Connecting Nano to Harman Kardon amp

Dear audiophiles,
I just purchased a new Harman Kardon stereo receiver HK 3385. It is designed to use with an iPod and comes with the audio/composite-video cable to connect the two devises. Upon connecting it up I discovered that the volume needs to be all the way up on the Nano to have normal volume come out of the stereo speakers.
This receiver is rated 80 watts x 2 driven at full power at 8 ohms
The speakers are Onkyo HS-15 from 1980's 45 watt max, 20 watt rated each speeker; 8 ohms.
I use them in my work shop.
Q 1. is it normal to turn the Nano all the way up when connecting to a stereo then control volume with the amp's volume control?
Q 2. does this hurt the Nano/drain the battery too fast?
Yes I will get a powered doc when I figure out what I am doing here and look into what is available.
Q 3. any recommendations on an ac powered doc?

Hope it is ok that I move this up to current viewers. My questions and the answers to them should be interesting to others as well.
I have pursued the powered dock and people seem unhappy with what is available to buy right now.
A retired electrical engineer came into our store the other day and I asked him. He said the out put voltage was on the order of one volt peak to peak for what that is worth.
He said he thought that running it at full "volume" setting would be a bad idea without a powered dock.
He had no experience with a Nano however.
I have since cut back a bit on the setting but it must still be near full blue bar to get much punch out of the system.
He said he thought the dock would help significantly with the volume problem.
The whole reason I bought the nano is to take music to my work shop so I don't have to have a computer in that dusty environment. I won't be using the nano for much else. So please forgive my persistence here. I don't want to ruin a new Nano battery in a few uses.
Is this truly hard on the battery?
Will the dock help improve volume?
Which one is good?
Barking in the night.

  • Has any1 tried the Harman Kardon Drive + Play?

Ok , i saw this on the apple store, i was wondering if any1 has tried it? I am almost at driving age and i am getting a new truck when i can drive and i want my nano to be incorpurated into it in a cool way. this looks cool, but i just dont know. in two years do u think it will come out with a color screen? and how does it work with the nano? I installed the system into my 2006 Lexus IS250. There's a grounding issue with my car when an iPod is plugged into both the auxiliary port and the power (not involving the drive+play, but wanted to let people know). I solved the issue by buying "The Silencer" by Monster, which does a good job of cutting out the feedback. The system itself is pretty good. Yeah, there are some issues with finding songs; the spring-loaded twist knob pales in comparison to the iPod scroll wheel. But with my car, I can hide everything in my center console while seeing what songs I'm playing, which beats opening the console every time I want to change a song or pick a different playlist. I previously had an iJet RF remote control, but it just wasn't as good.
The display is small enough that it can be optimally placed. You'll have to try it out for both that and the control knob.
Note that if you do install this, software issues will require you to downgrade your iPod software to the 2004-11-15 update until Apple can fix the problem. Search the forums for my other post.
You have to try out this system for yourself; you can get it at Circuit City and they have a 30-day return policy. Just install it by hand in your car (don't mount anything) and see if it works first. Then, if it does, get it professionally installed; otherwise, return it.

Has anyone tried to connect iPad 2 to harman kardon Nova 2.0 speakers?

I had the same question and unfortunately the answer is no. The iPad wasn't designed to be part of a stereo system. Check Best Buy or Radio Shack even Walmart.

  • What accessory to use when connecting to Harman Kardon AVR

    Hi,
we use a Harman Kardon AVR 145 for our audio at home. Please can anyone advise me what accessory to use for connecting the iPad? We have the bridge for our iPod, but that is no good of course. Please advise on a cable to use. Thanx!

Sorry, but you'll have to either wait for someone owning that equipment to show up or for someone to take the time and trouble to look it up and see what sort of connection options are provided on it. Or, if you want to perhaps move the process on a bit more quickly, and seeing as how you have it right there, you could always provide that info.

