Connecting Macs to PC running Ubuntu via Airport Express

I've been puzzling over this one for a while, and have tried various combinations of configurations through Airport Admin Utility, but still can't get this to work.
We have 2 apple computers, an iMac Dual Core and a Powerbook G4 both running OS 10.4.8, and an old Dell which is running Ubuntu 6.06.
The Macs connect to the internet via a usb modem connected to the Powerbook G4, the iMac connecting via Airport.
I would like to be able to connect the old Dell PC running Ubuntu to this internet connection, and ultimately the 2 Macs, via the ethernet port on an Airport Express box.
Can this be done?

Yes.
The Ubuntu would act as a gateway or router.
The Airport Express should be configured to not distribute IP addresses.
To be honest an easier solution would be to get a wireless router with ethernet ports instead.
Are you using ADSL.
Check out the following website.
Reviews of equipment
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/reviews/
I would recommend replacing your USB modem with an ethernet ADSL Modem Router
As most ADSL Modem Routers are setup through a web browser you should be fine with a Mac.
I would also check out ADSL Nation's X-Modem M3 http://www.adslnation.com/products/xmodem-m3.php It is also now available from the UK Apple store and retail stores.
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?productLearnMore=TJ151
which can also be used in conjunction with an AEBS or AX.

  • Connecting computers via Airport Express

I have a problem that I've been trying to solve, but so far nothing has worked.
I have three Macs, 2 G4 PowerBooks and an iMac (Core 2 Duo) which are all connected via an Airport Express. All of the computers can access the net and my printer just fine. The iMac can connect to both of the G4s, and one of the G4s can connect to both the iMac and the other G4. The problem is that one of the G4s can only connect to the other G4, not the iMac. It's as though the iMac does not exist for it's purposes. Yet I can connect to that G4 from the iMac, just not the other way around.
Any clues as to a fix for this would be greatly appreciated.

That is what you want to select.
You jumped into the middle of this thread. What
    problem do you have?
More to the point - what is YOUR problem...I think your response was a little rude...
One who has common sense can see what issue I am having simply by looking at the subject of the original post - and reading my entire post.
For your benefit, the subject is: Problems Connecting Two Computers to Cable Modem via AirPort Express.
If you read my post again, you will see that after following the advice given by Rj, I am still having problems. I will not re-post my question. Simply restating things in this post has been a waste of time.

  • Trouble printing to Epson Workforce 435 via airport express network

We have an Epson Workforce 435 printer that connects wirelessly to our home network via Airport Express.  After we switched to AT&T, we could no longer print from our Windows 7 PC connected to the network via Airport as well.  Our Macbook air works just fine.  The printer's network status sheet says it is connected, but it's like our computer can't find it on the network.  Can't ping the printer's IP address either.

Okay, I have checked the settings on the AX - it is set up to be 802.11b/g compatible, so that doesn't appear to be the problem.
I had a friend come over with her macbook - she was able to detect the wireless network, but wasn't able to connect to it, even when I gave her the password. Does this help diagnose the problem?
Here is additional information about how the AX is currently configured:
In the Airport tab in AirPort Utility:
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Radio Mode: 802.11b (802.11b/g compatible)
    Channel: 1
    Wireless security: WEP
MAC Address Access Control: Not Enabled
In the Internet tab in Airport Utility:
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    Ethernet WAN port: Automatic
    Connection sharing: Off (Bridge mode)
I have tried turning wireless security off, but that didn't help the problem. I have also tried turning MAC Address Access Control to Timed Access, inputted the MAC address of the printer, and gave it permission to access the network all day, everyday, but this didn't work either. I have looked at changing the connection sharing settings, but I don't really understand what I'm doing here, so I am reluctant to mess with things much. This seems like the most promising potential solution?
    Thanks!

  • Connect Imac to Stereo via Headphone Jack & 2nd Stereo via Airport Express

I have two whole-house stereo systems; one serving the lower level (basement) of my house and another serving the first and second floors. My iMac is on the lower level. The house was prewired with two coax cables (standard cable TV-type cables) from the area behind my stereo on the lower level to the room where my iMac is located. Using adapters from Radio Shack, I was able to directly connect my iMac to my home stereo on the lower level. I can currently play my iTunes on my lower level stereo by plugging the cable into the headphone jack on my iMac.
I am set up with a wireless network using a Linksys WRT54G. I would like to be able to also stream music from iTunes on my iMac to my home stereo on the first floor. I realize I can do this with the use of Airport Express.
My goal is to be able to play the same music from iTunes on my iMac on both stereos simultaneously. My question is; if I have my lower level stereo connected to my iMac via the headphone jack, will I still be able to stream the same music from iTunes to my upper level stereo via Airport Express? I'm concerned that by connecting the lower level stereo to the headphone jack, the music will not be able to be streamed wirelessly to the upper level stereo.
Thank you in advance for your time.
iMac 24 in.   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Wireless keyboard & mouse, Linksys WRT-54G connected wirelessly

