Connecting my home dvd player to my iMac

Is this at all possible? I don't use my television for anything but watching dvds. I would love to be able to get rid of it and just use my iMac for watching dvds. I have a code-free dvd player and a collection that is split between region 1 and region 2 with a few region 3 thrown in. I am almost out of flips between region on the computer.
What do I need to use my gorgeous 20" display to play my dvds from my regular household dvd player?
Thanks so much!

We've all been burned by the region code flaw in the Apple bundled DVD drive.
A much more satisfying solution is to get an external DVD drive for the Mac (one of the models that comes region-free or can be updated to full functionality). This will smaller, provide a much better picture, and, quite possibly permit you to bunr CDs and DVDs at much faster speeds than the antiquated built-in drive.
You can find external drives and enclosures at any decent computer store. Before you buy, check online to make sure that the unit is region-free or has a region-free fix available.

  • Connecting a VCR/DVD Player to a new iMac?

    Hi,
Just bought an iMac 17" with the 2.0 cpu. It is connected to the internet via a wireless dsl router elsewhere in our house. No problems, my daughter has put nearly 15-hours on the net with no complaints so far, fingers crossed, of course.
[I have an older Dell pc and a vcr/dvd player connected using RCA plugs directly from the player into my video & sound cards. I have the option of using the S-video cable as well.]
I asked the dealer if it was possible to connect a vcr/dvd player to the iMac for viewing only, and the salesperson did not know. Has anyone seen such a device? A customer at the Apple Store said that I might have to bypass Apple's OS and get a copy of Windows. I thought I was getting rid of the pc when I switched to the iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated!

I use a Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge. It's a firewire A/D converter that lets me capture composite or s-video to my iMac. I also use it to watch TV on my desktop using a VCR and Video Viewer utility.
I would recommend you use a firewire device to ensure maximum compatibility with the Mac (iMovie, etc.) with no need for drivers. In the case of the Hollywood Bridge, it was sold as a Windows only product. But as a firewire device, no software was needed for the Mac. It works great with all video/media software and is recognized like any firewire camcorder.
Although the Hollywood bridge isn't sold anymore, you can find them on ebay. Otherwise, you can research any video A/D converter device such as those sold by Pinnacle (pinnaclesys.com).

  • Question about multizone DVD player plugged to iMac ?

I want to buy a multizone DVD player to plug to my french iMac. How will it react to NTSC signal ? In short, does the monitor play NTSC/PAL ?

    Hi-
Please clarify- exactly how do you intend to connect your "multizone DVD player" to your iMac?
Is it a USB device, or something else? Are you using a TV tuner card, like an elgato, or something else?
You are aware that generally speaking that it is not possible to connect a DVD player to your iMac as if the iMac is a TV, right?
The only way you can connect a device like a DVD to an iMac directly is if you have one of the new 27 inch iMacs, and you make a connection with the mini display port.
Any other iMac will require either some sort of USB connection (assuming that the DVD device is just a DVD drive, and not a dedicated player), or an Analog/Digital converter of some sort, like a TV tuner USB device, etc.

  • IDVD disks won't play in home DVD player. They used to

    Hi, can you help
I'm using iDVD 5, iMovie 5, saving as disk image, mounting image and burning using Toast 6 to firewire LaCie D2 DVD burner. I have done this many times using same configuration, but not for a while. The disks created will play in the Mac, but not in the home DVD player.
I have tested the burner using a peecee and it creates other types of DVDs OK. This has got me stumped because I don't seem to be doing anything I haven't done before. I've tried different disks, cleaned the DVD player, everything. In addition I have tried burning disks from some old disk images I had saved from previous movie creations. Same result. Is the problem likely to be with Toast?

Still no luck. I have tried using some Verbatim -Rs and have the same results, if not worse, since the disks created won't mount in my Mac either.
In answer to klaus, yes the Mac does recognise the LaCie drive.
I'm starting to think the problem is with iDVD or iMovie since I have tried creating a disk image, copying to my Peecee, running through Shrink to generate a 'clean' series of Video_TS, Audio_TS folders, and burnt them from my peecee, which still doesn't work, even though I know that older and other movies play OK in my DVD player.

sorry, but you can only burn purchased movies to CD/DVD for backup purposes, not for viewing on a DVD player.

I want to use my home dvd player to burn dvds/cds onto my MacBook Air. I have an hdmi cord with thunderbolt connector. Where do I go from here?

Apps for OSX aren't in iTunes: they are in the App Store in your Applications folder. The payment method is the one registered in iTunes. There's no app actually called Yoga Studio, though there are several Yoga apps. There is an iOS app called Yoga Studio but it appears to have no OSX equivalent, though I haven't done a detailed search.

  • DVD writing speed for home DVD player

I was just wondering what is the best speed to burn movies for a home DVD player (2x, 8x or 16x). I have heard that you can have problems with a DVD player reading the disk if you burn at too high of a speed. I have 3 DVD players at home with the oldest being 2 years old.

