Connecting MB to PC External Hard Drive through network

I just bought a MacBook and want to use my external Hard Drive (Seagate Free Agent 500gb) that is connected to my WIndows XP Media PC (Dell 510) through a residential gateway network (AT&T Uverse). I actually have 3 external drives connected to my PC and can dedicate one to the Mac if I can get the network to recognize Externals and Printers
I have been successful at connecting the Mac and the PC, however I cannot figure out how to share the external drives and the printers from the MacBook.
Any ideas?

Thanks, so far iFelix only has instructions up to 10.4 with 10.5 coming soon. I am working on figuring out how to translate to the new system. I haven't worked on a Mac in a while so I am a little lost.
Any suggestions still appreciated.

    Hello Sir Gudo,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

Do not store them in the Cloud.  It isn't really storage.  For iTunes purchases, for example, it is just re-downloading a purchase.  If a label decides to no longer make the item available it will disap[pear from the cloud and that will be it for you.
You can't store items on an external drive simply by dragging them there.  That's too complicated for iTunes and how it is set up to work.  I know I post on this 10x a week and there's many other posts discussing this.  I suggest you browse a bit first.  Your options are basically to either put your whole library on the eternal drive (which is a nuisance if you don't want to drag it everywhere with you), or to copy individual items to the external drive, delete them from the internal drive, then re-add them as new items (re-adding to playlists, etc.).

  • Connect Encore with external hard drive through micro USB OTG cable

    Hi
I am using a micro USB OTG cable to connect the encore with a (get this) toshiba 1TB external hard drive, but when i connect the two, the hard drive connects and then reconnects every 5 to 10 seconds ... and this goes on constantly. This is getting beyond frustrating. Any suggestions ?

Yea, it's not gonna power anything that needs 2 USB ports as such need more than 500ma. There may well be a low power USB2 spec for tablets Jerry, but what I meant to refer to us the common 500ma standard USB port spec that device manufacturers generally expect. Sorry for being misleading. Basically one can expect issues from any port designed lower than the 500ma spec but I am sure the Encore is designed for the 'full' 500ma, so any example putting out less is below the designed spec. I still suspect the OTG cable first though.

  • Will connecting an external hard drive through an airport express work?

Using an airport express can an external hard drive be used successfully to store photo files directly to be used with Iphoto?

The only way a network drive format can be relevant is using a virtual disk. Otherwise it is not offering HFS+ or FAT32 or NTFS or anything else.. it is offering a network protocol for file storage. You can of course create a virtual disk space using methods pondini mentions here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
I know TM requires HFS+ to work.. and I do have it working on an SMB drive in a NAS.. the NAS has formatted the drives XFS I think or EXT3.. but it will be some linux format.. TM creates the sparsebundle on the disk.. the sparsebundle is a virtual disk which is HFS+ as required..
Whether that is required ofr iphoto I don't have experience with to know. You could well be right.. in which case it explains why iphoto gives so much trouble if people even use TC as a place to store the library.
Nevertheless the NAS itself cannot use HFS+.. the only device that i know of that uses HFS+ for internal format of the disk is Time Capsule. There is no other NAS on the market that uses it because Linux cannot reliably write HFS+.. it can handle HFS. Almost every NAS in existence runs Linux.. again the TC is unusual running NetBSD. Which is probably a requirement so it can run HFS+ on the disk. And so Time Machine can work reliably.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a External Hard Drive (through Ethernet) ONLY?

    Here is my situation:
I am a college student and have been using my Time Capsule to create a wireless network (or extend a previous one) and also to store my iTunes library content (kind of like a wireless hard drive).  I just moved into a new apartment and they already have a wireless network and it works just fine how it is.  I know that I can extend the network through my Time Capsule (wirelessly because I don't have a long enough ethernet cord to connect into the existing modem), but I don't need/want to because it would just add another path of access for data to go through.  I don't mind just having my computer connect wirelessly to the existing wireless router rather than sending it wirelessly through the Time Capsule which would then just need to send the data to the existing router.  It just seems like it would make things slower and I don't want to even deal with it.  I hope that makes sense.
This is what I want to do and I'm wondering if it is possible and if so how to do it.  First, I want my computer to be connected to the current wireless network (as if I didn't even have a TIme Capsule extending the network) so I can access the internet BUT SECOND, I want to access the iTunes library content I have saved on the Time Capsule through a direct ethernet connection.  I have too much content (i.e. movies, music...etc) to be able to save it all on my laptop and so that is why it is on the Time Capsule.  So simply, if the Time Capsule is plugged into my laptop, can I have it so it ONLY acts like a normal ethernet connected external hard drive?

