Connecting laptop to existing router connection

I'm trying to connect my laptop to an existing linksys wrt54g connection.  I can get a good connection, and am able to successfully input my network key, but cannot get the internet to connect.  Trying to connect to a wpa2 connection, laptop has windows xp and service pack 3.  Any suggestion?

If it shows connected ..... then check what is the Error message you are getting while connecting to the network ......

  • Connect Airport Extreme to existing router without ethernet cable

I am looking to connect my Airport Extreme to an existing router without the use of the ethernet cable.  The existing router is on the ground floor whilst I would like to install the Airport Extreme in the first floor to improve WiFi range on the 1st floor.  I am able to connect Airport Extreme to the router with the ethernet cable (in which case both the devices have to be close to one another on the ground floor) but unable to get Airport Extreme set up without the ethernet cable.  Is it possible to connect Airport Extreme to the existing router on a non-wired basis (i.e. without the ethernet cable) and if yes, how would be I able to do it.  Any help would be appreciated.

The AirPort Extreme can connect wirelessly.....IF.....your existing router is also another Apple router.
Is that the case here?  If yes, what model number is your existing Apple router?
If no, you will need to continue to connect the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • I want to set up my time capsule using my existing router.

The set up guide gives me instructions to open AirPort Utility, select Time Capsule and click continue. When I do it tells me that this requires switching networks, which is exactly what I don't think I want to do. Where am I going wrong?

plug the ethernet cable into your existing router, the other end into the WAN port on the TC. Set your router to be the DHCP server on the network.
Go to TC settings and manually configure it into BRIDGE mode. Make sure the DHCP server is turned off and it should work fine. I have a Netgear router as my ADSL router, this is connected to the internal house GB LAN. The TC is in my home office and as plugged into one of the GB ports in the office which then goes back to the office GB switch and the back to the main house GB switch and on to the Netgear router. My TC is then configured as described. I also have 4 Airport express base stations configured in the same way and all hardwired to the GB backbone. All of the Airports including the Netgear are set to the same network ID and this gives me single wireless roaming around the whole house for macbook, iPhone etc. As an aside my Xbox also works wirelessly on the same wireless network when I move it from den as does my Wii. The rest of the time it is hard wired.
    Hope this helps.

  • I just bought a mac book pro and airport time capsule. Which one should I turn on first to get it going. We do have an existing router and old PC in the house.

    Hi
I just brought home a mac book pro 13" with retina and the airport time capsule . What one should I turn on/ hook up first? We have an existing router in the home and an old PC.
    Suggestions?

Turn off you cable/DSL modem, your computer, and the old router. Disconnect the computer's Ethernet cable from the old router. Replace the old router with the Time Capsule. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Connect the computer's Ethernet port to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable.
Turn on the modem and wait until the status lights indicate connection with the ISP. Turn on the Time Capsule and wait for the amber light to begin flashing. Open Airport Utility in your Utilities folder to configure the Time Capsule.
If a user guide came with the Time Capsule I suggest you follow it's instructions.

  • Non existent route-map applied to redistribution

If a non existent route-map is referred in a redistribute command . How does it effect ?
    Example configuration
    address-family ipv4 vrf VRF:MMS:MGD:XLC:190
      redistribute connected route-map MGD_XLC
      redistribute static route-map VPN_XLC
      no synchronization
     exit-address-family
The above mentioned route-maps don't exist in the configuration

    Hi,
By its very nature, this is an incorrect configuration. Different IOS versions may react differently to incorrect configuration. Therefore, do not take the results you find out on your particular router as a general rule.
In principle, there are only two possibilities when you reference a non-existent route-map in your redistribution: Either all routes are redistributed indiscriminately, or no routes are redistributed at all. Now, in your case, checking the show ip bgp vpnv4 vrf VRF:MMS:MGD:XLC:190 and comparing it with show ip route vrf VRF:MMS:MGD:XLC:190 static and show ip route vrf VRF:MMS:MGD:XLC:190 connected should tell you right away whether any (that is, all) or no routes have been injected into BGP RIB from this VRF.

    does a usb cable
does a Usb cable to60 Watt L-Tip Power Adapter charger for Apple MacBook Pro Laptop Charger exist? i have an external battery pack i would like to use to charge my iphone and macbook pro.

Not that I am aware of.  An Internet search on your part will be required.  If you should find something to that effect, note it will not be endorsed by Apple and the magnetic connector will probably be in violation of Apple patents.

  • Cisco ASR1004 error %VRF specified does not match existing router

    Hi all,
I have a problem and I really do not know the reason.
Simple scenario. I need to configure ospf into a ASR1004 router.
    Here the command
    vrf definition TEST-02
     address-family ipv4
     exit-address-family
    interface Loopback25
     description TEST-02
    vrf forwarding TEST-02
     ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
     ip ospf 2 area 0.0.0.1
As soon I am running the command  ip ospf 2 area 0.0.0.1, I got this error %VRF specified does not match existing router.
I configure with success other different vrf before and after this problem so I can not understand why the router is refusing this configuration.
    Any idea?
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Fabio.

