Connecting old 20'' Apple Cinema Display??

Will I be able to connect my existing 20'' Apple Cinema Display (model A1081) to a new 2.5GHz Mac mini using the enclosed HDMI to DVI Adapter? Or will I have to purchase a separate adaptor?
If it helps, the specs of my display are as follows:
20-inch Apple Cinema Display
model A1081
Viewable: 20.1 inches
1680 x 1050 optimal resolution
16.7 million colours
DVI Display Connector
Purchased: October 2005.
Manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA467/en_US/CinemaDisplays_20_23_30inchU serGuide.pdf
I currently use the above display with a PPC G5; will I notice an increase in viewing quality if I use it with a new Mac mini?
Many thanks.

Yes, it will work fine with the included HDMI to DVI adopter

  • I have an old 30" apple cinema display (2005) I want to use as a 2nd monitor to a new iMac (2012).  I don't just want mirror image of iMac; what's the best way to do this?

I have not bought the iMac yet but will do so very soon and just want to make sure I have what I need to get everything setup including adding the old faithful 2005 30" cinema display.  Currently I am driving the old 30" cinema display with a macbook pro also purchased 2005 and happy to say I got a lot of good miles out of this rig.  What's the best way to connect the old 30" monitor as a second display for the new generation iMacs?

I can find online new in unopened box a 2012 iMac 27" i7 with 1T Fusion Drive for $1899 no sales tax.  This seems like a pretty good deal since I notice the same is available from Apple refurbished for $100 more plus sales tax.  I know that they say the Fusion drive is a lot faster on 2013 models but some of the speed tests I reviewed online showed the 2012 i7 and 2013 i7 very close on speed for both storage and processing.  Any thoughts?
I don't like changing batteries so I would buy a separate Apple keyboard with numeric pad since it only comes with wireless keyboard.  I'm a trackpad enthusiast having been using my macbook pro trackpad with current set up; and I am prepared to buy the Apple trackpad and replace batteries every 2 months but I would greatly prefer USB connection and rechargeable trackpact.  I know Logitech makes one so if anyone is using and knows how it compares to Apple's I'm all ears.

You can use USB for the Apple trackpad.

  • How do I connect a new Thunderbolt MBP to and old 23" HD Cinema Display ADC port

A question Im sure many have asked but I cant find a straight forward answer.
I simply will be buying a new thunderbolt MBP 15 and NEED to connect it an old 23" Apple Cinema Display that uses the old ADC connector.
Can I do it and if so how? I realise theres a potential under powering issue?
    Thanks

    Hello Sigh
I am sure there is no way to get your ADC connector display to function with your new Mac Book Pro.
I tried everying I could and gave up and purchased a 24" Apple refurbbished Cinema Display for $599 + tax on 4/27/2011. The Apple part number is FBXXXXL/A, Model A1287.
Gave my  year 2002 ADC 22" display to a friend.

Got my new MBP 2011 today. Hooked it up to my 23" Apple Cinema Display fine, using the Apple DVI to ADC converter > Mini Display port adaptors. I could then mirror display, but only at 1440 x 900 resolution.
My dream is to have it like my old laptop--I mostly leave it shut, and main display is on the Cinema Display. So far, if I close the laptop lid on my new MBP, display shuts off. Also, can't get it to bump up the resolution to 1920.
    Sigh.

  • How to connect 22" Apple Cinema Display with ADC to Mini DisplayPort?

What are my chances to connect a 22" Apple Cinema Display with ADC connection to my new MacBook Pro with its Mini DisplayPort? Is there a combo possible of some adapter with some cable for instance?

You need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter

  • Using only an Apple Cinema Display connected to MBP (w/ the lid closed)

    Hi,
Could someone please help me on a small but rather annoying problem?
I have a Mac Book Pro 17" connected to an Apple Cinema Display 24". All I would like to do is to just use the Cinema Display, close the laptop lid, and for the MBP not to go into sleep mode (taking the Apple Display away with it).
I've looked in the Display and Energy Saver settings and have trawled through the online forums but as yet have not had any luck.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks, M>/.

Apple supports using an external keyboard/mouse to wake the MBP in clamshell mode.

The other option is 3rd party software to disable lid-closed sleep:

  • Can I use an Apple Cinema Display as a second monitor for my iMac?

I have a new 24" intel iMac and was wondering if I could use my old 20" Apple Cinema Display (aluminum) as a dual display. What cables do I need?

