Connecting my iPod to my mac. firewire or usb, or both???

my new iPod came with a usb connector. my older iPod (3 years ago) came with a firewire connector. i still have the old connector. can i connect using either my new usb or older firewire connector? which is better? is there any difference? why didnt apple ask me if i was a mac or pc user when i ordered it, so they could send me a firewire connector instead of the usb connector that they did send?
usb or firewire? does it make any difference? firewire must be faster right?
thanks for your help

sync? what do you mean?
Sync means to connect the iPod to the computer and load songs onto it.
It will update/sync only with USB.

  • HT4929 I have 2nd generation I-pod which does not meet requirements for ICloud.  However, I was told that after I moved to ICloud if I connected my iPod to my Mac via the USB connection that my calendar and contacts would sync, but this didn't happen.

I have a 2nd generation Ipod and just moved to Icloud.  I had been told my an Apple tech that although my contacts and calendar would not sync automatically I could connect the Ipod to my Mac via the USB port and ITunes would sync the calendar.  Now I find that this is not happening.  I am not happy that I will have to enter/edit calendar and contact info on two devices.  Is there something I can do to fix this problem?  Thanks.

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • How do I sync music onto old iPod when my music is on iTunes match? I have connected the iPod to my mac but it indicates no music to sink (as my music is in the cloud). I assume there is a simple way to resolve without downloading all music onto my mac?

How do I sync my music onto an old iPod when my music is located on iTunes match? I have connected the iPod to my mac but it indicates no music to sink (as my music is stored in the cloud). I assume there is a simple way to resolve without downloading all music onto my mac as this would be ridiculous?
Any halp with this would be excellant.
    Thanks :P

    Hi,
Your old pod can only sync with music that is physically in your itunes library and on your hard drive. Therefore there is simple way to resolve is to download your music to your hard drive.

Try using RecBoot to kick it out of recovery mode. If that does not work, try a manual install, as outlined in link below. If it STILL keeps entering recovery mode, you most likely need a new logic board.

  • How to connect my ipod with my mac

    Hello...
I'm trying to connect my ipod touch with my mac book pro and for some reason the ipod is not paired, it is conected and the mac is finding the ipod but not pairing it
The arror i get at my ipod is:
Make sure "maci" (my mac name) is turned on, in range, and is ready to pair.
What do I need to do to make it work?
    Tanx

This is not feature of the ipod touch.  You cannot connect to a computer or another phone or device.
It is for stereo headsets/speakers and some peer-to-peer apps from the app store.

  • Sometimes my iPod shuffle (4th gen) won't turn on. Though the battery is fully charged. I usually connect my iPod to the mac so it will turn on. Why is that?

If i not use my ipod for a times, it will turn off automatically and won't turn on. Please give the answer. My ipod is new.

    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to make a backup
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    - Next reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
and try making a backup again. If you can't then there is no way of getting the info off the iPod unless data recovery company can do it. Not cheap.
    - If photos are in an existing iPod backup (iTune>Preferences>Devices  for iTunes backup or an iCloud backu) then restore from that backup. See the restore topic of:
    iOS: How to back up
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

  • Can you connect an IPOD used on Mac onto a Window PC ?

I have tried to connect a friend's IPOD which he used on a Mac Platform, onto my Windows PC platform. Itunes nor Windows Explorer seems to recognize my friend's Ipod.
Does anyone know a way to read a Mac Ipod onto a PC and vice or versa?
    Thanks

To read a Mac-formatted iPod on a PC, you need third-party software, such as XPlay (http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/).
Although it's not supported by Apple, Macs will read a PC-formatted iPod just fine.

  • Connecting old ipod to new mac after old mac died

Well, I spilled water on my old ibook and she died a slow horrible death. I REALLY want to be able to copy my 800 songs that are still on my ipod onto the G4 that my friend gave me. It SEEMS like the only way to do this is to do some kind of formatting with the itunes library on my old system. Obviously, this isn't going to happen. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • IPod Touch question about  Firewire and USB cable

I just bought a USB 2.0 extension cable on ebay to charge my 64 GB iPod Touch. I also bought a USB wall socket that I was going to plug the extension cord in to (I haven't received the wall socket yet). Come to find out when testing the extension cord on my laptop I get the message " charging is not supported with this accessory". I thought that was the case only with firewire cables. But this is supposed to be USB 2.0 What's the deal? Can a firewire cable look like a regular USB cable? And does anyone have a work around that I can use?

