Connecting iPod Shuffle 1st generation (Early 2005) to Windows Vista
Hi
I bought a early iPod Shuffle in 2005 and installed it on a Windows Xp Computer. The installation disk was for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The iPodWorks fine even now.
Want to install it on a Windows Vista Computer. Does not install properly. iPod not recognised. iPod never appears in the iTunes windows. I assume it needs a USB driver for Vista. Nothing on the Apple support website or so far as I can see in the discussion group for 1st generation iPod shuffles.
Regards
The 1st gen shuffle has REALLY excellent sound. It is better than 2nd gen shuffle, and other iPods, for sound. Because it has a separate docking connection (the USB plug), it is the only shuffle that can play music while it is charging. Plus, I like being able to hold it in my hand and control it (not clipped).
Because I liked it so much, a few years ago, I bought some broken ones being sold on eBay. Using these instructions
https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Shuffle_1st_Generation
I took them apart and tried to assemble working ones by swapping parts. Fortunately, the 1st gen shuffle is small, but not tiny. Unfortunately, the most common failure point (by far) was USB plug component (including a very delicate ribbon cable that connects to logic board). I have plenty of "spare parts" now, except for that USB plug part. So I am VERY careful when connecting and disconnecting my remaining working 1st gen shuffle, and try to do it as infrequently as possible.

My ipod shuffle (1st generation) will not restore. It says it is corrupted(error 1442) Is it possible to correct this problem, or is it beyond repair. It worked last time I used it on my laptop with Windows Vista. Any help would be much appreciated.
Im actually tilting it up where it cinnects to my iPod, not where it connects to my computer, and i have tried three(yes, 3) different cables, one of which i bought brand new. still nothing, and i've also tried different USB ports on my computer,....nothing. Could this simply be a hardware failure of somekind? maybe a physical problem...i mean, why would i have to tilt the cable in order for my computer to actually read my iPod? im looking at the USB connector on my iPod (maybe it's my imagination, not sure) it possible might be bent, the little metal part in the port.

How do you delete an id on ipod shuffle 1st generation?
I'm selling my iPod shuffle 1st generation and I can't get my name off of my iPod when I connect it to my laptop.
Select it in the iTunes sidebar, click on its name, and type a new name. If you're using iTunes 11, choose to show the sidebar from the View menu.

Help with iPod Shuffle - 1st generation - After restoring
Okay, i needed to restore my iPod shuffle (1st gen), as it was n't letting me put songs on. So when it restored, it started to autofill from the music library randomly, so all my songs were jumbled up. I didn't want this, so I tried to autofill it myself without the 'choose items randomly' box ticked, but it wouldn't synch. So, I restored it again, and tried again. As it was restoring, I noticed in a box that came up, I think were you type in the name of your iPod, there was a box that said something along the lines of 'Autofill from music library automatically when restored', so i unticked it. When it was restored again, and now completely empty, it wouldn't let me autofill manually again. So, just to get songs on my iPod, i have to have them on random, which I do NOT want.
Does anybody know what to do? I've tried that reset utlity thing, but that just comes up with the same thing.
Any help will be welcome
Thankyou!!!
iPod Shuffle 1st Generation Windows XPOn the contents page at the bottom, there is a box that reads "Choose Items Randomly". Uncheck it. I just noticed it while trying to sync my own iPod.

I have 2 iPod Shuffle 1st generations and they are both experiencing the same problem. They will play the music I download and the background music is clear in both ears but the main vocals are very, very quiet. I have tried 2 sets of working earbuds and both have the same problem. Neither have been used in a long time.
This is my second used ipod shuffle 1st generation.
I don't know if I'm stupid, crazy, or terribly
unlucky at this point, but I can't get the thing to
play (No problems with my video ipod ever !)I've
done everything in the manual. I've loaded it
through iTunes and it shows that the podcasts are on
there and the guide at the bottom shows that it's
3/4 full. It's charged. I unplug it from the USB
shove the head phones in, turn it on (the little
battery light shows it's getting juice)I press
play...nothing. I go through all the steps of
restoring ect. ad nauseum....nothing ! I press play
again (maybe it's on pause???....nothing! I turn it
up...I advance to the next
track?....nothing...nothing....nothing)
Since the exact thing is happening with this one (the
second one), and I've spent hours troubleshooting
them I don't know what else to do but give up and cry
into my beer.
Help !
Is the switch set to the 1st position, eg play-in-order? -
IPod Shuffle 1st Generation not recognised on only one of my computers
The iPod can be recognised on my netbook running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and my desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. However, on one desktop which is running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, it does not recognise the iPod in iTunes. In device manager, I can see 'Apple iPod USB Device' and 'Unknown Device'. This 'Unknown Device' only occurs when I plug in the iPod. 'My Computer' can't see it either. I had a look in 'Disk Management' and I saw 'Removable Disk' and 'No media'. I reinstalled iTunes and the drivers many times but nothing changes. I even tried an alternative to iTunes but that didn't work either. I also tried switching USB ports to no avail. I am very confused why it only doesn't work with one computer.
Sorry I just realised it's an iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation. I'm terribly sorry for not realising it earlier. Could someone possibly move this to the right forum?
Anyway, when I said the computer doesn't recognise the iPod, if I wait a long time, iTunes will eventually see it and say it is 'corrupted' and suggests restoring it. It still works fine on my other two computers. I tried restoring it as it suggested but it just gets stuck on 'Restoring iPod' for hours and nothing happens. -
Ipod shuffle 1st generation, itunes 7.0
My son just got a nano to replace shuffle 1st generation. Itunes recommended upgrading to 7.0 which we did, then the nano worked great. Grandma wants the shuffle and her songs on it, so I put it in 3 different usb ports and itunes and my computer still won't recognize it. I have restarted computer several times, and all usb ports I tried worked with the nano. What do I need to do? I searched the forums and all I found was to remove itunes and replace with older version of itunes. Won't that cause my son's nano to have issues with itunes again?
Windows XPiTunes locks when I attempt to load music from any
music folder. iTunes will recognize my iPod after
resetting it using the "iPod reset utility", but will
lock if I try to drag and drop, or Autofill.
However, iTunes will AUTOFILL from MUSIC folder at
startup following use of "iPod reset utility". If I
try to change the music or load a PODCAST, iPod
locks and will not sync. I have tried the five r's,
but no luck.

IPod Shuffle (1st Generation) NEW ERROR: recognize and charging problems
I'm tired. I'm quite tired.
I struggled for a month to resolve the 1418 error (My previous posts had thousand of views, until Apple removed them...).Finally Apple gave us the iPod Shuffle reset utility, which worked fine... My iPod Shuffle resurrected.
But now it's dead again, like many other users:
1)When I attach the iPod Shuffle to any PC, or to the wall charger, or to whatever, it's not recognized. Tried all
2)It still plays music
Apple, what's going on? I think you are swimming in the dark...
Sony Vaio FS315H Windows XPHere another one.
1st gen iPod Shuffle, stopped working after update to iTunes 7.0.x, which was basically forced to my system.
Every time I plugged my iPod in, it said: "Do you wanna update? Latest version? Get along? Do not think you can do without this update?".
I eventually agreed to upgrade my software, since it 'would update my iPod to the latest firmware'.
Well, it did not.
It killed my iPod Shuffle.
I see you have the same thing here.
So, what's the procedure to get a working one in exchange?
Since this is Apple's fault, I expect there to be a procedure for it?