Just had a good look inside my box and nothing. Maybe it's a Apple UK thing
The back of my iMac does have a Mini DVI port so I'm gonna pop down the Apple store tomorrow morning to pick one up.
Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if I'm successful.

  • How to connect 3x mini-displayport cinema displays to Mac pro

I'm looking for recommendations on how to connect 3  27" Apple cinema displays to a new Mac Pro (single card).
2 connect direct to the mini-displayports; but which adapter converts DVI-D to mini-displayport (not mini-displayport to DVI-D)?
Any suggestions/recommendations with a link would be appreciated.

  • Apple Cinema Display 22" doesn't power on

All - I have an old 22" Apple Cinema Display, model# M8149 that won't power on at all - no picture, no blinky lights on the front, just totally dead. I've tried it with a known function ADC capable video card as well as a known working DVIator external power supply - notta.
Does anyone have any idea which part may be defective? I see lots of posts about replacing the inverter board, but in all cases, the posts indicate the monitor powers on, just no or blank picture. Mine doesn't show any signs of life whatsoever.
    any help is appreciated.
    thx,

Are you sure that the connector on your laptop is a "AVG" ? Never heard of that one before. Perhaps it is a VGA???? If it is a VGA and your laptop graphics card is 16 MB video or less, it probably will not support the resolution of the 23 inch. As I can recall, it needs minimum of 32MB video ram to run it. Most older laptops will max out at resolutions of 1200X800. Find out what specs are on the card.

  • Apple cinema display, IP address, Computer Name and Apache

I have been working on getting Apache, php, mySql setup to do a bit of web design and playing with wview (weather station), drupal, wordPress, etc.  Right off the bat, let me make clear that I am not attempting to host sites to the big bad WAN.  LAN only!
The changes to OS X over the last several versions were a definite speed bump but with the help of Neil Gee's youTube video and this forum pointing me to a permissions problem, Apache, mySql, and php are installed.  Browsing localhost, localhost/~myname and a couple of sites I set up using vhosts in ~myname/Sites from the laptop works.  Joy!    Browsing from other computers on the network nothing worked. Half a day googling the problem before I noticed something odd about the IPv4 Address for my Mac.... when I tried switching it to a static IP I got the message that the IP was already in use.
At this point I need to describe my setup... a MBP with Thunderbolt connection to an Apple Cinema display.  The ACD is connected via ethernet and the laptop was connected to the LAN via the Thunderbolt.  The network router is (unfortunately) an HGV-3800 whose radio is turned off.  Wireless in the household is accomplished by a Time Capsule in bridge mode.  Not my preferred setup but after killing off several good days, I capitulated to the recommended AT&T configuration.
A quick browse of devices on the router revealed that the IP being used by my MBP/ACD had an unknown device name while all the other devices in the house had their names... odd.  So I fired up the wireless on the MBP and took another look at the device list... the router listed this new connection with my correct device name.  Even better, when I browsed to http://myComputerName and http://myComputerName/~myname from another computer on the LAN the It Works! and My Site Works! came up perfectly.  However, the sites that i set up in vhosts stubbornly refuse to come up on the other devices.
My interpretation of what is happening with the ethernet connection to the ACD is that this connection is not identified as being to my laptop... it is to the ACD and somehow the laptop is borrowing it... surfing works and I can connect for file sharing to other computers on the LAN (though it is a bit clunky)... the borrowed connection is not up to the task of hosting on the LAN.  My question about this is whether there is a setting I can make which will correct this behaviour and allow the Thunderbolt connection to function as if the ethernet was directly connected to the laptop?
The other more important question is what is needed to make the sites I have in myComputer/~myName/Sites browseable from other devices on the LAN... these same sites that are coming up perfectly when I browse to mySite1.com from the laptop?
I am not really looking for advice to go get Mavericks Server... many different issues with that scenario.

Your router only has a limited about of features to make it "stealthy."
Here are a few things you can try...
    - Access the router's web-based administration @ http://192.168.0.1.

  • Max resolution of '30 inch Apple Cinema Display'...?

When I connected 30 inch Apple Cinema Display, model M9179ZM/A, to an ATI Radeon X850 XT graphic card, I have failed to get higher resolution than 2048 x 1538 althought this graphic card is listed in the Technical Specification at www.apple.com/displays/specs.html as an appropriate card for driving this monitor.
Plese could anybody tell me where a mistake is?
    Thanks.
    PC   Windows XP

Being compatible with the 24-inch Cinema Display and being able to use it at resolutions higher than 1280 by 800 doesn't necessarily mean that it can drive the 30-inch Cinema Display at its full resolution. You need to use a dual-link DVI connection as stated above.