I don't know about "best" speed. I do know that slower is better, your chances for a compatibility issue increase with the speed you burn. I've had good luck with 8x burns. Any higher than that has been iffy for me.

  • IDVD5 "Incorrect Disc Format" on Home DVD Player

My newly created DVD will not play in our home DVD player (which has played DVD's I have created in the past). I keep receiving the message "Incorrect disc format". I have burned my project to DVD-R's and DVD+R's. I have enough space, I am burning at "Best Quality", and have deleted the encoded assets before a re-burn because I edited the project. The DVD's I have created will play on my Mac and on other computers (PC's) in the house. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
I burned many DVD with iLife3, and it's work very well (dvr-r)
I read theses on many différent home dvd players and computers (IBM or MAC)
I upgrade to iLife4, same thing, but some reading errors...
I upgrade to iLife5, dvd play only on few home dvd players, and on IBM laptop, having lots of problems
I upgrade to iLife6, Only my MAC or a cheap magnasonic home dvd player read the "iDVD burned DVD-r).
What's happend, Apple change the encoding method of iDVD !
I bought a brand new Panasonic DVD-S77, and ... "disk error"
I try to burn 2x (like iLife3 or iLife4 in the past) same résult.
Im frustrated, I don't try Toast or Popcorn, iDVD is supposed to do the job!
I have my G5 since 4 years, I use TDK and Verbatim DVD-R (unfortunately made in China or Taiwan).

  • IDVD movie plays on DVD player not on imac

Have burnt DVD using iDVD plays fine on DVD player but not iMac that created it. Shows movie as VLC files

    Hi
If it follow DVD Standard - as it use to be when created in iDVD. You see at least two folders on the DVD
    - VIDEO_TS
    - AUDIO_TS (empty and must be so)
Then the usual origin to this problem are:
    - Brand of DVD used (Many Cheap brands DO NOT WORK as Video-DVDs) - I only use Verbatim
    - BURN SPEED - If this is not set down there are LOT's of Burn Errors - Many stand alone DVD-Players can handle this but the Mac is very picky - I always set this down as slow possibly (x2 most often ev. x4 NEVER HIGHER)

  • Can i burn quicktime files to watch on  home dvd player?

is it possible to burn some movies i have downloaded onto my computer, which i watch with quicktime and real player etc, to be able to watch them on my home dvd player as a film?
when i burn them now, it just does them as files and it wont play on my dvd player?

Yes. There are various ways & 3rd party software that will do all the work for you.
I am assuming you are trying to burn using Disk Utility?
It’s a good idea to verify the disk image before burning it. Simply mount the image, and open you DVD PLAYER app. When that’s done, go to FILE and OPEN VIEDO_TS folder. Choose the VIDEO_TS from within the mounted image and then press play. It should play back now as a dvd.
Step 1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
Step 2. Click Burn on the Disk Utility toolbar (upper left).
Step 3. Navigate to where you saved the DVD image.
Click on the image file, then click the Burn button. Do not drag and drop the image file into Disk Utility during this step.
Step 4. Insert a DVD when prompted and proceed to Burn it.
Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
    Open Disk Utility.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Connecting a Sony DVD player to Sony STR-DH750 AV Receiver with RCA cables

I have connected a Sony DVD player with RCA cables to  Sony STR-DH750 AV Receiver at the VIDEO inputs. I get audio, but no video. How do I connect the DVD player to the AV receiver to get both audio and video?

    Hi JB4,
Are you using HDMI cable in addition to your RCA connection? This HDMI cable is from the receiver going to the TV using the HDMI OUT port. Another option, you are using the RCA yellow + red&white right? you may connect the yellow cable directly to your TV if it has yellow port for video.
    Thanks.

  • I can't play dvd from idvd in home dvd player

I did a project in imovie 11 and add that project to idvd 7.1.2 and when i burn the dvd in a dvd-R or dvd+R it will play on any computer but not on my home dvd player. what is the problem??

To add to Bengt's recommendations follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IDVD burn plays poorly in home DVD player

Help! I have several iDVD burns that play poorly in my home DVD player, a Sony SLV-D300P. So we went out and bought another DVD player, the Samsung DVD-V5500 and the same is true! The audio cuts out, the picture pixalizes and then it all together freezes. In several Mac computer DVD players the iDVD burns play perfectly.
Thank you in advance for helping me with this one.

You definitely have a burn quality issue.
Be sure you have the latest drivers for you dvd burner. That was the fix back in the early dual G5 days, and may still apply.
Of course, you can make sure that you have a DVD that works, and that may not be the ones at Apple, but surprisingly, another brand. I think many people like TDK.
A final "workaround" might be to simply burn your disks more slowly (at 4x instead of higher speeds)... The burn time is usually the least of the amount of time that a project consumes, so I wouldn't worry too much.
As a test, take the encoded file that was burned to your dvd, and burn it onto another dvd in another machine. That will test your current system, as you may have a bad dvd burner, bad dvd's, need drivers, or..??
    Good luck.
    Halrey
