Connecting laptop to desktop

Can I connect my macBook to my iMac, sort of like an external hard drive, so I can pull large files off it? If so, what cable/port should I use?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hook both machines up with a FireWire cable and start one computer with the T key held down. That computer's hard disk should then appear on the other machine's desktop, and you can then copy files to or from it.

  • Laptop to desktop connection

I installed a linksys USB adapter on my desktop, and dowloaded the software. It seems to be working, since I can connect  to a neighbor's network. I can also connect to her network with my laptop. The problem is, I can't connect to my deasktop with my laptop. I have  searched for a solution, but had no luck.
In Network Connections, on my desktop, I have:
Verizon broadband connection thru WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
and ---Local Area Connection with limited or no connectivity thru the ethernet card. (if I disable this, I lose the Verizon connection)
and ---1394 Connection connected thru 1394 Net Adapter
and----Wireless Network Connection connected thru USB adapter
    Can anybody help?
    Thank, Rich

#1 The Westell 2200 is a modem combeo (modem and router-all-in-one), and it  is in router modem - unless an user behind it put it into bridge mode.
    I point to
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/9265
To detect if the Westell 2200 is in bridge mode, do the following..
#1 Go to Start -> Run.
#2 Type in cmd and press enter.
#3 In the new window, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
#4 With your web browser with the comptuter that  you can get online with, go to a web site that displays the public IP that you are coming from.
    Such as http://www.whatsmyip.org/
#5 If any of the IP Address on your computer match (are the same), then the modem is in bridge mode.
If the Westell 2200 is in router mode: You could get a Wireles Access point, follow the directions on connecting it to the router, and get your computers on by wireless. Depending on which one you buy, it may also have at least two LAN ports.
Not buying any wireless access point?
#1 You could use ICS http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
#2 Or the computer with two NICs, could use bridge mode on the XP computer.

  • How to set up internet connection to laptop and desktop?

I have a modem connected to an old lynksis router. I have my desktop hooked in port 2 on the router and my laptop in port one..
The desktop's  network map shows it connected to a switch(my router) and the switch to my laptop and the laptop to the internet..
Thus I have internet connection on my desktop
but my problem is that the network map on the laptop shows it connected to the switch and the switch to my desktop
    thus no internet connection..
how do I connect the laptop to the internet as well as share files? I'm confused after fiddling around for an hour.

    Hello,
First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

  • Connecting laptop to internet via cell phone

I heard i can use my cell phone to connect my laptop to the internet, i currently have a lg envy touch , with a 25 megabyte plan which would not be enough as I am wanting to get rid of current dsl plan and wanting to use my wireless plan as my only paid source of internet connection in my home.
I can upgrade plan to unlimited for 29.99 per month which is what i currently pay for my home dsl.  I was told by verizon rep i could use a smartphone ( droid/ droid incredible) to set up a wireless connection in which i could also use my ipod and nintendo dsi to connect to internet as well at the same time as the laptop.
So my thinking is i add another line to my 2100 minute family plan for additional monthly cost of 9.99 get the droid for 199.99 with the unlimited plan of 29.99 bringing my total monthly bill to 170.00 minus taxes. I currently only use about 900-1000 minutes but the savings of dropping minutes just doesnt seem worth it to me as I have children on my plan and their minutes will increase at some point and I would rather be locked in to a plan that gives me more than needed.
So I am wondering if others on this forum could give me their opinion/advise?
Does anyone else use the unlimited 29.99 plan as their only source of internet connection? and how fast/slow etc?
If it matters I will be using the internet connection in Pasadena Texas and mainly we use the internet for general searches on basic info, job searches, facebook,  ipod music, no gaming or anything complicated, just a typical basic internet family use.
    Thank you so much!
    Shannon

In addition to the unlimited $29.99 data plan, you would also need a $29.99 tethering plan, so it would cost you $60 a month - and the connection would not be as good as your DSL.  And we use our DSL to connect to a router and have several laptops and desktops using our DSL, which would not work with a tethered connection.  My advice - skip the tethering and keep the DSL.

