Connecting iPhone through USB hub

I have a weird problem. When I connect the iPhone through a USB hub, nothing happens. It doesn't synchronize, it doesn't charge. When I connect the iPhone directly to the computer, with the same cable, it works as supposed.
The weird thing is, I have been connecting the iPhone successfully through this (powered) hub for half a year. But suddenly it doesn't work. Everything else connected through the hub works fine.

You're going to want a USB hub that comes with an AC adapter: the iPhone will draw as much power from the port as it reasonably can, and prefers up to 1 A (USB spec is 500 mA) at 12 V to charge as quick as possible. This tends to lead to undervolt situations on the bus when other devices suddenly draw more (a mouse wakes up, a HD spins up, et cetera).
I use my iPhone 3G with a dock on a USB hub that's powered, and have had minimal issues. This isn't an endorsement, just FYI.

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

i updated itunes 11.1 yesterday and now im trying to get my music on itunes to sync onto my iphone 4s but when i connect it through usb...Itunes is saying " waiting for changes to be applied"? so i dont know what to do cause i just want to sync my music from itunes to my iphone 4s

I had the same problem and the fix was so easy that I felt a little silly after spending 2 hours with an Apple Technician.  At the end of it all, what I had to do was make sure ALL music was deleted from my iPhone 5 by going into usage and clearing out the music folder.  All I had to do then was turn my phone off and turn it back on again.  I had not done this after my phone upgraded to the new 7.0 IOS.   What's the first thing you do when experiencing computer problems?  Reboot!   It fixed my problem and now my iPhone 5 synchs perfectly when I had it connected to my computer.  I am also on iTunes version 11.1.

  • Tip connection using a usb hub

    Hi,
I am trying to set up a tip connection using a usb hub.
I have the following in my /etc/remote file:
    hardwire:\
    :dv=/dev/term/0:br#9600:el=^C^S^Q^U^D:ie=%$:oe=^D:
I am getting the message "link down" when I issue the tip command.
    any help would be appreciated.

Hmm, "tip" works with serial lines, and an "usb hub" is a device on an usb bus. There's a device missing
in your setup, an "usb serial port" device.
Another question: Where is the usb hub and usb serial port device connected? To an USB port on a PC?
Or an USB port on the Sun?

  • Flash drive only mounts when connected through USB hub

I have a PNY 32gb USB 2.0 flash drive, when trying to connect the drive directly to my Mid 2012 MBP (specs attached) the drive never mounts, doesn't list in diskutil as an unmounted drive either, however when I plug the drive into a Micro Innovations USB Hub (old ~ 2002) the drive mounts (albeit slowly).
On my iMac (Mid 2010 I7) the drive works perfectly in the machine or through Apple USB Keyboard.
    Any help?

Is that the only USB drive that doesn't work with your MBP ?
    Everything else works fine?

  • External Hard Drive will not mount through USB Hub.

The Hard Drives are ok. If I plug them directly into my iMac (3 weeks old and update to 10.7.1) they mount fine. But they wont show up if I plug them into my USB Hub that is plugged into my iMac. I have had THREE USB Hubs and all of them have had problems. I have USB flash drive that sometimes shows up and a iPhone that will show up in iTunes when I mount it through the hub.
Is there a program (in the system or share/freeware) that will force the Mac to scan and mount them?
    thanks - Otto.

The issue is the EHD's are not getting enough power. Going forward never buy EHD's unless they have their own power supply. I would recommend either connecting directly to the iMac or replacing them with higher quality devices. The EHD's I like to recommend are:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
All are similar in quality and features. Yes they're probably more money that what you paid however they're worth it. I use the LaCie's however I wouldn't hesitate to use the OWC or G-Tech's either.

