Connecting iPod with AV Cables

I have the 5G iPod and use the AV cables to ocassionally watch some TV programing from iTunes. I find it all right for the shows and music videos.
Has anyone watched a movie yet from their iPod on a TV using the AV cables?
If so, how would you characterize the quality? Is it worth doing?
It seems that this may be a good way to watch the movies until iTV comes out (and even then, if to avoid spending $300)
Thanks in advance.
Russell

While I can't speak for the quality of the movie files available for sale through iTunes, I can say that I have updated to firmware version 1.2 and my original 5G 60Gig iPod now has increased video capabilities. I use the Universal Dock to connect to my monitor and amplifier using an s-video cable to BNC connector for video and a seperate 3.5mm to RCA plug cable for audio. I can play the full 640 x480 native rez claimed for the 5.1G iPod on my 5.0G iPod. How's it look? My files compare very favorably to the original DVD when played back from the iPod to a TV. This is a godsend when travelling. The specs of my files: I encode from DVD using NERO 7 - Re-Code, Profile: Nero Digital - Standard, Rez: (We'll use "Bewitched" as an example) 720x384, Bit Rate: Video-1.5Mbps Average Bitrate 2-pass VBR. Audio - 160Kbps Average Bitrate 2-pass VBR. MPEG-4 level 3 (not H.264). My total file size is actually a little smaller (1.08Gigs) using Nero-Recode vs. using Quicktime and the default iPod H.264 export profile (1.16Gigs) even though my native resolution and audio bit rate are higher. When played back from my PC to my TV my Nero MPEG-4 files also have chapter stops and subtitles. In case your wondering, the additional data for subtitles and chapter stops are invisible to iTunes and iPod and have no detrimental effect on their playablity. I don't know if other people are willing to go to the degree that I do to milk out the playback quality that I desire but having done the work I can justifiably say that Yes the iPod with firmware version 1.2 is very up to the task of outputting full DVD quality (scaled for proper display of aspect ratio) to a TV. The one caveat that I have seen is that the iPod has an interlaced video output where as many set top DVD players use progressive out put. This can show up as aliasing most notably during title crawls and scenes with strong single colors, red for example will alias noticably. I know I have been long-winded in my response but I tried to bring some usable information to the discussion. I'd like to hear from others about their video experiences.

I have an HP LaserJet 8150N that I use for my work and I have had this printer for ever and it is one heck of a work horse! I am trying to get it connected via ethernet cable directly to my iMac. I always had this printer connected via a network so I don't know if I am able to connect directly with a cable since it is a network printer. I have tried to reconfigure the printer using the JetDirect menu giving it a new IP address but still no luck. If anyone could help me through this issue I would appreciate it.

Second, seeing "connecting" and connection failed is normal. You must click on "Connect As" in the Finder window and then enter the username and password for the admin account on the other computer. That should fix things.
    Thanks for responding.
When does clicking on "Connect As" happen in the process above?
    After step six? Seven?
    After the connection has failed?
Is this the FInder window that shows the icon of the computer you want to copy the file from?
You should see "Connect As" in the Finder near the top right of the window as shown below:

  • Ipod with firewire cable

My son was given an older, 1st gen, I think, Ipod that seems to only work with firewire cable. Is there a way to charge this directly on a laptop with USB portsw only? Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
I wanted to try to buy a Firewire wall charger (the one he got seems not to be working very well), but I couldn't find any on the Apple website.

If it's a 1st or 2nd gen iPod, it does not have a dock connector; it has a FireWire port (like an external hard drive). So the FireWire cable used with it would have a FireWire connector at both ends.
Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
If you are able to try using your USB docking cable, the iPod is probably a 3rd gen. Does it have a touch wheel and four round touch button in a line between the wheel and display? It was the first iPod with the standard dock connector, but unfortunately, the 3rd gen iPod was designed to work with FireWire, so it will not charge over USB.
Apple does not sell the FireWire power adapter these days, but you can find them on eBay. Make sure it is the FireWire type.
If you want to use USB 2.0 to connect and sync the 3rd gen iPod, and you are able to get a FireWire power adapter, you can get this special cable that Apple still sells.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A
It has both a FireWire connector and a USB connector. You connect the USB connector to your laptop USB port. At the same time, you connect the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter to supply power for charging.

  • Can I connect iPod (with dock connector) with just a USB connector?

My mother-in-law gave my daughter her old iPod (with dock connector). It was supposed to come with an adapter that converts the 6-pin firewire cable to a USB cable (you are supposed to plug the 6-pin into the dock connector to charge it, then use the adapter to connect to your computer). We never got The adapter, so I just used USB connector from my own iPod nano to connect the old iPod into the computer. All kinds of error messages. I've now restored the iPod and it seems to be working, but I'm afraid to plug it back in using just the USB cable. Is it possible to connect the USB cable directly from the iPod to the computer without the adapter? Or could the problem be that I have also use my iPod nano on this computer? Thanks for any help you can provide.

