Connecting iMac 24" to Stereo System

I've just ordered a 24" iMac 3.06 Ghz machine. I would like to use the optical interface to connect to a stereo system (hopefully with 5:1 surround sound support). Can I do this? What currently sold brands and models of receivers allow this? Will I have to buy the optical cable separately?
I have also purchased the 24" Cinema Display for dual head computing. I know it has its own sound options. But my Infinity speakers are likely to be better (plus I have a Velodyne sub)
I do have a rather old Sony STR-G3. I do not know if it supports the right connection type.
Thank you.

Hornet Developer,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new iMac. You should be able to successfully connect your iMac to a hi-fi system and get 5.1 sound on at least iTunes material. This is assuming of course the content in iTunes was recorded in 5.1. In fact if you have an Airport Express you can even do it wirelessly, using Apples Air Tunes feature.
This will work with any receiver that supports optical input, there are even some powered speakers available so this would work with them as well.
Yes you do need to purchase a separate cable however they are relatively inexpensive. An example would be something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Optical-TOSLink-to-Mini-AUDIO-Cable-6ft-for-Apple-MacW0QQitemZ230378402121QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a39f7149&_ trksid=p4999.c0.m14#ht_1400wt1170
Assuming your Sony STR-G3 supports optical in and it's functioning OK you should only need a cable to connect your iMac and you're good to go. If you want to do this wirelessly you would need to get a cable and the Airport Express which would connect to your wireless network. I do this myself with my Imac, my wireless router is the Airport Extreme and I have a Airport Express connected to a B&K Reference 50 Pre-Pro which is connected (via my separate amp) to my B&W Nautilus speakers.

  • Connecting nano to speakers/stereo system

Can anyone give me some info on connecting my nano 2GB to a sony cd player? I would love to listen to music without headphones or a computer? Thanks

You buy a three dollar cable with a headphone minijack on one end, RCA on the other, and plug into the AUX inputs on your amplifier. Easy as can be.

  • Connecting iMac or PC to stereo amplifier

I wonder if there's a best way to connect our iMAc to the stereo system in the same room. It's an old receiver with CD, Video, Phono jacks in the back.

For an older receiver with only analog inputs - a 3.5mm-to-stereo-RCA cable

  • IMac-stereo system wireless connection?

Suggestions wanted, please, for wireless connection of IMac with Airport Extreme card and/or Bluetooth to older stereo system in other room to play ITunes/Internet-accessed radio stations.

Do you know whether it can be used simultaneously with other tasks, such as printing wirelessly via Airport and browsing? I could never print without switching off Internet access in order to connect to my printer.
Yes, the AX can be configured in several ways, including a remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). In a WDS, the AX would both extend your current AEBSn's wireless network and provide a means to stream iTunes and/or share a USB printer concurrently.
Where is a good guide to all these connectivity issues?
There are several good ones at the following link: Apple Manuals

  • Connect Imac to Stereo via Headphone Jack & 2nd Stereo via Airport Express

I have two whole-house stereo systems; one serving the lower level (basement) of my house and another serving the first and second floors. My iMac is on the lower level. The house was prewired with two coax cables (standard cable TV-type cables) from the area behind my stereo on the lower level to the room where my iMac is located. Using adapters from Radio Shack, I was able to directly connect my iMac to my home stereo on the lower level. I can currently play my iTunes on my lower level stereo by plugging the cable into the headphone jack on my iMac.
I am set up with a wireless network using a Linksys WRT54G. I would like to be able to also stream music from iTunes on my iMac to my home stereo on the first floor. I realize I can do this with the use of Airport Express.
My goal is to be able to play the same music from iTunes on my iMac on both stereos simultaneously. My question is; if I have my lower level stereo connected to my iMac via the headphone jack, will I still be able to stream the same music from iTunes to my upper level stereo via Airport Express? I'm concerned that by connecting the lower level stereo to the headphone jack, the music will not be able to be streamed wirelessly to the upper level stereo.
Thank you in advance for your time.

