Connecting guitar to Garageband finally

Greetings,
I have played acoustic guitar for many years. I wouldn't classify myself as an expert nor a novice, just somewhere in between. I recently decided that I want to mess around with Garageband a little bit and I have looked at the Apogee Duet as a perfect medium to get hooked up.
I currently own 4 guitars (Guild, Taylor, Gibson & a cheap Takamine Jasmine) The only one that is acoustic/electric is the Takamine Jasmine and it sounds "just OK" compared to the rest.
Even though I have played several years, I have never used or messed around with many amps or effects, and especially different ways to connect the guitar to the amp or in this case the computer. What would be the preferred way to get this done? Shold I get a microphone and place close to my better guitars or should I get a separate "hook-on" pickup to get this done? What if I want to try some of the built-in heavy amps/effects to mimc an electric for my acoustics without the pickup. Can they still produce effects with a mic only?
Any guidance or recommendation would be appreciated?
Thanks

a lot of that is really opinion.
Mine is that Mics are the way to go without question. If you're going to choose a Duet as your interface (a very good choice) and have 2 mics, you should be able to record some very good sound:

and yes, you can use effects no matter how you record

  • Problem connecting guitar to garageband on macbook pro 13 inch

hi, how can i connect my guitar to the garageband if i want to record sounds? i am using 13 inch macbook pro which only has one audio port ( well, 15 inch has 2 ports ).. or do i need some interface devices?

If the audio port is only a headphone port and not a combined line-in/line-out port, then you need a mac-compatible interface. See the FAQ for a list of some commonly used interfaces:

If your guitar has a usb connector you could just plug it into an USB port.

  • Connecting Guitar to Garageband

Hi - I am new to Garageband and to Macs in general and I would like to lay down some guitar tracks on top of the groove I put together using the GB loops. I have heard that it is best to use a firewire/USB interface such as a Firebox to connect to the computer. I am wondering if some of you out there have used this piece of gear and what your experiences are with it, or with others like it.

Thanks for all of the responses! I ended up purchasing a PreSonus Firebox. I was trying to install Cubase LE that came with it and apparently there is some known issue with the version of Cubase and MacOSX. It is version 1.07. Steinberg doesnt' seem to offer any patch for it nor does Apple that I can find. I bought the unit second hand, so I am not sure what recourse I have.
On another note, I have a Fender Deluxe amplifier with a Preamp Out - is that the same as a Line Out? Can I use that to connect to the Firebox? I haven't set it all up yet as I just got it.

When I connect my guitar to garageband all the sound are cut. What canI do?

Command I will open the master window on the right. Make sure under "I"nfo lower right corner next to monitor, make sure it is not turned off. If you are playing an elctric guitar, don't bother with the no feedback setting.
Make sure the volume in system prefs is up and not muted. (system prefs.sound.output)

  • Need help connecting guitar, a/i, speaker together.

I'm new to this forum, and sure this has been covered, but i couldn't find what i'm trying to do. I want to connect my guitar to garageband, then output it live to either my stereo. I have an airport express connected to stereo if that helps me or not. At this point i can connect the guitar into my m-audio fast track usb, then into garageband. this works fine for playing through the built in speakers or headphones. I'm having problems finding a way to output live to speakers. Do i need to buy apple speakers to connect directly to my powerbook or can i output to my stereo. Also i might buy an amplifier to play on soon, and was wondering on how to connect that so that i can still go through garageband. I'm new to both garageband and playing guitar so any help would be greatly appreciated. - aaron
ps also if any one knows of garageband friendly sites that will show tab and strumming patterns to to learn to play popular songs that would be cool too.

Either go out from the Macs audio out or your fast track to your stereo.

  • How can I listen to a song from my song list and play my guitar on GarageBand at the same time?

I want to listen to a song on my song list and play my guitar through GarageBand along with the song. I tried to do the iCloud thing but could not figure it out.

Not at this time. iTunes Match downloads all music listened to on iOS devices. Period.

  • Plugging guitar into garageband

I recently purchased an adaptor that goes into my headphone jack so that i could plug my guitar into garageband and record it. How do I adjust the settings so that garageband recognizes the guitar in order to play and record with it.