A 15GB iPod would have to be a 3rd gen iPod.  It has a touch (not click) wheel with four touch buttons in a row that glow orange during use, correct?  That model needs to be connected using FireWire, because it cannot charge over USB.
If your new Mac has a Thunderbolt port, you can get an adapter for FireWire
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
plus an adapter for FireWire 800 to FireWire 400
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
Another way, if you have the square white FireWire power adapter that came with your iPod, is to get a special docking cable that Apple used to sell a long time ago.  It has both USB and FireWire connectors.  Here's a listing for a third-party version on eBay
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vanco-iPod-Dock-Connector-to-1-USB-1-FireWire-Cable-/2 71074766489?pt=US_MP3_Player_Chargers_Cradles&hash=item3f1d50ae99
(Search on "FireWire USB iPod docking cable" to see other listings.)
What you do with this thing is plug the USB connector to your Mac's USB port, the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter, and the dock connector to the iPod.  iPod can then sync over USB while getting power over FireWire.
I would go with that special cable, to avoid using a series of adapters (which adds complexity and unreliability) and tying up the valuable Thunderbolt port for just your iPod.

  • AE Connection Problem with Rogers Cable

I purchased a new MBP and AE unit a week ago, and had both of them up and running last week. I subscribe to Rogers' high-speed internet here in Toronto. I have two outlets in my apartment and was able to connect to the internet using both of them by connecting an ethernet cable directly to the MBP and by plugging the ethernet cable into the AE i.e., I was able to access the internet both wirelessly and "wired"-ly from both outlets. The cable to the modem is running through a splitter supplied by Rogers.
Last night, I received a Rogers HDTV PVR box (a pathetic Tivo simulator available here in Canada because Tivo is unavailable to us here because the cable companies here are monopolist luddites) and installed it. Rogers had to reset my cable box because I wasn't receiving the channels I was supposed to get.
Later, I moved the modem to the location by the tv and brought down the AE to be able to wire it through the sound system. I plugged in the AE, and it goes through the startup process, and all I see is the flashing amber LED. This happens at both cable hookup locations. I am, however, able to connect to the internet with my MBP if I plug the ethernet cable directly into the MBP using both hookups. I have plugged and unplugged the modem and the AE several times to no avail. The MBP is able to see the AE because I tried reconfiguring the AE and the MBP was able to signal the AE to restart itself. The problem is that I load up the browser and the status bar just hangs there, sort of half-filled.
I'm pretty sure the splitter is irrelevant given that I've always had the splitter before the modem. I'm able to connect to the internet with a direct ethernet cable connection, so I don't really think there's anything wrong with the connection being provided by Rogers.
    So my questions are...
Could the connection of the television cable box have somehow interfered with the modem's ability to talk to AE? Would the cable company's reset of the box interfered?
Since I have my TV and sound system set up now, there is potential for more radio interference, but it doesn't seem that extreme a setup...could this really be the culprit?
Am I supposed to get a solid green LED if the cable modem is functioning properly, even if my MBP isn't powered up? I can't remember if you can get the green light without firing up the MBP?
I've read some of the forums already, so it seems like this might have something to do with MAC addressing, etc. (something I'm not incredibly familiar with). As a first strike, I've unplugged absolutely everything since last night, and will retry hooking it up again today. Should this fail, is there anything else I should try?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    MacBookPro 15" 2.17GHz 1GB RAM

The issue may be that you just need to re-syncronize the cable modem with the AirPort Express (AX). You mentioned a lot of cable pulling, and I assumed you had power off of all the devices (modem, AX, and MBP) before doing so...correct?
I suggest that you perform a "factory default" reset on the AX to get it back to it's "out-of-the-box" condition. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
With all powered-off, reconnect the cable to the cable modem, and the Ethernet cable between the modem and the AX.
    - Power-on the cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes. Are all of the modem status lights correct?
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes. Is the AX's status light solid green?
    - Power-on your MBP
Can you connect to the Internet now?

  • Problem connecting ipod with dvd

Hi. I have an ipod nano. Before installing software version 1.2 I could connect it with my dvd via usb and manage it as a external disk, but after installing ipod software version 1.2 my dvd does not recognize ipod when I connect it via usb. I also have an ipod video with the same software and have the same problem. Anyone could help me?.
    Thanks.

If you have a new enough iPod, they are now requiring an apple adapter that has the apple computer chip in it to work. I did a general search on the web and came up with better info than here.

