Connecting HDV camcorder (component/HDMI) to MacPro for Ustream?

How can I connect my HDV camcorder (Panasonic AG-HMC150) using the component out or HDMI out to my Macbook Pro (newest model) for use with Ustream?  An option I was looking at but not avaiable yet is the Blackmagic Intensity Extreme.  Is there something else anyone has tried to get an HD live stream into thier Macbook for something like Ustream?
Thanks!!!
Michael

Issue solved for now with a pc laptop. I still can't do it with any Apple products, but since I have 56 views and no replies other than my own, I guess it's not possible to hook up an Apple product this way. The pc laptop worked right away with just an HDMI cable. We can close this question. Thanks.

Trying to connect Apple TV (2g) HDMI to HDTV with only component video input.  Can I use a simple cable or do I need a converter box/plug? Is the HDMI signal coming from ATV encrypted or HDCP enabled?
The TV is HD, but only has a component input and not HDMI.  Apple TV 2g only has HDMI output.

    google component hdmi converter
but they are pretty expensive and may not work at all
and will not work with any DRM material as in movies you reant and maybe netflix and the sports thingy

no need to go for an expensive HDMI cable as Varjak Paw rightly suggests.
Pretty much all of them come with 1.4 standard these days.
The difference in price is made by additional shielding and material used for the wire - hardly ever needed at home installations - unless you get interference from other devices.
    on the other note.
one HDMI in your TV is obviously not ideal as well as using HDMI splitter or hub - but it should work.
Also I know cases that some LG TV models do not work with Apple TV - which was confirmed by LG technical support.
Those are rare cases and i do not want to worry you at this stage.

There are only two types of HDMI cables (standard and high speed - listen to all 1.2, 1.3 etc etc nonsense they will try to tell in the store) both types will work with the Apple TV.
The cable may be faulty though, have you got another to try, what exactly is happening.

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

  • Cannot connect HDV camcorders

Hi.  I'm having trouble connecting my Sony HDV camcorder.  I get the "Unable to intialize HDV deck.  Please make sure a deck is connected and try again" message.  Until recently, I have had no problems connecting to my HDV camera, and I still can connect to a standard definition camcorder (Sony TRV-25).
I am using the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 option under Easy Setup, which, again, has worked just fine in the past.
I just downloaded the Preference Manager application to clear out all preferences, and I'm still getting the same result.
I have switched out FireWire cables (four-pin to eight-pin).  That did not improve the situation.  And I get the same result with two different HDV camcorders (a Sony HVR-A1U and a Sony HDR-HC7).
When I connect the FireWire four-pin connector to the camera, the HDV in/out iLink indicator comes on for about a second and then goes away.  In the past, it would stay on for the entire time while it was connected.
This is with Final Cut Express 4, on an iMac, on Mac OS 10.6.8.
I would appreciate any insight that you may have.
    Thanks!

Hi, Al and Martin.  I truly appreciate your time and effort on this!
Below, I have include some screeshots below - the Easy Setup menu, the properties of a typical sequence, the "Unable to initialize" message, and the FireWire indicators under System Settings -- Network (which indicates no device is connected.) and About This Mac.
These are the messages that I get with the HDV camera on and in the Play/Edit mode, no downconverting selected, and physically connected to the computer with a FireWire cable.  I have tried two FireWire cables and two different HDV camcorders with the same result.I am able to connect an external drive via the FireWire with success, as well as a standard definition camcorder (the TRV-25, screenshot of that also below).
Since I am able to connect other devices, I would be inclined to think it is some settings with either the camcorders or FCE.  But I have checked and double-checked these, as well as rebooting and trashing the FCE preferences.  Is there anything else that I may be missing?
I'm getting ready to go over to a friend's house to try his iMac to see what results I get there.  I will let you know.
    Thanks again!

  • Help: 2011 imac 27" won't detect External Display connected via thunderbolt to HDMI

I have an 2011 imac 27" and I'm trying to connect an Acer 23" monitor as an external display. I'm using a miniDV(thunderbolt) to hdmi cable. For some reason the computer is unable to detect the display. However when I reboot into windows via bootcamp, the display is detected and works perfectly.. Any way to force thunderbolt to detect this?

Well, weird outcome... I took the monitor back and exchanged it for a better model, better brand. The thunderbolt to hdmi cable works fine with this new monitor in osx. Thanks again..

My guess maybe that when you connect via the DVI port on the Asus, the Mac mini is correctly detecting the resolutin and setting it self to match. However when connecting via HDMI it is not chosing the same (best) resolutuon. Can you do the following to help diagnose this.
On the Mac open System Preferences
    Select Displays
Make sure show in menu bar is enabled (ticked)
Now go to the Displays menu in the menu bar it should show the current resolution
Repeat step 4 for both the DVI and HDMI connections, we want to see if they are the same or different.

Can I use the optical digital audio cable to connect INSTEAD of the hdmi?  My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, and they're both taken

I'm afraid that's very misleading and inaccurate.
Firstly an adapter won't work, it would need to be a converter and then if it's a compliant converter it won't let you watch HDCP protected content such as that from netflix or from the iTunes Store.
Secondly, whilst I'm not going to debate whether component or HDMI is better, component is certainly not better if it's been converted from an HDMI signal. You can't make anything better by simply converting it to another type of signal.

  • Aperture 3 and HDV Camcorder

I've been messing around with Aperture 3 for a while now and decided it was time to try playing with the new HD video support.
On Apple's Aperture "New Features" page http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/#video it states:
    "Video Support
Import, browse, and play back video clips — including HD video — from digital SLR cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, and +digital camcorders+."
Well, I plugged in my Sony HDV camcorder with it's Firewire cable and expected it to open right up in import. Nope, nada. Couldn't find any way for the camcorder to show up in Aperture. (This same camera and MacBook Pro work fine to import with Final Cut Pro.)
Then I tried to import the .MOV video files into Aperture that I used Final Cut to capture. This sort of worked. Aperture did recognize and import them, but two things were seriously messed up. When Final Cut captures video from an HDV camcorder, it leaves it in the interlaced 1440x1080 amorphous pixel aspect ratio how it comes off the camera. When those clips are played back in Final Cut (or in Quicktime X) it somehow deinterlaces and displays the video in normal 1920x1080 so it looks good on the screen. Aperture 3 doesn't seem to do this. Once imported, the clips looked like crap when played back in Aperture.
I found on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4025 a very short list of DSLR cameras that Apple says Aperture supports, none of which are digital camcorders. How does Apple get away with claiming Aperture 3 supports HD video from "digital camcorders" when it doesn't have one listed on their supported list and Aperture doesn't even do a very good job of working with HD video files captured from another application?
I've Googled around on this forum, the Aperture manual, and Apple's site and haven't found any other mention of Aperture working with HDV camcorders.
Does anyone here have any better experiences?

A quick look at the contents pages in the Aperture 3 PDF manual seems not to mention camcorders.
Page 145 of the manual states-
Aperture supports most image, audio, and video file formats captured by digital cameras. An example of the file types and formats that can be imported into your Aperture library are:
    • GIF • JPEG • JPEG2000 • PNG • PSD(8-and16-bit) • DNG • RAW files from a variety of supported digitalcameras • TIFF (8- and 16-bit) • AIF • WAV • MOV
So digital camcorders recording in ACVHD are not stated as compatible with Aperture so need to have their movies converted to the supported formats first.
