Connecting iMac to cellular 3G network

I live in the sticks...very RURAL...No cable or Broadband available, only Dial-Up for internet connection....
...Is it possible to connect my iMac with my AT&T cellular 3G iPhone account.
I have a cellular signal booster which provides me with a very strong 3G connection on my iPhone (always have 5 bars)...and would like to extend this to my desktop for internet connection...my data plan is unlimited, so this makes pretty good sense if the technology is relatively simple...

If possible, configure your router to use WPA2 or WPA instead of WEP. This will improve your security tremendously.
I'm guessing that the new network has the same name as the old unprotected network. Open the application Keychain Access and delete the item with the name of your network. This will remove the old entry which had no password. Now when you go to the AirPort menu and select the network name you should be prompted to enter the password.
If that doesn't work and your new network has the same name as the old network, try renaming the new network.

  • Solution for Connecting iMac to Uverse Wireless Network?

Hi. I would like to upgrade my 2003-vintage iMac flatscreen (that is now my secondary computer) so that I can connect to my Uverse network at home. I am considering using a USB adapter such as the one in this link:
    http://afterthemac.com/product.php?id=802.11nApple_Wireless_USBAdapter
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of solution? I would prefer to do this instead of installing an AirPort card. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

As a group, the USB wireless adaptors have received mixed reviews, but largely because someone buys one that lacks Mac driver support. That seems to be covered in the model you've linked.
That leaves my only concern the statement:
...with optional-use Adapter Vertical Base Stand and 1 meter travel cable (two cables!) for up to 80% Increase in Signal Range
The bit about "two cables" makes me nervous. It's not clear if the adaptor takes up TWO of your USB ports. If you lost ports, that could be a problem. Also, bus-powered devices may not work from your keyboard ports. You may need to clarify what ports are recommended and whether the device has (or needs) a separate power supply.
I suspect a call to the vendor would sort this out.

  • Connecting iMac to an existing network using AirPort Extreme

Ok, I've just switched to Macs having used PCs for years. I have an Intel iMac with a built in AirPort card but cannot connect to my wireless network. AirPort can detect that the network is there, I have the 20something didgit 128-bit Hex WEP code and all the other computers on the network (3 PCs) are fine, but I cannot connect to it at all. Since Apple's helpline is closed at the exact time I need to call it I thought this would be the best place to ask. Am I missing a glaringly obvious n00b step? How can I sort this problem out?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for that Duane, I've actually read that article already, I've followed the steps and something still isn't right. Allow me to elaborate, I already have a Netgear router set up for the wireless network which has an exisitng WEP password and right now I'm connected to it on my old Vaio laptop and have another Vaio connected to the network with no problems but my brand new iMac won't connect. The router has a hardware firewall built in to it, is that likely to cause any problems?

  • My iPad mini can no longer connect to verizon cellular data network.

My ipad mini no longer communicates with the Verizon network,I can see the signal strength is good but no connection, yes I have paid the bill it shows I have plenty of data usage left. I called Verizon to see if there were network issues in my area, but there is not. They opened a trouble ticket for tech support to track,I have not heard back after 3 days. It has worked great for about a year now, just wondering if others have experinced this. I purchsed from a major retailer with a 2 year warranty extention so I have a year left for service/replacement,fortunately.

Not sure but you might have tried this but it wasn't specifically mentioned.
Turn off Wi-Fi. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. You should or might see No Service in the upper left corner of the iPad. Wait a little while to see if that changes. If it turns to the signal strength indicator then attempt to connect to the internet to see if your data works. If it does you can turn Wi-Fi back on.
You might consider having your iPad examined by a technician. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Trying to connect IMac to Lion server (network account)

    Hello,
I have been trying to get this to work for a few weeks now.  I have 2 Imacs and a Macbook, i am trying to login to a network account.  I did the step by step to set up my server.  I can screen share and see all the shared folders.  I have a network user in the work group, and when i go to users on my macbook, and say join the server, i get host not found, but the server is active.
My network is a DSL modem ( in bridge mode), then to a time capsule, that is hard wired to my server and one Imac, everthing else is wireless.  My time capsule hands out the Ip's, and a DNS server is running on my lion server.
Am I having a DNS problem, I am not sure what DNS has to go where starting with the time capsule.  Should i have my time capsule just server one IP to my lion server and have the server hand out the other IP's over DHCP?
My goal is to have network user account on my server, and no matter what computer you use, you can get the same information.  Then set up mobile account for when my macbook is not on the network.
I setup profile manager, and tried to push my settings to my account, but it also fails every time.
I tried to follow apple's doc's on this but I have luck with some things, and now with others.
I am running lion server on a mac mini server.
    Thank you,
         Justin

    HI,
    my experience is as follows:
    1. You have to setup a home folder for network/mobile users with Server.app
    2. Create a group for network users with the workgroupmanagement.app from serveradmin tools
    3. Create users with  correct settings under "preferences" in workgroupmanagement.app, especially "rules"
    4. Put the users in the group
    4. Set the appropriate permissions to the home folder and share it over the network with server.app
After playing around I could login from a MacBook Pro and synchronize the users library and complete home folder. After testing and restarting the machines (Lion Server is on a Mac Mini) I could relogin with the network/mobile user.
My problem actually is, that I could not login from any other Mac. Everytime the system told me, that there is a fault with login.
Before I want to login with the network/moblle user on another MacBook i logout the user form the MacBook Pro.
    No luck :-(
I test it with other users with same settings.
    No luck :-(
I integrate the MacBooks in the Computer settings in the workgroupmanagement.app.
    No luck :-(
I hope this thread give answers the next days, because I need a working synchronize and account management solution for different users and machines :-)
    Cheers
    Ishan

  • How to connect my iMac G4 to my network, it wont let me something about the password but I connect to a open network???Ask your question.

