Connecting Macbook Pro to a Windows 7 USB Printer

I am trying to connect a Macbook Pro running the current version of Mountain Lion - 10.8.2 -  to a Canon MG8150 multifunction printer which is connected via USB port to a desktop running Windows 7.  I cannot add this printer via the Windows workgroup, even though I can see it - I always get an error message: "Unable to communicate with the printer at this time."
File sharing is turned on and working - I can copy files in both directions between the Windows 7 PC and the Mac.  Printer sharing is turned on and the printer share name has been set to CanonMG8150 - and I see this name in the Mac Add Printer dialogue.
I tried turning on LPD on the Windows machine and adding the printer as an LPD printer, but get the same error message.
Any clues?

update: Canon do not appear to support the MG8150 on Mountain Lion - they list the MG8250 but not the MG8150.  I guess I could try the MG8250 driver, but I am not sure how to obtain the driver from software update without installing the printer, which I do not have!
They do support the MG8150. It is the same driver they supply to Apple for download via Software Update. But as I mentioned before, you cannot use this driver when shared by Windows.
And don't use the MG8250 to print to the MG8150. The output will be correct. So as mentioned above, use the MG8100 Gutenprint driver.

  • Printing from a MacBook Pro to a Windows XP shared printer

I have a desktop Windows XP pc with a shared HP PhotoSmart 7760 printer connected via USB and a Vista laptop. They connects to the internet via a wireless router. I recently added 2 MacBook Pros and an AirPort base to access the internet with the Mac's. The pc's can "see" each other and print. The Macs cannot see the pc's and the printer.
What I believe is happening is that although the Mac's and pc's use the same cable to get to the internet, they are on separate wireless networks and, thus, cannot see each other. Before I start experimenting too much, I hope to get another opinion as to what could be happening? Can I set the Mac's to use the pc wireless router putting them on the same network? Then would the Mac's see the printer?

    Hi pmackins,
    Welcome to the forum.

Based on the above, my assumption is that the Printer is connected to the XP PC. The following may help:

  • MacBook Pro Crashes due to a USB Printer?

You heard it right. So I needed to print something out over a friend's apartment and one girl had a printer connection via USB. So I thought since Macs are usually "plug and play" to plug in and go. The printer was a Canon Pixma iP3000. Well the program didn't like it so I had to force quit, but the printer window stayed. BTW my Macbook was purchased in June 2009.
After going to the Apple icon and restarting did my "fun" begin. The gray load screen just didn't stop.
    From there I did:
    1. Manual Restart
    2. Static Restart
    3. Safe Mode
    4. PRAM Reset
    5. Booting From my Snow Leopard OS X disk.
    6. Repairing the Disk via Disk Utility.
Nothing worked and all this trouble from plugging in a printer.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

...but I've read quit a few remarks on Snow Leopard slowing down or negatively affecting their MBPs.
And in practically every case, the ill effects are probably traceable to the presence on those machines of third-party software that needs to be updated for compatibility with Snow Leopard. Just as your trouble was probably caused by a printer driver that wasn't compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Macbook pro running 10.7.5 Lion printer HP photosmart 7960 . connected direct by USB.

My macbook pro will suddenly not recognise my printer that I have been using for 3 yrs every thing in connection with the printer is greyed out and disabled . I have been into system information and cannot find it there
It is connected direct with a USB.
When I connect it to my sons Macbook it shows up but says printer not connected even when it is. I have tried all suggestions but nothing works.
a coulpe of times I have had a message on my screen telling me that my macbook is pulling to much power from a USB connection even though only the printer is connected.
    Many thanks
    Edward.

    Hi @edwartd
The message about your Mac book pulling too much power from a USB connection, might be related to the printer.
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector
In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector
^ This is not limited to Laserjet printers.
If the printer is not in a wall outlet, it might pull power through the USB port to compensate.
With regards to the inability to print right now, I suggest we reset the printing system, repair disk permissions, re-add the printer using the right driver, and try to print again.
Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
    Reset Printing System
Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
    Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer
Reconnect the USB cable, and when you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver.
Select Add other Printer or Scanner
Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can select the printer driver
I look forward to hearing from you.

