ConnectinG external HD FW800 TO FW400

i am just starting with Final Cut Express 4 and i have an external hard drive connection question. as the FireWire400 port is in use on the back of my iMac, can i connect to a FW400 on my external G-Drive from the FW800 port on the iMac?
on an amusing note, i just got the "Final Cut Express 4 Visual Quickstart Guide", all 600 pages of it. i am thankful i didn't order a full guide...it may have resulted in the deforestation of the Earth. very helpful book, though.
thanks

hold onto your socks!
here comes a question that may take you all back a while...
i have worked with iMovie (the various incarnations, up until the latest the '08 version), so the most crucial element in my FCE learning will be relearning many of the procedures i have learned in iMovie. how do i get a collection of sequences (in the literal sense, not the "sequences" referred to in the FCE4 tome) from the HV20 into FCE? i was used to importing directly into iMovie, but, and i am only at the beginning of both the book and the time spent in FCE, i gather the browser in FCE serves to locate files already imported into the iMac. i would go the long way, use iMovie to import, relocate each clip into a new folder and have FCE mine this folder for video content. is there an easier way?
learning will go much more quickly once i sort this whole importing business out. it is akin to trying to learn how to drive without knowing where the ignition is. i can't even crash...
i think i am moving out of this topic, and i may start posting (and searching...) in a more relevant area.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Thunderbolt to FW800 to FW400...

    Here's the deal...
I have brand new Mac, with Thunderbolt and Presonus Firestudio 2626 audio interface with FW400 connections.
Now... I got Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter, FW800 to FW400 cable, and here this gets interesting... My Mac won't find this interface at all, no matter what.
Is there anybody with similar situation? I read somewhere, that FW800 to FW400 cable has to be "bilingual". So I bought one, at least they say it's bilingual.
    No luck...
Somewhere back in my mind something tells me... "Back to PC", since that audio interface works perfectly with my PC.
    Help me, please!

    Hi all,
I just restarted the iMac with everything plugged in and it works fine. (headslap) Duh.
    Thanks anyway!

  • Are FW800 and FW400 Ports On Separate Buses...On Santa Rosa MBP?

    Hi Folks,
I have yet to get a definitive answer from Apple Support, Apple store techs, the Web, searching these forums, etc. on this question:
On the latest MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa), are the Firewire 800 and Firewire 400 ports on separate buses? In other words, if I have an external FW400 drive (or other FW400 device such as an audio interface) running on the FW400 port, and an external FW800 drive running on the FW800 port, will the 800 run at 800 speeds or 400 speeds?
Here are the answers I've received thus far:
Apple Support: "Yes...they 'should' be on separate buses", "The techs say the 800 'should' run at 800", "You should call an Apple store"
Apple Store #1: "They ARE on separate buses"
Apple Store #2: "They ARE NOT on separate buses"
The Web: I've not found one source that supports that they ARE on separate buses. Every post I've read in this and other forums suggest that they share the same bus and that the FW800 port will degrade in this situation.
Does anyone have the definitive answer on this? Any real-world experience?
    Thank you so much.
    Rich

    Ignore the previous poster.
Here is all you need to know...
There is ONE FireWire bus. It supports up to 800 MB/sec.
*You cannot use both the FW800 and FW400 ports at the same time! You can't!*
If you for example plug in a FireWire 800 hard drive into your FireWire 800 port, and a video camera into the FireWire 400 port, then capturing video in Final Cut Pro simply *WILL NOT WORK.*
    So, what is the solution?
One solution is to plug the video camera into the hard drive, assuming it has a FW 400 port on it. This will daisy-chain the video camera through the FW 800 hard drive.
Another solution is to buy a FireWire ExpressCard for your 34mm ExpressCard slot. I got one with two FireWire 400 ports at NewEgg.com for $29.99. There are also ones available that have FireWire 800 ports on them, but they are pricier. Adding the ExpressCard gives you *an additional FireWire bus* that will have its own 800MB/s dedicated just to it. This is the best way to go since now you will have DUAL buses.
For example I hook my FireWire 800 hard drive up on my FW 800 port, and my MOTU 828 up on the ExpressCard FireWire 400 port. That way, the audio signals coming in are not clogging up the bus that the record drive is set up on... I've been able to get better latency for recording this way!
    Hope this helps!!

  • Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB?

Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB? (two wd cav. green 2tb from different purchase went down in one day, both from the backside usb ports)
First one of my video storage hdd, full of files suddenly got extremely slow, and a few minutes later, it unmounted itself, but with the unmount error, but nobody even touched the cables, electricity etc. When I tried to mount it again, it did not respond, just give a periodical load light and ticking. First I thought it must be hardware failure, but since I bought a brand new drive today and it made the same problem as soon as I tried to format it. I got suspicious. The consol, said about these - i googled all but now solution so far. (WesternFresh is my drive)
Oct 23 17:10:58 xxxx fseventsd[47]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd/636573acca1d6550 (No such file or directory). mount point /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd

    Oct 24 17:23:05 tmdc diskarbitrationd[16]: unable to probe /dev/disk1 (status code 0xFFFFFFFA).
and there was an I/O faliure not but it was on another mac - where i hoped itt will come back to live.
I think - if it is possible - that the OS maybe misunderstand something about these drives, and try to change - maybe permissions - all the time if a usb external connects...? (I am not really into it as you see )
Also about Disk Utility - it does not see any partition on the old hdd, but i shows the name of the product. If I connect the new hdd via the keyboard usb, the disk utility is able to see and format it, but the hdd will be still slow and tikking after it.
Also I tried Disk Warrior (freezd out) and Techtool Pro 6 thanks to some ol'frineds - which also not saw the old hdd, but did nothing useful with the new one.
About cav green: I have 3 of them and no error so far, and got 4 1tb cav green in 2 mybook studio II also without any problem.
Iam a bit scared, and try not to plug in any usb hdd-s now, but I have to continue work, so I need solutions.
I hope if it is not hardware failure, maybe some tricky terminal code will bring back the viability of my old hdd - and I won't have to spend a lot of money to recover data.
    strange.
    if anybody has a clue?
    update 1:
    i found this post also:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15905481#15905481
I also made the mentioned steps - but it is a bit different sice it reproduce itself and I cant use DU.

