problem was solved? You can no longer access the Airport disk from macs? Brilliant!)
It turns out that all I had to do on my both my macs is go to
Airport disk utility (just type that in spotlight) and check
both boxes: Automatically discover Airport Disks
Show Airport disks in menu bar
Then I went to the top right hand side of the menu bar, and clicked on the airport disk utility icon, clicked on my basestation name and entered my basestation password.
I also had following settings in Airport Utility/Disks/File sharing:
    File sharing is enabled
secure shared disks (with base station password)
    Guest access (not allowed)
Share disks over ethernet wan port (checked)..
Advertise disks globally using bonjour (not checked)
My drives are back up with all of their contents, working now, we will see how they do tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help on this post, special Thanks to trevinwagner, hope this helps someone else.... its very late, Goodnight all

  • Macbook OSX 10.6.8 pro wont connect to airport base station anymore

all other machines have  no problems.  It worked earlier in the day-put to sleep-came back- now it can't something is wrong with network settings but nothing changed.  Two PC's are connected to same cable/Airport base station wirelessly with no issues it's just my machine.  I've rebooted a few times-that didn't help.  i can get my macbook's airport to work with my wireless aircard so it's not my the internal wireless modem, it's got to be my wireless settings for the airport basestation itself-but nothing chagned in those few hours it was asleep?  I have been having issues for a few weeks requiring that I run diagnosis on this home wireless network connection, but it usually gets resolved and coems back on-now it seems gone.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I am not sure if it helps but it looks, when I renew the DHP, nothing is in the router section.
(not that technically savvy-but usually can wing it if the directions are too bad).
    This is running OSX 10.6.8
    Thanks,
    Megan

Your System Preferences > Network > TCP/IP  should be set as follows
    IPv4 - DHCP
IPv6 - off (for now, you might have to enable it in the future, but it can be off for now)
There is nothing in the DHCP Client ID box as it's not required.
If your clicking the "renew lease" likely means your date and time on the computer is wrong.
Go to System Preferences > Date and Time and set a time zone and in the first screen, set the date and time automatically. then reboot the computer.
If your having  problems with your computer remembering the date and time,
    perform a PRAM reset
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
If your still having problems with your machine holding the date and time, not keep ing your System Preferences changes after a reboot, then open your
Users/Library/Preferences folder and look for a file called
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and move it to the Desktop, reboot the computer and try to set the date and time again, reboot to see if it works remmebering your system preferneces changes, if it does, then delete the desktop file.
If your still having trouble after that, create a new user account and log into it, see if the problem still continues.

  • Can't connect to Internet using airport

I am trying to connect to internet wirelessly, using my Airport Extreme (802.11n), but it won't work. When I use the ethernet cable directly to my MacBook Pro (as I am now) internet comes fine. I have done many tests, change configuration, but nothing works. I really don't know what the problem is and what to do.
    Thks for helping,
    Marco

Just as an update, I have been able to reestablish connection by resetting the airport base.
