  • I'd like to connect my new iMac (2013) to my cable box to watch tv in my kitchen how do I do it?

I am interested in using the iMac we keep in the kitchen as a tv. Can I connect it to my cable box and use it that way? The iMac is new. I purchased it about 6 months ago. It's the smaller of the two sizes.

Not really. The only way is to have a system to Stream the TV images to the computer. To do what you want, Cable box to computer, you would have to use the computer as just a screen (TV) and although there is a way to use the iMac as a screen for another computer, Target Screen Mode, that won't work for connecting a cable box to it.

  • I have an older HDTV with only 1 HDMI connection. I use a Bose 3.2.1. GS Series II system and have a HDTV cable box. Bose system has no HDMI. How can I connect an Apple TV to this system?

I have an older flat panel HDTV with only 1 HDMI connection which is being used through my cable box for TV reception.  I also use a Bose 3.2.1. GS Series II home theatre system.  It has no HDMI inputs. Can I use an Apple TV with my present system?  I'd prefer not hearing, "buy a new flat panel."

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.

  • Windows Media Center on my HP TouchSmart PC won't switch channels on my attached Cable Box.

Have a Motorola DCX3501-M DVR (cable box) connected to my HP TouchSmart PC (Win 7 64-bit) in order to view and record HDTV channels.  Problem is I can't get Windows Media Center to communicate with the cable box properly, e.g., when I select a channel to view in WMC (using the PC's remote control) it does not tell the cable box to switch to that channel.  I have the IR cable connected from the rear of the PC and affixed to the front panel of the cable box.  How can I get the cable box to work properly with this PC?

    Hello Curly2U:
Did you connect the IR cables correctly ?http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Video-Solutions/Products/Video-CPE/All-Digital-Set-Tops/DCX3501-...  Now I look up your cable box.  Take the IR cable that is connected from p.c. IR out port and plug the other end directly into EXT IR IN port. Next to IEEE 1384 and Power  Cord ports. I really do not see how a p.c. remote can control any thing but the computer because these remotes do not have a option to add codes to them like a universal remote does. They also do not have special butons to allow you to contol other devices such as tv's or stereos and cable boxes like a universal remote does. I checked our Help and Support and did not see anything about mentioning controlling other devices.
You might want to by pass the cable box altogether and  directly plug the cable antenna wire directly into the computer and see if it can tune in cable channels. You might not need the cable box after all. There are two antenna ports on your computer try switching the cable antenna arround. I found out  one antenna port olnly picked up one channel and when I switched the cable cable arround I was able to pick up all the channels.

  • HD TV and cable box

We purchases a new 32" LG television from best buy and brought it home to hook it up to the motorola dvr cable box provided to us by the cable company.  We're pretty low tech so it seems simple, the cable into the dvr, the hd cable from the dvr into the back of the new tv and both the tv and the cable box plugged into a surge protector (in other words, the tv is NOT plugged into the dvr box).  Things work well enough once you have everything on, but when the tv gets turned off, the dvr automatically powers down....all the way down....to a black screen.  Then, when you turn the tv on and wait a half minute or so, the cable box powers up, then goes black again, the the time comes on but there is no power.  At this point, you have to turn the power on the cable box.  After that you have to use the tv remote to switch the input from hd port 1 ( where the cable is plugged in) to hd port 2 (where there is no connection) then back to hd port 1 to get the tv to recognize the signal from the dvr.
I trouble shot some with the cable company this am and have an appointment for them to come check it out because they are stumped but I thought I would put it out there and see if anyone had any additional trouble shooting measures to try before the "cable guy" comes.

Don't be SO quick to knock the "low quality/Monster Cable" myth. Although it is not the case here, a low quality cable are more prone to failure. But still dang few and far between. I would rather buy 20 $5 dollar HDMI cables than 1 Monster Cable. But with digital it either works or it doesn't.
It COULD be a HDMI handshake error. But my first question is, do you have one remote programmed to control both your TV and DVR? For examply, my DirecTV box and TV in the guest room (basic setup) remote, is setup to send two separate IR commands when I hit the off button. One command to turn off the DVR and one to turn off the TV. If your setup is NOT like this then it sounds like a HDMI-CEC issue.
I would look into your DVR and/or TV settings and look for options called "HDMI Control" or similar and try turning it all off, and see if the problem still happens.

