Connecting FI to Catalyst 4500 switch

We are planning to connect Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect to (WS-X4648-RJ45-E) module on 4500 Catalyst Switch.
What SFP module do we need to install on the Fabric Interconnect for this connection ?

Catalyst 4500 switch loses startup-config
I have a Catalyst 4503 switch. When I reset the switch it boots to new configuartion wizard.
I am writing the configuration to NVRAM using the wr mem command. I believe it may be to do with the config register:
Cat4503#sh bootvar
BOOT variable does not exist
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable does not exist
Configuration register is 0x8101You are right change it to 0x2101 or 0x2102 and you should be fine . 0x2102 will require a boot statement to boot correctly where 0x2101 will just find the first image in bootflash and load that .

Block adding domain from the catalyst 4500 switch
Is there a way for me to block people from creating a workgroup domain from the switch? I only want one domain on my network. I do not want other people to connect to the switch and create a little workgroup.
short of blocking the TCP/UDP ports required for Windows browsing, there is no way to have cisco devices keep a user from connecting a PC to your network and configuring a new workgroup/domain. and this wont even stop them from doing it, this would just stop it from advertising and communicating with other workgroups/domains.
you could use 802.1x for authentication to connect a PC to a LAN switch port. this way only authenticated systems could connect to the network. -
We have a 1000v switch uplinked to nexus 5K and Catalyst 4500 switches. I can see all the VEMs(ESX servers) connected to the nexus 5K uplink switch and everything seems working fine. However, I am not able to see the VEMs uplinked to Cisco Catalyst 4500 switch. The "show Module" command shows all VEMs connected to the nexus 5K uplink switches but not the Catalyst 4500 switches.The log file on the 1000V shows the following:
7 09:36:21 NX-1K-100 %VMS-5-DVS_HOSTMEMBER_INFO: A host with name=[IP ADD. OF ESX SERVER] and uuid=[34393232-3035-3255-5839-3430303
03537] is added to the dvs. The host is not found as a module in the VSM configuration.
If anyone have run into similar situation, plpease let me know how you handled it.

I did all the checking....
1) all important VLANS including the control vlan are not blocked (No STP issue)
2) The Nexus 5K and the 4500 switch are in layer layer 2 ( They are not directly connected but are in layer two domain or no hop between them)
3) the ESX Server hosting the VSM is connected to the Nexus 5K
Here is some of the show commands that i run on the 4500 switch that is connects the ESX server to the rest ofd the network:-

I still don't see the VEM connected to port 1/38 of this switch on my nexus 1000v switch. The configuration file show exactly how many VEMs I have as shown below:

Best way to configure and connect two 4500 switches
I have a core 4507r+e in our production environment. We just acquired a 4500r and I would like to use it a distribution switch. What’s the best way to configure the new 4500r switch to connect to the core 4500 switch?

BTW, when you link your core to your distribution, the connecting link can be L2, L3 or both.
What I wanted to bring to your attention, 4500s can often easily oversubscribe some of their ports. Much depends on the sup and line cards being used. When you want to interconnect a core and distribution, you don't want to use a port that's something like 8:1 oversubscribed. (Further, if you're doing mostly L2, and all traffic L3 has to go to the core, depending on you traffic flows, a single link might have insufficient bandwidth.)
Also from core to distribution, if possible, it's good to avoid single points of failure. So if you only have one link between them, that link's transceivers (if used), the ports connected to, the line card connected to, are all single points of failure. (Of course, with only single sups in each chassis, that too is a single point of failure. From what you've described, from a performance and redundancy standpoint, you might actually be better off using a 4510R, with your two sups [if same model] and line cards - creating a collapsed core/distribution.) -

