Connecting ipod to other computer than my own

Is this a risky thing to do. If you launch itunes on someone elses computer will it erase the ipod of things not in that library?

will it erase the ipod of things not in that library?
If you have your iPod set to auto sync with your own iTunes library then there is a possibility that this can happen.

  • Can't Connect to My Other Computer - Grayed Out Icon

For some unknown reason I am unable to connect to my other computer. I see an icon for it in my finder window, but it looks grayed out. When I click 'connect', an alert box pops up saying that it's contacting the IP and "Timeout in X seconds". It counts down to 0 and nothing happens.
File sharing is on. I've restarted the computers. No firewalls. Bot h are able to connect to the internet. Very simple setup. What's wrong?

Have a MacBook. Shows I have an internet connection, but cannot get on. I do have connection with my other computer???

I've looked at the IP adress, and it started with 169.
This means you aren't actually connected to the Internet; only to your router.
An easy first attempt at a fix is to turn your router off and then on again.

  • Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer than my own? If so how?

Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer other than my own? If so how?

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

  • How to connect to an other computer through the internet

Please who can help me with Desktop Remote control and connecting through the internet. I know a lot is written about it, but it is still confusing.
So try to explain my situation:
I have an MacBook pro with Desktop Remote Control 3
    The other computer:
Apple PowerBook which is connected through and Thomson Speedtouch (wireless 716)
    External IP address xx.xx.xx.xx
    Internal IP address 192.168.1.66
    No firewalls
    My questions:
How do I check if my Thomson Speedtouch the ports 5900 and 32?? are open?
How can I open the ports on the router? Do I have to open the port on the router?
Then on the MacBook Pro, I start up ARD3
How do I scan for the computer on Internet? Do I use the external IP address?
How can I then connect to the Apple PowerBook? I cannot fill in the second internal IP address or do I?
I hope someone can help me.
If more info is needed, please ask me.
    Thank you....
    Hans

Neil thank you for your answer.
I opened Network Utility. Went to the last Tab "Port Scan"
I typed in: external IP address (i got this through the Widget SysStat which shows external IP)
Than I gave up scan between the ports 5890 - 5910 to check if those ports are open or not. I had to way for a moment, and then the result was: "Port Scan has completed....."
Ok, what do I know know? The ports are open or not?
So please can someone help me with the following:
    1) What should the result show me from Network utility?
    2) Opening the port, this has to be done on the Router or is it something the Internet Service Provider needs to do?
    3) I still have the question: how can I open the port, so with what application.
    4) What are the exact ports which needs to be open?
    5) About bridging in the router, does that have a special name. I didn't see in the router configuration program an option like that? When searching --> this is configured: A. Router-modem (NAT/PAT) - is there something special with NAT/PAT?
Hope someone can help me with a few of my questions.
    Thanks

  • Connecting iPod mini to computer

When I plug in my mini to the computer, it only charges--it does not update my songs. It doesn't even show that it is connected under the side toolbar on iTunes.
    What could the problem be?

When you plug your iPod into the computer in iTunes click "File" and then go down to "Update iPod". Maybe your iPod is set to manually update instead of automatically.

  • Connecting ipod to new computer

My old computer has broken and I have bought a new one. Is it possible to connect my ipod to my new compuer or will I lose everything on the ipod and have to start again?

If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes on a new computer. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
If you haven't transferred the songs from your old computer over to the new then there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Nothing happens when connecting iPod to the computer

  • Connecting ipod to new computer and using itunes library

Can anybody help. Iam ready to throw my ipod in the bin. I recently bought a new computer and downloaded itunes onto it. When I connect my ipod it keeps saying the ipod is linked to another itunes library and it displays a new itunes library on the computer now with none of my old songs, but they are still on my ipod itself. I do not have my old computer either.
The new itunes library that comes up will let me download music onto it but wont let me sync it to the ipod so i cant put anymore tunes on it. Any ideas?

Connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only

    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Connect ipod with new computer

I have an existing ipod classic with about 4,000 songs.  I have downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  Can I simply plug the ipod into the computer (Windows PC laptop) so that my Library and iPod will sync or is there another procedure?
    Thanks!

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like on of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • How to make a switch if i plug my ipod to other computer ?

    Hi everyone,
I have an ipod which already contains a lot of songs. I would like to plug my ipod to my new computer which itunes is installed without any song.
My problem is, i know when i plug my ipod to the computer, the itunes will warn me my ipod does not belongs to the music lib, if i click change, all my songs will be lose, but if i click no, i can't access my ipod. So how can i access my ipod in my new computer without losing all my songs ?

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer.

  • Connecting iPod v2.3 Computer Freeze

It's an old iPod (15GB right before click-wheel standard).
I recently connected it to my computer and not only iTunes froze up, but most of my other computer applications as well.
I received a component transfer error (Error 142) after a while. After many hard resets and computer resets and shut downs, I still had the same problem. iTunes will work fine alone, and so will the iPod (though it's unstable battery-wise).

If it does not have a click wheel, but it does have a Dock connector, it is a 3rd gen iPod. It is designed to be connected over FireWire, not USB. So if you are using USB, that may be the problem. It may be able to sync over USB when it is fully charged, but it can only charge when connected by FireWire. You also cannot use the Restore function in iTunes, unless there is a FireWire connection.
The only way to use it reliably with USB is to get this special two-ended Docking cable.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw
You connect the USB end to your computer and connect the FireWire end to the white square wall charging adapter (which also must be the FireWire type), so that it can sync and charge at the same time.
