Connecting external laptop to iMac

Is it possible to connect my work laptop to my imac - solely to use the imac as the monitor for the laptop?

No, not as a regular display. The iMac is not designed to be a monitor and has no built-in video input.
You may be able to use screen sharing to show the laptop's screen in a window on the iMac's display. If you make the window +full screen+, it would look like the iMac's display is the laptop's screen. However, the signal would be going over a network connection, not a video connection, so the refresh speed would be relatively slow.
If you want to do this, you need to run a VNC server on the laptop. Connect the two with some type of network (by Ethernet cable would probably be fastest). Run a VNC client on the iMac. VNC is open source, so the apps are usually free. For the Mac OS X VNC client app, this is a good one

If the two computers are both recent Macs, Mac OS X has a built-in screen sharing feature that works really well. I use it to +remote control+ a Power Mac G5 with no display from my iMac.

How connect External monitor to iMac?

How to do that depends on the iMac variant you have. iMacs have been in continuous production since 1998 in four broad families that are not 100 percent alike in behavior.
Please look at the iMac images and descriptions in the links on this site:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
and tell us what variant you believe you have.
iMacs from the first through third-generations (G3, G4, and G5 processors) that support an external monitor were not set up to do anything other than "mirroring"--you see on the external exactly what is on the built-in display.
Your description sounds like you have a newer iMac than this forum covers because, starting with the Intel iMacs in 2006, external monitors were allowed to do both mirroring and "extended desktop." The latter is what I believe you are seeing.
Try this first: press the F7 key. On many Macs capable fo using external monitors, this was a shortcut to toggle between mirrored and extended display. If your keyboard has an "fn" modifier key, you may need to press that to get the F7 key to work.
If you have an intel-powered iMac I can ask the Hosts to move you to that forum, which is much more active than this one which is for pre-2006 iMacs.

  • How to connect external display to iMac

which port do I use to connect external display to my iMac ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Depending on the iMac you have, you have different ports: Mini-DVI, Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt. Mini DisplayPort is available in 2009 and newer iMacs, and Thunderbolt is available in the Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMac.
You have to use one of those ports to connect an external display. You will probably have to look for an adapter, depending on the port the external screen has got

    Please help!
    Much thanks !

In case others want help on this. I found the following details also handy:
    See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
    1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
    2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
    3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
    4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
    5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
    6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
    Hope that helps you!

  • Need to Connect my Laptop and iMac. Can someone help an idiot?

    Hi
I have an iMac and MacBook, both running Leopard and a Time Capsule router. As .mac doesn't sync documents and other such programs, such as checkbook I am searching for a way to link and sync them.
Both are connected to the Time Capsule and I can access the internet from either.
My question is what must I do to make them see each other and what software do you recommend to keep them sync'd? Is there any problem with permissions?

I think ChronoSync will do the job for you. There is a trial Version available to just give it a testrun.

  • Sharing connected external hdd from imac to macbook?

    problem explained here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1749755&tstart=0
    thanks

First make sure that both computers have the 'file sharing' box checked in the system preferences>sharing panel. Assuming you are running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), open Finder and the computer should show in the sidebar under sharing. Select that computer and in the top right of the window choose 'connect as' and it will ask for a user name and password (for the other computer - not the one you are using). If you've already done these steps before, you may need to select disconnect first so you can log in again. To gain access to all the volumes mounted on that computer (internal or external) enter an admin user name and password. If unsure who admin users are, check the other computers system preferences>accounts panel.
NOTE: Both computers also need to be connected to the same network for this method (whether wired or wireless).

  • Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB?

Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB? (two wd cav. green 2tb from different purchase went down in one day, both from the backside usb ports)
First one of my video storage hdd, full of files suddenly got extremely slow, and a few minutes later, it unmounted itself, but with the unmount error, but nobody even touched the cables, electricity etc. When I tried to mount it again, it did not respond, just give a periodical load light and ticking. First I thought it must be hardware failure, but since I bought a brand new drive today and it made the same problem as soon as I tried to format it. I got suspicious. The consol, said about these - i googled all but now solution so far. (WesternFresh is my drive)
Oct 23 17:10:58 xxxx fseventsd[47]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd/636573acca1d6550 (No such file or directory). mount point /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd

    Oct 24 17:23:05 tmdc diskarbitrationd[16]: unable to probe /dev/disk1 (status code 0xFFFFFFFA).
and there was an I/O faliure not but it was on another mac - where i hoped itt will come back to live.
I think - if it is possible - that the OS maybe misunderstand something about these drives, and try to change - maybe permissions - all the time if a usb external connects...? (I am not really into it as you see )
Also about Disk Utility - it does not see any partition on the old hdd, but i shows the name of the product. If I connect the new hdd via the keyboard usb, the disk utility is able to see and format it, but the hdd will be still slow and tikking after it.
Also I tried Disk Warrior (freezd out) and Techtool Pro 6 thanks to some ol'frineds - which also not saw the old hdd, but did nothing useful with the new one.
About cav green: I have 3 of them and no error so far, and got 4 1tb cav green in 2 mybook studio II also without any problem.
Iam a bit scared, and try not to plug in any usb hdd-s now, but I have to continue work, so I need solutions.
I hope if it is not hardware failure, maybe some tricky terminal code will bring back the viability of my old hdd - and I won't have to spend a lot of money to recover data.
    strange.
    if anybody has a clue?
    update 1:
    i found this post also:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15905481#15905481
I also made the mentioned steps - but it is a bit different sice it reproduce itself and I cant use DU.