I realized yesterday that I had another USB wall jack which I use at work to charge my IPT. I took it home with me plugged it into the wall and tried to charge the IPT without the USB extension cord, and it worked fine. When I connected the USB extension cord, I got the same message, "Charging is not supported with this accessory." I'm so frustrated. Mainly because I don't understand what is causing this issue and therefore don't know how to remedy it. I would buy another extension cord, but I don't know if that one will work either.
Here is the link to the USB extension cord that I purchased on ebay:

  • Why is it that when I connect my iPod to my car stereo through USB, some of the songs don't appear and play when these songs are on my playlist normally?

    Hello all
This has been bugging me for a little while. I bought myself a new bluray player awhile back and it has a USB hookup for ipods. This goes the same with my vehicle too. I have a few good playlists with some great songs, however, when i hooked it up to my bluray player, some of the songs didn't appear in the playlist that are not normally there. I disconnected the ipod and had a look on the screen and sure enough the songs are there, but they are just not appearing on the bluray player. This only happens for some songs, not all of them. I was disappointed at this because I really wanted to hear my songs. So I decided to download the WHOLE album off of itunes from which I got the song from and sure enough, this time the song appeared on my bluray player and it played in the playlist.
Why is this? Is there a way to make it so that I can have all the songs play without downloading all of the albums?

Did the original songs that do not appear on the car player play in the Music app on the iPod? Sometimes glitches happen and they do not. Also, If y ohave a 5G iPod/iOS 7, purchase songs  will show with an cloud icon by them if they are not downloaded if Shall All is turned on in Settings>iTunes and App Store

  • Connect my ipod to both my mac and my pc?

All of a sudden my 3G ipod will not connect to my Mac. I have looked in the classic ipod discussions support section and other people are having the same issue and solution has been found. While the problem is being fixed (hopefully) by Apple, can I sync my iPod with my Dell computer that is running Windows XP? If I can sync it with my Dell, will the iPod get erased and only have the songs that are on the Dell or can the ipod retain the songs I already have on it that were from my mac?
TIA for any and all help!

If it's a +3rd gen+ iPod (touch wheel and touch buttons in a line below display), it's getting to be about 5 years old, so it may have become faulty. The "iPod classic" discussion category is for the NEW +iPod classic+ (the 6G iPod).
Also, the 3G iPod is designed to work with FireWire, not USB; it will not recharge over a USB connection. So if your Dell does not have a six-pin FireWire port, it will not work well. Also, iTunes will reformat an iPod for Windows the first time you connect it. PC's cannot read the Mac format.
If you have your songs in your iTunes library on the Mac, I would try doing the following.
Connect the iPod to the Mac. Run Disk Utility (quit iTunes if it's running). Does the iPod show up in the sidebar? If it does not, disconnect the iPod and put it into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
then connect it to the Mac.
Once it shows up in Disk Utility, select the iPod hard drive (not the volume intended under the drive) and go to the Erase tab. Click on the Erase button (to reformat the iPod's drive). Note: This will obviously erase your songs on the iPod, so you will need to re-sync from the iTunes library.
If the erase process completes successfully, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. iTunes should treat it like a "new" iPod, but do not sync it initially. Instead, use the Restore button immediately on the iPod's pane in iTunes. This will install the latest available software and reset it to factory settings. If Restore completes successfully, you can then sync it and set it up as desired.
If erasing in Disk Utility does not complete successfully (or you can't get it to show up in Disk Utility), the iPod is probably faulty. The most likely problem is the hard drive, but it may also be the logic board.

  • Connecting IPOD 5 to mac/pc's -

    hi
I installed my ipod on my PC
when i hook it up to my friends mac to share songs via his itunes, he does not recognise it
songs on my ipod are there in light grey but not 'clickable'
can't transfer from his itunes (mac) to my iPOD (PC SET UP)
    THX for you help
      Windows XP Pro

If you simply want to connect the iPod to a Mac and play the music on the iPod throught the computer, I don't believe that is illegal anywhere.
Connect the iPod. Set the iTunes prefs -> iPod to Manually manage songs and playlists.
Select the iPod as Source and use iTunes to play the songs on the iPod.

  • New Mac user trying to connect my IPOD mini

I'm a novice Mac user, so this may be a dumb question. I had a PC and that is what I used my IPOD mini with. My hard drive crashed taking my ITunes library with it. I have it all on my mini and was told a way to upload back into my hard drive. But, when I connect my IPOD to the Mac it says it doesn't recognize non-Mac versions. Does anyone know if there is still a way to make this work?
    Thanks!

iPodRip, a 3rd party app can do this for you. You can download it from versiontracker.com.