  • MacBook Pro Core i7 + Windows 7 Bootcamp issues

I recently bought a brand new MacBook Pro Core i7 2.66Ghz with 8GB Ram and 500GB 7200rpm HD and Hi-Res display.
When I received it, I updated all Mac OS X software via software update.
I then created a 70GB Bootcamp partition to install a new full copy of Window 7 Ultimate.
I started with the 64bit version of Win 7, but as has been noted here there are some issues with the driver packages and even after managing to get the 64bit version of the Bootcamp 3.1 driver package update to install in Windows (having first installed Bootcamp 3.0 drivers), the wireless driver would not install or work, nor would the NVidia driver, so I had a very odd display aspect and low res support. There may well have been other drivers not working either, but these two really stood out.
Despite the Bootcamp 3.1 driver package apparently being installed (as reported by "About Bootcamp", the 3.1 package was still being offered to me in Apple Software Update. I tried to install again, and again it still showed as being available to install. Obviously some issue's here.
So I decided to try the Windows 7 32bit edition instead, as I don't necessarily need the 64bit version to run the Windows apps I need.
I deleted the Bootcamp partition and started again. I ended up in the exact same situation with Windows 7 32bit as I had done with Windows 7 64bit - wireless device without a driver, NVidia drivers not installed. This time I had used the Bootcamp 32bit driver packages.
In the end I've opted to just install it via VMware as a pure virtual machine. This works fine, but for what I do in Windows, I prefer to have a Bootcamp setup.
Is there a general issue with the new MacBook Pro's and Windows 7 despite Apple releasing updated driver packages? Do these new driver packages handle the dual GPU setup properly?
I have read a number of "How to's..." for installing Windows 7 on the a MacBook Pro, but none have been successful for me. Am I wasting my time for now and need to wait for Apple to update Bootcamp for the 2010 MacBook Pro's, or am I just missing something in the way I'm doing this? I can't believe it shouldn't be this hard?

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my brand new 15" MBP right now.
The only problem I'm having is the USB controller issue that is reported in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2411685&start=30&tstart=0
I ran the Boot Camp assistant, made the partition, rebooted with my 7 DVD, formatted the partition, performed a clean installation, & then installed the drivers from the OSX DVD when Windows booted the first time.
Replaced the NVIDIA drivers with the latest Verde release. 258.96notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
Everything seems to be running just fine at this point.

Having the exact same problem with connecting ML and Snow Leopard machines to a Windows 8.1 machine. Oddly enough, connecting and copying to/from works perfectly from a Mavericks machine, despite the problems reported about Mavericks regarding the exact opposite. An old thread, but did you find a solution?

  • HT201180 What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

USB is the slowest. Firewire is faster. eSata is the fastest (and will be superceded by Thunderbolt).  The old Fire was 4 pin (Firewire 400 and is essentially obsolete), new is 9 pin, Firewire 800.  All of the will transmit data, simply a different speeds.
For eSata connectivity, you MBP must have an express card slot (and the appropriate eSata connection card) and you external enclosure must have an eSata input.  eSata cables will only transmit data, therefor it will require power by Firewire or USB cables.
    Ciao.

  • Retina Macbook Pro 13" on Windows 8 Wifi Stops Receiving Data

    Hello!
I am running a Retina Macbook Pro 13" with Windows 8 Bootcamp. Recently I have discovered that my laptop internet stops working. When I boot it up in windows I will be able to use the internet for an average of around 30 seconds before it stops loading pages but it is still connected to the network. The only way I can actually use the internet is if I keep reconnnecting to my WiFi network every minute or so.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

I'm having a similar issue on my brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Internet seems to run fine on my windows side, but when I bootcamp into Windows 7, using my ethernet adapter, downloads seem to only get between 80mb-200mb done before it just stops, and I have to restart. I can browse the internet completely fine (and quickly) but downloading large files seems to cause an issue.
I had to download a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver to get the adapter to work, and I'm wondering if perhaps I have the wrong driver? It's weird that it works though....I also downloaded 7.5GB of Team Fortress 2 seemingly fine the first night, but I think thats because Steam is able to force a reconnect even if it stops working.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

    Hello there Jake,
It sounds like your phone is acting like you are connecting and disconnecing it over and over again even with another USB cable. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you determine what the issue might be.
    iTunes: Resolve USB-related alerts
See if the cable connection at the device or computer has come loose or unplugged.
Unplug the cable you're using to connect your iOS device from the USB port on your computer, and then reconnect it. Then unplug it from your iOS device, and reconnect it.
Remove any third-party battery packs or cases from the device and ensure that the USB cable is connected directly to the port on the device.
If your Lightning or 30-pin cable is connected to a keyboard, display or USB hub, try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer instead.
Close any virtualization apps (such as Parallels or VMWare).
These apps may interfere with your computer's ability to communicate over USB if they aren't properly configured, or up to date. If this resolves the issue, contact the developer of the app to see if an update is available.
    Restart your computer.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
If your iOS device displays the Connect to iTunes screen, reset your device and then restore it.
If you're using an accessory or third-party cable to connect your device, try using an Apple cable with the device instead.
Update to the latest version of iTunes if you haven't already.
Disconnect other USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then, reconnect your iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect the other USB devices one at a time. Make sure your iOS device is still recognized by the computer after adding back each device.
If one of these steps resolves the issue, but it comes back later, make sure you haven't changed how the device is connected. For example, check to see if you plugged the device into a specific accessory, or used a specific cable that reintroduced the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro with my Windows 8.1 desktop.  The MacBook sees the desktop but denies me access. The Desktop does not see my MacBook Pro. I would like to connect so I can see files I have on the desktop.

However, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1720 mentions that the late 2011 MacBook Pro supports Windows 8/8.1.
    not really
his download contains the Windows Support Software (Windows Drivers) you need to support 64 bit versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on your Mac.
this bit state that the zip file in question have drivers for both windows7 8 and 8.1
so the fact that the mac is listed does not imply that it support all 3
