Connecting mac book to external display

Hi all i want to try to connect my macbook to an external display. now i think it is possible if i get a connector however i went to the apple store and there seemed to be two different cables available and im not sure which one i need...
i have tried to find a picture on the internet of the particular connection but i cant find one. where the cable leaves the monitor it is connected to a port labelled VGA... but from reading a few other comments it seems like you need to know whether it is male or female and i have no idea!

what's the connection on the display? usually, the VGA port is blue, the DVI is white.

What is the normal shut down time for the mac book pro retina display (late 2013). Mine takes around 20 secs.Is this normal or should i be worried ?

Hi I got a new mac book pro retina display of 8G ram and 256GB ssd (late 2013 model). I was trying to shut down.It was taking around 20-30 secs.Is this normal? When i say shutdown i mean , i just login and shutdown.Do nothing else. I repeated the same process for 4 or 5 times. The numbers are the same.
The boot up takes around 15 secs. Are the numbers crazy or normal.

If you want to play iTunes library content on the unit you need to enable Home Sharing on both, have them on the same network and then look for your iTunes library under the Computer icon - iTunes must be running of course.
Communications can be blocked by firewalls or security software sometimes.
To factory restore a black AppleTv2 or 3 you connect it to the computer running itunes with a USB to microUSB lead alone and start itunes.

This is not necessarily 100% correct at the current time.
As Dropbox is encouraging people to set it up for automatic uploading of photos they gradually increment your space as you load more pictures for free at the current time.
You do start with a fixed 2 GB but if you upload photos you will be awarded more free space.
You can also open a free account with Flickr - you may have some upload limits per day but you can upload pictures there.

I have Mac book 15, screen display is hazy, but works fine of external monitor. How Can I correct it??

I have Mac book 15. MAC OS X Version 10.5.8 is installed with Windows XP dual boot function.
My screen display got hazy and blurred, sometimes it is ok, but only in win xp.
I have tried it with external LCD, its worked fine, but second screen is stretching display, but showing me the same screen in MAC.
But in win XP display comes exactly on MAC book, means sometime hazy , sometimes ok.
Kindly help me???

Why won't my mac detect an external display?

I have a mac book pro - system OS X 7.3 - but when I plug my rocketfish adapter to HDMI cable to samsung TV - the TV says it gets no signal. I've done everything the experts have said about connecting with the right specific order. But my display doesn't detect any external devices nor does it show any "mirrored" button. It isn't there any more.

Trouble connecting Mac Book w\ Mt Lion to a projector.

I am trying to hook a fairly new Mac Book Pro with Mt. Lion to an external DLP projector.
I followed the manual, turned on the projector then connected to computer.
The Mac recognizes the projector, blinks the computer display then the projector shows my background picture but nothing else, not even the dock. No cursor movement seen through projector.
The only time I got a change was when I opened Keynote, went to preferences, went to Slideshow and hit 'Open Display Preferences'. In that case I get a window through the projector that is different thant the Display Preferences window shown on the screen. It is titled VGA display, show buttons for Resolution and a drop down for Rotation.
I am trying to run a Powerpoint Program with Powerpoint for Mac. Please let me know if there are any additional things I need to do to make that work on the projector. Thanks to anyone who can help.

You have mirroring disabled in the display settings.
Go into settings/display and select "arrange displays". There you will see a selection for mirroring (select it). You will also see a graphic to show the current relationship of the built-in display and the projector.
If you want to keep them separate, just remember that the projector is off to the side of your built-in display.