  • MacBook Pro Apple Cinema Display issues

I’m using Photoshop CS6 through a MacBook Pro connected to an Apple Cinema Display. Files on display don’t always appear (work area is just blank, interface still there) and when I go to save, the save dialog box is off top of screen to where I can’t see but a small portion of the dialog box. Can’t pull it onto screen. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have a similar situation.  I have spring 2011 macbook pro 17" (MacBookPro8,3).  I was connecting to an older 30" Cinema Display HD, using the Apple dual-link cable with Mini DVI (Thunderbolt) and USB.  I am running 10.6.8.
I was running this configuration for a while (closed lid/"clamshell"), but it stopped working.
I'm pretty sure this is from the "Security Update" that I just installed.
No amount of reboots or cable jiggering helped.
Except this wierd thing:  if I connect the USB and display to the laptop, the display stays dark.  If i disconnect the USB cable connecting the DISPLAY to the CONVERTER, the screen comes up fine.
I just plug the keyboard into the laptop and it works.  Of course, unplugging the CONVERTER USB from the LAPTOP makes it go away (?!).  So I've lost a USB prot with this little hack.
Try messing the USB connections and see if you get any changes.
I have no idea what to make of this bizarre behaviour, but it is making me crazy not being able to reliably use my desk setup with this nice laptop.
I hope someone can offer more data or help.

  • Apple Cinema Display 24-inch sleep problems with MacBook 13-inch?

    Hey guys,
Occasionally, my MacBook (13-inch, 2009) when connected to my Apple Cinema Display 24-inch screen will not wake up from sleep mode - whether in clamshell mode, or not. Even if i unplug the Display from the Macbook, the MacBook will not wake up.
This can be very frustrating when it occurs because i have no choice but to give the MacBook a hard shut down.
Not sure whether I'm the only one with this problem, but if there is any solution to this issue it'll be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

You might try running the MacBook in Safe Mode for a while to see if the problem still occurs when running safe. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, that would point to a problem in the configuration of your main account.

  • Apple Cinema Display Shuts Down under MBP Battery Power

Just had the logic board replaced on my early-2008 MBP. Got home, connected to my Apple Cinema display, everything's fine. However, when I disconnect the laptop power source, the cinema display goes dark. I can click the mouse, my password prompt comes up, I enter the password and the display comes back for a few seconds, then goes dark again. If I wait more than a few seconds the laptop goes into sleep mode. Only when I reconnect the power does it come back to life. Not sure what the issue is, I checked all the battery and power settings, I don't have anything set to automatically go into sleep mode. Also went to the display panel, clicked "Detect". Still having the problem. Someone once before suggested checking the option to "Mirror" the displays, but I don't even see that option in the display panel any longer.
    Any suggestions?

FWIW this has never worked with an external display while on battery power alone either in Clamshell mode or Mirroring/Extended Desktop - I thought the MagSafe was a requirement did it works without it before the replacement ??

  • How to connect old Apple Cinema Display to new Mac Mini?

    Hello,
I'm considering replacing an old Mac Mini with the new model, but I intend to keep on using my old Apple Cinema Display 20" with it. But i'm having some trouble finding the right conversor (it seems there isn't any from Apple...)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

If by "old" apple cinema the OP is referring to the aluminum displays of the later mac models, then yes, that's a no-brainer, the problem is that if the OP is referring to the "real" old apple cinema displays, which have a DVI-type connection with power included on the same cable, like the displays the former Mac G4 or G5 had, then he needs a ADP to DVI port, which in most cases it cost more than the actual monitor itself.. I guess the OP needs to specify what does it mean by old apple displays or throw in a link to an image..

  • How to connect a apple cinema display to an imac

I have a brand new 27 inch iMac. I also own a 30 inch  Apple Cinema Display.  What peripheral adaptor do I need to connect the display to my new iMac?

    Hello,
Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort-> Dual Link DVi cable...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
A notable peculiarity of Thunderbolt is that it uses exactly the same connector as Mini Display Port, and that's not all. The Thunderbolt connector also carries Mini Display Port video signals. That means you can plug a Mini Display Port video cable/adapter in to a Thunderbolt connector and your monitor will work.
