Connecting MBP with VGA to 32" LCD HDTV?

What's up everyone,
I'm looking at buying the new 15" Macbook Pro and connecting it to my Westinghouse 32" LCD HDTV. My TV does NOT have DVI input, but does have VGA and HDMI. Has the issue with connecting these bad boys been resolved yet? Has anyone successfully connected a Westinghouse HDTV to a MBP using VGA or HDMI? Please let me know, as I don't want to waste money on the new MBP if it isn't able to connect with my large external display (without problems).

Hi. I wanted your help on choosing the best settings for my external display. I currently have it out to HDMI on my 37" LCD Toshiba.
I tried to display without "mirroring" but if i dont the display on my tv is too large - very simlar to a zoomed in look. When i mirror the screen i can not see the top bar.
Video looks great on the screen.
I want my tv to display similar to a computer monitor!

It seems that LCD monitors don't come as big as LCD TV's, and I want to use my Mac Pro to watch movies and gaming. A Samsung 35T (30") costs around 1200$ where a 46" lcd HDTV costs about the same price. and a DVI-D (M) to DVD-D (M) cable to the TV store and try various sets. If they won't let you try them, go to another store.
Find a DVI or HDMI port on the TV that supports 1080p and connect it to the MacBook.
In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, turn off Mirroring. Set the resolution of the external display to 1920 x 1080 non-interlaced. Make sure there is no overscan (the pointer should not go off the edges of the screen). In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, drag the picture of the menu bar (aim carefully, so you get just the menu bar, not the whole display) to the picture of the external display. Make sure the entire menu bar and dock show on the TV.
If a TV works well on the MacBook's DVI port, it will work with a Mac Pro.

Mini DVI to VGA issues w/ LCD HDTV

I have looked all over and I can't find a solution.
I recently purchased an LCD HDTV, Insignia Brand which is a Best Buy Brand, and I bought a DVI cable to hook up to my Powerbook G4 using the Mini DVI to VGA cable. When I hook it up to my tv it works, but the screen on my Powerbook looks magnified as does the LCD TV. When I launch Safari or any other program it doesn't fit on my screen or the LCD TV and I have to resize it.
After I look at displays in system prefernces it says my max resolution is 1024 x 768.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just guessing - the TV's "VGA" input is limited to 1024x768, which is possible although some "VGA" inputs will work higher. Do the instructions mention a limitation like this?
I think if you turn off mirroring on the Powerbook, at least the Powerbook screen will have normal resolution, and the TV 1024x768. The TV apparently scales up image to fill the screen unless using HDMI, where is leaves the extra 342 pixels blank on the sides (1366-1024). Perhaps the TV has a mode for adjusting how the TV handles lesser resolutions (stretch, dot-by-dot, etc)

Anyone else having trouble connecting MBP with thunderbolt port (TBp) and 27"iMac with mini display port (MDp)

I have a 27" Imac.i7 with mini displayport and MBP13 i5 with thunderbolt port. Some time ago I tried to connect my old MBP with miniDP to The 27"iMac I Failed so did the apple centre they refunded cable costs and said I'd be contacted by Cupertino. That was 9 months ago, now replaced MBP with 13 inch(**** I can use my iMac as display!). Does not work phoned Fast Lane very helpful guy called JIM emailed me some software/firmware update links. Still no display linking. One of the links was for a couple of updates for a TBp equiped 27" iMac mine is only MDp equiped. Failing to find any MDp updates in apple support. Anyone have any Ideas! My lad has a later 27"i5 he uses Xbox 360 no problem on his but it wont look at my MBP.
Beginning to feel like some of the kit that went with a fully loaded 5500 worked eventually. Computer and FM radio, Photography kit fine, video capture audio capture forget it. Too many crashes and resets made it impractical.

Connecting MBP to new Samsung 46" LCD 6300 series

I'm trying to connect my 46" Samsung LCD TV to my MBP through the network but I don't seem to know how. I have a bittorrent client, Vuze, that seems to find the LCD TV through the network but is there something more proprietary? I tried looking in Samsung's website but all they have is software for the PC, not the Mac. It would be great if I could wirelessly connect my Mac to my LCD TV! THanks for all your help

Wireless? Whoa, that's not possible now. If it possible, the price will be very expensive. In fact You only need a cable from MBP to Display, i.e. Mini DisplayPort Male to HDMI Male Cable

But you know, until now Mini DisplayPort can not output audio but only video. As far as I know Cable Matters Inc. has solution for audio output.If you want high audio quality Mini Displayport Male and Toslink Audio/USB Male to HDMI Female Adapter is good for you since it supports 5.1 Channel audio.

