Connecting My Droid 3 to WiFi -- Does It Use Any of My 2gig Data Plan?

I finally purchased my first smart phone, the Droid 3.  I'm curious about connecting my phone to the internet using my WiFi network at home.  If I connect my phone to my home network to download apps/videos/web pages, will it use up any of my 2gig monthly limit?  I really can't afford more than $30 a month for data, so if WiFi doesn't use my my quota, it will really be fantastic.  I'm really new to smart phones, so I don't know too much about them.   Thanks for the advice, in advance!

I would also suggest reading up on what eats up data. 2 gigs is a pretty good amount of data for the average user. However, streaming music or video when you're not on wifi can burn through it real quick. Also, monitor your data use closely for a while until you get familiar with how much you are using so there aren't any surprises when you get your bill. There's a number you can call to check on data use or you can check it on your "my Verizon" account.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You need to turn the services you want to sync (calendars, contacts etc) on on both devices from settings > iCloud.

    Thank you for your response.
I had rebooted the router (several times, actually), to no avail.
I do not know the answer to whether MAC filtering is enabled on the router.  Have tried to find info about that, but unsuccessfully.  Router is an Arris TG852G, supplied by Comcast.  I would be surprised if MAC filtering were the issue, since in addition to the computer, we have successfully connected several other devices to the wifi, namely an iPad, a Android phone and a Kindle Fire - all able to access internet pages through the wifi, and all without a need to add the device to a MAC address whitelist.  To add to the mystery, the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone 4 to my network and access web pages.  He was unable to connect my iPhone, however, after trying for some time.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that an iPhone cannot connect to a wireless "n" router, only "b" or "g".  The Arris router is described as a n/g/b compliant router, and as noted the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone, so don't know why that would be the issue here.
By the way, my iPhone does connect wirelessly to my network at home.  This difficulty is at a second home.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

is there anything apple could do if i took it to one of their main shops???

    Sounds like a hardware failure.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and take it in for them to look at. It will probably need to be replaced.

  • HT204023 If my iphone is connected to the internet via wifi will it use my cellular data if I use it as a personal hotspot or will it use the wifi's internet???

If my iphone is connected to the internet via wifi will it use my cellular data if I use it as a personal hotspot or will it use the wifi's internet???
The wireless on my laptop brokebut I can still connect to my phone when I plug it in. My iphone is connected to the wifi but is this being transfered onto the laptop or is it using up my data???

Personal hotspot shares your cellular connection with other devices via cable, bluetooth or WiFi. If you turn on the hotspot, the phone will be disconnected from the WiFi network you are on and share access to the cellular connection. That's what it's for. It's using your data plan if that's what you're trying to do.

Record about my phone (bought in Verizon store and connected to Verizon for 4 years) has been corrupted and now I can not make any changes to my data plan. Several sessions with the technical support and management have not resolved this issue. Each time technical people and top managers promised that this issue will be resolve tomorrow and they will cal me. Nothing happend!! I can not even cancel my service not just to upgrade it. Completely locked.
    Any advice?
    Thanks.
    Alex.

Cannot figure out what your talking about since it makes no sense.
If you are the account owner you can go to the My Verizon web portal http://www.verizonwireless.com
You must log in with your cell number and your my Verizon portal password. Not the account pin.
Once there you can change your plan and services. However repeated incorrect login attempts will lock you out of the site. It a fraud prevention measure.
1-800-922-0204 call support with your cell number and or account number and account pin and they can assist you.
If you don't have the information then there is nothing they can do.
If you can verify who you are they may be able to reset your account access. But only if you are the account owner.
    Good Luck

Yes it will connect like the iPad, the point is, most iPhone supported carrier do not have phone plan without cellular data. You can choose a plan with minimal cellular data.

Not true. If it is official unlock by the carrier the iPhone was locked to, it will not re-lock.

  • Can I use Apple TV with unlimited data plan for my IPad without any other internet connection?

I Live in a weird area with no hardwired internet connection.
My only internet connection is my iPad Air's UNLIMITED DATA plan from AT&T... It's LTE and it works great for my usual work.
i Want to cancel stupid Direct TV acct and use Apple TV instead...
IS it possible to subscribe a TV account online by using my ipad air's unlimited data plan and watch in on my TV via Apple TV without  using any other type of home network account?

If you intend to use your iPads data plan then that will require use of the tethering/hot spot feature. As I said, you will not be able to use airplay, that needs a wifi LAN (home  network). This may change with IOS 8, but won't know for sure until the release.

  • Building an application that does not use any local program files or libraries

I need to build an application that will not use any local libraries or LabView program files(even if LabView is installed on the PC). I also am curious if anyone knows if there is a way to debug such an application(in it's compiled state).
Any help on these topics would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I am unclear on what you are trying to accomplish here. As the previous poster mentioned, if you enable debugging when building your application, you can remotely connect and probe the block diagram of the running executable. Executables use the run-time engine but could also access drivers or other run-times if using a specialized toolkit/module. This all depends on your application.

  • WiFi signal shows that it's not connected to the internet, but WiFi does work.

As you can see, it's not working the way it should. I took this snapshot just before I started typing this. I don't know if it's something I did, or a program, or something else, but it happened sometime a few months ago. I never bothered to ask because I figured it would have been because the system had to be updated, but I'm now running the latest version of Mac OS X Mavericks.
Any ideas on what may have caused the problem and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • Does Comcast Use My Computer to Cache Data for Wifi Guests?