  • Time capsule doesn't see printer through USB hub

I can't seem to get the TC to see my USB printer if it connects through a hub.  I have an external drive plugged into the hub and I can plug it into any of the ports and the TC log file shows the disk plug in and unplug.  The disk works great.
So far, the only way I've been able to print via the TC, is to connect the USB cable direct to the TC.  But there's no indication in the AirPort utility that the printer even exists.  Using System Preferences printer setup, I'm able to see the printer, add it and print a test page.  At no time did the AirPort utility indicate that the printer was indeed attached to the Time Capsule and functioning correctly.
How do I get the AirPort to give me more log information?  I can't believe that I'm able to print via the TC, yet the printers pane is empty, and nothing in the system log.
After doing this test, I again tried using the hub, and the printer is no longer visible on the Mac, but the disk on the hub is there.  I unplug the hub and plug the printer direct, and it's again visible on the Mac.  At no time does the TC indicate that the printer exists.
I do Linux system admin all day and bought a mac because it runs Unix for command line, and is supposed to be a "no brainer" to manage - a big plus as I really don't want to bring my work home and just use the computer.  Sigh....
    Macbook is running 10.7.2
Time Capsule is a new 2T unit
    Printer is Canon iP4300

The thing that really bothers me is that when I connect the printer direct to the TC, the Mac sees it, but not the Time Capsule...  ***?!?
Resetting the print system may...or may not....help here.

You are power cycling the entire network after you make a change in the USB connections, correct?
A powered USB hub will run $15-20 or so. Highly recommended.

  • Cdrom audio permissions in udev through USB hub

Connection of the HDD via USB adapter through a USB 4-port hub , then to the computer USB connector does not permit hdparm to recognize the HDD.
Connection of the USB adapter directly to the computer USB connector permits hdparm to recognize the drive
Command hdparm -tT /dev/sdb produces correct output with the USB adapter connected to the computer USB connector.
What command should be used ,if any, when the USB 4 port hub is included in the interface?
The effects of the hub would then be determined.....

My setup is a bit different.
I have the hub connected to the comp USB.  The USB audio adapter is outputted from the hub.  In addition, a USB to IDE powered adapter is outputted.
The USB adapter feeds IDE output to an IDE cable with 5 devices connected.  Each of the 5 devices has power connected to them via "Y" cables modified to permit 5Volt line to be switched to select the IDE device to be powered "on".
I have 3 HDD and a cdr/w/dvdrom connected to the IDE cable.
The selection in the computer is established by fstab, using the same device:
    /dev/sdc1 /mnt/dvd-ext udf  ro,users,noauto,unhide 0  0
    /dev/scd1 /mnt/dvd-ext iso9660 rw,users,noauto,unhide 0  0
    /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom-ext iso9660 rw,users,noauto,unhide 0  0
    /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom-ext iso9660 ro,users,noauto,unhide 0  0
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 ntfs defaults 0  0
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 vfat defaults 0  0
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb3 ext3 defaults 0  0
I have been able to burn a CD via K3b with this arrangement.
This setup allows only one device to run or none(with adapter power off).
I was having trouble with ID's which has been better organized now.
The USB adapter shares bandwidth with the USB audio.
The 12Volt line is connected to all devices on the IDE 5 device cable, and the 5v is selected by a switch.
In operation, turn off adapter power, select device, turn adapter power on.
Computer recognizes the device...with the roms, insertion of a disc starts the computer recognition.
I apologize for my stumbling over this interface which was new since the new 2.6.15 upgrade.
I also have selectable HDD's in primary IDE with selection made before boot by single pin connector interface.  No bios call needed.
Thus, only one HDD running inside the case, less heat and power dissipation.  I expect I could install four or five on an 80 strand IDE cable, enabling booting on alternate OS'es without using dual booting ,( which if one makes a mistake loses  all partitions).   I do make mistakes!
Hope you can appreciate my arrangement which attempts to reduce power needs and lower case temps.  Not an automated selection process but a power saving setup.
Have to find a case for the devices, now!
    Many thanks for your responses

  • Syncing Iphone Over USB Hub

I'm having no luck connecting my Iphone to Itunes using my powered Belkin USB hub, so I'm unable to sync and I'm unable to upgrade to 3.0.
I'm working on a MacBook Air and am using vs. 2.2.1 of the Iphone software.
I require a USB hub because the Air has only one USB port and I keep all my itunes songs and aperture photos on a external (powered) USB hard drive. Both the external drive and my Iphone must plug into the USB hub.
Here's what happens... I open itunes... all my songs show up and play successfully. But when I plug in my Iphone, all I get is a twirling beach ball (in Itunes). ARGH!
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I don't think it will work on a non powered hub. Is it powered? you may need to connect to Air directly.
    Good Luck

  • IPhone and USB hub ....

