  • Using Firewire to connect external hardrive

I recently had my hard drive crash, so i bought a Western Digital My Book 500GB portable hardrive with firewire 400. I can connect the drive fine with USB 2.0, but not with the firewire. Everytime I turn on the drive it powers down. I've been looking for driver updates both from western digital and mac, but still no luck. Any thoughts?

Are you using the drive's external power supply? You may not have sufficient power from the FireWire port to power the drive from the bus, especially if it's a full size drive.
There are no drivers needed. If you continue having a problem you should contact the vendor or WD directly for tech support.
Note that some WD drive systems do not work reliably or at all with Macs. Discuss this with WD.

I have an external hardrive for MAC, I needed to save something from my work computer so I can pass it on to my MAC, it requiered me to re-format my external HD and now when I connected to my MAC I only have "read only rights". How do I fix it? I run my Itnues from this external and now my library is gone. Luckily I have it saved somewhere else, which is not a problem, but I won't be able to write to this HD for right now. I can't see an option to give those permission back.

Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

  • I need advice:  I love my apple TV.  But my laptop at home, only has a 750gig hard drive.  Is there a possibility of having all my media on an external hardrive to still connect to the Apple TV?

Is there like in a hard drive of which iTunes can read the media, which will not require me to add and delete media onto iTunes, because of a lack of space on my laptop?

just get an ext HD, and point your itunes library to that drive so now you'll just keep all your media on this ext

  • Why would i connect a external hardrive to the airport extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN gigabit ethernet?

Hey just wanted to know what is the reason i would connect my external hardrive to the extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN ehternet. I know one is local and other is wide but can someone explain in simpler terms.

Connecting a hard drive to the Airport Extreme makes it available to be shared across all the computers on your network.
WAN (Wide Area Network) is your connection to the internet
LAN (Local Area Network) is your internal (or local) ethernet connections (computers, printers, etc...)

  • I can't connect my external hardrive to my MacBook Pro...

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro - when I connect my Porsche external harddrive to it, it lights up but it doesn't show up on my Pro.
If I connect this hardrive to another Mac it's fine. It used to work perfectly, which makes me think it's not a power issue. I have tried changing leads and changing ports to see if this rectifies the issue.

From the Finder: Finder>Preferences>General. Check the box -External disks.

  • I'm having issues syncing my ipod to my external hardrive's library. How do I sync and get the music from my external hard drive?

I recently moved the music from my old computer in itunes to my external hardrive (changed the media file location and consolidated library). I connected my external hardrive to my new computer (windows 7) and changed my itunes media file to my external hardrive and consolidated my new computer's library to my external hardrive. When I connect my iPod, it is only grabbing the music from my new computer and not my external hardrive. How do I get the music from my external hardrive onto my iPod?

Did you move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder?
File > Add folder to library and select the folder with music on the external.

  • Hey everyone! i have a external hardrive i keep my itunes library of songs on and it wont sync with my ipod touch inless i copy and paste it into my ipod device when thats conected. i dont want all the songs on there only checked ones. help plz!!

im having trouble with syncing my ipod touch with my itunes library that i keep on a external hardrive. when i plug up my external hardrive that has all my songs on it, it doesn't sync to my ipod correctly. i have to copy and paste the songs to my ipod device when its connected. i dont want all the songs on there and i want to be able to manually control whats on my ipod. and id like to take some songs off of the ipod also but i want them still in my itunes library though. i usually check the songs i want on the ipod but it isnt working that way maybe because its a external hardrive?? i never had a problem with past ipods with my library on itunes but i ran out of space on my computer and had to transfer all of the songs to my external hardrive. please someone help me!! i thought it would be simple! but it isnt the case! i plug up my hardrive then my ipod, i press sync and nothing gets transfered unless i copy and paste them to the ipod. even though it says ipod syncing in progress! this is really confusing! please help me!! sorry if this is jumbled up and confusing..

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • External Hardrive not "readable" by my computer anymore....

So the other day my Samsun 200gig external hardrive was working..and the next thing you know it...the drive becomes "not readable by your computer" AGH...how frustrating. The Utility Disc also says that there are errors when trying to repair the disc.
These were the errors: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Repair error: could not read boot block.
I have so much crap on my external drive..and I bought it new in Japan 5 months ago! AHHH..help! Thanks!!
Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
I had a similar problem and it responded to several different approaches.
    1. Make sure all is up to date in software update
    2. Connect to different port
    3. Vary the connection setup, start up with ext HD attached and turned on.
    4. Do the opposite of 3
    5. You might zap the pram( info in your booklet)
I hope perhaps that some of these might work, good luck

  • 1 library, 1 external hardrive, 2 macs using it.

Hello out there, Ive got my entire itunes library on my external 500gb hardrive. I would like to use both my imac g5 power pc and my macbook pro to use and share this one external hardrive so that I don't have to duplicate anything. my g5 is running itunes 7 and my macbook pro is running itunes 8. I don't wanna upgrade to either if I don't have to.

