Connecting iPod to computer/ transfering songs to computer

I would like to transfer the songs on my ipod onto my computer... How can I do this without it automatically updating with itunes, and deleting all the songs, and then which programs work best with Windows to transfer songs onto the computer?
Thanks for your help!

If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, YamiPod gets good reviews. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for this and some others, they are generally quite straightforward:

iGadget Windows Only
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions

  • Connecting ipod nano after you "restore" your computer

I had to do a restoration on my computer after I was hit with some virus. Unfortunately I forgot to externally save my music files. Therefore, after the restoration on my computer was complete, all my music files were erased. My questions is this…..If I were to now connect my ipod nano to my computer, would it erased all the files I have on my ipod nano since they were erased on the computer during the restoration? What are my options? Any and all help is appreciated.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Is there a way to connect iPod Touch to internet over my computer?

I don't have wifi, but I have internet and I can't get an app to update without wifi. I really can't connect through my iTunes on my computer? This seems kind of strange.
Don't know which "generation" it is it was a gift. It may be the one right before the last update.
    Thanks for any help!

I think there two separate things being discussed here. One is syncing the iPod touch to the Mac. That's working fine. The other is using the iPod over WiFi, which has nothing to do with syncing. stephmayo is asking about using the iPod to connect to the Internet through the Mac, not syncing the iPod, I believe...
You have a MacBook with wireless networking (AirPort). If the MacBook is using a wired Ethernet connection for Internet access, you should be able to +share it+ over AirPort (WiFi) to your iPod touch.
Go to System Preferences Sharing pane. Select +Internet Sharing+ in the sidebar - do not check the box yet, just select it. Over to the right, set it so that you
    +Share your connection from *Built-in Ethernet*+
    +To computers using AirPort+
Click on the +AirPort Options+ button. You can name the network and enable encryption (security) using WEP. You can try it without encryption first to make sure it works.
Now, check the box next to +Internet Sharing+ in the sidebar, to turn ON this sharing service. Use your iPod to connect to this new wireless network you have established. If you need to make any changes to the AirPort settings (such as encryption) you have to turn OFF (uncheck) the service first.
The docking cable connection is only or charging and syncing. You cannot connect to the Internet from the iPod using the cable connection.

  • Transferring Songs from Computer to MP3 Pla

I bought a creative zen sleek photo last July and it always takes me awhile to put new songs on it as I have to drag and drop or to rip a CD. So I was wondering if creative had anything like itunes where you could have all of your music on your computer on a program and then to update your mp3 player you could eaily plug it into the computer and then quickly update it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

How are you putting songs on it at the moment? Which application are you using? The player comes with MediaSource which is an application you can use to transfer content to the player, if you have a large amount of music it'll just queue them for transfer and go through the list. If you have ripped a CD, then you can save it on your harddri've so you don't have to rip it again in future.

  • IPod freezes when transferring songs.

    Hi,
My iPod was working perfectly fine before the latest iPod update. Then when I updated my iPod I started having a lot of the same problems as everyone else; the computer not recognizing that the iPod's connected.
Anyways, I managed to somewhat fix the problem by restoring my iPod using the iPod update previous to the latest one. After doing that, I can now connect my iPod to my computer with no problems.
However, as you all know, restoring your iPod erases everything on it. So now I have to put all my music back on. This is where I have problems.
I have tried both the manual and automatic methods of transferring my songs from iTunes to my iPod and no success with either way. What happens is that as soon as I get to anywhere from the 100th to the 150th song in my iTunes library it gets stuck. For example it will say "Updating songs on Dijita's iPod. Copying 107 of 1000: Song Title" and it will stay there and not get any further. Any attempt to stop the process or shutting down iTunes freezes up the system.
If anyone can help me get my music back on my iPod, that would be fantastic.

I was having a very similar problem with my 3rd Gen, 15GB iPod. The iPod would crash and lock up iTunes and I had to just unplug the 'Pod to free up the system.
It turns out it was the FireWire hub I was using that was somehow causing the problem (the hub was also the cause of my iSight not working correctly with Delicious Library but that is another story). If you are using a hub, and you can take it out of the mix I'm guessing your iPod will work correctly.

  • Connected Ipod lost all playlists, songs in itunes and on ipod

I connected my video ipod to my computer, not for the first time, and all my songs and playlists were erased from my ipod and, in my itunes library, I lost all my playlists, recently purchased songs, and recently played folder. Why? How can I retrieve my playlists? How can I prevent this from happening again? Jeannine

    Weird.
While there's plenty of things that could change the playback speed in iTunes, I don't know of anything that could change the speed of playback on the iPod itself.
Maybe you've had a stroke. Might want to see a doctor about that.

  • IPod disconnects when transferring songs

I have an iPod Shuffle 512 Mb.
I cannot transfer more than one or maybe two songs at a time to it.
If I try to transfer more than two or three songs from my library to my iPod, iTunes disconnects and the reconnects the iPod!
This was the case both with iTunes-5.x and also with my newly installed iTunes-6.
    Why is that?
    Am I doing anything wrong?

I have the same problem with my iPod Shuffle 1Gb.
I have posted a similar question.
Apple suggested me to format my iPod as FAT32 and then start all over again.
But all that helped was to erase all songs from my iPod, and then I had to re-transfer them from my library... still only one or two songs at a time.
And no, it is not something with my computer's USB-ports. I have a memory stick, a printer, a camera, a scanner and a harddisk, all usb, and none of them ever does this thing with disconnecting and reconnecting.
If I use the iPod as a memory-drive, it doesn't do this, so this i clearly a problem with iTunes.
I am using iTunes version 6.0.1.3.

  • IPod Touch and transfering songs and podcasts

I just got the ipod touch yesterday and i went to put some songs on but it's different. You have to click the iPod and then select certain playlists. Is there anyway to just drag the song onto you ipod without having to make a playlist? And also I have a podcast that i want to download but i don't want all 151 of them so how do I put in just a couple? thanks.

Try going into your iPod in iTunes and in the SUMMARY section click on MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC AND VIDEOS. It should then let you drag individual songs and podcasts etc to your iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Transfering songs on iPod to new iTunes on new computer (Mac)

I just purchased a Mac. How do I transfer all the songs I have in my iPod to the iTunes in my new Mac?
I read one post (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329), but it very confusing.
At first glance, I though that the web site would be helpful, but it is not. Here is why: The first series of instructions asks that I do things with my old computer - I DON'T HAVE AN OLD COMPUTER. It is gone and now I have a new Mac with no music in my iTunes in the new Mac. I do, however, have an Ipod with all the songs on that.
Therefore, I scrolled down to the sections dealing with the new computer. The first section was "Get iTunes ready on your new computer." However, I already have iTunes on the new computer so I skipped that. The next section was for backing up any music on the new computer. I do not have any music on the new computer yet!!
So I next turned to "Copy music to new computer." Step number 3 says to "Locate the iPod on the new computer" but the prior instructions (1 and 2) never instructed me to connect my iPod to the new computer. Am I supposed to? If so, won't iTunes automatically start updating my Ipod (with all my songs on it!) and since I do not have any songs on my iTunes, everything on my iPod will be deleted? Help . . .
*Isn't there just a simple way to do it?*

Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
