Connecting MBP to an HDTV

I just bought a new Sony Bravia 1080p LCD television and was able to easily connect my MPB to the new television with a cable supplied in the box by Sony and the adapter supplied by Apple (Seems to be some kind of 9-pin cable...not sure what it is called). Anyhoo, I didn't have to configure anything. As soon as I plugged it in my desktop appeared in brilliant HD resolution on the Sony. Problem is that I can see my desktop and the cursor but I cannot see anything else. I tried playing a photo slideshow and a Quicktime movie and nothing will play. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

There are two things you can do with an external display. One is to mirror, where you will see the same thing on both the MBP and the TV. The other is to extend, where your TV screen will be added to the side of your MBP and you can have some stuff on the MBP and some other stuff on the TV.
If you press the F7 key on your MBP do not press fn and F7, just F7), then you will be able to toggle between one mode and the other. For now, you appear to be in the extension mode, just press F7 and you will switch to mirror.

  • Connect MBP 17" to Samsung 32" HDTV

    Hi
Bought a HDMI-DVI cable and connected the MBP to the TV.
The MBP recognizes the screen and allows for max HDTV resolution but when i try to set the TV to show the MBP the HDMI option is greyed out.
Is there a workaround here or am I stuck to the VGA connector on the TV?
Would of course prefer DVI->HDMI because of the better resolution.

This is a common missunderstanding. Assuming your HDTV has a native resolution of 1366x768, you will acctually get a higher resolution on the VGA-port since the HDMI interface is HDCP-protected not to allow higher resolutions than 1280x720 or 1920x1200 (progressive). It is also very common that the HDMI-connector is disabled for devices not HDCP-compliant which seems to be your case. As I see it there are 3 options for users connecting their macs to their HDTV's:
    1. Use the VGA connection at whatever resolution you prefer (1360x768 usually supported). With a high quality shielded VGA-cable this is satisfactory for most users.
    2. Use the HDMI-interface with the 1280x720/1920x1200 resolution set on the MBP for the HDTV (if supported by the display - ussually this is not the case).
    3. Buy an older HDTV with a (non HDCP) DVI-input, then all the above is usually not a problem.

  • Trouble Connecting Macbook Pro to HDTV

So I just bought a new LG TV and have been trying to connect my MBP to it but to no avail.
I used a Mini Display Port-to-HDMI adapter and then a HDMI-to-HDMI cable to connect to the TV. However, the tv screen says no signal and it just displays the LG sign.
On the other hand, my mac does not recognize the display when the TV is on. Once I turn off the TV, the MBP's screen flashes blue and then it recognizes the TV so I can change settings and stuff in the System Preferences. But as soon as I turn on the TV, the MBP's screen flashes again and then the display does not show up on my MBP at all. When I click "Detect Displays", nothing happens.
I read other posts about connecting a MBP to a HDTV but I didn't find any other post that had the same problem as I do.

...To get Video and Audio? With one cable ...
I'm seeing that the "rocketfish" adapter is not handling the job (from these forums).
I enjoy watching youtube videos, hulu, etc on the big screen through my laptop. The other Windows laptops I'ved had from Sony, HP, Dell, all had HDMI and was easy peasy.
I don't have the patience to buy and return 10 different types of adaters (nor would Best Buy appreciate that)

  • Help! Connecting MBP to HDTV

I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseam but I still can't find a solution that works for me. I am trying to connect my MBP to a Mitsubishi WD-52525 DLP HDTV. I'm using a DVI-HDMI cable. I tried it through an Onkyo AV receiver and directly to the TV HDMI inputs. Nothing. The MBP doesn't recognize that a second display is connected. What could be the problem?

I have done this and it works fine. Did you get it resolved? I have a Sony AV receiver that occasionally does not recognize my Mac mini (connected the same way) and I have to switch video channels on the receiver to something else for 5 seconds then back to get it to recognize the Mac. Also, have you tried connecting the Mac to the TV then booting it up?

  • Trouble Connecting MBP to HDTV

Hi, I've checked multiple threads on multiple forums with people having similar issues but haven't found a resolution yet!
I'm attempting to connect my Late 2011 MacBook Pro to my Sony HDTV using a minidisplay port/Thunderbolt to HDMI cable that I bought off Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Matters-Plated-Premium-DisplayPort/dp/B004CADYDO/r ef=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1362671342&sr=8-13
However, after plugging it all in and turning my TV to the correct HDMI port, there's no picture.
My MBP does the blue screen flash that supposedly shows it has detected the external display, but then nothing happens.
In System Preferences > Display, there is no tab for "Arrange Multiple Displays" (In which the mirroring option can be found) which seems to suggest it can't detect the TV at all.
How do I get my MBP picture on the TV?!
    Thanks.

  • Connecting my MBP to my HDTV???

