Connecting new USB3.0 ext. h.d. to an older iMac

My iMac is 3 years old.  It has 4 USB 2.0 ports and a Firewire800 port.
I want to buy a new external h.d. to store some old files on, but all of the ext.h.d. that I have found seem to be USB 3.0.
Is there a connector that I can use to connect a new USB 3.0 drive to my iMac, with its 2.0 ports?

I have older connectors so I wanted a single new adapter to connect my older adapters rather than buying several new ones.  But this one doesn't seem to work on iPhone 5. But does work on mini to upload photos from sd card.  Bummer.  Any solution tips.  Mike

My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • Connecting a new Macbook Pro to an older iMac

    Hi,
I've got a Macbook Pro 15" (early 2011) and I want to connect it to an older iMac at school so I've got a bigger screen for photoshop.
But the problem is that my MBP has a Thunderbolt port, but the iMac doesn't.
The iMac does have a Mini Displayport
At my local apple store they sold me an Mini Display -> Minidisplay cable and said it should work from the moment I connect it.
    I've tried it, doesn't work.
Trough google I've found that you've got to press CMD + F2, But that doesn't work either.
Is there a way to do this? Or did the store just ripped me of?

The news is not good based on what I have been able to find:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/2914651#2914651
This may not be definitive.  This may be a fools errand, but connect them and see if on SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS the iMac is recognized as a monitor.
Perhaps a post in the iMac forum might prove useful.
    Ciao.

  • Any sucessful connection  - new mbp 15" to samsung LCD HD-ready(series) TV?

Been reading a lot on this forum but got confused so appreciate if anyone who has sucessfully made this connection to share with us here!
    Thanks!

    tbrodi,
I do have the same stuff. only a newer version of the Samsung and an older mini.
I use a DVIHDMI cable, connect the cable into port 2 on the tv and the audio jack from the mini straight to the input on the tv, the audio out from the tv is going to the recever/amplifier.
At least, that works for me all in full HD

  • Connecting new devices to wifi

    Hi…
I have a time capsule which is used as my wifi hotspot. I have multiple devices connected. I am 100% sure that I have, and remember, the wifi password (verified though keychain access, yet connecting new devices is impossible. This phenomena is just recent. The devices already connected are unaffected. I have gone through some of the obvious steps such as reeseting the Time Capsule. The discussion post "How to reset Wi Fi password when old one forgotten?" at https://discussions.apple.com/message/23252830#23252830 is problematic in that step 5 requires "continue" to be pressed; I see no "Continue" select button. Any ideas?

The instructions that you have assume that you are using a Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, so if you have Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks, those instructions would not coincide.
It would probably be simpler if you reset the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds, then releasing and waiting a minute for the Time Capsule to restart.
Then, set up the Time Capsule again like you did originally. You can use the same device name that you used before if you wish, but change the name of the wireless network and the password. Might be a good idea to write down the password(s).

    Hi Sprucie and welcome
Firstly, can you remove the image you've posted as it gives the hub's SSID and your wireless password for connecting to it. Although the odds must be huge, if anyone near you read this and realised it was your hub, they would be able to connect to it.
Secondly, from that screen, click advanced settings, continue to advanced settings and click on wireless. From there select another wireless channel, either channel 1, 6 or 11. Click apply when you've done this. Also the distance from the hub will affect the connection speed - how far away is it? - do other devices in the same room also operate slowly?
Installing inSSIDer on a wireless enabled laptop would also be beneficial as you would be able to see what channels are used in your area - you're best to avoid heavily used channels.
Also, ideally connecting via an ethernet cable would solve all this - but this isn't always practical. You could use powerline adapters

  • Should I remove duplicate songs from itunes before connecting new ipad2

Bought new iPad2.  New to Apple.  Have to connect to iTunes.  Should I remove all duplicate songs from iTunes first, before connecting new iPad 2?

Download the zip, and run the program you find: http://ottodestruct.com/blog/2006/01/31/easier-to-use-itunes-scripts/
If you're leery and want more references, do a search for "Quickscripts" and you'll see what people have to say about it!
    Good luck!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Unable to connect new devices to network

I have a WRT610N which does not allow me to connect any new devices to the wireless network. This is a recent problem as I have been able to connect new devices before. Devices on the wireless network, those that have been on the network, are able to disconnect and reconnect. Just new devices are excluded. Have gone through the admin screens to see if something is amiss but can not find anything. Any suggestions?

Hello again Before doing the procedure you outlined in your response, I opened the utility for the router and manually entered the Mac address for the iPhone. I then entered the passcode for the network on the iPhone and it worked. Should it fail, I will follow the re-flash and reconfig procedures who suggested. I do appreciate your assistance in this matter. If nothing else, it made me think! ;-) Thanks Pete