    Hi.
Assuming your iMac is no more than 50 feet from where you intend to locate the express then:
You will need to configure your airport express to join your current wireless network in client mode (otherwise you won't be able to use the internet and the express at the same time).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302153
In iTunes there is an option to select multiple speakers. Thus you select this and then check the desired options. Hence you can have music coming out of the speakers/hadphone jack on your iMac AND out of the speakers connected to the airport express.

  • Connecting my home stereo system to my macbook pro

I want to connect my stereo system to my MacBook Pro in order to put some of my Pops old vinyl onto CD to play when out and about. Please can someone advise best option. Usual stereo phono out from the amp.
    Thanks

Well, there are many options you can use. If you have a home stereo, with only two channels, you can go to radio shack and get a splitter cable, one with the red and black/white RCA connectors on one end, and then the 1/8th inch headphone connector on the other end, and then plug the RCA's into you stereo in the line out ports, and then the headphone into the line in on the MBP, and you are all set. You can even go into system prefs and sound under line in or recording, play the record and see what the MBP is registering for line in volume and adjust it to get the best sound.

  • Why lower audo levels when connecting to home stereo system

I have connected an audio cable to the earphone output on the Nano. This cable has two RCA connectors that connect to the line-in of my home stereo system. It works fine except for one thing. The volume is lower than other sources that feed into a "line-in" input. To make things even across the system, is there some type of devise that will increase the output level of the headphone jack on the Nano? Or does using an Apple cable make any difference. I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output.
    Thanks for suggestions.

"I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output."
It is, which is why many people who want to do this use the iPod dock, which has a proper 'line out' socket.

  • Connecting iMac to stereo receiver

I am trying to figure out the best way to connect my iMac to a stereo receiver. Which option will result in superior sound on my home stereo: (1) running a TOSLINK cable from the iMac's optical digital audio out port to the receiver's optical input or (2) connecting the iMac to the receiver using a USB DAC?
    Thanks for your help.

I do not agree. The headphone amp outputs a conventional two channel analog signal on the multi-purpose 3.5 mm audio output jack on all Intel iMacs. But that same jack outputs a digital optical signal if the iMac senses a mini-Toslink adaptor plug has been inserted instead of an analog stereo TRS (tip ring sleeve) plug.
IOW, the same jack furnishes two entirely different kinds of output (analog or digital) depending on what is plugged into it. The digital output encodes the audio (which could consist of multiple channels of audio) on a single beam of digitally modulated light. The analog output is two separate signals, each on its own electrical conductor, derived from the internal DAC in the iMac & amplified by the amp to provide enough power to drive headphones.
It is possible that the amp does double duty to also drive the light source for the digital output, but that is in no way is comparable to using it to drive headphones -- for the digital output all it would have to do is switch the light level between the digital high & low states.
My guess is that whoever told you about the headphone amp either did not know about the dual function of the jack or thought you were talking about an analog connection to your stereo.

  • Stereo system and viera cast connection

i have a 50" viera cast plasma tv a panasonic blue ray
I want to listen to to pandora an netflix through the sound system. I can listenb to tv and blu ray through it but when I get netflix or pandora it does not play through the audio system.
the cat 5 cable is hooked through the TV Tv is hooked to blue ray through hdmi and tv to cable box via hdmi
i have fiberoptic cable from the blue ray to stereo and stereo to TV
do i need a fiber audio cable from TV to stereo as well?

A fiberoptic cable should be connected from the TV to a input of the stereo. I am just not really sure aobut your comment:
"i have fiberoptic cable from the blue ray to stereo and stereo to TV"
I undesrtand you have a fiber cable from BD to your stereo. But the other part are you saying you are using stereo RCA connections to the TV? because if you already have a fiber optic cable connecting your TV to stereo it should be working