MBP 17" and Toshiba LCD HDTV HookUp HELP NOW PLEASE

I have tried to connect my MBP 17" to my Toshiba LCD HDTV Model # 42HL67 with a male to male VGA Cable as Toshiba will not let you go through HDMI so please don't send me that way and all I get on the Toshiba is nothing in the menu it has a PC where the HDMI and Ant. connections are and the PC is grayed out even though I have it connected using my Adaptor that came with my Macbook Pro 17" the adaptor is the only way I can connect the VGA cable to my MBP why can't I get the picture on the LCD when I'm using the F7 key to mirror is there something else I need to do on my MBP please go into detail as I know my Mac's this is the 1st time connecting any Mac to a TV?

Okay called Apple  and we had a talk and it wasn't
the cable and it wasn't the Macbook Pro 17"
it was the Input Labeling on Toshiba needed to be adjusting
all you have to do is Select it and change it from the
Grayed to the = sign then the PC shows in Input
So now my MBP 17" is on my Toshiba 42" LCD HDTV
and one other note you can use the HDMI adapter that Apple
sells so if you have the Model 42HL67 you can set a PC
up using the HDMI connection your not limited to the VGA...!

Using MBP with LCD HDTV

So I've been looking at getting a new LCD HDTV. Someone said that I needed to get a minimum of a 42'' and also at least 1080p resolution. I was going to hook this all up using the HDMI out into a DVI in the TV.
Is this true? What are your set ups? I'm pretty anxious. I want to use this for movies but also possibly as an external monitor (I know a little ridiculous, but not all the time). Let me know guys! Thanks.

It is easier than you think. First, get a TV with at least 2 HDMI ports. You may wish to connect the other to a HDTV DVR (cable or satellite) or even an HD-DVD/BluRay player.
Next, measure the distance. This is critical. 1080p has TWICE as much bandwidth used as a 1080i signal.
Now, open a new tab in your browser (Apple+T) and go to my favorite cable guys www.bluejeanscable.com I say they are my favorite as they were courteous and honest. Alan Denke, the proprietor of the business, answered truthfully when I asked if his cheapest line of DVI-HDMI cables, the Tartan series, would make it at 50 feet. He asked what kind of hardware I was connecting. I told him, "Well, a brand new 47-inch Vizio with 1080p native support, and a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro." It was then that he said the display didn't really matter, but the source did. And he said the MBP would work just fine.
Cable arrived here from Oregon in one business day, though I didn't pay anything extra for it. Just plain old Priority Mail.
It was then I learned I needed about 30 feet, rather than 50. Remember the step up there where it says ,"Measure?" Yeah, I guesstimated. I kept the cable though, thinking that some day I might use the computer in the kitchen or something.
Now, you'll need to get appropriate playback software. Quicktime just doesn't do .ts (transport stream) files, nor does it do .mkv (Matroska Video Codek) files. It ought to, but it won't. So, no Front Row for HD playback at 1080i. There is hope on the Open Source horizon, though. Go off and open another tab to direct yourself to www.videolan.org
The latest release even has support for the Apple Remote!
Getting audio to your setup is a slightly different thing, but can be done with parts from (ugh) radio shag. For analog audio (which is fine for me as my system don't do any better with digital input), just get a 1/8" STEREO (will have 3 conductors [or two 'rings']) to dual RCA out. They usually have 3 and 6 foot versions of this cable. To extend, you've got 3 options: 8', 16' or 20' male to female 1/8" stereo.
Hope this info helped. If you haven't bought your lcd tv yet, take a look at Vizio. I believe them to be the best bang for the buck out there.

Macbook to 32-inch LCD HDTV with VGA...odd problem

My TV is a Toshiba 32in LCD HDTV. I currently hook my Macbook up via VGA. The quality in general is superb. Picture is sharp and saturated. BUT...
When I'm watching a movie (stored on my macbook) on the TV, a rectangular portion of the top right corner will occasionally appear to lag behind the rest of the movie by a fraction of a second. It almost looks like a "picture-in-picture," with the top right corner simply being delayed. Even more strangely, this only lasts for a moment, as the lagging section slowly shrinks until it disappears entirely. A minute or so will pass, and it will happen again.
I've noticed that it normally happens most when there is a lot action in that corner of the frame.
Is this some kind of refresh rate problem? I honestly am clueless. What can I do?