  • Harman Kardon avr 1700

    Hi,
I noticed Best Buy is selling the Harman Kardon avr 1700 for $250. I am hesitant to buy because I noticed it has a different type of amplifier/power supply, type D I think. The receiver weights 12.8 lbs vs 18lbs.
Has anyone listened to the Harman Kardon 1700 in Best Buy stores. I am curious of the sound quality. There are no reviews of the sound quality besides Best Buy reviews on the product page.
Best Buy black friday ads show that the Denon AVR 1613 will be on sale for $275. I was curious how the HK 1700 would sound compared to the Denon 1613. If the Denon sounds alot better I would wait and buy it online from BB on black friday.  the specs show that the Denon 1613 and HK 1700 have comparable features for the most part.
I bought JBL CS 480 surround sound system and need a good receiver to power it.  Will accept other suggestions too.
    thanks,
    Mike

I'm  fan if the line level Denon units out.
Real audiophiles test amps without all the effect processing.
    Real audiophiles aren't buying $300.00 AVR's.
The Audessy MultiEQ is still the better of the pinking technologies.
So you have to be rich to be an audiophile? Thanks for the 411, but I do not subscribe to your aristocratic values, sir.
I said nothing of the sort. I simply stated that audiophiles don't buy $300.00 AVR's. Most of them most likely aren't buying their gear at Best Buy either, at least not outside of the Magnolia section. Most audiophiles are still buying seperates rather than an AVR because let's face it, for music, which is what most audiophiles really care about, $300.00 AVR's simply aren't that great.
However, $300.00 AVR's can be great for multichannel. The basic internals like the DSP are the same across most model lines on most companies AVR's. The differences in price comes solely from things like the number and types of connections, network or serial connectivity, and the software features in the AVR. Most AVR's under $300.00 don't come with helpful features like Pinking Tools (Audyssey MutliEQ, EzSet) or volume balancing and loudness adjustment features like Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume.
For that price getting MultiEQ, Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume the Denon is a great bargain for anyone that's looking for an entry level AVR.

  • Harman kardon go +play

i recently bought the harman kardon go + play, however i cannot get the s-video connection to work with my tv. the ipod is an 80gb classic and i have it set to video out, however it comes up with the error message "connect video accessory" and won't recognise the hk go + play when its connected, any ideas anyone ??

The latest crop of iPods require an authentication chip in video cables. It sounds as if you have a device which doesn't meet these newer requirements.

  • Harman-kardon speakers and various loud noises( mac mini)

My Harman-Kardon ball speakers, which have served me well from my old Cube days, are going loopy.
They have been happily USB connected to my 17" studio display (and powered from it) Recently, I've been hearing clicking noises, which can turn to a very loud 'rushing' sound if the computer has been active for more than an hour. I know some have had software issues with their sound systems due to 10.4 updates, but none reported very loud sounds. I came home yesterday to what sounded like an apartment fire alarm, it was that loud, but it was only my 'sleeping' computer. The noise ended when I pulled out the USB.
Could it be software? I don't want to buy new speakers if it might be. Or, time for knew speakers?-- if so, any advice? Happy New Year. Kevin

While it may not be all that helpful, I had some issues with an Altec lansing speaker set on my G5, where background noise was abnormally high almost all the time, and from time to time there would be rushing noises which grew very loud. It turned out to be a faulty USB hub, even though the speakers were not USB connected.
To troubleshoot your system, I would disconnect everything external bar the basic essentials, including any hubs or other devices, even the keyboard and mouse, and test the system that way. It would not be expected for software or MacOS itself to cause the sort of effects you describe.

  • Harman Kardon

OK I'm about to give up and abandon my prejudice for surround sound. I suppose I can still listen in stereo and at least the kids have the option of using it when I'm not there.
Someone has told be there is a Harman Kardon receiver in cash converters for just over a £ 100, no idea what model and I don't suppose it's the latest model but it does sound quite cheap and in 'as new condition', so I don't suppose it will hurt too much.
Not being all that interested in this area I really don't know what I'm buying, does anyone know whether this is a good brand or even better know of any issues with the tv. Can't say I've heard of it before or seen it mentioned on these forums, unlike Yamaha and Onkyo. So either no one here has this brand or there aren't any reported issues.
I realise without a model number it's difficult to comment on the receiver, but I'm more interested in a comment on the brand at this time. Whilst I haven't had any interest in receivers to date, I'm not completely blind to the technical side and should be able to decide from the specs exactly what it does, I just won't know how well this brand does what it does.