  • Connecting iPod with Treadmill (Nike Program)

According to the Nike+ iPod site, Star Trac treadmills are now being equipped with iPod connectors for direct download of running/workout information, which than be loaded into the same Nike+ online program to track runs. Has anyone used this? It bypasses the need for the special shoes and transmitting chip, but I wonder if special software is required for the iPod to recognize this connection and download this info from the treadmill?

Thanks for your reply, I think that's what caused the problems. I tried to transfer music to the iPod with iTunes today and the OTG playlist remained the same.
There's just one thing that bugs me. Why can't the iPod or iTunes leave my OTG playlist the way it is when I connect? Instead it creates an OTG playlist 1 which can't be altered by adding or removing songs. I mean, is there really no way to keep a live playlist with all songs I prefer to hear? I Don't want to create a new playlist every time I want to add or remove a few songs from my prefered songs selection. It's weird that nobody has thought about that yet.
Well, I guess I gotta talk to Red Chair Software then, hope they'll fix the bug.

  • Connecting iPod with 5000 songs to Mac

I have a 4th generation iPod with about 2000 songs on my iMac G4 computer running Mac OS X (10.4.7) and iTunes 7.01. I have recently been given an iPod 5th generation with color screen with about 5000 songs. I also have the installation disc. This latter iPod was configured for a PC but I understand this makes no difference. I would like to install the newer iPod with all of its songs on my computer. I am not concerned with losing all of the songs from my earlier iPod since I have them all downloaded. My question is this. How do I go about installing the newer iPod without losing the songs already on it and do I need to clear all of the songs already in my iTunes folder? Is it possible to have both iTunes selections running at the same time?

  • When I connected my ipod with the cable to my laptop so I could sync my itunes library.

Came up with this error message: Itunes could not connect to iPhone. An unknown error occured (OE8000084).  What do I do?

  • Computer reboots when connecting ipod to USB cable.

Has this happened to anyone else?
All of a sudden now, whenever I connect my ipod to the USB cable, it makes my computer reboot! And it doesn't stop rebooting until I disconnect the ipod!
I have no idea why this is happening, and I don't know how to make it stop.
I am really starting to lose my faith in EVERY item that Apple has created.

When I connect my ipod to USB immediately following taking it off my AC adapter, it causes my computer (PC, XP) to restart.
Reinstall Windows. This has nothing to do with iTunes or any other Apple software, because that functionality is entirely Windows based.
If reinstalling windows fresh (and doing all the updates) doesn't fix it, then you have a hardware problem on the PC.

  • Connect ipod with new computer

I have an existing ipod classic with about 4,000 songs.  I have downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  Can I simply plug the ipod into the computer (Windows PC laptop) so that my Library and iPod will sync or is there another procedure?
    Thanks!

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like on of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • Connect Ipod with LCD by USB port

Hi, I've got a new LCD that has a USB in port and it read external HD.
On my Ipod 20Gb 4g, I've some divx film stored. May I connect the Ipod to LCD? Ipod will be recognized as an Hard Disk in spit of on the LCD obviuosly there are not Itunes sw?
In other words, Ipod can be recognized as an Hard Disk by a device that hasn't Itunes?

    Hi Al!
You are absolutely right, the system is supposed to work without any extra investment! Unfortunately I do not have any more news on this. My ipod is not even recognised but maybe 2nd gen ipods (mini) are not compatible with blue&me. I have asked lancia to help so I am still waiting to hear something from the dealers. I'll let you know if i get something new. in the mean time i'll check out this dension tip you gave me, but i refuse to spend more money on this!!!

  • Bluetooth cannot connect ipod with Ipad2

I cannot get my Ipod touch paired with my Ipad2, Is it me or it is something wrong with the software?, I can connect either one with my Mac but cannot connect neither share files between Ipod and Ipad.

There is nothing to do.  This has never been a feature of the ipod.

  • Connecting ipod with songs to computer with no songs in itunes library

My computer recently went bad(hard drive)and my itunes was not saved.Enter new hard drive with itunes and empty library. If I hook up my ipod to the computer, will the songs be erased? Is there a way to get the songs from the ipod to the computer?

If you sync with the empty iTunes on the new computer/Hard Drive then you will lose everything on your iPod. What you will need to do is what you stated and that is get the music out of your iPod and into your iTunes. Then you can sync.
Check out [*This Thread*|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10570955#10570955] and focus on the post by Zevoneer. You will find several software that is availabel on the internet which will help you move your music, videos and photos etc out of your current ipod and into your iTunes.
One thing to note and that is if everything on your iPod is purchased via iTunes store then you can transfer that to your empty iTunes by going to File and then choosing *Transfer all Purchases* option. Do this before you sync. If this is not the case then go with the option recommended above.