My parents have a 37-inch Toshiba, I have experienced the same problem when watching movies via the Dell laptop. It happens both in VLC player and Windows Media Player, and I am using a VGA cable to connect to the TV. The problem was still there when we used an S-video cable. It sounds like it might be something about these Toshiba TVs.

Can't connect MBP to LCD projector using DVI-TO-VGA adapter

I am trying to connect my MacBookPro to a Hitachi CP-X885 projector, which I normally connect an IBM Thinkpad to at 800x600 or 1024x768. I also use my MBP and the VGA adapter to connect to other LCD projectors and monitors (so my adapter works, as well as both systems, projector, cables, etc.). Problem is, that when I connect my MBP to the projector (I have to connect it via VGA as there is a 250 foot cable that goes to the front where the rear-projection takes place). When I do the "detect displays" nothing is detected. I also connected directly to the projector using a shorter cable, same thing (doesn't detect it). So, is the projector not supplying some type of signal to the output, that the MBP wants to see?)... is there a way to FORCE the MPB to have output? I know that if there is signal, it will display (we have LOTS of notebooks that display to the projector just fine, BUT have SEVERAL MBP's, and NONE of them will detect, and we've tried several adapters (just to be sure)... HELP!... is there some way to FORCE output from the MBP instead of it having to DETECT IT???

The URL you post does not answer David's original question. Also, it could potentially void his warranty because a firmware hack (and this is indeed a link to a "hack") is an unauthorized alteration to the hardware of his computer. ("Software" can only be installed on the hard drive and that hack is not installed on the hard drive, it's installed on the firmware on a chip inside the logic board.)

I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an LCD TV (with HDMI and S-Video ports)? I assume I would need to use the DVI to Video adapter that came with my computer to connect to my LCD tv. I'm just not sure which port I should use on the TV. The HDMI port is being used for digital cable.

For a 2010+ MBP you can connect with a Displayport to HDMI, which will include Audio.
With older MBP you will need a displayport to HDMI, if you want audio to the actually TV, then you will need to get a cable with either digital out from MBP to the HDMI, or USB audio mixed into the HDMI

VGA-in settings for 16:9 LCD HDTV

I have tried to wade through the info on this topic, but find myself lost, so apologies if this has already been covered. I have a Panasonic 50" LCD projection HDTV (PT-50LC13), and bought a Mac Mini to specifically use with this. I tried DVI input, but was not that impressed with the clarity, and don't currently own a DVI switcher (and would like to flip from DTV to computer), so I plugged the Mini into the RGB port with the DVI-VGA adapter. I get good readability from across the room at 800x600 at 60 refresh rate, so I'm not hyper about upping the resolution, but only have use of the center part of the screen (a 4:3), and would like to use the extra real estate on the sides (16:9, I guess). Several messages talk about using utilities like DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX to use this extra space, but in the context of DVI input and mapping pixels...
1) Is there a way to do this with VGA input?
2) I have scoured the manual for my TV, but can't identify the settings DisplayConfigX wants (refresh rate range, horizontal frequency range, pixel frequency, or default refresh rate). I don't want to guess and mess it all up.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the use of this TV with Mac Mini? (I'd like to avoid having to sink money on a DVI switcher, so I'd like to have a different video input than DVI - VGA, or I could get an S-video adapter if that'd be better...).

When you hooked the mini up via the DVI port, what resolution resulted? You say you weren't "impressed with the calrity" but I am curious to know what resolution caused you to be unimpressed. It seems the PT-50LC13 has a native resolution of 1280x720. Is that what your goal is and you can't get it through VGA? Sorry but need to understand these points to give advice.

How can I make my MBP 13" display onto DYNEX 40" HDTV without the left and right borders being blacked out? Using HDMI cable to connect. I have the picture up but I would prefer to have the full screen filled.

I don't know what to say. I have at least 7 TVs/external displays around here, and some do act differently, but all can go full screen by using the "video adjustment" on the unit. At least two of them started out new with the side bars you describe. A couple pushes of the proper button on the TV/display and it was full screen. If you're sure you tried the proper settings, then it would seem that you either have very bad luck purchasing a TV/display which will match up to your MBP's video output, or your MBP has an issue. Maybe you should make a free appointment with an Apple Store "genius" bar?

What cable do I need to connect my emac (ATI graphics model) to my LCD HDTV? The connection on the TV is DVI and the emac is mini-VGA. I also have s-video, component, and composite on my TV, as well as HDMI.

You'll also want to check that the HDYV can actually display a signal as small (in terms of pixels and refresh rates) as the eMac's; compare eMac Video Display to thr owner's manual for the HDTV.