The headphone jack of your Mac? That's an OUT, not an IN. Use the input jack. (Unless you have a MacBook with a dual purpose jack. In that case I believe you have to set it as IN in System Prefs.)
Then in GarageBand Prefs>Audio/MIDI set the input to the built-in option.

  • How do you input guitar in GarageBand on iMac

I've tried to input my guitar into GarageBand on my iMac, but have not been very successful. How can i do this?  I have iRig, and plug it into the back port, but that doesn't work.  I also have a USB Guitar Link that works with Amplitube 3 that is on the same iMac, but doesn't work with GarageBand.  I've tried changing the input choices under preferences, but no luck.  With the USB Guitar Link, the Audio Preferences menu gives me the choice of "USB Audio CODEC" and I choose that...but, that doesn't work either.  The ONLY thing that has worked is the "Built-In Microphone"...but that records everything in the room...and its of very low quality.  Any help is appreciated.

    yes this will work
you can also get a splitter cable that goes in to your in/out port so you can have 2 (or more) separate ports

  • Connecting Electric Guitar to Garageband on G5 iMac

I've seen other discussions about this, but cannot figure out this seemingly simple process.
-I connected the guitar via 1/4 to 1/8 cables into the "line in" port on the back of the iMac.
-I chose "real instrument" when adding a new track in garageband
-I made sure that the sound input preferences under system preferences correctly states "line in" (and not internal audio/speakers).
-I have the drop down menu set to "Monitor On" and the Sound menu to "Stereo"
(even when I mess with these settings nothing gets recorded).
When I hit record nothing comes through the computer - nothing gets recorded.
Do I need the Griffin iMac or similar device?
    Any suggestions?

it depends which iMac you're using:

  • Need help connecting guitar rig interface to play electric guitar

I am having trouble connecting a guitar rig session interface. Garageband is not recognizing the connection. i have made sure the usb and guitar cables work. i have changed the sound input settings on both the system and garage band. when i plug in my keyboard directly with the usb, garageband recognizes it immediately. i have triple checked all the obvious settings on all devices. It seems that the interface is working, but im having a tough time recognizing it on garageband. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

i reinstalled the guitar rig sessions driver and finally had garageband recognize the device, but still have not gotten input or sound. i have read the manual, but could not locate an answer.

  • Connecting guitar to computer

I'm just starting w garageband. I have a Mac Powerbook G4, a fender electric guitar and a fender cybertwin amp. The amp has various jacks: midi in, midi out, midi thru, xlr r & l lines out, spdif output for connection to digital equipment such as a digital recorder. Can I connect my guitar to my Mac through this amp to record guitar tracks. If so which amp jack to which port on the computer?

I have several pedals that I had prior to purchase of my Mac Pro. The only thing I wonder now is how they will work going into Garage Band with all my pedals including a Route 66 Compression/Overdrive (my favorite) or DOD Supra Distortion which are both hot pedals. I also have a Boss Digital Delay which is another stereo pedal. As long as I turn these pedals way down and turn them up slowly there should not be a problem right? The Mac apparently has some pretty hot settings since they hum like a pedal turned up. I also want to know if plugging the jack in while everything is on will be a problem. When some of the pedals are powered up they automatically come on. Or is it simply okay to make sure they are turned down before powering up the pedals since the Cool Cat, Supra Distortion and Digital Distortion all come on at the same time when they get power. (Tubes don't mind this feature.) I wish Garage Band had more "tube like" sound profiles. Tubes have such a warm rich sound.
For the cable connection, I will try the mono to stereo to see how it works. But I do like the stereo effect however. I appreciate your input.

  • Connected guitar with 1/8" to 1/4" – sound is "clicky"

I recently purchased the Griffin guitar cable (1/4" -> 1/8"), and I'm experiencing a very "clicky" sound in Garageband, as though the sound of my pick touching the strings is overbearing the actual sound of the guitar.
I'm connecting a Yamaha APX500 acoustic/electric, and have the volume on the guitar set to medium/high with the EQ set flat.
Has anyone experienced this before who can help out?
    Thanks!

I don't think i can buy something like this in my country
But can try to find something similar USB to guitar cable...
It this doesn't work then the problem is in the sound card. I gues