I have several Tape Autoloader Libraries from Dell which have Fibre Channel interfaces. I have loop switches that these connect to today. I also have a Catalyst 4506 with a WS-X4306-GB - 6-port GBIC Module. I would like to use the X4306 as a loop switch. Some of the libraries can also connect via point-to-point FC.
Can this be done? If yes, how do I start in making this happen?
Thank You.Sorry but the Catalyst 4500 does not support Fibre Channel connections on the WS-X4306-GB (or on any card). It's strictly an Ethernet switch. Reference
To mix and match Ethernet and FC interfaces, you'd have to be on a new platform like the Nexus 5k series - specifically the UP (Unified Port) variants. -
QoS trust dscp or cos on catalyst 4500
We have a 4510R with Cisco IOS Software, IOS-XE Software, Catalyst 4500 L3 Switch Software cat4500e-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 03.05.02.E RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1).
I want use qos trust dscp or qos trust cos on the interface conected to other cisco switch or wlan controller.
The current IOS version, do not support qos trust dscp:

What is the software that I need for this?. I tried with command lookup tool but the cat4500 do not appears.That is even new for me.
I did a search and found that, now a days you no longer have to provide the Trust DSCP command, it is by default trusted.

The answer to your question comes from the following excerpt :-
"Previously supervisor engines relied on “port trust” to classify traffic; however, this does not fall into the MQC CLI construct. MQC provides a more flexible capability, i.e. all traffic is trusted by default, an administrator can change this trust state using a policy map. Another difference is the “internal DSCP” value used within the switch to place packets in the proper queue.
Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engines do not use “internal DSCP”; rather, it relies on explicit matching of QoS values using class maps so that packets can be placed in the correct queue.
Also, note that there is no specific priority queue: it is not queue 3 or queue 1. The priority queue is simply configured within a class; therefore, it is not tied to a specific queue. One final difference is that of classification. Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engines provide sequential classification rather than parallel. This allows the network administrator to classify traffic at egress based on the ingress markings. These markings can be done unconditionally, using a policer or using a table map. Based on these changes, QoS CLI will now be more contiguous on the Supervisor Engines as it will now have standard Cisco MQC CLI, making configuration management much simpler"

Nexus 5548 and Define static route to forward traffic to Catalyst 4500
Dear Experts,
Need your technical assistance for the Static routing in between Nexus 5548 and Catalyst 4500.
Further I connected both Nexus 5548 with Catalyst 4500 as individual trunk ports because there is HSRP on Catalyst 4500. So I just took 1 port from each nexus 5548, make it trunk with the Core Switch (Also make trunk from each Switch each port). Change the speed on Nexus to 1000 because other side on Catalyst 4500 line card is 1G RJ45.
*Here is the Config on Nexus 5548 to make port a Trunk:*

Added the static route on both nexus for Core HSRP IP: *ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.150.39 (Virtual HSRP IP )*
But I could not able to ping from N5548 Console to core Switch IP of HSRP? Is there any further configuration to enable routing or ping?

We have a VSS based on 2x WS-C4500X-16., The VSS is used as Layer 2 Switch for diffrents Vlan in our DC.
After making the VSS as a Layer 3 gateway for our production VLAN and added 2 routes for routing purposes, we encountered a network down time with high CPU in the VSS and a huges log messages :

Using Catalyst 3550 Switch with Linksys Home Router and Cable Internet
I've about pulled what little hair I have out of my head on this one, and need some configuration help.
I have a Cisco Catalyst 3550 switch with five Windows 7 desktops, an Avaya PBX and five Avaya IP phones attached. All of these devices are on a 192.168.0.0/24 subnet, and are communicating properly. I will refer to this as network # 1. I also have SEPARATE network, we'll call network # 2, using AT&T ADSL service and a Netgear 4-port/wireless router/ADSL modem combo device, which is functioning properly with a couple of other Windows 7 desktops over its own wired Ethernet network, using DHCP, and also on a 192.168.0.0/24 subnet. I thought it would be a simple integration, just plugging one of the 3550's ports to one of the DSL router's ports, in order to give the five Windows 7 desktop computers on network # 1 internet access via the DSL modem. Guess I was wrong. When I connect the two switches together, although I get a good connectivity (green lights on both ports) and am able to ping the DSL router's gateway address (192.168.0.252) from network # 1's computers, the computers on network # 1 cannot access the internet. Also, the working computers on network # 2 lose their internet access as long as the two switches are connected together. I am not a Cisco guru, but there's got to be a way to make this scenario work. Can someone provide me with a 3550 configuration that will allow me to extend my internet service from network # 2 on the DSL router to my 3550 switch and their computers? Here's what I am looking for:
INTERNET ---> ADSL MODEM ---> NETGEAR ROUTER ---> CISCO 3550 SWITCH ---> NETWORK DEVICES WITH INTERNET ACCESSThe Netgear router is probably what's doing the natting. Is the 3550 configured for routing or is it straight L2? If you have the 3550 configured as L3, then it's going to be easy to do what you want. Just add a static route on the Netgear to point the subnet that it doesn't know about to the 3550. For example, if the Netgear is addressed at 192.168.1.1 and the Cisco 3550 is addressed at 192.168.1.2, but it also knows about the 192.168.0.0/24 (separate vlan), then you would put a static route on your Netgear for 192.168.0.0/24 to go to 192.168.1.2.
The way that I would do it is to create a separate vlan on the 3550 and assign an address to it. Once you do that, make the port that the other switch connects to an access port of that vlan. (It would need to be on the same subnet as the existing equipment.) All of your devices would use it as a default gateway and then you would do the rest as above. You could also use RIP between the Netgear and Cisco if you can't do static routing.