    Hi.
Assuming your iMac is no more than 50 feet from where you intend to locate the express then:
You will need to configure your airport express to join your current wireless network in client mode (otherwise you won't be able to use the internet and the express at the same time).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302153
In iTunes there is an option to select multiple speakers. Thus you select this and then check the desired options. Hence you can have music coming out of the speakers/hadphone jack on your iMac AND out of the speakers connected to the airport express.

  • Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.

Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.  TP-link wired/wireless router.  Ultimate goal is to send music from iTunes on PC to wireless router, then to airport, then to reciever.  The amber light is blinking.  Thanks in advance for the help!

If I'm understanding right your need and your computer has wired access to your network/router, all you have to do is give your AX wireless or wired access to your network too.
Wired should be easier.  Just use a network cable to connect to the router.  Power up the AX and look for it on AirPort Utility, do so without changing any of your computer settings.  If it's visible, then on iTunes your AX should be visible on the AirPlay icon at the bottom-right corner.
If you want to connect your AX to your router wirelessly I would suggest to reset your AX settings by pressing and holding for a few secs the reset button next to all the ports.  Once it is reset, using your computer try to look for the wireless network it'll be creating, it should be something like Apple Network 4341eb.  Join that network and, using the AirPort Utility, configure your AX as a network client.  Go to Wireless > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network.
Select your router wireless network from the drop-down menu, select the appropriate security and type in your password.  Click update.
It'll restart and automatically join your network.  Have your computer join back your router network and, again, in iTunes bottom right you should be able to see the AX speakers.
Let me know if this worked.

  • Can't find certain servers connecting via Airport Express

For the last couple of weeks I've been intermittantly unable to access certain websites (time.com / nytimes.com) when connected to the Net via Airport Express. Sometimes these pages come up, more often then not, they don't. I have no problem receiving email or accessing other sites. Also, I always loose my connection when streaming news stories from NPR. However, I have no such problem when connected directly via ethernet. Thus, it seems to be some glitch with airport express. Does this make sense to anyone?

    Gerard Van Schip wrote:
I have 3 printers connected to the network via Ethernet and as long as I'm connected directly to the network I can print but as soon as I connect to one of the 4 Airport Express units I have I can no longer print.
You don't describe what happens when you try to print.
Does the IP address your computer is granted in both configurations match in the first three elements (such as 10.0.1.5 and 10.0.1.7)? If not, then your AirPort Express unit is creating a new "subnet", which can cause problems when your computer tries to communicate with the printer.
Try adding the printer in the "Print & Fax" panel of System Preferences by choosing the "IP" option and entering the IP address of the printer.

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • G5 & PC NOT STAYING CONNECTED VIA AIRPORT EXPRESS!

I've got a G5 and a PC - Hoped that Airport Express would allow both to access internet (via cable modem).
The connection drops after a little while. Everything says its working but obviously it's not.

I have white Macbook (802.11g capable) and Airport Express (802.11g capable).
I have a LAN internet connection, which is pretty fast. When I connect the cable to my ethernet and try to download something (for instance, speedtest.net) then the download speed is 33Mbit/sec, and upload is 20Mbit/sec.
I also have an Airport Express router - the 802.11g to be specific. So in the Airport Utility, under Wireless I selected "802.11g ONLY" and selected 24Mbit/sec Multicast rate.
When I tried to download something when conected to my Airport Express router - what actually happened, is that my computer is 2 m away from the Airport Express and the max download speed approximately should be ~24 Mbit/sec, but it turns out that the down speed is ONLY 14 Mbit/sec and the upload speed is 11 Mbit/sec.
So it means, that the Airport Express actually cannot deliver the 24 Mbit/speed.
I am actually pretty dissapointed, because I was kind of okay with the fact that I will loose those ~10 Mbit/sec from my actual internet sped when connected via Airport express, but I did not expect that it would be halved.
    Any solutions?
According to one source, the maximum throughput of 802.11g is 25 Mbps. That assumes ideal conditions. To learn more about those conditions in your case, launch AirPort Utility, double-click on your AirPort station to enter "Manual Setup" mode, select the "Advanced" panel, click on the "Logs and Statistics" button, then click on the "Wireless Clients" tab. There you will see values for signal and noise. The closer those two numbers are together, the worse throughput you can expect.
If the value for noise is high, you might try setting your AirPort unit to a different channel.
All the above is based on your having no other Wi-Fi equipment.