TC can be set a number of different ways.. Just run it as a router for now.. ie exactly at default.. The fact that you don't have WAN address or connection is irrelevant.. we can tell the TC to ignore the problem. At default the TC is 10.0.1.1
The only issue you can have is if the wireless network is also 10.0.x.x. if it is change the IP of the TC to 192.168.10.1 (or whatever you like.. as long as it isn't the same).
Use static IP settings for the network in the Mac.. you can use exactly the same IP and subnet the TC passed by dhcp. Just no router (gateway) or dns.. so as to not confuse the main network.
You seem to be worrying to much about getting everything right..
Start.. learn.. it is faster to do it and see what happens.. than keep asking questions.
If you run into a snag disconnect the TC.. or reset to default and ask the specific question.

  • How do I backup with TimeMachine to my External Hard Drive through iCloud?

I have connected my external hard drive to my iMac and it has Back to My Mac through iCloud enabled.  On my Laptop I have been able to access the iMac through the shared computer section of the Finder and then mount the external hard drive to my machine.  In Time Machine preferences I have selected the disk that I mounted and it shows me the name in black and below it iMac in grey.  However when it goes to back up it gets an error and says the Backup disk is not available.  What do I need to do to make the disk available?
    Thanks!

    Two ideas.
    1) You need to drag the little icon next to the Event in the Event Library List (on the left) to the litlle icon for the drive in the event library list.  Do not drag anything from the main Event Pane.
You should also know that a simple drag and drop will copy the Event to your external drive. If you hold down the Command Key while you drag, it will be a Move rather than a copy. If your goal is to save space, use Move.
    2)
The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Also known as HFS+.
FAT32 drives will not work. NTFS drives will not work.
If you right-click on the drive in the Finder and "Get Info", you should be able to tell how the drive is formatted.
You can reformat if necessary using Disk Utility, but this will erase anything that is currently on the drive.
If the formatting appears to be correct, report back and maybe we can think of other things to try.

  • How do i access an external hard drive through time capsule from my macbook

I've just bought a 2GB Time Capsule but I can't see my external hard drive plugged in to the Time Capsule's USB in Finder from my Macbook.
When I plug the hard drive in to the Macbook the drive appears on the desktop. HDD was originally set up for a windows machine, I've read some other posts that say the Time Capsule won't back up the drive unless it's Mac Formatted... does the same apply if you are just trying to access it and copy files etc?
I'm connected wirelessly through the Time Capsule.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Niel
... so if I have a correctly formatted HDD, I presume I can just see the HDD in Finder under 'Data' in Time Capsule?
I might just transfer the files I need from my HDD connected to my Macbook on to the TimeCapsule over the wifi and sort the formatting issue later.

  • Backup my external hard drives through the network.

I have a small network at the house. Three computers hooked up to the airport extreme router. Then I have a usb hub connected to the input of the router. To the hub I have 4 external Maxtor 1tb hard drives. Everything works beautifully.
I would like to have two of the external hard drives back up the other two externals.
I tried time machine, special software, Maxtor sync manager nothing works.

I'm having similar issues to that. I have a Maxtor 500GB external drive that I would like to be able to attach to my Airport Extreme and access it that way. I am part of a three computer home network, but I'm the only one running Leopard, and I want the other two computers to be able to use the drive for simple drag and drop backup, rather than TM. However, after much searching, I haven't really got anywhere in figuring out how to set it up. How did you set up your drives going through the network?

  • Why is it that my powerbook does not recognize when i insert external hard drives through the USB 2.0 port

when i insert an external harddrive through the usb port, my mac doesnot recognise that its even there but when a flash disk is inserted, it recognises it perfectly.
    why does that happen?

