Connecting Laptop to WRT54G

I have the WRT54G installed on my Desktop.   I just reformatted my hard drive on my Dell Inspiron and installed XP.  I for the life of me can't figure out how to get the laptop to reconize my network, or find my network or anything.  How do i setup the laptop to work?
Thanks,

  • Trouble Connecting Laptop to WRT54GS

this happens every time the power goes out. last time. i somehow managed to reconnect, but this time i have no idea what to do! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! i went into the connection properties and changed my IP address and located the network to put in the WEP key. it did nothing... what should i do?

    Hey there, ilumtli!
You says you've changed the IP Settings of your computer? You don't need to do that actually. I need to have your answers for these questions I have in mind.
    1. What is the version number of your router, you could find it at the bottom part of the device and it's usually located beside the model #; ex. WRT54GS v6. 2. Aside from this wireless computer of yours which is not working, do you have a computer which is physically connected to the router? If there is, is it able to get online?

  • Error mesages when attempting to connect laptop to WRT54GS v.4 router

When I try to hook up my laptop (Dell Inspirion) to my network, the icon in the tray says it's connected.  When I try to open IE I get a won't connect message.  When I run network diagnostics, I get an error message (112029) stating that my proxy can't be reached automatically.  Does this mean I should enter the settings for the laptop adapter manually?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My network is secured and my laptop is hooked up to the proper network.  I have tried everything.  I've undid the power cords from the modem and the router; I've changed the settings into every possible configuration.  (Or maybe not.)  Until I retired I was in Quality Assurance at Intuit, so I'm pretty proficient.  Any additional help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Connecting laptop to existing router connection

I'm trying to connect my laptop to an existing linksys wrt54g connection.  I can get a good connection, and am able to successfully input my network key, but cannot get the internet to connect.  Trying to connect to a wpa2 connection, laptop has windows xp and service pack 3.  Any suggestion?

If it shows connected ..... then check what is the Error message you are getting while connecting to the network ......

  • Intermittment connection problems using WRT54GS in a mixed env

I got a Wireless Router for Xmas and its been a pain ever since. Basically, the internet conection drops frequently with no obvious pattern. My setup is a Speedstream ( DSL ) modem connected to a WRT54GS V7 router supporting 2 Windows XP ( wired ) desktops and an Apple ( wireless ) laptop.
I've spent several chat sessions with Linksys tier 1 support and have changed many options and then finallly they agreed to give me a new router. The new one is still dropping 2 or 3 times a day which always require a power reset to enable the network..
Any ideas ?     I really dont want to go back to a completely wired configuration but will if this isn't resolved soon...

Update firmware to latest version. Hard reset router for 1 minute. Set all settings again. Also set MTU to 1300.

  • Losing Connection with both WRT54G & WRT160N

Problem In Short: My connection is going in and out randomly. One desktop, two laptops connected wirelessly. Same problem on Xbox360. I've been having problems for the last 2 months or so. My connection will randomly hang or go out completely and then come back. The timing will differ each time - sometimes every few minutes, others every hour or so. It started happening with my WRT54G. First, I thought it might have been my modem. Comcast replaced it with a brand new one - still had the same problem. Figured it would have to been the router, and considering it was already pretty old, I went out and bought the WRT160N. Installed everything accordingly, and STILL had the same problem. I lost count of how many times I've called Linksys. Tried power-cycling, tried changing router settings such as radioband, channel, Beacon Interval, MTU, etc.. and still nothing. I have one Dell Desktop connected to the Router, and then two laptops connected to the network wireless. I also have my Xbox360 connected to the network as well. I have the same problem during online games, everything will start out fine but a few minutes in it will either start lagging or lose the connection completely.
ETA: Could it be a problem with the new version of Utorrent (1.7.7)? Any help would be appreciated. Message Edited by SM26 on 05-09-2008 11:06 AM

I also have a connection problem with WRT54G v7 running the latest firmware.
Here's what happens: Seems like a rather serious bug in the firmware causes a watchdog bite.

Don't know if this is what happens to your box but if it does there's propably nothing you can do about it, besides trying a different firmware.

  • Trying to connect a MacBook and a Windows Laptop through WRT54G - no success

I have a MacBook and a Windows XP Laptop and try to connect both through the WRT54G Wireless router which is connected to my DSL modem. The router serves as DHCP and allows 5 connections, using WPA as security.
I can be online with my Windows Laptop no problem, but when I try to connect with the MacBook it connects for a few minutes and then both get kicked off. The Laptop continues to show that it is connected to the wireless network, but I can't go to the internet anymore. The WLAN LED on the router stops being lit. Only way for reconnection is restarting the Router (unplug/replug).
When I go online with the MacBook ONLY through wireless or by cable to the router it gets connected, but stays online for 1-2 minutes only as well, then drops off.
The only way now for the MacBook to stay permanently online is to wire it to the DSL modem, but then I can not get online with the Windows Laptop.
I have browsed a number of online forums and tried the tips (different channel, I switched from WEP to WPA etc) but nothing has helped so far.
    please help!
    thanks, Michael

I resolved the problem !!! Apparently the MAC's had some software/firmware updates that needed to be installed. I installed the updates and am able to go on the internet wireless along with the PC's. I have not lost any connection since I downloaded and installed the updates. These updates included Airport Extreme 2007's which I think may have been the problem.

Tried install with flash drive but can't plug to router as it instructs.Tried manually but it doesn't indicate where the info for WEP etc needs to be entered.

  • Problem connecting xbox360 to wrt54g

i am trying to connect my 360 to my wireless network and have had limited success. my router is the wrt54g v4 and i am useing the xbox wireless network adapter. i have a desktop that is wired to the router and a laptop that connects wirelessly just fine. the problem on the xbox has to do with the security. when i run  "test xbox live" on the console it never gets pased the second test. i can see my network on the network list and even connect after entering the passphrase but when i run the test again in fails on the second test. on a hunch i disabled the security for the router and the 360 connected fine but i need the security. on the xbox website someone suggested that i change the security to wep and i did and connected fine but then my laptop couldn't connect. any help is appreciated and i thank you in advance.

Disable all firewall on the computer ....
Try this link to configure the X-BOX with the router ....

  • Problem connectiong laptop to WRT54GS

I have installed a wireless network using a WRT54GS. I have turned off the SSID broadcast for security reasons as suggested by a number of sources. Everything has worked just fine. However now when I try to connect my laptop, I get the message that there are no wirless networks in range.
I have 3 computers plus a laptop on the network. 2 desktops are wireless and one is hardwired.
Do I have to turn on the SSID broadcast to connect my laptop or am I missing something.
    Thank you for your help.

actually, once you disable the SSID broadcast, your laptop too will not be able to see it.. that is why when you try to view available wireless network, your laptop is not seeing any wireless network in range.
I would suggest you to leave the SSID broadcast, enabled first.. once you are connected and online, that will be the best time to disable it... but it doesnt mean that when you are disabling the SSID broadcast, you will not be able to connect to it already.. We're just making this simple and automatic...
and another reason why your laptop will not be able to see any wireless network in range (normally the laptop should be able to see some wireless network name from your neighbors) is due to the wi-fi switch not being turned ON
