Connecting MacBook to TV to watch movies

I am wanting to connect my MacBook to my television but not sure what cable(s) to buy to be able to watch movies on my TV. It's not for HD, just a standard tv. Im not sure which MacBook model i have, all i know its the model before they introduced the aluminium model. Any help would be greatly appreciated .. Thanks guys!

My tv in the living room only has scart and the three colours (Red, Yellow, White).. Its pretty old.. hopefully get a new one soon :P.. but the one in my room has S-Video.. Is there a big different in video/audio quality between the two? If so.. what's best? Is S-Video just for the picture and will i not need something else for sound?

  • Can no longer connect with itunes store to watch movies. How come?

I have been using Apple TV to watch movies on my television set for several months with no problems. The last movie I watched was on Nov. 22/13, but since then every time I want to rent a movie, I am unable to access the itunes store. I get a message saying Unable to sign In and that I should try again later. I have tried about 15 times over 2 days and keep getting the same message. Oddly enough I can actually watch the preview of any movie, but when I go through the process of actually renting the movie, then I get the message that I am unable to access the itunes store. What is the solution? Same problem with NETFLIX.

Try running iTunes Diagnostics and pasting the output here.
What firewall software are you running on your computer? Try to set it up again or uninstall it (for testing purposes only).

  • Connecting iphine to tv to watch movies

I was wondering if anyone could tell me; is it possible to watch a movie that is on my iphone on our tv via an AUX cable or like?

Yes, I recommend that you purchase "official" apple cables. They are a bit pricey, but some cheaper aftermarket cables lack the DRM chip that apple places in their cables, & thus won't work. This chart will tell you what cables to buy for what phone/ipod:

  • Can you watch movies with lid closed on Powerbook G4 that's connected to TV

Hi there, is it possible to have a Powerbook G4 connected to a TV and watch movies with the Powerbook's lid closed.

yes, but you need some sort of device like a mouse or a keyboard to "wake" it up. can be wired or wireless.
an app called "caffeine" may also work, you can try it, it's a free utility that keeps the machine awake.

You'll need a Mini-DVI adapter for the MacBook 4,1 and the iMac 8,1 and a cable from that to your TV. Here's the various types of Mini-DVI adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13
(Composite is the red, white and yellow RCA plugs on your TV or red, white and S-Video plugs.)
You'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the Composite. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

  • Could I connect the lap top to TV and watch movies and control the lap top from a distance?

could I connect the Apple lap top to my TV to watch movies and control the lap top from a distance just like the Window lap top???

Check out Apple TV.  It is a wireless interface to your TV.  It may be the best $99 investment you can make for entertainment on your TV.  It simply requires a standard $10 HDMI cable, not supplied with the Apple TV unit.  Through Apple TV, with Mavericks, you can use the TV as a standard OS X monitor or for entertainment.  Also check out the Beamer software to stream videos to it from your Mac.
Apple TV requires a Mid 2011 or newer MacBook Air with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later.
If your MBA is not new enough you can use the AirParrot application but the video quality is not as high as with a newer MBA.  It also streams from iOS devices.

AirPlay is available on all devices running iOS 4.3 or later. Some features require the latest software. Second-generation Apple TV or later required.
AirPlay Mirroring is available with iPhone 4s or later; iPad 2 or later; iPad mini; iPod touch (5th generation); and iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer), and Mac Pro (Late 2013) with OS X Mountain Lion or later.

  • Watching movies on Macbook Air, Why is it so difficult?

Hey, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to watch movies/Netflix on my macbook air without it delaying every 5 mins? Thanks Eden

That sounds like you internet connection.  If you are connecting wirelessly, try connecting direct wire.  Otherwise, you need to let the movie download for 10 - 15 minutes, before you click play.

Thank you for the answer, I suppose the main thrust of my enquiry is to find out if 65 MBits is my ATV theoretical limit of reception.  If that is the case then I am happy as a Pig in Mud
I may have allowed myself to become a victim by listening to Fanbois posting elsewhere who always seem to go one better than everyone else. Now I have learnt two things Today; 65Mbit/s = Good enough and only read the apple forums.
    Many Thanks

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • What cable do I need to watch movies on my Sony HDTV LCD tv from MacBook pr

I have a brand new MacBook pro 13" and just wanted to watch movies on my tv instead of the laptop, thanks

Depends on what input options you have on your TV.
If your TV has DVI in then you need a MiniDisplay Port to DVI Adapter.
If your TV does not have DVI in but has HDMI then you need a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support.

I use iwires to connect macbook to lg tv to watch netflix. How do you increase screen size on rv.I have tried display settings ,but not working

I would guess that the HDMI port on your mac is for output only - no input, and that's what your'e attempting to do when you attach the mac to your xbox. I looked in Mactracker and it lists the HDMI port as video output for both the 13" Retina MacBook Pro and the 15" Retina MacBook Pro (your post didn't say which one you have), so looks like that is the issue..