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my iPhone does not show up when connected to my USB 2.0 hub ??? If connected to my iMac it shows up ...

Apple usually prevents problems that simple. My computer's 3 USP ports are already crowded ... Plugging my iPhone to my iMac is a plug/unplug situation.
So plug your other devices into the hub and reserve one dedicated USB port for the iPhone.
I would have also thought Apple would have implemented a feature that exists already in most of cell phones, a wireless connection to sync with the computer. No wireless and no USB hub connection.
The iPhone is not most cell phones. It is a unique piece with unique features. If it did everything that other cells did the same way there would be no need for it.
If I add to that the absence of a search feature in iCal and Address Book, the fact that they are no notes already implemeted, I would say they are letting go features bit by bit. Design is good and can get iPhone sold, but we usually think of Apple more like a genial feature driven architect.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.htm.
Narrowing us to use only one cellular company to get a share of our ATT's (or other cell phone companies) monthly cell fees is the biggest insult to the Apple community. In business we call this a «kick back» and it is normally badly perceived. You sell your product a decent price and with honest and upfront conditions and customers will respect and be loyal. I really don't appreciate this move from Apple and me and my family are loyal users since 1984. Considering asiatic markets are potential buyers and can give Apple big profits, Apple can afford to offer a unlocked iPhone to the world.
Its not uncommon for a cell to be locked to a carrier upon initial release. In addition to this, there are a few features on the iPhone (Visual Voicemail) that required the carriers to upgrade their current systems. This could not have been offered with an unlocked release.

  • Shutdown when I connect iPhone to USB

My computer is automatically shutting sown when I connect my iPhone to USB. This has only just happened in the past few days out of the blue. I did get an error message last week that said somthing along the lines of "the device connected to the USB is draining too much power....". Any clues? Thanks

Try the other usb port. Sounds like a problem with the port. Take it to an Apple store or AASP>

  • Suncing through USB hub "upgraded" after 3.1.2????

    Hi all!
Before upgrading to 3.1.2, my phone would charge on my non-powered usb hub but would NOT sync. After 3.1.2 it also syncs!!!
Is this a fluke, or did Apple fix something?
Has anyone else noticed similar behavior?
    M.

This is a discussions forum for users, Apple do not read all the posts.
The choppy scrolling was happening prior to 3.1.3 and I have used Feedback to inform Apple about it. However, until others also use Feedback, Apple will think I'm the only one with the problem and perhaps think I'm just being fussy. So please, all three of you, use http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html to let them know.

  • Sending ASCII commands through USB hub

I am having issues connecting to hardware. I have 3 types of hardware connected to a Serial to USB converter hub. 2 of the hardware take ASCII commands while the other does not. I am able to communicate with the hardware individually without the hub but when I connect the hardware to the hub and the hub to my computer, it does not work. I do not think MAX sees the hardware connected. Any ideas?
    CLD Certified 2014

When you say "hub", are you talking about a product like the QUATECH USB to serial adapter (4 ports)?
If so, then each port has its own serial port assigned to it.  You should be able to communicate through it using a terminal emulator, such as HyperTerm, TerraTerm, ProCOMM, etc.
You do have to install the driver for the box and you can also configure the starting COM port number.  For instance, Port A on my box is COM-3.
You can open multiple ports in parallel, as long as you select different COM port numbers.
MAX should see the serial ports.

  • Why cannot control iPhone through USB in Honda or Yamaha

My wife and I have two iPhone 5s and two iPads at 8.1.3 that can no longer be controlled when plugged into usb devices such as my 2014 Honda Odyssey and my Yamaha receiver.  The song titles appear and I can scroll but will not play the music after clicking using the Honda or Yamaha controller.  Only way to play music is through the iphone/ipad.  Everything worked fine up until iOS 8.  Obviously a pain and safety issue if I can't select songs from my vehicle system and have to resort to looking at the iPhone instead.

Check to see if there is a software update for the Honda. I just got a software update the other day for my Hyundai, although it was working just fine with my phone. I've read of other problems with Honda and the iPhones. It seems what I remember on a couple of threads is they were working on updates. You can search here to see if you can find anything on the threads, but they also seemed to be geared more towards Bluetooth.