Anyone know of a cable set up that will feed video and audio to my hdtv from my MBP???? My hdtv has a VGA hookup, S-Video, RCA, Component hookups & HDMI.
If I were to hookup a MiniDisplay to DVI to my MBP and then a DVI to HDMI to the TV would that give me audio too?
I really want to simplify my cable situation so one cable that does it all would be better than multiple cables running from my MBP to my TV.

Can I just piggy-back onto this question? I'm totally clueless to all this audio/visual stuff, but I'm trying to connect my 15 inch MBP (2009) to my Pioneer HDTV (it's something like "Pioneer Elite Pro Kuro", but I don't remember exactly). I just ordered the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor from Monoprice and I also ordered the Toslink cable. Looking now though, I only see a output optical audio port on the back of the TV - so that's not going to work for the audio, right? Can someone please just tell me exactly what cable to buy to make sound go from my MBP to the TV? I know that sounds totally helpless, but I've been googling for days and just can't quite figure it out. There's one hole on the MBP and a million on the TV and I have no idea what any of it means.

  • A 'How to..." question - Connecting a MBP to a HDTV

Just finished installing my new Pioneer HDTV (PDP-427XD) and want to connect my MBP to it. I'm not ready to invest in an Apple TV just yet so I am looking to connect the MBP physically to my HDTV.
Can anyone recommend the best way to do this. I know I need a cable but don't know which one to get.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks for the help.

What you need is a DVI to HDMI cable like this one from monster. The DVI end will hook right up to your MBP and your TV will have a HDMI slot so this is all you need.

  • Display problems when connecting MBP to LG 30FS4D HDTV

Apologies if a similar post has been asked before. Most questions related to this are with LCD TVs.
    Problem description :
    1. I connected my MBP to my LG 30FS4D HDTV ( this is not an LCD ). Both handshake and I can see the output on my TV. MBP display the tv control panel. But the output is just like s-video...probably not as good as that either !
How I connected it to the TV :
    2. miniDVI to DVI adapter ( $19 )
    3. HDMI ( $10 )
What I have tried so far :
    4. I changed the resolutions on the MBP tv display from 720p to 1080i, also other resolutions....but none of them is good quality !
    Questions :
    5. What kind of output should I expect on my tv - I was expecting at least a DVD quality output...but it's no where close to that ?
    6. Do I need to get expensive HDMI cable for this ?
    7. Is my TV the culprit ?
    8. Should I try this on someone's LCD TV ?

For anyone who's facing a similar issue :
Some of these slim TVs switch off other audio input when you connect the HDMI cable ( HDMI is after all, audio and video ). But there is another audio input - the digital optical audio input. In order to get the sound, get a toslink cable ( with optical audio male at one end and a simple headphone male at the other end ) and connect it from your MBP to the TV optical audio input.

  • Connecting MBP with VGA to 32" LCD HDTV?

    What's up everyone,
I'm looking at buying the new 15" Macbook Pro and connecting it to my Westinghouse 32" LCD HDTV. My TV does NOT have DVI input, but does have VGA and HDMI. Has the issue with connecting these bad boys been resolved yet? Has anyone successfully connected a Westinghouse HDTV to a MBP using VGA or HDMI? Please let me know, as I don't want to waste money on the new MBP if it isn't able to connect with my large external display (without problems).
    Thanks,
    Zac

Hi. I wanted your help on choosing the best settings for my external display. I currently have it out to HDMI on my 37" LCD Toshiba.
I tried to display without "mirroring" but if i dont the display on my tv is too large - very simlar to a zoomed in look. When i mirror the screen i can not see the top bar.
Video looks great on the screen.
I want my tv to display similar to a computer monitor!
    Many thanks,
    Tim

  • Connecting MBP to HDTV.

How can I make my MBP 13" display onto DYNEX 40" HDTV without the left and right borders being blacked out? Using HDMI cable to connect. I have the picture up but I would prefer to have the full screen filled.

    @J_BB11 wrote:
No and I returned the tv for a 32" LG which works only full screen when its 720p.
So it does work full screen?
I don't know what to say. I have at least 7 TVs/external displays around here, and some do act differently, but all can go full screen by using the "video adjustment" on the unit. At least two of them started out new with the side bars you describe. A couple pushes of the proper button on the TV/display and it was full screen. If you're sure you tried the proper settings, then it would seem that you either have very bad luck purchasing a TV/display which will match up to your MBP's video output, or your MBP has an issue. Maybe you should make a free appointment with an Apple Store "genius" bar?

  • Connect MBP to HDTV

If you are looking to connect a new 15inch MBP 2.53ghz to a HDTV would you simply use the DVI to HDMI cable for video and then a seperate cable for 3.5mm jack to the two audio cables? is there a simpler way or a cable that incorporates both?

You can use two cables just as you describe, or you can get this adapter then just use an HDMI cable.