Michael is on the right track. Some external hard drives lacking their own power supply simply cannot get enough power from a single USB port. It is most noticeable in the "name brand" drive that the office supply and computer superstores put on sale every other week. Their chipsets seem to be better optimized for Windows than Macs.
Flash drives work because the don't have a power-hugry motor that must turn.
There are two easy and inexpensive cures that allow you to keep your current drive:
get a "Y-cable" that let you connect one drive to two of the computers UWB ports. Example:1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
get a self-powered USB hub. It has a separate power supply that boosts what goes to the drive. Example: Macally TriHub - 4 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub for Mac & PC
If you need the computer and drive to work together in an environment lacking a power source for the hub, and the y-cable isn't an option because you have too few available USB ports, then your only option is to replace the current drive with one better optimized for Macs, like these:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go
This particular one has the option of running on power from the computer's USB ports or, with an optional power supply, wall power. A good compromise for both remote and desktop use.

  • Can't play music from external hard drive through iTunes on Windows 8?

I recenty bought a new laptop running Windows 8 with a small internal hard drive, so I don't want to store all my music on it. I backed up my iTunes library onto an external hard drive, but when I plug this into my new laptop I can't play my music no matter what I do.
    I have tried:
    - selecting the newly created iTunes library by pressing Shift when opening iTunes and playing a song directly through the iTunes player. It selects the song, comes up with the speaker icon next to it to indicate it is playing, but the time doesn't count down and no music plays
    - I have gone into Advanced Preferences and specified the iTunes media folder location, still no songs play
    - coped a single song onto my new laptop desktop and tried to play this through iTunes, Media Player and the Music app. Media player says "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". The Music app says it can't find any music on the computer, so when I select the music folder from my hard drive, it says "Can't Play. Make sure your computer's sound and video cards are working and have the latest drivers, then try again".
I know my laptop can play sound and video as I can watch YouTube videos with no problems. I went to Windows Update, and there are no available updates, I already have every available update.
I have also plugged in a different external hard drive, with different music files on it, and have encountered the exact same problems. It seems I can't play any music at all on this laptop. I know the files are not corrupted, as I can plug both hard drives into a different laptop that runs on Windows 7 and play the music on them with no troubles. Could it be a problem with the files compatibility with Windows 8?
I can also access my iPhone backup through this iTunes library on the new computer, so I know there is no problem with my backup.

I am experiencing a similar problem in Windows 7 64bit.  Since my laptop has a 128gb SSD, I have loaded my iTunes library on to an external drive.  I can sync my iPhones and iPads from this library, and the songs play fine from those devices.  However, when I select a song from my library, and click the play button, nothing happens.  iTunes does nothing.  I have also tried right-clicking mp3s in my library and selecting "Play", with no results.  I do not receive an error message of any kind.
I have also noticed that some of my mp3's within iTunes denote the Time as 00:00.  The same mp3's will play and register properly using other mp3 players on my computer, and they also play normally on my iPhones and iPads.
I am running Windows 7 x64 on a Lenovo T530, in iTunes 11.1.3.  Everything else in iTunes appears to function normally.  I can listen to internet radio stations without an issue, through iTunes, and they play as they should.  I have tried three different external drives, with different drive formats, and they all have the same issue.  If I copy my iTunes library back to my internal drive, iTunes will play my mp3s.
I did not have this issue with iTunes 10, so I am assuming it is something that has occured within the last few updates.
Has anyone found a fix for this?  Unfortunately, I am forced to use iTunes 11 because of my iOS devices, otherwise I would revert to iTunes 10.

  • HT201250 can i back up my iTunes on one external hard drive to another external hard drive through time machine?

I have my itunes on an external hard drive which I use on my macbook. Can I back these files up through time machine onto a second external hard drive?

For TM yes, for another backup program running on the mac yes. You can avoid the NTFS issue by installing a NTFS driver in your mac: there are two proven ones: Paragon and NTFS-3G. These drivers make it possible for a mac to read and write NTFS formatted drives.
But it will not help TM (I am not 100% sure about that), but other backup apps it will help.

  • Connect iMovie '11 to External Hard drive attached to Time Capsule

I have an external hard drive hooked up p my time capsule. In order to access it I have to go to finder, then time capsule then external hard drive. I see on all the tutorials that those of you who know what your doing have external hard drives on your Desktop. How do you do that? Thank you
Forgive my elmentary questions I'm very new to Ac but love it, thank you in advance

    1. Select Finder > Preferences (from the Finder menu which you get to by clicking on the desktop or click finder from the Dock.)

  • Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

    Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Kappy, thanks for the information.
So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.
