Connecting My Passport Ultra through my router

Hi.I just bought a My Passport Ultra (2TB) and I want to connect it to my router so that I can use it to backup my PC and laptops in the house. The tech at the store said it would work, but I can't find any documentation telling how to do it. Anything I've read talks about connecting the Passport directly to my PC (or laptop).  My router is a D-LINK DIR655 and there is a spare USB port in the back. It's wasn't as easy as I thought (plug the My Passport into the router USB port and the computers would see it).Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

What backup program are you trying to use? WD Smartware (either pro or standard) cannot work with a drive set up like this, only with "true" NAS drives like the MyCloud, or with MyPassport drives directly connected by USB. But another solution which can write to a networked drive may be able to do so, or perhaps to use a virtual hard drive file set up on the networked MyPassport. I've used something like that before to enable Windows 7 backup to write to my NAS drive.

I have a WRT54G wireless router ... I want to connect a new laptop through it ... but I need either a network key or a password ... cant locate these .. can anyone help?

To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier. Go to wireless tab. Go to wireless security sub-tab. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key

  • New modem, no longer able to connect to the internet through the router.

I have a WRT54GS router which worked fine.  My modem died and I got a new modem through my ISP, Comcast.  I can't get the router to work through the new modem.  There must be something simple I'm not doing, because there was nothing wrong with the router before.  Is there a simple solution to my problem?
    Thanks,

Open the set up page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button. Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"". Click on enable...Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for the entire network and then, try to go online.

  • I am unable to get a connection with my ipad through my router but I am able to get in when at my friend's house

I am unable to get a connection with my ipad with my wifi router.  Will I need to upgrade my router

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Updating firmware when I can't get an internet connection through the router

I am trying to update the firmware for WRT54G V8, but some of the instructions indicate I need to have the router connected and be connected to the internet.  I cannot get an internet connection through the router.  Can I upgrade firmware without being connected to the internet through the router.  (I have had this router for about a year and a half with no problems until now.)

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware without an Internet connection.
To upgrade the firmware, first download the new firmware into a computer that you can wire to your router.
Next, power down your entire network.
Then wire the computer to a LAN port on the router.
Disconnect all other wires from the router.
Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    Power up your computer.
Login to the router, and do the firmware upgrade  (it will likely take several minutes).
    Power down your entire network.
Next you need to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Unable to allow Family Laptop access to Web through my Router

I have a desktop and laptop wirelessly linked in a LAN using a DSL modem and a Linksys WRT54GS router.
    This is working OK.
I now want to allow my grandson access to the WEB using his laptop when he visits me.
I have XP Pro installed on both my LAN machines whereas the grandson's laptop has Vista.
However when he enters my router's password on his laptop he is unable to connect to the WEB through my router.
I notice than in the WIRELESS SECURITY section of my router I have the firewall set to "BLOCK WAN REQUESTS".
Could this be the reason for this failure to connect ?
I am reluctant to change any settings needlessly.

Evidently the " BLOCK WAN REQUESTS " is not the reason why your grandson's vista laptop , because other wireless computer were able to get online.
make sure that you have the right network key
    - click on the tab wireless
    - click on wireless security ( underneath security )
    - what is our sec. mode?
► if  wpa personal / wp2personal / wpa radius you most like could check ahead if the password is right ( the password is in: passphrase, wpa shared key, etc.. )
► if wep , what is your encryption? your tx key or default transmit key? if 1 the basically what you need is what is written in key 1
     - check if wireless mac filter is disabled , if enabled and permit only , make sure that mac address of the wireless lan card of your grandson's laptop is in the list.

  • Can't connect to the internet through router

I have an HP Pavillian DV6 laptop, DSL connection through ATT, a Linksys wireless N router.  It had been working fine for abourt 7 months, Then all of a sudden I lost my network connection.  I clicked in the right hand corner to connect to the network & it was gone.  I have tried to re-run the software for the router & I get to where it wants to connect to the internet & it won't.  I have tried to log into the router to run the setup on the internet explorer page using 192.168.1.1 I now can find my network, I click connect, it says it is connected, but no internet.  I can connect to the internet if I plug the modem directly into my laptop, but once I connect from the modem to the router, it will not connect to the internet. I have been searching HP, CIsco, & even my maker of my wirelkess card to see if there were any driver updates.  My wireless card says it is up to date.  I tried to rest my BIOS, that didn't help either.  I'm stumped, & I've spent entirely too much time trying to figure this out with no success, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Reset your router to defaults. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure the router so it would connect to the internet. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure your wireless settings. Here's the procedure. I suggest you set your SSID to something unique. In addition, set your wireless security to WPA or WPA2. Don't use WEP as it is insecure.

