Connecting from RMAN

Question

I had previously posted a request for difficulty in connecting to Catalog and Target database simultaneously. But I got over the problem though I am not clease as to how it could happen. Without setting the instance after connecting to UNIX, if username@instance/pwd is used I am able to get into both databases. If I set the SID to any of the number of instances running in the system and try connecting I am not able to connect.
After connecting without setting SID, if I try to backup using RMAN I am getting the errorRMAN-03022: compiling command: allocate
RMAN-06191: PL/SQL package rman.DBMS_RCVCAT version 08.01.06 in RCVCAT database is too new
RMAN-06439: RMAN must be upgraded to version 08.01.06 to work with this package
RMAN-03026: error recovery releasing channel resources

Both versions of RMAN are in the system and since the SID is not set, I presume that it is taking the default one and I am unable to resolve this issue.

Based on the error, I am assuming that you have a newly create repository with database version 8.1.6 and you are trying to backup a target database with a version lower than 8.1.6.
Try this:
connect to the rman schema in the repository database --> sqlplus rman/rman
There should be a table called CONFIG.
If the table CONFIG exist, then check to see if there are any rows with the name
= to 'compatible'.
if not then,
INSERT INTO config VALUES('compatible', '080004');
otherwise,
update config set value='080004' where name='compatible';
****NOTE: There should ONLY be 1 row with the name = 'compatible' in the table CONFIG.
