Connecting iPod freezes iTunes + Firefox

Problem started this morning. every time i connect my ipod, my itunes freezes immediately as does my firefox. if i leave my ipod plugged in for more than a minute, my computer crashes and restarts.
I've tried reformatting my ipod, uninstalling itunes, reinstalling itunes, restarting my ipod; just about everything i can think of. i plugged in my newer ipod shuffle and my computer recognizes it immediately and i'm able to sync music.
I would appreciate any help, so that i might use my ipod instead of wanting to throw it in the oven.

When I connect my iPod, first the computer has the camera/data thing pop-up, but after, iTunes doesn't reconize there is an iPod and then when I manually click "sync (iPod name)" iTunes freezes up. What is wrong? I've ran the diagnostic tests and it says everything is working. What can be done?

  • Connect Ipod to Itunes Message

My ipod's battery died on me while I was on vacation about 3 days ago. At the time I had no means of charging it, but when I returned home I attempted to charge it on my PS3 (I have done this many times and it usually works fine). When I turned my ipod on it displayed the 'connect ipod to itunes' message (a usb plug with an arrow pointing at the itunes symbol). However, I can't connect my ipod to itunes because it is locked. I can't enter my passcode on my ipod because it is frozen on the 'connect ipod to itunes' screen. This has happened to me once before but I didn't have a passcode for my ipod at the time, so I was able to access it on itunes and fix whatever was wrong. Any suggestions?

you need to force recovery mode on the ipod and then restore it.
that screen means the ipod found something wrong with itself and you need to restore anyways
when the ipod is not connected to the computer, hold down the sleep/wake button and slide to power off.
once the ipod is off, hold down the home button and do not let it go!
plug the ipod into the computer and open itunes. you should get a message stating itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode.
once you see that let go of the home button, click ok on the message then click restore in itunes.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • IPod freezes iTunes, content on ipod disappeared, how to restore?

I synced my 120gb ipod classic today (newest itunes, windows 7) and i might have pulled out the cable too quickly or something, because now my itunes says "no music" and "no movies", even though it only has 389mb free, so all my data is on there but it wont recognize it. So i tried syncing it again, but when i plugged it in itunes froze and the ipod did not appear in itunes. It does recognize it, but freezes. I tried going to my computer and it shows up. when trying to access it, explorer freezes too. i disconnected and tried explorer one more time and was able to access the folder, but it was very slow.
I am able to right click it in "my computer" and choose format. Is this safe or is there another way? i dont even want to try to reinstall itunes incase i lose all my ratings and all that stuff (15000 songs) and i dont think itunes is the problem.
When i disconnect my ipod, itunes starts responding again at once, and it shows the ipod sync screen showing that 111gb is used but all in the "OTHER" category. It says it cant sync because the necessary/required folder was not found.
I've tried different usb ports, disk mode and another vista pc but it freezes itunes there too...
And if i should format in my computer what settings to choose (exFAT, 256kb, quick format etc all that stuff)?
I'm going on vacation soon and i need it:s:S

UPDATE: i think i know what caused it: i synced my ipod touch today before i did the classic. The touch (2g, 16gb) synced fine, but when i connected the classic it froze. I had not synced the touch for months so that has to be what caused it. Any ideas what to do? How to format without itunes?

  • Ipod freezing itunes, the last problem in a long list

So ill start from the beginning with the problems ive had with my ipod...
The first problem i had started maybe 6 months ago. My ipod would just stop playing when it played certain songs. Everything else worked fine, it would just stop sometimes. Then in the last few months it stopped being able to connected to a computer. Whenever i would hook it up it would just automatically eject itself. I tried hooking it up to a freinds computer and for some reason when it was hooked up to his computer it worked fine. I decided to just do a restore at the point hoping to end all my problems. The restore went fine. I started putting music back on it and i started getting error messages. The computer said that my ipod was missing the file that would allow me to sync with the computer or something like that. I tried to restore it again and it didnt change anything. In the last couple days i tried to put music on the ipod again and now it wont show at all in itunes. The ipod says its connected but when plugged in itunes just freezes.
I dont know if it makes any difference but my computer is a mac, and the computer i was able to do the restore on runs vista.
Im totally out of ideas and im not sure what my options are from here. Any and all help would be awesome.
    Thanks in advance everybody!

