Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR9 - No sound through TV

I recently bought a Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR9. I have it hooked up to my MacBook using an HDMI to DVI connection. But, I'm not getting sound through the TV. So, I bought a 3.5mm to RCA (one red, one white connection) cable. I've plugged the red and white connections into all of the red/white ports on the back of the tv but I'm still not getting sound out of the tv.
Can someone please help me with this setup?
Thanks!!

Does your Bravia also have red and white input jacks on the side of the TV (my Bravia does, on the left). On my Bravia, those are the only audio inputs that are active for all inputs, and they are what I use when I am playing my MB through HDMI (which, as you found, only transmits video).

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia via DVI-HDMI!

Hi I am having major issues with my Macbook connecting to my Sony Bravia KDL-32V4000 I now have 2 different DVI-HDMI leads as well as the Apple Mini-DVI-DVI and still have absolutely no luck.
The Macbook is picking up the Television absolutely no bother at all but there is just nothing at all coming up on the Television its self it doesn't even recognise that I have the computer in the HDMI slot nothing at all just blank!
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it will save me buying more and more cables if this fails to work will have to go with the DVI-VGA I guess would rather fix this though!
    Thanks!

I bought a mini-DVI to HDMI and an HDMI to HDMI cable. Once I went into settings for the display, I found that the TV was acting as a second monitor and that it was off to the right of the macbooks own screen. Thus if i moved the mouse to the right it could control the second monitor. You are able to move the screens so that they have the same data on each or use them as two screen with different info on each. Each screen is clearly visible in Spaces and it works a treat.
It is also possible to use the TV as the only screen. The way to do this is to connect up and close the lid on the mac. Once the light on the front starts blinking you can wake it up by using your mighty mouse or external keyboard. once awake, assuming you have chosen the correct HDMI connection from the TV the TV will act as the only monitor at full resolution.
The problem I have, is that I have not been able to get the sound to work. I have used the earphone socket and connected that to external speakers as I cannot seem to get the analogue signal on the TV on anything but an AV channel (not an HDMI channel). Thus the sound works on one channel and the image on another. My TV is a Sony KDL40w5710 - thus if anyone know the solution to getting the sound running through an HDMI channel on my TV it would be appreciated if you could contribute.
    Cheers

  • Connect Macbook to Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI?

I am trying to connect my Macbook to a Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI, but are unable to get one to recognize the other. I am not sure what the problem is.
I have the following set up:
    - Macbook 13" (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2, 10.4.11)
    - Apple Mini DVI to DVI adopter
    - 15' DVI to HDMI cable (from monoprice.com, same cable recommended elsewhere in these forums)
    - Sony Bravia KDL46W3000, (Full HD 1920 x 1080 p)
The Sony tv does not seem to recognise the Mac is connected (and/or vise versa). The screen is just black. Yes, I have tried all 3 of the HDMI inputs on it, Yes, I have set the tv input setting to match the corresponding input jack. HDMI does work on the tv though, as I have a DVD player connected via HDMI and that works fine.
The Mac Display preference pane does not detect the tv/monitor being connected. I normally use another external LCD monitor with the Macbook via mini DVI to VGA adaptor without any problem. I have tried various solutions others have mentioned for similar problems I found in these forms, such as turning the tv off then on, rebooting the Macbook before connecting, etc. and every other combination.
An hour on the phone with Sony tech support did not get me anywhere closer other than they say the Mac should recognize the tv as an external monitor.
Has anyone with a very similar configuration managed to get this to work? Please note, I am well aware that many many people use HDTV's as a external monitor, but this is a Sony Bravia, not a LG, or Samsung, or anything else. Also, it is a Macbook, not a Powerbook or anything else. Also, I am trying to connect via HDMI, and not VGA.
Any tips or success stories would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I hooked my Sony .Bravia 40" up to my MacBook with no problem. From your description, it sounds like you may also have a bad DVI->HDMI cable. I'm using the stock Apple miniDVI adaptor mated to my DVI->HDMI cable.
I was going to go the route you took and use the VGA port on my Bravia, but thought it might limit me to "side" letterboxes since I thought VGA basically stood for 640x480 or 4X3 format. I'm surprised that you get 1920x1080 from a VGA cable. While your picture may be great, by definition I understand high to low video quality in order is...
HDMI/DVI, Component, s-video, VGA, and lastly, A/V cables.
My DVI->HDMI cable is a cheapie that I think I bought at Frys. This type of cable is probably getting harder to find as most stuff is straight HDMI now. Anyone thinking of getting a new flat screen should strongly remember to get one with at least 3 HDMI ports unless they are into cable switch-a-roo when connecting various devices. The stock devices today are cable/satellite, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/DVD and one for the old Mac.