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.
    thanks guys, thread is closed

  • Wirelessly connecting Windows laptops to an iMac G5 to share files Interne

I am wondering if someone could tell me how I can share files with windows PCs wirelessly but also securely. I have setup a network so that Windows PCs can access my iMac G5 that connects to the Internet through the airport card. I can get the windows PCs (laptops) to access the Internet through my iMac G5's airport card but I also want to share files back and forth wirelessly between the Windows PC laptops and the iMac G5. I am able to view all my iMac G5 files on my Windows PCs but that's not what I want. Isn't there a way to make it more secure so that only a shared folder is available for access by the Windows PCs? Right now if I go into Windows and setup a "My Network Places" then the PC has access to all those files on my iMac and that's not what I want. At this point someone with access to my iMac G5 could just wipe out everything. Not secure at all.
Could you guys give a novice some pointers?
I am still having problems with this. I can get my laptop to share my internet connection with my mac, but once I set a password on my Mac--well I can't get my laptop to connect. It is quite strange.
Someone suggested me to look here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1161.html
I tried to follow the directions on the link he suggested, but I'm using OS 10.3.9, so maybe that is the reason the directions are not exactly the same for my system.
Right now, I can open the System Preferences, go to Sharing preferences, turn on windows sharing...but that's as far as I can get.
Do you know if there is any document that can show me how to securely share files with a windows PC for my version of Mac OS?
I would also like a way to share files from my iMac to the Windows PC as well.
I have successfully been able to get my Windows Vista laptop sharing the internet connection with my iMac. The problem is that this connection is insecure, so therefore anyone can connect.
I have no idea and have not had luck finding any fix for this by browsing/search the knowledge database.
How can I set it so that anyone that wants to use the shared Ethernet connection (via my airport) has to input a password?
Every time I try to associate a password with the connection, my laptop is unable to share the connection any longer.
Windows will just tell me that the wireless connection is incompatible because of the security features of that network. It doesn't even ask me to input the password.
Besides this, I still am unable to get the file sharing to work. Is this because I'm also trying to share an internet connection between the two computers?? or...
After working on this problem for awhile, I've found some helpful information on the web that refers to connecting a Vista computer to a MAC with OS 10.5. Even though this is the case, I got my iMac to share it's internet connection and now I'm able to access the Windows vista laptop files on my iMac. I still, however, am unable to access the files on my iMac through the laptop. I've followed all the info on this website:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3022.html
but I'm still not having any luck.

  • New iMAC - want to connect PC Laptop to Internet via iMAC Airport

Hello - I have a new IMAC and the Internet connection to the IMAC is fine but I'm having trouble establishing a wireless network.
The store told me that I could use the Airport built into the MAC as a wireless router so that my PC laptop can access the Internet as well. My PC laptop is running Windows 2000 - and I have used it with a wireless router previously.
I can see the iMAC wireless network connection in my laptop's available network; however, I'm unable to connect to it.
Also, my IMAC system properties for Airport indicate that the wireless network is unavailable.
I've not selected any security settings - unless there's some default settings that I'm not aware of.
    Advice or suggestions please???

The store told me that I could use the Airport built into the MAC as a wireless router so that my PC laptop can access the Internet as well.
That's correct. You will be using your Mac OS X's Internet Sharing feature to share your iMac's wired Internet connection wirelessly, using the iMac's AirPort, to your PC laptop. However, you will not be able to use wireless security, as the only option available (WEP), for Internet Sharing, will only work with other Macs.
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Enable Software Firewall - iMac
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    - Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > PC laptop
    Setup Port Order - iMac
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
    - Verify that "Built-In Ethernet" is at the top of the list, followed by "AirPort".
    - Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection - iMac
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-In Ethernet > TCP/IP
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing - iMac
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
    - Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
    - To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    - AirPort Options
    -- Network Name: <anything you want>
    -- Channel: Automatic
    -- Click OK
    - Click Start

  • External Laptop Drive Enclosure - Connection Type question re ATV

I upgraded my new MBP with a 500gb internal drive and thus have the stock 250gb drive sitting idly by. I intend to stream movies to my ATV from my MBP and would like to use the 250gb drive connected externally to house the content.
My question is this, will the connection type (Firewire 800, USB 2, etc) make a difference in the stream quality?

no you should not notice any difference at all.

the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth

And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.

The question would be more appropriate in the Mac forums as it is not really related to the iPhone.