I would prefer to use it one at a time on which ever computer I am running. I constantly connect and reconnect it to either computer. Still, to answer my question, A) Do I still have to run the same Itunes version? and B) How do I get the song list to read on the second mac. Simply going to preferences/advanced and setting the itunes music folder location isn't working.

  • HT1178 Time Capsule used as External Hardrive Backup

If I want to use a Time Capsule as an external hardrive backup for my MacBook Pro, how do I do it?
What cords do I need and can I get it to back up wirelessly?  I don't want my own wireless from it,
because we already have it in the house - I just want my own storage unit and I have one, but no
cords to go with it.  Need to get cords - which ones?

This is out of my area of expertise, but I believe you can set the Time Capsule up so it doesn't generate a network, but is on the existing network.
Then you can back up to it wirelessly.
You should still do the first backup via an Ethernet cable if at all possible, as it will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI, but then backups can be done without having to connect the cable.

  • TIMECAPSULE IS AN EXTERNAL HARDRIVE

Oh God ,ur gona hate me, my Timecapsule is an external hardrive !
No, it isn't. It's a combination of wireless router and network hard drive.
Why would i need to spend more money on another external hardrive,my TC was the most expensive & iwas told it was the best for my macbook?
External hard drives are much less expensive (since they don't include wireless routers).
And they can be backed-up by Time Machine, to your Time Capsule.
I phoned the Apple shop & they told me my TC is an external hardrive, that also backsup automatically & wirelessly & a wireless router & they showed me how i can move files/folders to my TC to freeup space on my macbook startup disk

No, I don't hate you, but I am beginning to wonder.
You have asked this question about a dozen times in 6 or 8 threads over the past few days. I don't know why you think you're going to get a different answer.
I should know better, but I'll try it one more time:
You can use a Time Capsule for:
Extra storage, to free-up space on your internal hard drive
    OR:
Backups of your data (on your internal HD plus any external HD(s) connected to it).

  • Using external hardrive to backup

My external hardrive is set up to automatically backup when I plug it in. I have used it twice, both times
when its arrow at the top of my desktop quit spinning I dropped its icon into the trash and then removed the external drive from my laptop. This time it must have finished quite rapidly. I went in to Time Machine to see if I could tell for sure. I pressed a blue 'up' arrow and its icon on my desktop disappeared. I can not find the icon anywhere and do not want to take any chances of unplugging it from my laptop incorrectly. In Time Machine it says that the latest backup failed and Next Backup will take place 'when Disk is connected'. It also says that the latest backup was delayed.
CAN I REMOVE this external drive without dropping it into the trash. Where did its icon go? I just can't afford to take any chances.

I agree that you should be able to just pull out the hard drive if you don't hear any activity from it writing or see a light on the casing blinking. Make sure the hard drive is formated Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work properly with Time Machine.

  • FCP shuts down when I open my project from external hardrive??

    Hi,
Problem here. I am working on a large (yes, and important) project at work and it kept getting larger so I moved all my files for FCP and all my media to an external hardrive the IT guys gave me. I did this two days ago. Yesterday I got A LOT of work done on this project. Now, when I try to open up the project FCP shuts down 44% through "Reading Project" when I open my file.

  • External hardrive/time machine

    Hello,
I am a little new to the imac world.
I am a photographer and have lots and lots of files that need to be backed up without me having to worry if I am going to loose them or not.
I am confused right now by having to do this manually.
Can you guys recomend a good/big external hardrive that will work with both pc's and macs? and that will hold up thousands and thousands of raw files?
Also I am trying to figure out how to set up time machin and I am not sure how, can anyone give me some advice on this? will it save EVERYTHING stored on my mac? I want to make sure all files on Finder, Aperture, iphoto, imovie etc are all backed up into time machine.
Thank you for any help you can give me!
    Delfina

First, if you wish to share the external drive across platforms, it cannot be formatted for Mac (HFS+) or Windows (NTFS).
Common formats are FAT32 and exFAT (aka FAT64).
FAT32 will work with Mac and Windows systems back into the mists of time. However, the format has a limit of around 4GB per file, which may be a problem.
exFAT works with later versions of Snow Leopard and subsequent, and with current Windows systems (I believe it can be added to XP too). There is no file size limit (for all practical purposes).
In your case I would suggest a minimum 2TB drive formatted exFAT if both your systems support it. (NOTE; format the drive on the Windows machine and check it works satisfactorily on both before commiting important files to it).
Getting the files there will require third-party software if you wish to do scheduled incremental backups, but there could be problems there if the contents are modified on Windows and the drive subsequently backed up from the Mac.
I would endorse the idea of using a multiple drive station either directly connected or NAT, with a mirrored pair of drives. I wouldn't use a striped array.
Time machine cannot be used in this way - it needs to be formatted for Mac only. It will back up selected categories, including the entire drive if you so specify, but it's not intended for use as a storage drive - restoring files from TM should be done within the TM environment.
Read Pondini's FAQ on TM; http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Note that you'll need a HD at least twice the size of the internal for best results with TM.
