Connecting mic through TASCAM US-122L

What's surely a silly question: I'm considering the TASCAM US-122L to let me record voiceovers from my mic using Garageband. I notice the XLR inputs on the front are labeled L and R.
If I plug a single, mono mic into one or the other XLR input, will it record only to the L or R channel in Garageband?
Furthermore, any opinions on the 122L? My needs are simple: I just need to get a high-quality (broadcast quality) voiceover from a mic into GarageBand.

that would be debatable. going by likely tech specs, cheaper mic PREs would likely be in an inexpensive console. doing the A/D inside the computer means that you're using whatever electronics apple put in the machine (and it's hard to imagine they would spend large amounts on the A/D hardware compared to dedicated outboard gear ... of course that all depends on what you get as well)
Guess I don't understand what the 122L does. Digitizes the signal?

Tascam US-122L won't work on my new iMac

Just bought a brand new iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OSX10.6.2 and my Tascam US-122L audio interface won't work. It worked on my old PC (slowly!), and it works on my friend's iMac with OSX 10.5.8, but not on mine!
The Tascam control panel says "Device: none found", and the Garageband Audio input and output don't recognize the US-122L as being connected (they do on my friend's iMac with 10.5.8)
I've emailed Tascam - they're very quick to respond, but the suggestions of new drivers, uninstall and reinstall drivers, firmware etc have not made any difference.
Then I tried calling them - they told me it had nothing to do with 32 bit versus 64 bit, but that the new iMacs did not have enough power output from the USB ports to run the US-122L, and that I needed a powered USB hub. I've borrowed one to try, and guess what - still doesn't work!
Any suggestions would be welcome, since Tascam don't seem to be able to help.

I doubt that insufficient USB power is the problem (whether supplied from a powered hub or an iMac). The Tascam US-122L is a discontinued model, replaced by the "Mk II" version, but either should comply with the USB bus powered spec to draw less than 500 ma (2.5 watts) or it wouldn't work with any standard USB host & most (including iMacs) would display a warning about it drawing too much power.
I suspect this particular unit is somehow defective, in part because of the above & in part because of the "slowly" comment in the original post.

TASCAM US-122L problem

Hi.
I'm using a Tascam US-122L to record vocals in Garageband. When I highlight a vocal track, for some reason recently there is this awfully loud buzzing, crackling and hissing (when the track's monitor is turned on).
I've unplugged my mic from the US-122L and the noises are still there. Very loud. Tried many things and can't think of what to do next. It would appear to me that this is an internal problem with my US-122L, I'm guessing it's just fried or something.
Anyone else have a similar problem? Any thoughts on how I might fix this? Thanks very much.

Thanks for the suggestion, but i've updated the drivers and nothing seems to help. When you say your US-122L didn't "work" what do you mean? Was there no sound at all? Or was it all distorted like mine?

What computer operating system is involved in the Premiere Elements 11 and 13 issues? Same computer or different ones? Are you installing from purchased download installation files or from purchased installation disc? Does Premiere Elements 11 work completely on this computer whereas 13 will not?
Let us go through the typical drill so as to take nothing for granted.
1. Does the problem exist with or without the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled? Are you working with an individual home computer or in a
school or company network?
2. Are you running the program as Administrator and is there any "domain" account involved?
3. Is your video card/graphics card up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
4. Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on the computer with Premiere Elements?
Let us start by ruling in or out any of the above, and then we can decide what next.
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.

That message means that you have to restore the iPad now. There was a problem with the update. So connect the iPad to your computer and restore your iPad.

Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

Until the MacBook Air was released and supported in 10.5, the Mac did not consider USB to be a valid Networking Protocol. So set the Mac with USB solutions aside.
To connect computer-to-computer, you typically need to be using an Ethernet crossover cable. Assigning the same address to two Ethernet devices is never the solution -- it gives a Network Conflict, just as you said.
If your Windows box has some mechanism for Sharing its WiFi connection over Ethernet, you would have to follow its rules. Whether that means Manually assigning an Ethernet Address in the same range or the PC will provide the Address, I do not know.
Best success may be running an Ethernet cable to your Wired/Wireless Base Station, or using a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet-to-Wireless no drivers required) connected to the Mac's Ethernet port to give it WiFi access. What is your Base Station {Cable, DSL, FIOS, Other} ? Ethernet cables can be up to 100 meters (an American Football Field). Often the Base Station can be moved closer for more convenience.

For connectivity with SAP from Java, if you are looking at solutions based on the options SAP provides, then
1. SAP JCo --> You know it...but this one is recommended if you want to connect from a standalone Java application.
2. SAP JRA --> From applications inside JEE runtime environment.

Arch and Tascam US-122L USB 2.0 Sound Card

Hello,
I recently tried using my Tascam US-122L sound card, but I am not aware if there is support on linux for it or not. I tried the AUR, but it gave me information about a different Tascam card. I found this website which is interesting but must be outdated:

I did a simple lsusb and the card seems to be recognised correctly by the system:
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 0644:800e TEAC Corp. TASCAM US-122L
but alsamixer gives me the message:
"This sound device does not have any controls."
and the device is not chosen (sound is coming out of the original speakers instead of the US-122L Phones output).
Maybe I am just failing to switch to the card? Any help would be appreciated.

This soundcard is supposed to work ootb, there's a kernel module just for this card.

The controls (e.g. volume etc.) are hardware controls, so there's nothing to be done for the software. That's why alsamixer shows this message. In order to get any sound, you have to either configure this soundcard to be the default one(*), or you have to tell the player to use this soundcard(**).
(*) There is a gui which can do this for you quite easily, it's called asoundconf, you can find it in the AUR.
(**) You can do this e.g. with mplayer like this
mplayer file.end -ao alsa:device=plughw=2.0

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then Open System Preferences>Network>Configure>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS to use at Home, if you use it at 2 locations, just make a New Location for home.
