Connecting Mac to Windows

I don't know if I am posting this in the right forum, so if I am not direct me to the right forum so I can get some help.
I go to boarding school, and have a Macbook. At home I have a windows computer with XP Home Edition. Since it has Home Edition, it doesn't come with the remote desktop program. What I am looking to do is be able to get onto my Mac at school, and use a program that will let me connect to my computer at home, and look at the screen, and control the mouse and use it so that i can use some windows programs that I don't have on my mac.
I downloaded the free windows program for mac that will let me connect to another computer, but when I tried to do it all how I was suppose to it didn't work. I have tried to use some programs and figure things out, but it has been difficult.
So what I am looking for is a solution to this problem. Free programs would be the best, I am not looking to do anything intense on the computer at home, basically I want to be able to browse the web and use some simple programs on my desktop at home.
All help is appreciated, and instructions on how to set up would help too.
Thank you for your help. :]

I guess I didn't word everything right but I know all about VNC, and I am looking for a free VNC program that can go on my Windows computer that will let me connect to it from my Mac. I couldn't tell you if it is blocked or not, but the only way to find out is to actucally test it all.
So do you have any programs you can suggest Dave or anyone else?

  • Vpn software for connecting mac from windows

Is there VPN software availbale which I can use in windows system to connect to a mac system?

Is this for a corporate environment? I would check with your work's I.T. Dept. and find out what they are using as their VPN Server application; my employer uses Checkpoint and in the case of Checkpoint, I know that they made a free Tiger-compatible VPN client for users in addition to a Windows-compatible client that works with their enterprise-class VPN server product; I would imagine that most VPN server vendors would at least have a complementing Windows-compatible client product.
I know that Equinux makes a "third-party" VPN client called VPN Tracker for Mac platforms, that purportedly interoperates with a great number of VPN server products and fills the void where the server houses have not bothered to support Mac clients -- from prior experience I know for a fact that it worked great with one flavor of Checkpoint server, but I don't know if they make a Windows version or not. Check out equinux.com for more info on that product.

  • Can't connect Mac to Windows network drive

I am the only Mac in a PC college. I frequently have to connect to shared folders on the PC network. For six months I could "connect to server... cifs://name" with no problems. Last month, this suddenly stopped working (error = server may not exist). My office IT people told me to switch to smb://name and it worked again for at least a day. Now I can't get it to connect at all. The finder can see the PC server in the shared pane, but it won't connect to it. "Connect to server" won't connect either, no matter how I try. I get the "server may not exist" error, the "volume won't mount" error, or the "not all data is readable" error. The local IT people say they haven't changed anything and all the Windows people are fine. As the lone Mac user, I don't think much help is forthcoming from IT here. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I do not know if the problem coincides with the update to 10.5.6 or not.

    Karen –
Unfortunately I think that 10.5.6 broke several aspects of MS Windows support. If you were to GOOGLE ‘can’t connect to windows shares with os x 10.5.6’ you will find plenty. I personally have not upgraded to 10.5.6 because of it. Though not the best method you may want to consider using the IP address of the system you are connecting to.
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/<share name>
Obviously I know that this is easier than said especially if you are the only Mac on the network, I am sure the College IT group is just going to fall on their swords to help you with this or even providing you this information. With that said you may be able to get the IP by trying to ‘PING’ the server’s name. To do this open a Terminal session on your Mac and type the following at the prompt:
    ping <server name>
You should get a something like this:
    PING <server name> (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 56 data bytes
Now let me caution you, I am sure that the college has turned of PING reply on their network you will most likely get the line above and that is it. Also depending how aggressively they monitor their network for such activities you may show up on some report. Given that I would suggest that if possible you find someone in the IT group that is somewhat sympathetic to your problem and let them know what you are attempting to do.
Not the best answer but I know that using the IP instead of the server name seems to work.
    Best of luck.

  • Connecting mac to windows printer

i just bought a router and i have the internet working right on it now i need my computers to be able to print on my windows xp computer.
My comp is a MAC and it wont print on my windows xp computer i know i have the printer in the network files because my other computer which is xp prints fine. IS it even prossible to print from a mac to a windows computer if so then how.

It is possible. You simply have to configure the printer on the Mac. I suggest you take a look into the help file of the Mac. You'll find pretty much everything there including many step-by-step instructions.
Beyond that, I suggest you ask in a Mac support forum. This is a Linksys forum and it deals with router problems. But your problem is a simple Mac setup problem and has nothing to do with the router.

  • Firefox no longer connects to internet on my mac, and windows machines, after v18. I've tried several solutions from Mozilla support and nothing works. Firefox

Firefox no longer connects to internet on my mac, and windows machines, after v18. I've tried several solutions from Mozilla support and nothing works. Firefox can't even connect to Mozilla for updates. Firefox just sits on the default search page and attempts to connect to websites by typing URLs, or by clicking on the links on the default search page don't work.