  • Connecting Mac mini to internet through Xfinity router

This one took me a couple weeks to figure out, and I've seen a couple of similar posts in the forums, so I decided to post my findings here in the hope that it will help someone else.
Short version of the problem: I have a Mac mini (mid-2010 server version) that would connect to the Technicolor TC8305C WiFi router that was supplied to me by Comcast, but it would not connect "through" to the internet.
Details: The Mac mini connected automatically to the Wi-Fi (via DHCP) of the router, but nothing would connect "through" to the internet -- not Chrome, not Safari, not Mail, not the App Store, nothing. This was baffling because every other device in the house (3 laptops, 2 iPhones, and an Apple TV) all connected just fine. I checked all of the settings in the Network pane of System Preferences, comparing the Mac mini's against each of the laptops; all of the settings were the same (default, "out-of-the-box" settings). I thought maybe the problem was something at the OS level because the Mac mini was running Snow Leopard server and the laptops were not (two were running Mavericks, and one was running Leopard).
Here's where it gets weird... I connected the Mac mini to the router using an ethernet cable and everything worked normally for the wired network device. I was able to use the App Store to update the OS on the Mac mini to Mavericks. However, after I disconnected the ethernet cable, the problem came back and the Wi-Fi would connect to the router but not to the internet.
I double-checked that any "server" software on the Mac mini was turned off -- e.g., that it was not trying to serve as its own DHCP server. As I suspected, none of these services were on, so that wasn't it either.
In that same vein, I tried setting a static IP for the Mac mini in the router's control interface. Again: no luck.
Lastly, I got this weird idea that the only remaining difference that I hadn't tried was the pre-configured IP address prefix octets.
Solution: I reconfigured the router to use 192.168.x.x (like my previous router did) as the network prefix instead of the 10.0.x.x prefix that it uses by default. After I made that change in the router, everything fell into place and the problem went away. I never did figure out the reason this change was significant, but as I said -- it was the only thing that worked.

    Interesting, thanks for the report/tip!

  • Quality Server not connect through SAP Routing String

    Hi,
When remotely access client SAP through SAP routing string in Quality Server it shows error message as
    "timeout occured
Location : SAP router 37.11 on solman

    Version : 37

Here GUI version is 7.1(where from connecting). Client SAP version is ECC 5.0 and they use GUI 6.4 version. But Development server is being connected through SAP Routing String.
    Regards,

You might want to check following things:
Can you do a ping to the IP address you specified?
Is the data correct (ip, host, system number,...)?
Is the gateway with system number 00 running on the server?
Did you install the SAP RFC SDK dll's?

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • Router (RV120W) and It isn't letting me connect to the cameras through wifi.

I install the new router (RV120W) and It isn't letting me connect to the cameras through wifi or inside the local network, either with local ip or public ip, no matter which device I use, pc or my phone. I can access to the cameras from outsite, if I disable the wifi in my phone, I can see the cameras using the 4G network typing my public ip.
Any suggestion that helps me to troubleshooting.
    Thanks

Thank you Luis for your Quick response.
as you said I disable the host firewall, but the issue was still happening. so what i did was reconfigure the router again from scrach and it worked..
now what I'm experiencing is that same router model allow me open the cameras interface through the web, but from WAN it says "Authentication Failed" and inside the WLAN allow me to authenticate with the same credentials.. the only thing different is the brand of the cameras DVR .
    any suggestion..
    Thanks once again.

  • IMacs won't connect to the internet through a Double Router Network.

    Hey guys,
I have 4 computers in the house, 1 is an XP system, 2 are iMacs running latest version of Leopard, the last is my Macbook Pro running latest Snow Leopard. The reason for the two router solution is as follows: The connection where the modem and router were previously was unable to broadcast a signal to the other side of the house (concrete). So I placed a wired router on the end where the modem is, and through cat cables placed in the walls, placed a wireless router on the other side of the house.
I have already set up the wireless router to become a wireless access point by turning the operating mode to router instead of gateway, and changed the internal ip to 192.168.2.x. All in all my macbook connects to the internet just fine through the router now turned access point and picks up the IP of 192.168.1.x (from the wired router directly connected to the modem), but the iMacs are picking up 192.168.2.x ips which have no connection to the internet.
I have tried to renew the DHCP lease (which should pull the 192.168.1.x since the wireless router has DHCP turned off) but it still wants to connect to 192.168.2.x. Any ideas or solutions to fix this?

hi i have read your problem but i can be wrong... because suppose to be your system have working before. i think can exist conflicts between modem ip address and router ip address. first disconnect your modem from your router put in your internet explorer 192.168.1.1 and if your router has password live user name area in blank. and put in password area admin and push return. when appear the setup menu ( must to be in basic setup menu by default) search the text Local IP Address 192.168.1.1 and let change for 192.168.2.1 and do click in save settings button turn off your modem your router and connect everything and turn on them. check if you get access internet service.