Troubleshooting Fiber Connection on a Catalyst 2960
I am trying to test my fiber connectivity on a Catalyst 2960 before I deploy it. So what I thought I would do is connect it to another switch in my office with a open port for the fiber connection. The other switch is a Catalyst 3560G. Here are the port configurations:

The first one is the catalyst 2960 and the 3560G is the second.
When you show the interface for each of these it shows that it recognizes the media but the line protocal and the GigbitEthernet Port is down.
Any Ideas?Sorry... a fiber optic cable with a connector on each end.
To aid in troubleshooting, many times we loopback the signal back to the originating device. An optical loopback is just connecting the transmit (Tx) to the receive (Rx).
The multimode SFP/GBIC transceiver you are using will allow you to directly connect the Transmit and Receive ports without damage to the unit. This should provide you with a green link LED.
If so, then you can reconnect your fibers and loopback (connect the two fibers together) at the far end of the fiber link (use an optical adapter) and see if you get a green LED. -
Catalyst 1900 switch issue - internal speed
Hello,
I have a catalyst 1900 switch which has been working for years without any issues. It is connected to a single subnet on one side (10 machines all on same class C) and to a service provider switch on the other.
Recently the ftp speeds from machine to machine on the inside became very slow (20K) on a 10M port, slightly faster on the 100M port.
The external (internet side) to internal machines however has not changed and is still fast as ever.
Has anyone ever come across this sort of problem and if so where could I start to troubleshoot it ?

The switch (LAN side) is connected directly to 10 machines (these are webservers with multiple IPs configured)

*** Uptime is 19days (after a reset to try to find this problem)
*** STP (port fast mode) is enabled on all ports
*** Monitoring the receive statstics for each port shows FCS errors and Alignment Errors about 2% (each) of the total good frames. I am not sure if this is normal however there were always some FCS and Alignment errors.
*** Monitoring transmit statistics shows no errors.
*** the switch reloads when reset
*** not sure how to get crashinfo on this switch.

LMS 3.2 and Catalyst 4500 WS-X4648-RJ45-E module card

I have a rpoblem with a specific client with LMS 3.2. We are using LMS 3.2 on Windows 2008 and everything seem to be working OK. The issue is in the CiscoView with the 4500 switches. CiscoView can see the supervisors on all 4500 switches (6); but cannot see the switchcards when the switchcards are WS-X4648-RJ45-E. Find the sh inv output below:

I have exactly the same issue with LMS 3.2 CiscoView under Windows 2003 and catalyst switch 4506-E.
4506-E are in IOS 12.2(53)SG2.
I installed latest 4500IOS V 19.0 ciscoview device package without success.

Erasing a config and vlan.dat file in Catalyst 4507R Switch

I am unable to erase the configuration from Catalyst 4507R Switch.When i do "write erase" and reload the switch,the configuration still remains on the switch.

After this i did reload and configuration still didn't get removed.

To erase the vlan.dat file on the 6500/6000 switches, issue the erase const_nvram: command. On the 4500/4000 switches, issue the erase cat4000_flash: command. On the fixed configuration switches, issue the delete flash:vlan.dat command.