  • How to connect with a cable box

I cannot seem to find any information on how to connect up an Apple TV in a system that has an external cable box. I live in NY City where you cannot get cable TV without the external cable box. Where in the set up (along with my DVD player and component audio) do I fit the AppleTV?
    PowerBook G4 15FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1GB RAM

I've used a 5 X 1 HDMI switch from Monoprice.com and it works just fine. I only have two HDMI inputs on my TV and use one just for the cable box and the other has the 5X1 switch hooked to it. The five ports are: a Toshiba DVR, a Mac Mini, an Apple TV, a DVI to HDMI cable for my MacBook and a spare port hopefully a HD-DVD some day.
One problem is if you calibrate the HDMI port on the TV to a device on the switch, when you switch to a different device the picture may not be optimal for that second (third, fourth or fifth) device. This is not the fault of the switch, rather a function having different devices on one HDMI port.
Rarely, very rarely, when switching to the Apple TV you need to tell it the resolutions for the TV.
Finally, if you are impatient, it takes three seconds or so when switching between devices. Otherwise a switch works great for me.

  • Connecting Panasonic HD TVs to HD Cable box

I have 2 HD Panasonic TVS. I have tried to connect them to a Verizon 6200 Cable box. This does not have a DVR. When I connect using the HDMI connetion there is no picture or sound. If I connect these TVS to a HD CAble box with multi room DVR they connect.
I have contacted Panasonic and Verizon and have received little help.

This post belongs in the FiOS TV Technical Assistance board, but I will reply.
Need more information on your setup. What is your DVR box model?
Have you tried the 6200s with component cables? If so do they work?
Are the 6200 doxes connected directly HDMI to the TV?
I have heard of issues with HDMI and QIP-6xxx series boxes, and much has been done to resolve these issues with upgrades and changes to the img software. If you must have HDMI and the DVR is the QIP-7xxx series, you may want to see if you can get the QIP-6200 boxes upgraded. But it may be difficult to get both boxes replaced if component cables work.

  • HT4366 Will appletv work if connected to the DirecTV cable box instead of the TV?

My tv is mounted on the wall so I don't want to have the hdmi cable hanging down the wall to the appletv.  Will it work if I plug it into my cable box?

The Apple TV connects to a spare HDMI port on your TV. It has nothing to do with your DVR.

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • HT201335 I want to hook up an Apple TV device to my TV but only have one HDMI connection that's already used  for my HD cable box. Can I connect the Apple TV device to my TV that has  s video, PC in and  component jacks unused ?

I want to hook up Apple TV but my One HDMI Jack on my TV is already connected to my HD cable box. My TV has jacks for s video, component, and PC in jacks.
Can I use one of them to connect to Apple TV with some type of cable to my newer I-pad ?

Here are the Apple TV outputs.

  • Can someone tell me how to connect my MacBook directly to my DSL cable modems BYPASSING by wireless connection?SING

Hi all.  Can someone tell me how connect my MacBook directly to my DSL cable modem bypassing my wireless connection?  thanks in advance.
(the Maverick upload that was pushed out last month will not load for me -- keeps starting and stopping.  just read a review where someone had the same issue and once they bypassed their wireless connection, it worked just fine.)

For the "Arangements" option to appear, the external display must be turned on with the correct input selected and connected to the computer.  Then close system prefs, reopen, go to "Display" and "Arrangement" will be along the top.

  • My TV is mounted on a wall so I can't connect the Apple TV device. Is it possible to connect to an HD Cable Box and send signal to TV that way? Other problem is that Box only has one HDMI socket .. Help!

My TV is mounted on a wall so I can't connect the Apple TV device. Is it possible to connect to an HD Cable Box and send signal to TV that way? Other problem is that Box only has one HDMI socket so would also have to use a splitter. Tried Apple Support but couldn't offer a solution. I can't be the only person with this issue surely?
    Help!

No, unless you are using a home theatre system already, your only option is to connect to the TV.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

But now I don't know how to show the Ipad screen on the PC, as if it was a monitor / screen, so that I can then use Lync and share my PC screen with people virtually.
    Thanks for any help! Regards

Hi Rob - thanks so much for your help!  Could you tell me what "air sever or reflector apps." are? and where can I look for information about them?
Do you use them on the Ipad or on the PC?
Do I need a cable too and which one?
Sorry... I am not very technical as you can see, thanks for your help.
