Connecting firewire 400 to a macbook pro?

which cable would i be needing to connect my m-audio projectmix to my macbook pro 13.3" ?
i'm pretty sure the projectmix uses a firewire 400 cable but obviously this doesnt fit my macbook i think its the 6pin 400 cable that i currently have
also, just a little side question, what cable would i need for my vga monitor so i can use dual screens?
cheers,
nick

Nick,
Be careful plugging in a firewire m-audio device ( or any external FW and USB) if your computer is not turned off. It is best once to start up once the drivers have been loaded and the computer is being started after being completely shut down, once connected it's best to just leave it connected. Of course if you travel it is fine to disconnect but reconnect it while in the shut down state then start up. I have the M-audio Ozonic firewire keyboard and it has a on/off switch, it powers through the firewire cable and in my case it is a fw 400 cable. There are fw 400 to fw 800 cables and adapters available, on Ebay they are a few dollars be careful not to order it from Hong Kong, there are plenty available in the US, I suggest Ebay because every-time I try to get these cool 400 to 800 adapters they are sold out, but I actually love the 400 to 800 cables too. Obviously 400 is half the speed as 800 but there is a little brother to these connection called firewire iEEE 1394, it is like a micro sized connection similar to mini-usb. The speed of the iEEE 1394 varies per system and cable.
As far as connecting dual monitors. You can get the proper adapter from the Apple store or Apple store online. Look up the manual for your system on Apple.com in the support section and it will actually tell you exactly which adapter to use.
I am currently using two systems, With my PowerBook G4 I can connect a monitor to it, and when the system is started up (seeing it is always best to connect cables with no power source connected to any item, monitor or computer and once it is connected the power source may be connected again as well and the system started up, in order to prevent frying or surging) It should recognize your monitor, I have a "24 Acer and I had to only pick which monitor would be where as to it's position to on screen movement. It recognized the proportions and everything perfectly. So I at that point have the option of running dual(split) screens or I can just run the laptop with the lid closed and using only one screen, if I choose that, but I have tons more success with using dual monitors. I just got a Mac Pro and I am super excited because now I will be connecting two FULL sized monitors.... All for music and video work...
I hope that doesn't sound confusing, if you open up your monitor selections at the top menu bar between your Bluetooth setting and Audio volume adjustment setting, you can then choose the correct monitor settings if they have not already auto detected like mine did.. It is nice too.. but the Acer has DVI. I also have a Vizio monitor which I tested my G5 connected with a DVI adapter from the computer to VGA on the Vizio monitor and my Mac found it as soon as the start up was complete and perfectly, it matched the screen resolution and looks beautiful as well.
I love Apples because they are actually fun to work with, I don't mind trouble shooting if you have problems so hit me back if you have other questions or if I have completely scrambled your brains with all the jargin of Firewire and Dual this and that.. Who knows you may have figured this all out before now but either way.. blessings in your direction.
Keep on Keepin' on....

Hi All, I am hoping to connect my G4 Cube to my Macbook Pro via firewire. The cube has Firewire 400 and the macbook Pro had Firewire 800.

I have not got a DVD Drive with the cube so I am hoping to try and boot via firewire mode with the DVD drive in the Macbook Pro.

Is anyone having a problem connecting 400 firewire thru an adapter for the 800 firewire port on a Macbook Pro 2011? It does a kernel panic every time I connect it. Is there a "proper way" to connect it? Just in case it makes a difference I am trying to hook up an Avid Mbox Pro for Pro tools.

What is the part number and model of Firewire adapter?
I have used them in the past without any problems whatsoever.

  • Trying to connect Canon MD101 camera to MacBook Pro

I am trying to connect my Canon MD101 video camera to my MacBook Pro so I can get the videos off it.
I have connected the camera and laptop using a 9-Pin to 4-Pin firewire cable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001IUM20C/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_ 3p_M3T1_dp_1
You can see the connections in the 2 pictures below.
When I plug in the cable the camera does not appear in Finder or on the Desktop or anywhere that I've looked. I could succesfully connect the camera to my old laptop using a 4-Pin to 4-Pin firewire cable, but my MacBook Pro doesn't have a 4-Pin port.
Does anyone know how I can connect my camera to my MacBook Pro? Am I using the wrong cable or is it just not possible to make this connection? The camera is quite old, bought it in 2007. Any help is appreciated!!
    Rob.