Sometimes in the evening, between about 5:00 pm to about 10 pm, I get inexplicable lag spikes while playing my favorite online game.  Trace-routes in both directions don't show anything of note.  (The game developer has a tool that lets players trace from their game servers back to our computers, to help troubleshoot.) I know that nothing unexpected is running on my system because I have disabled virtually everything that I don't need in the Startup group; stuff like Windows Update, Java updater, etc., are all set to notify me of updates rather than download their stuff at random, and I have moved all of the recurring jobs in the Task Scheduler to do their work while I'm usually sleeping.  (Same with my anti-virus updates and scans.) Therefore, nothing should be making my hard disk LED light up unexpectedly, nor should anything be creating connection latency (as indicated by a meter in my game) that I can't find the cause of (via my trace-routes.) After a great deal of checking and eliminating possible culprits (including component overheating, et al), about the only thing left to blame is the Comcast Xfinity Wireless Gateway. (1)  Does anybody here know if this wifi system is caching user data on my hard drive?  Comcast's customer support people sure as heck don't have a clue. (2)  How about the bandwidth pipeline.  What if a neighbor or two is accidentally connecting to my wifi instead of their own home network and downloading fappable movies while I'm trying to become the #1 hardcore barbarian in Sanctuary?  If the data download transfer pipe is only so many megabytes wide, and I'm having to share that with the 2 folks mentioned above, plus 2 or 3 more doing heaven-knows-what, doesn't that make my own pipline thinner?  Could that be causing the non-network lag that I'm seeing in the trace-routes? I realize that I can disable this service, but I think there's a bigger picture here.   If, in fact, Comcast's Home Wifi  system is impacting its home customers in the manner I seem to be impacted, they need to start disclosing that. Thank you in advance to anybody who can provide answers to my questions, but please don't guess if you don't know for sure.  But if you're suffering the same problems I am, by all means, share your experience. My next step will be to turn the Wifi off during my gaming session for the next couple of nights to see if things change.  I didn't even know I could turn it off until I got to these forums tonight.  When I asked a Comcast rep shortly after receiving this new device, they told me "no," that the wifi could not be disabled.

Hello,The limits of the Copper aren't as minimal as you'd expect. Comcast usually runs Fiber on the Poles, then Copper to the Home. Copper Cable is able to achieve 1.25 Gbps. The Coaxial cables running to your modem take in 8 channels downstream and 4 channels upstream. This defines to a maximum of 38 Mbps download and 27 Mbps upload per channel. This means the maximum speed a Comcast Gateway can achieve is 304 Mbps download and 108 Mbps upload. Mind you can buy a modem compatible with Comcast that does 16 download channels and 4 upload channels or 608 Mbps download and 108 Mbps upstream. This could be higher, if signal is increased. However these are average. XfinityWiFi from what I've seen is 16 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. So the better question is, how many neighbors use your xfinitywifi? You should remember that you have Private Internet and xfinitywifi, your neighbors should have the Private Network and public network too. To answer another question, no software was put on your computer by Comcast for your modem, so no, it can't cache. Data caches locally to your computer, likewise the neighbor that is using your xfinitywifi is caching locally. The Gateway has no caching functionality. Your harddisk is constantly writing, Windows is sending data to it to update time, make sure it is still connected, and programs that may be open are still running.

  • How can I set up my airport express to extend my current wifi network? My current network does not use any airport device.

    Can anyone help me?

The only option would be to connect the AirPort to your existing network by wire. Most, if not all non-AirPort routers, will not be WDS compatible.

  • Does anyone have any information regarding securing data.

I want to secure data to assure that each department can only view their own PO's, req's, invoices and payments. Can anyone provide or direct me to the documentation on this? Thank you for any help.

    Hi,
You can try using security hierarchy or other appropriate document security control, but I'm afraid it only works for purchasing document
One way is to separate the OU, but that would take an implementation and maintenance effort

    Hello,
thank you for your message and sorry for the problems you have with your BB.
Have you checked your Firewall Settings and Application Settings, to make sure, that all apps have access to the internet and are not blocked? Also do you use the phone on BIS or BES, meaning do you use it personally or are you connected to a corporate enterprise server? In the last case, their might be restrictions from your server administrator.
I would try to go through all that and see if it works afterwards. Also go and check the application settings to make sure everything is correctly set up there.
The other thing I would look into is your router. Have you restarted your WiFi router as well? Checked on the Firewall there and everything?
As for the datapackage: There are several people here on the forums, complaining, that WiFi does not have priority over mobile data. This means, that if you have a dataplan and activate WiFi, you would still browse using your dataplan and not WiFi, unless you a) either turn off your mobile data connection, which makes you unreachable for calls, sms, etc. or b) if you are a prepaid user, wait until your balance is depleted, in which case the mobile data won't work anymore and you will connect through WiFi.
This is however different and should not affect you. Since you do not have a dataplan (at least that is what I understand from your posting), there is no dataplan to use and hence WiFi would have priority for connection with the net, since it is the only available source.
I would give it a bet, that it has something to do with your phones settings in any way, or with the router itself (though this is probably unlikely).
You can check your firewall settings by doing the following: Browse to your Settings Application or hit Options within any app. Go to advanced settings, check your security settings. You may also want to check your phones WiFi settings, by opening the connections app and open the WiFi configuration.
    Hope that helps, sincerely,
    Ben