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.
    thanks guys, thread is closed

  • How to connect external sensors to labview?

i want to ask How can i connect external sensors to NI labview for my final year project.? here are my lists of sensors:

I've used the NI's bread board (with DAQ assistant initially) when I was in school. We used it for temp, light, and etc... measurements, the whole system is very straight forward. I would say having the option to simulate signals is a big plus in that. From what you described, I don't think the "slower" rate of data acquisition will disturb you at all. But more information is needed on your sensors and  general functional spec.
    @ NIquist & RTSLVU, please correct me if I'm misleading/wrong :-)
Is that the ELVIS stuff?  Very neat but kind of pricey (unless the school is paying! )
Again, the low-cost USB DAQs from NI or MC are the way to go for the OPs project.  I am assuming that he has enough electronics background to make simple signal conditioning circuits for his sensor chips.

  • How to connect external trigger PCI-1433

    Hi all:
I met the same problem as this old post: https://forums.ni.com/t5/Machine-Vision/How-to-connect-external-trigger-PCIe-1433/m-p/1677560/highli...
however the post did not give solution.
I am having an issue getting the external trigger( from PCI 6259) to work with a cameralink camera, a PCIe-1433 card . The PCI 6259 is connected to BNC 2111, the output trigger signal from CTR0 is connected to the SMB connector on the 1433 card and is providing pulse train at TTL voltages (0-5V).  Using the MAX SOFTWARE and under the Acquisition tab I have CC1 set to external 0, however the camera is not receiving this external trigger. The camera is Basler 4096-140km.
I measured the ouiput signal from CTL0, the sigal seems good.
I tried RTSI trigger before, failded. I thought SMB should be more straight forward, seems I was wrong.
    Looking forward to reply!

    Bobjojo,
You will actually need to affect the properties of both the camera and the frame grabber to take advantage of this triggering mode. I found a document that contains a good run down of the process to acquire in this mode (linked below). As far as the programming for the acquisition is concerned, the frames will be built at the driver level for the specified frame height. This means that the IMAQ driver will composite the line scans for you, and any simple acquisition (the document shows using the Vision Acquisition Express VI) will be able to pull the image into LabVIEW.

  • How to connect external speakers to Satellite A100-451

    Hello,
I have a Satellite A100-451 (UK) running Vista. I want to connect external speakers. There is a 'headphones' jack on the front (3.5mm jack I think), can I connect external speakers here? The speakers are 'PC Line' with their own power supply and also have a 3.5mm jack plug).
    Thanks

You need the audio Line-out put and the headphone jack provides this output.
In other words you can use this jack to connect the external speakers

  • How to connect external display to iMac

which port do I use to connect external display to my iMac ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Depending on the iMac you have, you have different ports: Mini-DVI, Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt. Mini DisplayPort is available in 2009 and newer iMacs, and Thunderbolt is available in the Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMac.
You have to use one of those ports to connect an external display. You will probably have to look for an adapter, depending on the port the external screen has got

  • IPod Photo stuck in "connect external power" mode

I recently purchased a used 60gb iPod Photo from a Goodwill. I restored it, but it required me to update. Restored, updated, but being an older iPod, the screen showed the "connect external power" icon. I found an external power source and it has been connected for nearly 2 hours, and it still isn't responding. I think it's stuck but I'm not sure. I've tried resetting it and using multiple different outlets, but nothing seems to be working. It still shows the external power logo.

The iPod photo is a 4th gen iPod, and that particular model requires you to connect it to an Apple USB power adapter to complete the Restore process (it's not related to doing an update).  These iPod's came with a USB power adapter, so the expectation is that the iPod's owner has one.  I heard this is because the iPod needs a higher voltage that is not available from a computer's USB port to complete the Restore, which is probably why it does not work with the "external power source" you tried.
You need to get an Apple USB power adapter.  Or, if there is an Apple Store nearby, you can probably take it there (to the store's Genius Bar) and ask if you can plug it into one of their power adapters, to complete that last step.  Do not have them do the full Restore process on a Mac, if you use Windows.

  • Sound - My built speakers do not show in the output section in sound system preferences area only digital out hence unless I connect external speakers I have no sound - can anyone assist?

on my IMac the internal speakers have ceased working - in the sound preferences area only digital out sound is there no internal speakers to choose so unless I connect external speakers I have no sound

    Hey Jack (woofman jack)
Sounds like the micro switch inside the output jack that switches the audio from internal to external is stuck on external. Try plugging a set of buds, headphones or digital Toslink adapter in and out a few times to see if it will unstick the micro switch. You also might try jiggling a tooth pick around inside the audio output jack to see if that unsticks it? If not then you'll need to make an appointment at your Local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and have the jack serviced.