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia LCD tv

I really want to connect my MacBook to our tv to play region 1 dvd's and videos I've bought in iTunes. At the Apple Store they sold me 3 cables, 1 Mini-DVI to DVI connector, 1 DVI to HDMI cable and a cable for sound.
I've got these both hooked up to my tv but I can't get both sound and picture to show up. I have to choose between either the HDMI input or the AV (sound) input. Does anyone know how I can get them both?

I am trying to do the same . Connecting Mac Book to Sony Bravia. the audio is working fine but no display. After connecting the DVI - VGA adapter the mac screens blinks for a sec or so but then no display on the tv. The apples store sales person told me its plug & play as simple as that.
Pls help with some troubleshooting !

  • Connecting Macbook to Sony Bravia 32" - Won't fill screen and not clear

I just picked up a Mini-DVI > DVI and DVI > HDMI cord today from my local Apple Store and hooked up my Macbook to my new Sony Bravia 32" HDTV. Unfortunately, I having some problems setting it up. My issues are:
    - I'm not sure how to make my TV the MAIN and ONLY display. I'd like to play games like WoW and watch movies from iTunes on it with the best possible quality and resolution.
    - When connected, the image doesn't fill the whole TV perfectly. It either gets cut off or has black borders. Using the TV's zoom fuction just distorts the image further and possibly cuts off the edges.
    - The quality is less than what I was hoping for. Text is hard to read and pixilated and images just don't look that great. I suspect this might be because it's not filling the whole screen but I am unsure.
I'd really appreciate detailed instructions on how to deal with the software side of this since my connection is fine.

Here is a link that should answer your second question about making the TV the sole display:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
As for the screen quality issue, does your TV's manual mention anything about making a computer connection? Does it say to use the VGA port or is HDMI supported for computer use? Also, do you know the TV's native resolution? If it is a 1366 x 768 native panel in the TV, then don't run it at 1920 x 1080 interlaced. That's too high. It will look best if run at it's natvie resolution.
As for the picture being either too big or too small, that is called overscan. Many newer Sony's have a setting called "Full" under the Wide Mode setting that gets rid of overscan.

  • Connecting Macbook to sony Bravia TV

Ok not exactly the most computer savvy but I am currently trying to connect my Macbook to my Bravia TV. I have a Mini DVI to DVI cable then a DVI to HDMI cable connected the HDMI cable is connected to a box that i have my DVR and Blu-Ray player plugged into, then that is connected to the TV. The problem is that my macbook will not recognize the TV and the TV does not seem to recognize the macbook. I have read several other posts with the same problem all that seem to be solved by matching the computer's resolution to the TV's and by turning off mirroring in the display preferences, but there does not seem to be an option for turning that off in my display options and the detect display button seems to do nothing. Any help would be appreciated

  • Connecting Macbook to Sony Bravia

So I think have all the cable i need to connect the two. I'm using a Mini DVI to VGA cable but when I connect the cable to the TV, the PC input can't be selected it is just grayed out.

Your Bravia also has at least one HDMI input....DVI is digital video....VGA is analog...try a cable setup like this...
    http://www.amazon.com/PTC-Mini-DVI-Adapter-6ft-Macintosh/dp/B001H0REVK
It is how I connect my MacBook to my Toshiba...
Remember the mini-DVI port does not carry audio....you will need another cable for that

  • How to connect macbook to sony bravia using hd15 port

Im trying to hook up my white macbook into my sony tv. the manual says to use a hd15-hd15 cable. what do i need?
    please help!

IF your white MB has a miniDVI output, one of these should do the trick...

Of course, you will also need a 3.5 to L/R audio cable for sound and you will need a VGA cable.
Why not use an HDMI port if you have free one? Better picture.

  • MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008) to Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800

    Hello forum,
I am looking to buy a Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800 (Sony link, Amazon link) in the near future. I am going to be using it to play PS3, watch television and DVDs/Blu-Rays, but also I would like to be able to connect my MacBook to it if I wish to. I have been reading the forum and have come across numerous users that have problems connecting their MacBook to their HD-TVs.
    So my questions are:
What adapter cables do I need to connect the two devices (I already own the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, if that's any help) correctly?
Is the Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800 compatible with the MacBook and does anyone have any experience with the TV itself? If so, I would be grateful for any kind of feedback.
    Thank you in advance,
    XtremeFluX

    Hi,
I have been using my macbook (late 2008 2.4 ghz) with my Sony Bravia (KDL 26S2030) for about a year now. I use Mini Display port to VGA and then into my PC input. I am perfectly happy with the picture quality (although you may want to fiddle with you custom settings) and I have never had any issues.
When I was looking originally I came across tons of people who had problems with connecting the Macbook to their monitors. However there was a patch that came out (maybe last march) and so I bought my equipment after that and the mac always connects properly (although be sure to turn your TV on before to put the mini display port in). You will need to calibrate it and that will be that.
I hope that helps a bit.