Many high-end audio manufacturers to my mind though have lost out with the digital 'revolution', as reasonable quality goods are available for often a fraction of the cost of similar items 20 years ago.
Just to expand on that, before widespread DVD and home cinema options were available, specialist hi-fi stores could still do well from high-end stereo audio kit.
These days though consumers want kit that is a jack of all trades and the perception of value for money factors highly. 'True hi-fi' products have been marginalised by the home cinema factor, and many hi-fi stores who used to turn their noses up at anything other than pure stereo have had to adopt cheaper AV kit simply to stay afloat.
As with all purchases there's often a law of diminishing returns with hi-fi. The £5000 separates system will be far better than the £500 all in one mini system, but not 10x as much.
How do you attract the average consumer to spend a few hundred pounds on a 'quality' DVD player when they're £15 in Argos or Asda - it has to do a heck of a lot more to justify the price tag, whereas as an early adopter I was happy to pay nearly £600 for my first DVD player some 10 years ago. I would be very reluctant to do so now.
High-end manufacturers also sometimes seem completely out of touch with reality in terms of pricing - for example I've just had an invite from the local hi-fi dealer to go to an evening demo of a Naim hard drive based player.
The spec includes 2x400GB mirrored internal drives, USB and network functionality, and undoubtedly very high quality audio circuitry. It can output/playback non-DRM FLAC at up to 24 bit 192kHz which admitedly AppleTV cannot, but even though I'd love to have one for it's sonic prowess, I have to wonder how much better it can sound compared to the AppleTV when it costs £4,500 vs £200! The interface also looks clunky - onboard TFT display - you may be able to connect to a TV but looks like it's composite or S-video only! You appear to be able to connect a keyboard/mouse and control from a PC.
Now I'm sure the Naim device will sound very good, and if it includes a high-end CD player anyway might be more justifiable, but in terms of VFM AppleTV blows it out of the water.
I guess there are plenty of people out there though that have no desire to use a computer and would be happy to pay for a high-end all in one solution.
Sorry to digress - more of a blog type comment!

  • Harman Kardon USB Soundsticks (1st Gen) Screeching/Static

After upgrading to 10.6/10.6.1, I now get periodic, short screeches/static on my USB Harman Kardon Soundsticks (the USB-only version), regardless of the source of sound. So playing music is definitely now intolerable.
Anyone else experiencing USB sound related issues?
This is the last straw for me in using USB-based speakers as I've they always "disconnected" and were no longer accessible when performing large file transfers with USB drives. Only a restart would make them accessible again. With this new issue in Snow Leopard, I'm ditching them for mini-plug based speakers.

Don't give up +so fast+. I'm trying to find a way to lower the USB SoundSticks' volume for years now without luck. But other than that, they still work fine with 10.6.1 over here!
I know of the static noise problem, but I only had that years ago with 10.3 and/or 10.4 and it was caused by my USB hub. Connecting them directly to my Mac worked fine and since using the following setup I never had a problem:
MacBook Pro (had several models and PowerBooks before) - Cinema Display - Belkin USB hub - SoundSticks
Yes, there's 2 hubs involved and it works fine. I use the somewhat older 30" Cinema Display and this Belkin hub: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=158910

  • Harman Kardon SoundSticks Wireless bluetooth on Yosemite problem

    Hi there,
Since upgraded to Yosemite, I have problems with re-connecting my Harman Kardon SoundSticks Wireless (via bluetooth) to MacBook Pro (retina 15" late 2013). Every time when that happen, I need to restart the speakers to make them connect again.
Is there some solution for this problem?
    Cheers!

I’m having the exact same problem but with the Harman Kardon Esquire Mini, also on the Macbook Pro, same year as yours. It started when I still had Mountain Lion iOS. They first said it was a hardware problem then installed Yosemite as the fix. It did not fix it. My Mac will not pair with hubby's JBL bluetooth speaker either. And the HK speaker works fine with all our other devices.