  • Connecting via AirPort Express: Performance Help Needed.

    Hello,
I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, pointers to threads I may have missed re: improving performance/determining the cause of poor performance when connecting via AirPort Express.
The deal: Up to 6 devices are connected to our AirPort Express. Only three of these are ever used simultaneously, though all remain "on," in either sleep or hybernate mode. Performance across the network is terribly uneven. Current data rate stats (a snapshot by way of the AirPort utility, in order of distance from the router):
    iMac: 130 Mb/s
    Printer: 54 Mb/s
    Macbook Pro: 144 Mb/s
    iPhone: currently "off"
PC (Connected via Belkin USB-type Wireless Adapter): 2 Mb/s
    iPad: 39 Mb/s
Note: the Macbook Pro is often located in a room farthest from the hub, some 120 feet away and with partial direct line of site. Still, its performance is unimpeded.
At first glance, logic would dictate the worst problem is on the PC and caused by the Belkin adapter. But I've swaped that out for different USB solutions. Performace is seldom improved.
    Wondering if:
    a) The PC problem is in the data transfer rate of the PC bus. (Foregive me if I'm using "bus" incorrectly here. I'm guessing you'll know what I mean.) Or is it the nature of the USB adapters?
    b) Please also note that the Printer, which sits close to the router, often has a drop in data rate, sometimes to the single digits.
Again, I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, or pointers. Also for wisdom on "extending" the network, perhaps by adding another AirPort device. I'm rather clueless about such stuff.
Thanks in advance-  Best for the weekend-

    Thanks,
I'm pretty sure the card is seated properly (it works most of the time after all). I couldn't get it to work when I installed it because it wasn't seated properly, I pushed it in as far as it could possibly go and it has worked since (except after extended periods of use). The Airport express is three feet from the eMac with only a couple of bits of wood between them. The connection does not go down at times which I can link with the use of any particular appliances (When the eMac stops working, the iBook is always fine, even in a similar position). It is the apparently time-dependent aspect that I can't figure out (I only notice it on those, fairly infrequent, occasions when I am online for a few hours at a time). The eMac discussion group is a good tip. Ta.

  • Epson Aculaser CX11NF printing via Airport Express

Well today has been an interesting day...
Connected printer to airport express usb port - had problems printing via this in the past but since I'd moved the printer so I could plug it into the usb port on a computer and then share it that way I thought I'd give it another go.
Macbook 10.5.2 prints perfectly first time
Powerbook 10.4.11 can see it and connect but won't print
Toshiba XP laptop) can't see it
Check out the net, try out the info I find and hey presto! Toshiba XP laptop sees and prints perfectly
Share printer via Markbook and Markintosh and Powerbook prints fine but still won't print directly via airport express.
Feels wrong that an xp book can print via an apple airport express easier than an apple laptop...
    Anyone have any thoughts?

  • HP printer not printing via Airport Express

I have a HP DeskJet D2330 printer that I am trying to use via Airport Express. The issue is that while the printer is detected in the Airport Utility, and is detected in System Preferences as a Bonjour printer, I can't print to it. Documents sent to the printer appear in the queue and then disappear but no pages come out of the printer.

Hi - similar problem. Mine talked a little (test page would print about ~1 inch then grind to halt). No luck with escalated apple network tech. Problem (apple sez) is with HP. HP is quiet but has list of printers "likely" to work with Airport Extreme , but dated (indicates rendezvous with extreme vice bonjour). FYI, my printer works fine when USB direct to mac. Also Works fine from Mac or PC as ethernet-connected printer on home network (with Linksys/N Giga router) as network printer (also sets up as "bonjour" printer for what that is worth). Also problem exists with imac connected to Airport extreme via wireless or wired. So...problem seems to be pretty specific to talking via airport extreme USB. Havent tried to use ethernet yet, but need the slot for other equip.
    Anyone else having any luck?
Also anyone have proven good printer hookup? I need photo quality printer.

This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes.  It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.