  • Cables for Macbook Pro to Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 ??

    Greetings -
We have an Aug 2009 MacBook Pro -- would like to feed video / movies to our Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500, which has all manner of inputs -- HDMI, Composite, S-Video.
There appears to be a video port between the firewire & 2 USB ports.
What cable(s) do I need to get the optimal picture to the TV (and what to the receiver)?
    Thanks,

  • Connect a mini hifi to my sony bravia kdl-60w610b?

Is there a way to connect my lg LG CM4530 Mini HiFi System to my sony bravia kdl-60w610b?

    Hi Folks,
It's easy, there's just a few things you need to know.
Bought the minidisplay to HDMI cable off ebay for about £6.00. Pluged in both ends OK. Had to disconnect the recorder first. Might have to look at some kind of splitter so I don't have to do this every time.
Select the HDMI input on the tele.
At first the TV will only display the basic Mac background picture (stars) You need to 'Mirror' the displays, and sort out the sound.
Go to 'System Preferences' and select 'Displays'. With the Mac plugged into the TV you get an extra tab (Arrangements) at the top of the box. Select 'Arrangement' and check the 'Mirror Displays' box.
Next from System Preferences select 'Sound'. Both 'Internal Speakers' and the TV are listed. Select the TV.
    All should be working now.
HD video without Blueray - result!!
    Cheers

  • Apple TV doesn't connect with sony bravia KDL-40NX720 TV

I'd like to connect my apple TV (bought yesterday) to my Sony bravia KDL-40NX720.
I connect the Apple TV with the HDMI cable but it doesn't connect to the Sony.
    What can I try?

Do you have a 2nd or third gen Apple TV?  The problem may be you have 3rd Gen which requires a 1080i supporting TV and I am assuming the 720 at the end of your model number means it is a 720i TV.  That would support 2 Gen apple TV but not 3rd.  Is that possibly the problem?
Check which ATV you have and the tech spec of the TV.  If I am wrong please post again so we can look at other issues.
Hope I am wrong by the way!

  • How to connect macbook to Sony tv

    Hi there,
I spent most of last night trying to get this done! No problems with the vision, cable between Macbook and HDMI input on the TV is fine.
I have a 3.5mm Jack to Phono lead which I thought would work for the Audio.  No sound. Maybe I'm not setting the Sony TV up properly, or I'm putting them in the wrong inputs (I've tried the all I think). There is a headphone (3.5mm) on the TV...but surely that's an output.
    Help please!!

Hi there and thanks for getting back to me! Sorry for the lack of info I posted...hope this helps
    Model Identifier:          MacBook2,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
I've hooked up the MacBook to the Tv with the Mini DVI - HDMI...the screen is showing fine. No problems
    there.
The problem I have is with the audio. I guess that a normal HDMI-HDMI set-up (Blu-ray/DVD) carries audio and
    vision.
I have a Mini-Jack to Phono lead which I thought I would get the audio to come out of the Tv.
The Tv is a Sony Bravia KDL-40EX503. My guess is that I need to tell the Tv which input to take the audio
from. I can't figure it out though.
Thanks so much for your help!

Is there anybody who can help me?
    Thanks in advance!
    R.

    @RW4HP ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  Lets see if we can get your sound issue resolved here.
First thing we will want to do is break down each step in the chain of components.
First thing you will want to try is to connect directly to the display with your notebook and try to play the movie.
If no sound go to the next HDMI input on the Display.  NOT THE SONY.  If no sound from each of the input ports on the Display.  Change the HDMI cable.
    Repeat the first steps.
Now if that fails try another DVD.  If you are still having a no sound issue try a new media player.
Switch up to VLC media player.  The only reason I suggest this one is due to the fact that is a free player and is loaded full of codecs that support almost anything.
    VLC Media Player
If this fails to do the job then we shall move on to the removal of the drivers.
Now when you go to uninstall the HDMI driver you will want to do this from safe mode.  This will make sure no other drivers or software are live to make a mess of the removal.
Before you remove the drivers though you will want to download the drivers that are the only supported drivers for your system from this link.
HP ENVY 17-j001eb Notebook PC Drivers
Now boot into safe mode and remove the HDMI drivers and the Graphics and Sound drivers.
    Windows 8 Safe Mode
Once you have done all this the next thing is to follow the steps for troubleshooting HDMI.
    Here are some links.

  • What connector do I need for MacBookPro1,1 for a Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000?

I'm a little confused on which display connector I need to hook up my Macbook Pro (MacBookPro1,1) to a Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000. (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&XID=O:kdl32l5000:dg_ggldf&productId=819855292166574629 4)
    can anyone help me?

As you have a 1st gen MBPO, I'd go with a DVI to VGA converter, as per http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A
If you want sound, you'll either want a 3.5mm stereo to RCA / Phono stereo lead also, similar to this:

    Hope that this helps
