Connecting Mac Pro to two (2) PCs for a print server

I would like to be able to use a PC with windows xp on it as a print server. I can get the mac's print to flash on the print server's screen, but as soon as that happens the printer dialog is stopped. What am I missing?

Yes. It is possible.
I have it at work. Internal video media and internal company LAN.
One is at 192.x.x.x. the other at company range.
Also used on XSAN for external and internal metadata. That is why there are 2 NIC's.

  • How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro,  is to arrive on Monday (1/7).  I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels.  It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk  on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program.  Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash,  is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition  with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

    I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

  • I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

  • Connect mac pro to jetdirect 600N

connect mac pro to jetdirect 600N with the second ethernet port on the mac

This is how I've connected my Mac Pro to my JetDirect 300.
In the Network preference pane set Ethernet 2 up as shown (I didn't mess with anything under 'Advanced'.
In the Sharing preference pane select Internet Sharing and select your "Share your connect from'' port and "To computers using" port. Then select the Internet Sharing check box. I think this only needs to be done if you want to share your printer with others computers over your network but I'm not 100% sure.
Print a report from you JetDirect 600 to determine it's IP address (my JetDirect 300 does this by holding the Test button on top). Go to the Print & Scan preference pane and click on the '+' to add a printer, select IP, under Protocol select 'HP Jetdirect - Socket', and then type the IP address for your JetDirect 600. If you want give it a Name. It should automatically figure out the correct driver. Then click the Add button.

  • Upgrade to mac pro from two G5's

I am currently using a G5 2.5 ghz as my main Logic computer, and an additional G5 2.0 ghz to ease the cpu burden by hosting Ivory as well as additional instances of Kontakt, EWQLSO, etc. This works fine but I would prefer to use one computer if it were powerful enough. Would an upgrade to the latest 8 core Mac Pro give me as much or more power than the two G5's?
(I'm aware of the various possibilities for combining these and other computers, but for present purposes I'm only interested in the comparison between one Mac Pro and two G5's.)

But are you saying that one will be more powerful than my current implementation of two G5's?
Well, I never used 2 dual G5's together, but with one 1.8 dual G5 I could get a max of 2 instances of Akoustik Piano along with maybe 10 other tracks. So if I had 2 dual G5's that were a little faster @ 2.0+ I would probably get about 4 or 5 Akoustik piano's along with maybe 30-40 other tracks? I just set up a test song on my 8 core 2.8 with 10 Akoustic Piano's and 40 other tracks with many plugs without the slightest problem and I could have done more. So in my humble opinion a single 8 core Mac Pro will easily out perform 2 G5's. Let me just add that the Akoustik Piano's all ganged up on one core. While all of logics instruments were evenly spread over 8 core's. So I think 10 Akoustik Piano's may be my limit. As I deleted each Akoustic Piano instance the stress on that one core went down from the red until with just one instance it was barely reading.

  • Using AP express to connect Mac Pro w/o airport card to internet

Hi, I am using an Airport Express station to connect my Mac Pro to the internet. I am doing so by having my Airport Express connected to my main Airport Extreme base station and have the Mac Pro plugged into the Airport Express' ethernet port.
Once I do this everything works fine and my Mac Pro gets really fast internet for about 5 minutes and then it cuts out completely. Nothing can get the internet working except unplugging the Airport Express and plugging it back in.
Anyone know what the problem is?
My Mac Pro doesn't have an Airport card and only needs to connect to the internet once a month for updates so it is not worth it to install one.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Correct if you want to use the Thunderbolt connector on the Mac.
The curious thing is.....the Mac can connect to the Express at up to 300 Mbps using wireless, but will be limited to 100 Mbps using the Ethernet port on the Express.
So, if you are looking for connection speed, wireless may well be much faster than the Ethernet connection.

Possibly if your company has an agreement with Apple and the machine is purchased through the company. Otherwise, no.

  • Connecting Mac Pro to Panasonic BT-LH2550 monitor for Color

    Dear All,
I am planning to have a setup to connect a Panasonic BT-LH2550 monitor with my Mac Pro to view the footage pixel-pixel for serious color grading with Color from FCP Studio.
I am wondering what kind of connection I need to have between the monitor and the Mac. In fact, do you I any extras card or connector. Someone told me that as LH2550 has DVI connection, I can just plug the monitor to the computer, but I wonder if this method is accurate enough to show the footage for color grading.
I also heard about AJA, but I really don't need any capturing. Is there any another cheaper way (yet still with good color reproduction on the monitor for color grading).
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    King

No...if you want to capture this is a good card. But get the LHi...the LHe isn't available anymore anyway. The LHi will upconvert SD to HD, and cross convert 720p to 1080i on the fly. As will the MXO2...

  • Connecting mac pro to Imac for screen share.