  • Connection to Remote Desktop is keep dropping

    Hello everybody,
I use my laptop to remote in to my office work station. So, what I do is I go through a portal, which authenticates me to login to my office work station. When I start working on it, my remote connection drops for every 3 (approx)  minutes.
But the actual laptop wont loose WIFI connection.
As an example, If I am listening to Pandora on my laptop and connects to my office work station through a portal, I just looses my connection to portal and automatically it reconnects in in first of its 20 retries.  But laptop never stops playing Pandora
music, so It never looses WIFI connection, for some reason it just drops the remote connection.
    Laptop: Dell Inspiron 13Z
I never had this problem with my other DELL latitude laptop which runs Windows 7. It never drops connection to remote desktop.  I am not sure whether it is IE 11 bug or Windows 8.1 bug or this crappy DELL inspiron 13 Z bug.
    What I did so far.
Changed the adapter settings to never save power. Changed settings to never sleeps, hibernate.
Any help is truly appreciated. With out that remote in functionality this laptop is literally a brick.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
Have you setup the printer redirect in RDP?
If so, please uncheck it for testing this issue.
Meanwhile, if this issue happened while using wireless connections, try to connect to internet via cable to see what’s going on.
For further research, please upload the event log related to your RDP here.
    Look forward to your response.

  • Connecting A100-306 & Desktop via Wireless Modem/Router: access is denied

I am attempting to file/printer share between my A100-306 laptop and desktop units.
I have used the Windows Wizard to create internet connection/LAN.
This has been successful with the internet connection (via Belkin 54g Modem/Wireless Router) but my "Troarn" LAN doesn't seem to be recognised by the laptop.
When I interrogate, on the laptop, My Network places/View Workgroup Computers, the page is blank!!
But when I interrogate, on the Desktop, My Network places/View Workgroup Computers, both computers are shown. If I attempt, on the Desktop, to connect access is denied.
    Has anyone got any suggestions??

    Hi
    - Check if you have disabled the firewalls on the notebook.
    - Be sure that every computer is placed in the same workgroup.
    - Check the TCP/IP protocol settings.
If one computer has IP address 168.192.50.1 the other should has for example 168.192.50.2 and so on.
    - If you want to access any folders you should set the rights for sharing this folder.

  • Moving Music Videos between laptop and desktop

I have purchased 4 music videos from iTunes store. They are on my laptop. I was travelling on business and wanted to try out the new music videos.
Now that I am home and using my Dual G5 desktop, how do I move or share these videos off my laptop top to my desktop? Is there any way to sync two iTunes libraries to keep them the same. Since I own both laptop and desktop seems rather stupid to not be able to do this.
I really just started using iTunes when the video part was released, so I maybe overlooking something really easy to fix this issue.
I have turned on iTunes music library sharing on the laptop but only audio music is shown when viewing from my iTunes desktop. No videos are listed. I event made a playlist folder on my laptop called Videos and copied the videos into this list.
The list "Video" shows up when looking from my desktop, but no vidoes are listed in the playlist.
    thanks

    Bill,
"Is there any way to sync two iTunes libraries to keep them the same. Since I own both laptop and desktop seems rather stupid to not be able to do this."
I have the very same situation as many others do, so I've asked the very same question to an Apple Genius at the Manhattan Village Store in CA, and the answer is no. Why? You can have multiple iPods connected to a single computer, but not multiple computers connected to a single iPod. The reason for that is DRM.
Your best bet is to keep both libraries synched using apps like "You Synchronize" or "Folder Synchroniser", this way you'll have the same library across both Macs, and you can use any one as a Master for your iPod. Works for me!

  • Merging catalogs on Laptop and Desktop in LR 3

Had a look around but can't find a straightforward guide to what must be a common request now photographers like myslef are expected to take laptops out on the road and email/burn/upload the best shots there and then and go back and work on all the images to later supply a cd etc.
I have LR 3 running on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro, my main work catalog is on the desktop Mac Pro, upgraded from LR 1.4.
I now have a few jobs on my laptop where I have picked the best shots for emailing from location, and want to bring these shoots back into my main Desktop catalog.
I give each job a job number X1234, X1235 etc and they are stored in individual folders on the hard drive of either the laptop or desktop.
What I've done in the past is to drag the flder over to the desktop and then import the images from the newly dragged folder.
Would the best way for me be to 'Import from Catalog' in the desktop LR menu and then chose 'Copy new photos to a new location and import' in the dialog?
Would this keep editing and ratings and metadata eg captions for the few 'picks' I have chosen and rated and edited out in the field, or is there another step to it?
    Thanks

I came looking for the same help.  I'm just finishing up a month long shoot in Yellowstone/Glacier/Montana (plus one wedding, to boot).  I'm finally somewhat back to civilization (hotel room w/ internet), and am trying to figure out the best way to get my images on my home computer with all the editing/organization/metadata additions intact when I get home.  I have nearly 5,000 .dngs to move from the laptop to the main computer.  I've backed them up all during the trip on an external HD.  From what I gather, the way to get them over to the home computer is backup using "export as catalog" option to the external HD (including "negatives"), connect the external HD to the home computer and import from catalog (moving files) into the home computer.  To be safe, I've saved all metadata to the files before exporting.
Thanks for the help.  Lightroom (and CS5) help is pretty lame--especailly when you're in a tent in the Beartooth Wilderness.