I get exactly what your describing and I noticed we are using the same laptop!!
I did not notice originally as I've got an old 40gb click wheel, about 3/4 years old. The battery is not great so assumed it may have been that but even fully charged I'm getting no luck.
I also followed the 5 r's and all the other suggestions for Ipod in My compute but not in itunes but nothing has worked. I cannot get my laptop to recognised my ipod via Itunes but it see's it fine via My Computer.
Both the Ipod and Itunes work fine without each other, Ipod plays songs fine etc and Itunes downloads music from cd etc and still performs all the usual functions but nothing else works.
I'm desperate for help as I run every day and buy a new cd each week and at this rate I'm going to have to dig out my old CD player!
Also just a point of note I looked the price to get my Ipod serviced as I figured this may help but the price quoted from apple was £160+...you can get a new 30gb for less...talk about customer explotation!!

  • IPOD Freezes Itunes and Memory is full of "Other"

I have an 80g Ipod classic and i recently updated my itunes to version 10.6.1 (7).  After my latest sync, my ipod now has no music but 1/2 the memory is full with "other".  I have reset my ipod several times but the music fails to appear.  I cannot restore my Ipod because when I connect it to itunes, the program freezes up.  The application stops responding and I have to close Itunes all together.  All of my music is saved in my itunes library and I dont want to lose any of it.  Someone please help!!!
I also noticed that since the most recent itunes update I am having problems connecting to the itunes store.  It keeps saying check the internet connection and try again.  My internet works fine but for some reason itunes will not allow me to connect to the itunes store.  PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a similar problem with my 120gb classic, my ipod shows no music or any data but states that memory is full of other, I've tried everything I can think of, rebooting does nothing, connecting to pc freezes itunes and I am unable to access in disk mode either, it shows in my computer but just hangs when trying to access it, so a reformat or restore is not an option, diagnostics shows an error when checking harddrive with HDSMARTdata. I'm sorry to say that I have a feeling that our hard drives are buggered cos surely if you cant access it you can fix it. Very dissapointed with apples service as mine was an under warranty replacent which was resseting itself randomly exessively often, sometimes up to 6 times a day from when I received it, I sent it back within two days stating it had a fault only to have it sent back the next day being told its fine! It is obvious that apple have sent me a replacement ipod with a recycled hard drive which was obviously faulty from day one and now its given up the ghost, I very much regret not holding my ground and demanding a fully working replacement at the time as now I have to fork out for yet another ipod!

  • My video ipod freezes iTunes

I just got a MacPro with OS 10.4.8. I have iTunes 7.0.2. Every time I connect my video ipod to listen to music, it crashes after an hour or so. My clock on my computer freezes too, yet every other software is working fine. I force quit iTunes and nothing happens - it'll stay stuck until I restart my computer. This happens every time I try to listen to my music off the iPod. On another note, I can listen to music stored on my computer with iTunes with no problem. I had no problems before with my G4 with OS 10.3. What can be the problem?
MacPro, G4 and emac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   30 GB Video ipod

I've almost the same problem. Does your iPod seem to be crazy about the battery status?... Mine's, when I reset it, shows full battery, the very next minute, empty, and so on.
I think, it freezes iTunes and any other aplication wich is usign files stored in the iPod because the iPod Discharged.
    I hope someone can help.

i have had my ipod touch 3rd gen. for just a few months and its has worked just fine until now. when i connect my ipod my itunes freezes, but as soon as i unplug it itunes works again. then i plug it in again and it freezes again