    Hello.
Your OSPF process 2 (in global configuration mode) should be configured with vrf keyword like following:
     router ospf 2 vrf TEST-02

  • Connecting a 2nd laptop to wireless router

Hi, Everyone - I have my Mac desktop connected to a WRT54GS wireless router, as well as a Dell laptop connected. All is working fine up till now...
Now I'm trying to connect a 2nd Dell laptop but can't get it to connect! It detects the network, but when you click on "connect" it says "acquiring connection" but then it gives an error saying something about limited access. It is a secured network, BTW.
How can I get this 2nd computer connected?
I also noticed something called "Default Tx Key" which is set to 1 - this key is what the 1st laptop is using. How do I get the 2nd one to be available - if I click on #2 for the default key, it disables #1.
What do I need to do?!! Thanks so much!

use the same key for ALL wireless devices, it is a shared key. so the key for #1 is used on ALL of the laptops.

  • Why can i get a connection w/my wireless laptop with this router (WRT54GS ) but not on the desktop?

I have an excellent signal w/this laptop (wireless) but when I try to use the desktop with the same router it wont go. Do I need driver download? Do I need an IP address for the router? I use tech support for connecting the desktop to the internet straight from the modem they sent me but because I didnot buy the router from them, they wont help me figure out once I plug in the router and setup more than one machine, i cant do it. Initailly, I setup everything w/my laptop being the main computer in my home until I got this desktop recently. So knowing the desktop is fine because it works straight from the modem,  and the laptop works w/the router and modem hooked up together but not the desktop, what the HECK is the problem? I dont have any cd or anything w/this router because when I moved, i never found the box it came in again. Is there someplace online I can find what I need? Im wondering how I will know if I have a response from someone on this thread? will I get an email from this site? gosh Im confused.

How you are trying to use the desktop...wired or wireless?
If you are trying to connect the computer to the router via an Ethernet cable then, try changing the cable.Check the ip address you are getting on the computer...
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then type ping 4.2.2.2 and press Enter, if you get request timed out, then you need to upgrade your router's firmware...If you get 4 replies then type ping yahoo.com and press Enter...If you get replies for Yahoo then you should get the Internet after adjusting the browser settings...
Adjusting Browser Settings : Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on OK...Close the IE and re-open it...
If yahoo times out then provide static DNS on your LAN Connection...
Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Local Area Connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the Following DNS Settings' Preferred DNS 4.2.2.2 Alternate DNS - 192.168.1.1>>Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...You should be able to go online...

  • Unable to connect to internet with hp laptop using xfinity router/modem

Hi,I have a hp pavilion computer model dv9910us with windows vista hom premium OS.  I have an xfinity wireless gateway device modem/router.  I have had this at another location and it worked using verizon with a separate modem and router.  I also tried it at a xfinity location with a separate modem and router and it worked.  I got a separate wireless adapter and installed that and disabled the atheros ar5007 adapter in the device manager.  will that atheros 2011 adapter work with this model computer using the windows vista home premium os.  If so, could I leave the ar5007 disabled and install the 2011 to make sure it's ok before uninstalling the ar5007.  I'm really a novice and just stumbling my way through this.  Any help is appreciated.

Hi: You should enable the atheros wireless card, and install this driver.  It will have no effect on the other one you are using. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5060881&swItemId=ob_108905_1&swEnvOid=4059# Then shut down the PC, remove the usb adapter, reboot, and see if you can connect via the atheros card.

  • Time Capsule with existing router Q's

I've been looking through a bunch of earlier posts here and I just want to make sure I understand my options correctly for my 3rd Gen TC before I start fiddling with settings... I need to change my setup I've used successfully for years because I just moved. Previous setup had internet via Ethernet and I kept my TC up in the attic connected to my iMac via its own network.
Current setup necessitates cable modem/router providing internet to my iMac wirelessly. I'd prefer to still keep the TC in the attic rather than connect it to the router via Ethernet -- so if I've understood everything correctly my only way to do this is to accept that my backups will run at half-speed and use the hidden option-click method of selecting "Join A Wireless Network"? I also understand that I will not be able to connect any other devices to the TC in this setup -- I won't need to, as everything else I need goes through the router.
Since I'm somewhat of a networking newbie can someone please run me through any and all steps needed to accomplish that wireless TC in the attic configuration?
And, can you also please just confirm that it is only the *TC backups* that will have their speed affected by this set-up, and not anything else connected to my router (like Apple TV) and/or internet speed?
Lastly, if I try this setup and ultimately determine the backups are just too painfully slow, am I correct in my understanding that the only other option I have is to plug the TC directly into my router via Ethernet and turn wireless off on the TC? Is there any other setting(s) I need to adjust in order to implement that hard-wired configuration?
    Many thanks in advance.