I have connected my mac pro to my Imac so i can use the Imac sceen. I hooked directly with a dvi cable. The Imac screen is
immediately "taken over" by the mac pro when I make the connection. My question is, is there a way to disconnect without having
    to physically unplug the connection?

  • CS4 and Mac Pro with two graphic cards: OpenGL not supported!

I have two graphic cards in my Mac Pro. If a use a dual display setup where both displays are connected to the same card, Photoshop enables OpenGL support (Preferences > Performance).
Switch both displays to the other card, also works fine.
BUT if I connect one display to the first card and the second display to the second card (so each display has its own graphic card) the Open GL support is greyed out (I can not longer use canvas display rotation for example)
This doesn't make sense to me and looks like a bug...

Are you running two of the same cards or are they different? I'm running a pair of NVidia 7300GTs with no issues...and I'm driving a pair of 30" Cinemas and an NEC 26" widescreen. I get better performance on the single 30" than on the card with the two displays. Also note that which PCI slot you are driving the cards in has an impact on their performance...something to look into.

  • Mac Pro and two Matrox TripleHead2Go

Encountered a problem that new Mac Pro does not see the two Matrox TripleHead2Go.
When I connect one card TripleHead2Go - computer determines its. Resolution on Matrox 3820x1080 50Hz
After connecting to the second card - it hangs the computer and a black screen appears on the monitor.
I connect two TripleHead2Go on different buses (Bus 1 and 2).

I disagree that your problem has anything to do with the built-in graphics cards falling short. In my opinion, you are trying to move more data to the six screens than can be transferred from the number of sources you have, in the time you want.
    Try this experiment:
Set each of the displays to mirrored (the same data on each screen). Now play ONE movie onto all six screens. If you get drop-outs, the display card is defective (or, as you assert,  inadequate.)
I believe your other experiment (with six different data streams to six different displays) is I/O bound. If you get drop-outs you need more drives in more different enclosures to provide enough concurrent data for the displays.
Another experiment to try is to run two displays. Then try three. Then four, and so on. If you study where it fails and analyze how much data is needed to support each stream, I believe you will find that the amount of data required is more than can be produced by one or two ordinary drive or SSDs.
A single ordinary rotating drive can produce a single burst at about 125 MBytes/sec, not sustainable. To supply moving pictures to six displays takes far more data than that.
A third experiment is to reduce the resolution on each display to the lowest it can achieve, and play those smaller windows. Perhaps it can play six half-sized movies.

  • Mac Pros extra two internal sata ports broken since Leopard 10.5??

I have a Mac Pro and according to xlr8yourmac.com and the newertech website, there are four sata ports for your hard drives PLUS an additional two more sata ports directly on the motherboard. Through a complicated and difficult disassembly, it is possible to dissect your mac pro and install their cable which they sell for about $30, and get at the rear of your mac pro housing connectors for these two internal sata ports. In short, it's nothing more than an extension cable that fits into a neat housing at the back of the mac pro. You can then plug up to two esata drives into those jacks and they are basically hooked into the macpro motherboard. I ordered this cable and it worked splendidly since 10.4.8 and for 10.4.9 without any issue (that I could tell). I was even able to raid them together etc etc. (edit to be clear I mean I had two Lacie 500Gb drives with esata, firewire 800, 400 and USB 2 on them).
When I installed 10.5 it was all broken!! What a disaster. I can't use these drives on the firewire bus (which by the way they work fine on) because I am already tieing up that with other devices and drives. I need these extra two buses, plus they were **** fast before- I guess it's the same bus as the internal drives get.
I have contacted Lacie - no luck - and also newertech, and did so again today, but so far no luck, and apple, no luck and even submitted a feedback request back when we were on 10.5.1 (just released at that time), and no luck. I hoped 10.5.2 would restore this functionality.
I was told Apple do not normally go out of their way to kill unintended functionality but could this be the case on this occasion?