Hello I have been trying to connect my iMac G4 to my network but I can't. I have a secure network with a password and is not let me in but I can connect to an open network with no password??? anybody can help???

AirPort card in iMac G4 does not support strong WiFi encryption.
I think WPA is the maximum for that WiFi card.
If you have WPA2 in your WiFi network, you need to downgrade (not recommended)or wired connect the iMac G4.

  • Why has my ipad lost connectivity to the AT&T cellular data network after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2?  My iPad is model #MD367LL/A, 32 GB WIFI + Cellular, about 2-1/2 years old.

Why has my ipad lost connectivity to the AT&T cellular data network after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2?  My iPad is model #MD367LL/A, 32 GB WIFI + Cellular, about 2-1/2 years old. It;s been working perfectly up until now.  I have no problem on my home WIFI, or through personal hotspot working through my iPhone 5.
I have worked with AT&T, replaced the SIM card with a new one, and done a backup/restore to factory settings, all with the same result that when I turn Cellular
Data on, with or without Enable LTE, it goes into "searching" mode, or reports "no service".  My iPhone 5 works perfectly on iOS 8.1.2, on Cellular.  I've browsed the blogs and have tried Apple's suggested fix, all to no result.
Oddly enough, every once in a while I do get connected to the network for a short ime (minutes), but it always returns to "searching".
I've filed a report with Apple, along with a request that they contact me, but no results yet.
    Help? (and thank you).

Hello razmee209.  Thank you for your response.  I spent the better part of yesterday working with Apple Support.  They tried their best, to include backing up photos to my HP laptop, backing up the iPad to iCloud, then resetting the iPad in total.  Same problem.  I restored from the cloud to recover my apps, same problem.
AT&T installed a new sim card - same problem.  I spent time with AT&T Support yesterday, too.  In both cases, (Apple and AT&T) the support techs who worked with me were extremely polite, courteous and helpful to the best of their abilities, but I think the problem lies deeper, and nobody at Apple is admitting they have a problem with iOS 8, that I'm aware of.
I didn't have this issue before I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.
Everything else with the iPad works fine:  WIFI, Personal Hotspot, email, all my apps, etc.
In browsing the web for this issue I see that many other folks have the same problem.  I filed a report with Apple this morning, requesting that they contact me, but no word yet.  I was going to go to iPhone 6, and had been considering the iPad Air 2, but I see reports of this problem with those units as well.
At this point I don't think I'll be spending any more money with Apple, at least not till this issue is resolved.
Thanks again for your response and suggestions.

  • When I connect imac to network via airport all devices on the network lose internet connectivity

Every device stays connected to the network but the internet stops working. Usually the network will continue to function normally for about five minutes when the imac connects, but then every device loses internet access via the network, NOT just the imac. As soon as I turn off the imac's airport they get internet connectivity back. A wired network connection to the imac seems to work OK.
The airport is configured as "Using DHCP"
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
As far as I know, no changes have been made to the computer recently (but it is not my machine and the owner isn't here atm)
I found one other resource with the same problem here:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/internet-networking-wireless/183185-turning-my- macbook-airport-breaks-internet-connection-entire-network.html
but the solution didn't work. When I deleted the three files mentioned in the solution in that thread, my problem is not solved.
If you have any ideas or need more information I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks guys.

Yes it is possible that the two machines are creating a Computer-to-Computer network and are not going through the Express.
To delete the Alias you may need to login with the Admin User.

I updated my new iPad to the iOS 6 while connected to wifi. However, it will no longer connect to the 3G network. I keep getting the message "could not activate cellular data network" even though the 3G symbol appears normal. I have tried rebooting, but it still doesn't work. Please help!

    No. You can't

  • My iPhone 4s will not connect with my home WiFi network. I have ios6 on my phone. I have updated my IMac and my MacBook Pro with iOS 10.8.2. Anyone have any suggestions? It was connecting with no problems prior to updating my two computers.

My iPhone 4s will not connect with my home WiFi network. I have ios6 on my iPhone. The connection was working perfectly before I updated my IMac and my MacBook Pro to ios 10.8.2. I have had ios6 since I purchased the phone a couple of months ago. It searches for a network and finds them, but when it asks for my password, it will not accept the password. Have never had this happen before.

    Hello krosebear,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are having difficulties connecting your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network, the following article should provide troubleshooting that should help you resolve the issue.

  • IPHONE 5: can't receive calls & random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational.

IPHONE 5:  can't receive calls and random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational, and it does not matter whether wifi is on or off.  ATT went through the standard protocol - resetting network, resetting sim card, etc.  No changes.  Other phones working fine in same region with same carrier.  Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet.  Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

    Hi,
To connect, I need to 'configure encryption as AES', which I'm not sure how to do on OS X. Furthermore, after signing in with my college ID I am required to 'Use the domain name [domain name]' and 'configure your browser to use the college proxy servers [example.example.net] on port [123]
The encryption should be configured automatically. To use the proxy:
    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Click on Network
    3. Select Airport from the list on the left
    4. Click on Advanced, near the bottom right
    5. One of the tabs will be called Proxy. Configure your settings there.