    You could try the following:
    * Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
    * Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet.

  • Unable to connect to my home PC from my home Mac using Windows Remote Desktop

i have downloaded from the Microsoft website and also the Application from the App store and both fail to connect. i have connected to my PC using the migration assistant so they are able to recognise each other.
    on the Mac:
    - downloaded the app and also done the download from MS website - both fail and suggest to check that remote access is enabled.
    on the PC:
    - have my Ipaddress from "IPConfig"
    - have enabled remote access through windows firewall
The PC is on and has a password enabled
    Error on App:
"Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify remote desktop is enabled, the remote pc is turned on and available on the network and try again"
both are connected to the internet and on the same home network. Can anyone please advise to any additional steps as this seems as though this should be really straightforward. as another note i don't have another firewall software interrupting - am just
using windows firewall until i can get this working.

  • Can I connect Mac mini to Windows laptop?

I would like to connect Mac Mini to HP windows 7 Laptop as to use
the laptop as keyboard and monitor instead of connecting to TV and using

Is this straight forward to do? does it need some workaround? or is it impossible?

Hi, you'd have to setup Screen Sharing on the Mini first it's like Remote Desktop on PCs.

  • Connect mac mini to internet via windows phone

hallo, how can i connect Mac mini to internet via my Windows Phone?

You are going to have to buy an external modem.  They make ones that plug into the USB.  Apple does not make one so you will have to buy a 3rd party modem.  I would read the reviews before making the purchase to make sure you buy one that someone has tested with a mac.

  • Connection key compatibility problem between Mac and Windows

I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem and came up with a work-around?
We are rolling out Contribute CS5 to some employees.
The designers (I'm one of them) are all on Macs. Everyone else is on Windows XP.
We are connecting to our sites via local/network. IT didn't want to set up FTP (I won't go into why right now).
So, here is where the problem is... We set up the site and do the first connection on our Macs. Then when we send out a site key, to a Windows user, the key is no good. This is because Macs handle paths to network shares differently than Windows does.
I thought the solution would be to customize the key with the Windows share path before sending it to the Windows users. However, Contribute wants to verify the path before letting me continute to make a customized key. And that is where I'm stuck. Is there a solution to this - besides switching to FTP?
    Thanks,
    Ward

For windows users can you create a connection key in Windows machine and send the same.

  • Mac app can't connect to a windows network drive

    loadMovie("\\\\corpflash01\\WebContent\\swf\\jkLowerRight.swf",
    portfolio_mc);
    or this
    loadMovie("//corpflash01/WebContent/swf/jkLowerRight.swf",
    portfolio_mc);
works correctly on any window's machine inside my company's
network but only when I export to a windows exe.
When I export to a mac app, and run it on a mac, I can't
locate these swfs on the network.
Is there something special I have to do to get a mac to be
able to read swfs off a network drive?
    Thanks!

*HELLO I WILL USE BOLD BELOW TO MAKE MY COMMENTS*
OK you will have to some simple things.
    1. Find a third party time Time Server that you can use both on your Mac and Windows 7. I say this because of both modern sharing systems use kerberos. If you don't want to do that (or don't know how) just make sure both the you Mac and the Windows 7 machine are set to get their Time Clock updates automatically from an internet Time sever.
*BOTH COMPUTERS ARE ON THE AUTOMATICALLY INTERNET SERVER*
    2. Read the article File Sharing: Win 7 and Snow Leopard: Introduction.
*READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE AND DID EVERY SINGLE STEP AND WHEN I INPUT THE IP ADRESS I CLICK CONNECT AND IT DOES NOT CONNECT, SAME DIALOG BOX SAYING. EVERYONE ELSE IN MY OFFICE IS USING WINDOS AND CAN CONNECT WITH NO PROBLEM*
    3. If you want to use the Finder toolbar Network pane automatically then read the Apple discussion Snow Leopard 10.6.4 not showing Windows 7 Machines on Finder's Shared.
*I DID FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS LISTED HERE WITH THE SAME RESULT. I CANT CONNECT.*
With this information you shouldn't have trouble sharing files with a Windows 7 machine.

  • Firewire connection: Mac OS X (macbook pro) and Windows 7 (hp dv65540)

I have bought firewire 9-4 pin, and I connected both computers. But neither Mac nor Windows 7 are not visible to each other.I think it should work on the principle plug&play.
I know that with writting files from mac os X there are some special conditions, but for just reading it should be rady just after plugin, or??
    PLEASE HELP!

You can certainly network Macs with firewire. Once connected, the other computer would show up as an available server. You must have file sharing enabled. As far as connecting to a PC, I don't know. A quick search turned up this page:
    http://www.weethet.nl/english/network_firewire.php
It says that you need Windows XP, ME, or 2000.