  • Corrupt iPod freezes iTunes/computer so I can't restore it

I used the restore option a few months ago to get my iPod working again (normal, stuck-on-stupid issues) and it's been fine. Until yesterday - I was listening to some music and it suddenly started skipping through all the songs and then refused to play anything at all.
I plugged it into my computer and I got the whole ..."iPod is corrupted... you may need to restore..." message. When I tried to restore, it said resource could not be found.
SINCE THEN... my computer has stopped even recognizing the device. It freezes iTunes (and any other programs that may be running) every time I plug in my iPod.
I've spent all last evening and all day today trying the Apple support suggestions step-by-step - including uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it & forcing the iPod into Disk Mode - and combing the discussion lists, but none of the suggestions I've found have helped b/c I can't actually get it connected to the computer without freezing everything up.
(I have run virus scans, tried different USB ports, etc. No change. I even have had to resort to unplugging the stupid thing by hand b/c it stopped responding to the safe disk eject utility...)
Found a website that suggests opening up the iPod and putting a shim inside to force the hard drive to "read"... but I'm afraid to kill it completely. Can't afford to buy a new one (or spend a lot getting it repaired either).
If anyone can help, I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate it...
    Thanks!

First let me say I am NOT a pro but it sounds to me like your iPod's hard disk is ka-put. May I suggest next time you connect your ipod to your pc you let it sit like that for a while. I have found that if iTunes don't find what it expects to find it can spaz out for a while, so sometimes if you wait long enough (half an hour?) with it just sitting there you may get a more helpfull responce from iTunes. Also there is a key press combination on the iPod that will put your IPod into a diagnostic mode and offer a menu with a few options.
Sorry but I don't recall the keys and they differ from pod to pod.
Anyways good luck, I feel for ya...

  • Ipod freezes itunes and won't sync

My ipod is driving me crazy. It started before I left for Iraq. It begin to sync to itunes only to freeze once it got about 3 gb's in. I would then unplug it only to find nothing on it. I sent it to my brother in the hopes he might be able to repair it. In a fit of drunken wisdom, he managed to inadvertently restore the factory settings and he sent it back to me with all sorts of movies and songs on it. I jammed out for a while only to find that slowly, the songs I used to be able to play would no longer work despite the fact they were listed on the ipod screen. I finally tried re-synching it only to have it freeze itunes three gb's in like it did before I left. I have restored it with itunes and done the restore thing with just the ipod with no results. If you have any suggestions, please help.

Have you tried doing a reset on the iPod? That may help if its the ipod directly... It may have something where it's not breaking to do the SYNC with the computer
Here's a link to help you with the reset, what ever you do just don't do the "restore" setp.. As this link does the whole 5 r's to help resovle issues...

  • Ipod freezing itunes when being plugged in and not recognised

    hi,
can anyone help me... i have an 30gb ipod and have tried everything to get it working with itunes. It works fine with others computers but with mine it just freezes itunes. As soon as i plug my pod in it freezes itunes. Sometimes if i'm lucky it starts to update it but then after 5 minutes it freezes itunes again. I have tried the 5 r's. I have installed the latest SMTP driver for xp. I have tried everything that apple have suggested on there sopport pages and nothing has helped. I have even reformatted my laptop just to get it to work but no luck.
If someone could please help me it would be much appreiated. It was a christmas present from someone close to me and don't wanna give up on it because have all ready spent many late nights on it.
    Thanks

  • Connect iPod to iTunes?

My computure krashed and all music is gone. Now when i reinstalled iTunes and are connecting my iPod it says that the iPod are connected to another library, and that i can chose between write over all songs in my iPod with the song in my new library (which is zero) or dont connect to iTunes at all. Is there any way that i can transfer all songs in my iPod to the new library? or just transfer them to the computure?
      Windows XP

DO NOT attach & sync your full iPod to an empty iTunes!!!
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to ‘Manually manage songs & playlists’ – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • HT1386 iPod Freezes iTunes

I'm trying to sync my iPod Classic, but it keeps freezing iTunes.
I've tried restoring it to factory settings. I've tried turning off anti virus & firewall. No joy. There are lots of other devices in my household, which use the same PC and all work fine...iPod shuffle/Nano/iPhone/Touch.
So I assume the problem must be with my iPod. If restoring it to factory settings didn't work, do I assume it it dead??

ya i ha the same problem. What u can do is that un-install itunes and then reinstall it again. This vastly helps.also restart ur system once u uninstall itunes. It should/must solve it.
This happens coz of one small coprrupted fime.song etc in itunes library.if still such happens try installing the itunes in a diff drive(d/e/f etc)