  • If I can connect using remote desktop, does it mean I can connect using ftp?

Hello everyone, I have a question about connection using ftp.
Normally when I want to connect through ftp, everything is provided such as the ftp name and username and password by my hosting service. But now I don't have all these details about a local server in my company office because the server is actually not hosting
any sites. It's just a server where documents are stored.
But I need a way to connect to this server through my web application.
    All I know are:
It is possible to connect through remote desktop to that server
There is an ip address for that server ( The server machine is in my company office)
I have a username and password that allows me to access network drive on that server (I can do this only by directly plugging the cat5 cable to my laptop)
When I configure my outlook email using microsoft exchange server, this is how my settings look like (example.net.au is just for example sake):
    Server: server1.example.net.au
    User name: [email protected]
Does the ftp detail exist for this server? How do I find out?

Thanks for the reply, Dave. The problem is the admin is not working here anymore. I wonder if there is a way i could figure that out. Out of curiosity how do ftp details created? If I want to set up FTP details from scratch, what do I need?
    Thanks
you need to ask anyone from your company who is familiar in your IT infrastructure.
starting FTP from scratch, is okay but security is one thing.
you might end up an FTP server that is free or open to the internet, make sure you exactly know what you are doing.
even though there's a lot of guide on the internet, make sure also you understand what you are following in the guide.
Please check with someone who is quite familiar on this kind of things.

  • Unable to connect laptop

I have a WRT54G2V1 connected to my desktop. I am trying to get my laptop to connect to the internet. I cannot find a network name or WEP key. I tried putting in the default 192.168.1.1 & use admin as the password but it kept wanting me to put in a user name. My desktop runs on Vista and my laptop runs on XP. I don't know if there is any other information you need but I would appreciate any help you could give me!
    Thank you,
    Kelly

Try to reset the router. Afterwards, go to the setup page and check if you can access it.
To get your internet back again, follow the procedure below:
For DSL connection, here's the procedure.
For Cable connection, here's the procedure.

  • Error Message trying to connect BB and Desktop Manager

I've had my BB for a few months now, and I used to be able to connect it to my laptop and sync Outlook data. Now it won't connect to the Desktop Manager any more. I always get an error message, and this is the technical data it "Sends" to whomever, in the error reporting:
    C:\DOCUME~1\GAYLEE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc171.dir00\DesktopMgr.exe.mdmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\GAYLEE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc171.dir00\appcompat.txt
How do I get BB to connect to DM and start syncing again?
    Thanks for help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

i am seeing alot of sync issues lately, the forced windows security update last week looks like it might be the culprit. reinstalling DTM has fixed it for a couple PCs for me. just thinking if you are goign to uninstall 4.3, might as well upgrade on the install.

  • Tranferring video between laptop and desktop

Is it possible to -via a USB/Firewire- to transfer some FCE work from my laptop directly to my Imac or do I need to pop it onto a DV tape and load it into the Imac?
    Thanks.

You can transfer files from one Mac to another via Firewire using what's called Target Disk Mode.
To do this, power on your iMac while holding down the letter T key. Keep holding down the T key until you see the standard yellow firewire logo appear on the iMac's screen (that's all that will be on the screen, just the firewire logo.) Then connect your laptop to your iMac with a Firewire cable and start up your laptop. Your iMac will show up on your laptop's desktop just as if it were another disk drive. From there you can use the Finder (on your laptop) to copy files & folders to your iMac.
When you're done, shut down your laptop. Then turn off your iMac by holding down the power button until it shuts off. Then turn off the power to both Macs. Then unplug the firewire cable.
    Voila ... done.
ps. This is not a hack ... this is a standard Apple procedure. And, obtw, it cannot be done via USB

  • Photosmart wireless B110 printer has lost its connection with my desktop PC.

My Photosmart wireless B110 printer has lost its connection with my desktop PC. I can still print from my laptop so I know the printer is working fine.
When I check ink levels through 'Printer Proerties' the message I get is 'The computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device', so I guess this is a clue. I would appreciate any help you can give.
    THank you.

Just as a preliminary step, we're going to go through a complete and clean uninstallation and reinstallation. First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it. Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.
In the START menu type "%temp%" and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.
Then follow this link to download the full feature software and drivers for the printer (be sure to select your correct OS):
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4022343
Install that and let me know the result!
    Have a great day!