    1) TC Firmware to 7.6.4 (I am currently 7.5.1)
    2) Airport Utility to 5.6.1 (I am currently 5.5.3)
Let me know if I should do either or both of those?...
Your Gen3 TC is perfectly happy with 7.5.1
I don't think 5.5.3 is any different to 5.6.1, although if you wanted to upgrade that, I would not think it would matter.. unlike upgrading firmware which can do terrible things.

Let me get the whole network straight.
You now have a new cable modem router installed.
You have wireless connection from said modem router to the iMac.
The TC is plugged into the cable modem by ethernet and bridged.
You are using Snow Leopard on the computer?? With v5.5.3 utility.
There is one change I would like you to make if the above is correct.
I want you to turn on wireless in the TC.. create a wireless network.
Lets keep everything simple.. call the wireless TC24ghz and setup a different name for 5ghz called TC5ghz.
Set it with wpa2 personal security. A pure alphanumeric password of 8-20 characters.
Then change the iMac to connect to the TC wireless, pick the best one, ie what is the fastest. 5ghz is always better speed if you can get reasonable signal. hold down the option key when you click the airport fan so you can see the details.
If the transmit rate is 150 or more stick with 5ghz.. otherwise select 2.4ghz signal.
Here is the screenshots for setting up wireless.
Click on the wireless network options.
Sorry the names are mixed up from old screenshots.. but that should help you.
Connecting directly to the TC seems to help the computer.. and Time Machine, locate the disk and especially if 5ghz gives you good speed then the backup will work much better than via the main cable modem.

  • [solved] (how) can I use my laptop as a router for other computers?

First of all, I have to admit that I do not know too much about networking. Just enough to make the simple things work properly.
I have a laptop, which accesses the internet by wireless lan. The router is in my downstairs office. So far so, good, I have a media computer (both running Arch) in my room upstairs, intended to watch dvds or internet tv on the tv screen.
Connecting this computer to the downstairs-router by cable is not possible. Now I wondered, if I really needed to buy a wlan-card (any suggestions which one works well with linux?) or if there might be an (easy) solution using my laptop as (sort of) a router, connecting them by cable and establishing a lan connection between both of them.
Is it possible, to get internet access on the media computer that way, without to much effort? And what do I need to do to get it working?

Well, I tried to set it up to day, realizing that it is probably not as easy as it appears to be.
I did everything according to the wiki but from the laptop I can access either the internet OR the other computer, but not both at the same time. It seems to depend on which network profile I activate first.
If I first activate and configure the ethernet card, I can acces the other computer (I tried ping and ssh), but if I then start the wlan profile I cannot access the internet on the laptop. If I start the internet profile first and then configure the ethernet card, I cannot ping the media pc anymore.
I'm not sure what could be wrong, as I just did everything according to the wiki entry. Ideas?

  • Establishing Airport network on top of existing router

I'm trying to add my AEBS and Time Capsule in an extended network on top of an existing network consisting of a Linksys router connecting to the modem. I can connect the AEBS to an ethernet port of the Linksys and it works fine in "bridge" mode. However, when I try to get the TC to extend the signal from the AEBS I get the message "this network can't be extended". I have enabled "let this network be extended" on the AEBS. I think it must have something to do with which router is issuing DHCP addresses. Any ideas? What is bridge mode and is there a better option for this setup?

If the AEBS is the device connected to the Linksys router, the AEBS must be set to "bridge mode"
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet icon > Connection Sharing = "Off (Bridge Mode).
Then click the Wireless tab and make sure that you have the Wireless Mode for the AEBS set to "Create a wireless network" and there must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to the extended"
On the TC, click the Wireless tab. Wireless Mode..set to Extend a wireless network"
Wireless network name, security and password must exactly match the network that the AEBS is creating.
Post back if you need more details, but these are the key elements.

  • Windows 7 Laptop Shuts down router when using HomeGroup

I just installed Windows 7 over the weekend on all my PCs (two desktops, one laptop).  When I bootup the laptop and connect wirelessly, all connectivity ceases (wired and wireless).  When I turn the laptop off, connectivity is restored.
Windows 7 has a new feature called "HomeGroups".  HomeGroups uses IPv6.  If I disable HomeGroups on the laptop (turned the Services off that run HomeGroups) then I no longer have connectivity issues.
Could the router be the issue?  I have a WRT110.
    Thank you.

Windows 7 and HomeGroups use IPv6. Does the WRT110 support IPv6?
I don't get an error message because HomeGroup is completely shutting down the router.  As soon as I turned off HomeGroup (the services that are responsible for HomeGroup) the problem goes away.