www.xlr8yourmac.com its over my head but...
A Copy of the April 23rd, 2007 news page post is below (in reply to eSATA Extender cables (w/PCI slot bracket) from Newer Tech for use with the 2 unused ports on the Mac Pro motherboard.)
" this may be of some interest for your readers.
From the Intel 631xESB/632xESB I/O Controller Hub data sheet:
    "Hot-Plug Operation
Dynamic Hot-Plug (for example, surprise removal) is not supported by the SATA host controller. However, using the PCS register configuration bits and power management flows, a device can be powered down by software, and the port can then be powered off, allowing removal and insertion of a new device. "
(I asked if he knew of any way to do that in OS X.)
the SATA controller does support AHCI mode, which enables hot plugging (same as with the raid southbridges ICH6R - ICH8R which support hot plugging with raid drivers from Intel without Intel assuring this).
But it does not support AHCI if the PATA port is used as in the Mac Pro. And without AHCI there is no way to do hot plugging.
Using a SATA DVD drive may not mean AHCI is used automatically. The controller has to be switched from IDE to AHCI mode. Maybe the Mac Pro does it on startup or some EFI specialist can finds out how to do that.
BTW Tiger can handle an ICH8R in AHCI mode on all SATA ports without a problem.
    Kind regards,
    Martin S. "
Info/Tips on using Spare SATA Ports with Windows: (from Jan 15th, 2008 news page) This may have come up in the past and I'd forgotten it (don't own a Mac Pro yet) but in reply to a post yesterday (1/15/2008) on the Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray reader/Superdrive combo drive, a reader mentioned the spare SATA ports are not usable in Windows XP at least with the standard drivers with Bootcamp. (Most readers have used the ports in OS X although I've not searched drive db reports for anyone that mentioned using Bootcamp/Windows also. BTW - The spare ports are bootable for OS X use, as noted in this article - although drives are not shown/usable when booted from Windows with standard drivers.)
(Update) Here's a reader mail w/tips on using the spare ports with Windows via a replacement chipset driver install and grub bootloader edit:
" after finding this thread in the onmac forums I finally was able to get my pioneer sata drive to work under bootcamp. Basically you have to do the following:
    - Install Win XP and ubuntu linux with a pata dvd drive in XP, change the ide 2680 driver to the intel ahci driver found here (downloadcenter.intel.com) S5000 Based Server AHCI SATA Storage Driver for Windows.
    - Boot into ubuntu and change the stage1 file of the grub bootloader to this:
    http://www.olofsson.info/grub/stage1
This keeps the mac pro in ahci mode when booting a foreign OS
Now you can boot windows using the linux partition, this will start grub and keep the mac pro in the correct mode
I also installed Refit to make things a little easier but as far as i know using Alt key when booting should work too.
if anyone tries this and has any questions feel free to ask
    -Forrest"

  • Connecting Mac pro and iPad - same account different addresses

I have been reading the posts here and am a little confused about FaceTime setup.
I have an iPad with FT preinstalled. My Mac pro at home should be able to handle FT as should my MacBook pro. I understand that I can buy FT from the app store and it will work on all machines with my mac.com account.
Where the confusion comes in is people outside my account. If I am away from home with my iPad and/or laptop, will I be able to FT with someone at home? Since the home computer is registered to my Mac.com account along with my iPad, I know I cant connect to the home machine using the same account/email.
Can my wife or kids use FaceTime on my home computer with their own accounts to send or receive facetime calls from me when I am traveling? If I set up a separate user account for them on my machine will they have to buy their own copy of FT to access it (since activation seems to be tied to a .mac account) If they use their email while logged into my account, can I change the ft address on that computer back to mine when I get home?
this new app store activation process has me confused already, and the additional address need for FaceTime complicates the process even further. Any clarification on how this works and the possible limitations would be appreciated.

Just to be clear. There is no FireWire connection for the iPad.
To connect the iPad to your Mac use the cable that came with the iPad. Plug one end into the iPad and the other into your Mac.
Now, keep in mind that the iPad requires USB 2.0 on your Mac.
Also to transfer files you need iTunes 10.7 or 11.0.2 which is the latest.
iTunes 10.7 or 11.0.2 on your Mac requires OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or later.
Make sure your Mac meets the system and iTunes requirements before proceeding.
So start iTunes on your Mac. If it is iTunes 11.0.2 use the View menu in iTunes to view Sidebar.
    Then connect the iPad.
You will not see the iPad listed like a hard drive on your Mac. It will show up in the Sidebar of iTunes.
Finally, does your daughter sync her iPad to another computer? If so use that computer to add the movie to her iPad. Connecting her iPad through iTunes to your computer and syncing to add the Movie will cause all photos, music, etc. that were synced from your daughters computer to be deleted.

  • Connecting Mac Pro with GeForce GT120 to monitor and TV at same time

Hi - I just want to know in advance of buying the latest 8 core Mac Pro with a single NVIDIA GeForce GT120 graphics card, will this connect to both my apple cinema display 20'' and my Panasonic Viera LCD TV's 'PC Input' at the same time?
From what I can tell this graphics card has a small output port and a wider one - am I right in thinking the smaller one is a mini-display port which would connect to my TV's 'pc input' and the other is DVI which connects to the Apple cinema display? --- is the 'mini display port' something that connects directly into thr TV or is an adaptor required?
    Thanks for reading!

The PC input is most likely VGA. A standard (old, but still common) connection port for most laptops (which is the primary usage). If you had a desktop, you would probably connect through DVI to HDMI.
You need a DVI to VGA adapter. Also check if you need male or female, as you might need an VGA adapter, plus VGA cord.
This adapter usually comes with all Mac Pros:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A?mco=NDcyMDY3OA
Then you just need to buy a long VGA cord.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812105805
Again double check the if you need male/male or male/female, etc.
