What adaptors do I need to attach a 2002 23" Apple Cinema Display M8536 to an iMac11,1 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 and will the ATI Radeon HD 4850 support both 2560x1440 on the iMac and the lower resolution of the 23" Apple display simultaneously?

For the first screen is no brainer you use the Apple adapter to have video out to HDMI or DVI, but the second screen is where it gets tricky...
There are USB to DVI out external video cards that should work with the iMac and OS X 10.6 but I have changed. Honestly I have tested 6 so far and none of them works as advertised, you can not even set minimal resolution on there and some wont even work ( all of them come with OS X 10.6 drivers )
So I will recommend to stay away from the small $70 or $90 external USB to VGA/DVI cards...
(maybe someone has luck with them but i have tried like I said 6 so far different brand and no luck..)
Now recently online I tripped over a nice external video card that takes the MiniVideo Port out from the Mac and then takes it to another 2 monitors price was $249 i think, and you could hook up 2x30" monitors with hight res... I will try to find this link and post here later on.

Trouble Connecting 30" External Display to Retina iMac

I'm trying to connect a 30" display (Dell U3011) to a new retina iMac.
On my old Mac Pro (using the DVI connection), the display would connect at 2560x1600 as expected.
On the new iMac (using the MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter) the display will only connect at 1920x1080.
Am I doing something wrong? Is the lower resolution a limitation of the MiniDisplay Port? Yosemite?

Thanks. I figured out the problem, which amounts to RTFM: Mini DisplayPort to DVI doesn't support 2560x1600, but either a dual-link adapter (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IF252C), or a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, works just fine.

Display crashed - 2008 iMac running Windows 7

Hi there,
I have a later 2008 iMac running Windows 7 on an Nvidia 8800gt. I've been using the Windows side only for playing games, and have been doing so for about a year now. Everything has worked fine until today running Far Cry 2. The display started to stutter, then froze up. I rebooted, and it did this again, eventually crashing out of Windows.
Long story short, when I turn the iMac on now the grey screen is covered in green pixelated lines, and it won't show anything else. Did I finally kill the graphics card, or do I have bigger issues?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmm...looks like you've been bitten by the "weak NVIDIA chip die" issue that so far has not been confirmed in desktops.
During the NVIDIA chip scandal of 2006-2008, an investigation was launched (media source I can't recall) which found a fair number of GeForce 8/9 chips also fell to the same supplier's mistake that crippled countless notebooks.
The best you can do is to bring the unit over to your local Apple Authorized gurus (including Apple Stores) and have them check it out. You can tell them that you suspect a bad GPU. I'm not sure if you'll have to pay for it, though if you bought AppleCare, you'd still be covered today.

I Am building a pc and I would like to use my early 2008 imac as a display for a DVI and VGA output motherboard. I have read MILLIONS of questions on Target Mode and know as well as my name that iMacs older than 2011 cannot be used with Target display mode.I put target mode Earlier because of my iPad's incompetence with this website. In fact I can't edit anything I type in this question on my iPad. Annoying.
CAn I use FireWire to connect my iMac to my dvi or VGA pc output? My iMac also has a mini display port but I'm guessing that is an output only. Maybe there's a solution involving TINKERING or going inside the imac. You can guess my warranty is over since it's 2014.
SO any solutions to connect iMac to pc as a display Except using target display mode and thunderbolt which is IMPOSSIBLE with my prehistoric Mac.

Sorry but a 2008 iMac simply does not have that capability, the only solution available to you is using an outdated app called Screen Recycler. You will probably be disappointed in the performance though.

2008 iMac - Target Display Mode?

Hi! I am a little confused it looks like newer versions of the iMac 2009+ support target display mode but I can't find any info on older iMacs. I have a 2008 iMac that has a mini DVI on the back and a 2010 MacBook Pro with mini displayport. My question can I use the iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro? Can I take a mini displayport cable to DVI and a DVI to mini DVI to the back of the iMac? Or is the mini DVI on the back of the iMac an output only? If so does it allow you to use a second monitor?

I hear you - I'm trying to make it 4 (at a little over 3 right now) because I have some camera gear I want to buy first. My iMac has been crawling a bit lately especially when running Aperture. Just did a fresh Lion install this weekend and it seems to have improved. Was thinking about getting a super beefy Mac Mini and a 27" Cinema Display instead of an iMac next time - that way I can upgrade sooner and not feel so bad about it. Keep the Cinema Display and replace the Mac Mini every 3. Else bite the bullet and get a Mac Pro - but not sure I want a giant cheese grater

I want to connect my Cinema Display 27" to an iMac 24" Early 2008. I recently bought two adapters, one from Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort and another one from DisplayPort to Mini-DVI. I've seen offers on the web for services which will replace one graphics card for another in an iMac. You pay for the hardware and the service, and the service... ain't cheap... because it's not a trivial operation. I would never spend the money to have this done, because there will still be no certainty that things won't go kah-blooey later.
I sympathize. The iMac I'm currently using blew out its logic board two years into its three-year AppleCare warranty. It was replaced at no cost to me, of course, but as you pointed out in the case of your iMac, this was a well-known issue. And if it were to happen now, I'd be SOL because my iMac is now almost a full year out of its warranty.
On the other hand, I've held onto this iMac as my main desktop for a long time, much longer than I have for any computer in the past. 3-4 years is a good long time for a mostly-not-upgradeable all-in-one machine so I won't shed too many tears if that problem repeats (although of course I hope it doesn't). You've gotten three years plus out of your iMac, and while it might be tempting to pay for a repair, it might be better to just yank the resellable components (hard drive, RAM, etc.) and purchase a replacement Mac.
If you decide to go for the repair, you might find a sympathetic ear at your local Apple Store, if you come armed with some evidence that this component commonly fails and remain polite but firm. If you're lucky, they'll do the repair at no cost. Hope for the best, but expect nothing.