Hi Bob. Yes, I did get it to work and I can now get my videos off the camera and onto my laptop. I use the same cable that i was talking about in the original post.
The camera has to be plugged in to the laptop and turned on. I have my camera set to 'Play' (The power switch on the camera gives a choice of 'Play', 'Off' or 'Camera'). I then open iMovie. In iMovie I go to 'File' then 'Import Media'. A window called 'Import' should open up and then you just click the 'Import' button in the bottom right. I hope this works for you. It's pretty simple, I was just surprised that the camera doesn't appear in Finder.

I have also a Minolta Multiscan with a Firewire IEEE 1394 cable.
I cannot use it on the MBP as it is a Firewire 800 but after looking into the solutions on the net, I figured out I need an adaptor from Firewire IEEE to Firewire 800...isn't it?
Yes, you'll need a FW 800 to 400 cable. The device will run at FW400 speed. Here's one example: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-FireWire-Cable-130849-Orange/dp/B001NXDQAY

How to connect an external monitor to macbook pro. The monitor has no usb connecter, only a port.

Most MacBook Pro models have a Mini DVI port, a Mini DisplayPort or a ThunderBolt port for connecting an external display. USB does not have enough bandwidth to support a responsive display connection.
What model MacBook Pro do you have, by year, CPU speed or MacBook Pro 3.1 designation?

be sure to have an external trackpad keyboard or mouse as you will loose them on the computer once it is closed.

How do I connect two monitors to my macbook pro?  This question applies to both DVI and VGA, as I might have to work with multiple sets of monitors.

The MacBookPro only has enough horsepower in the video card for one external monitor.
If you want two or more, you need a MacPro.
Or a MacBook Pro and a Remote Desktop controlled MacMini.

Why can't I connect to iCloud on my macbook pro?

Not sure what you've tried so far to connect. But, make sure you have an Internet connection and log into iCloud with your Apple ID/password from System Preferences/iCloud.
If the OS X you're running is prior to 10.7, you won't be able to use iCloud as this feature was added to OS X beginning with OS X Lion (10.7).

After connecting my iphone to my Macbook Pro to download photos to my phone yesterday, my Pages application is gone from my computer. The icon is still in the dock. What happened and how do I get it back? Its not in my trash or anywhere else.

The other 2 applications open like normal. All three give me info.
    Pages     ver.4.1          265.8MB
    Numbers ver. 2.1          89.5MB
    Keynote ver. 5.1.1        238.1MB
They all list Apr 3 as the last time opened. That was when I upgraded to Mavericks. I certainly used pages and numbers since then as I have alot of my work files on this computer?
Just very odd. I did find my original iWorks disc from when I bought the computer. I'm assuming i can reinstall it. Will try that. Thank you for all your help. Would still like to know what did happen?

  • Help! My Canon MG5520 printer is apparently not connected to my late 2013 MacBook Pro!

Help! My Canon MG5520 printer is apparently not connected to my late 2013 MacBook Pro! I have had this printer a few months and everything has been working fine until today. I did I have to turn my wifi router on and off this morning, so I think that might be it. I'm not extremely tech savy, so if anyone could lend a hand, I would appreciate it!! I've tried unplugging it, turning it on and off again, quitting it my from laptop, nothing works. Do I need to reconnect it to the wifi? How do I do this? I turns on fine and doesn't give my any error messages, it'st just my laptop that says it isn't connected. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Thanks for providing complete information.  It seems like you've ruled out faulty docking cable, bad USB port, and software issue on the new Mac.  And since the shuffle still works fine on the older Mac, it's not a problem on the shuffle.
    Some things to try...
Connect the MacBook to its power adapter, so that it's not running the battery power.  If any other USB devices are connected, try connecting the shuffle as the only device, to a direct USB port on the MacBook.
If you can keep it connected for long enough, go to the shuffle's Settings screen in iTunes and set it to Enable disk use (and Apply).  This will keep the shuffle's disk mounted continuously, instead of iTunes unmounting the shuffle's disk when not syncing.
If you happen to have an old USB 2.0 hub that has its own power supply, connect the shuffle through the hub to see if that make any difference.  The new Macs have USB 3.0, so if that's the cause, maybe a USB 2.0 hub in between can act as a "buffer" and make it work.
