Connecting Older Mac to USB printer

Is it possible to use a newer USB inkjet printer with older Macs with the Apple serial port?
I've seen USB-serial adapters but they seem to be directed at those who want to use older serial devices with newer Macs.
TIA for any help here.

Sorry, no PCI slots available but even if I had them are there drivers that will run under OS 9.x?

  • How to connect 10.9 Mac to USB printer via E2500 router?

So I've established that Linksys Connect software is incompatible with a Mac running OS 10.9 Mavericks.
Is Linksys Connect the only way to connect a Mac with a printer connected to the E2500 router? Or is there another way to make it work?

New operating systems and older software always have compatibly issues. Recently firmware updates have been pushed out. Maybe one will come for the E2500.
In a business environment you would normally share out the printer from a server or PC. Sharing from a router will be problematic.
How about the reverse; sharing the printer from the MAC to the PC? Do you have an old computer lying around you can turn into a Printer server? I just had a thought, there are actual printer server devices made for this as well.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB ?

Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB just like Firewire back in the day via Target mode or is there something similar? I am asking this because about 2-3 years ago I would normally image Macs via Target Mode. I used to have a regular Macbook running 10.6 along with a customized-ready-to-go .dmg image saved on the Desktop. Whenever I needed to put that image into any Mac I would simply connect the two Macs via Firewire, I would then press "T" at startup which will get me in Target Mode, I would then see the disk appear in the desktop of the Mac I had the image. I would then copy that image to the T mode macbook using super duper. Can this still be done through USB with new models and if so will I also need to press T at startup ?

No, USB connection does not qualify for this, only firewire and thunderbolt, as I read (but cannot test, for the time being I have only one such mac around).
This is why the short series of alu MBs (2008) are not qualified for target mode either.
p.s. What ‘new models’ do you refer to?

  • Connect 2 macs with USB?

I ordered 2 macbook pros and an imac for my family. i need to transfer their files from the windows pcs to the new macs. what kind of cord do i need and where can i buy one?

Depends a lot on how much stuff you have and whether you are planning on keeping the windows machines.
the Macs all come with wireless networking and gigbit ethernet, and it is reasonably easy to set up a network connection to handle the transfer and for subsequent ongoing communication with the windows computers. On the other hand, if the amount of material is not very great then a nice big memory stick or an external drive is a great way to go (If you get an external, get one with a combined FW and USB interface - FW is much faster on the Macs than USB and you can then use the drive for backups etc).

  • How can I connect older Mac Pro (2006) to my network wirelessly?

I just got a new (2012) MacPro that I can connect wirelessly to my network. I'm moving the old Mac Pro (2006) running OS 10.7.5 that had been connect via ethernet cable to the other end of the house. What do I need to get to connect it wirelessly?
    Thanks,
    Carmen

    Carmen,
Since the Wireless card was optional back then, you may not have gotten it in your original config?
You can verify if the hardware is installed several places, as Bob mentioned, do you have the option to enable wireless under your System Prefs \ Network (I would imagine not, since your asking). However, while very unlikely, it may be installed but your not able to see/select it for some reason?
So, just to make sure, you can also verify via looking under "System Information" (you'll want some info from there anyway).
"Apple Menu : About This Mac : More Info : System Report : Network : (look for Wi-Fi etc.)" if it exist you'll see the card and info about it.
If you don't have the option nor see a card was installed you can go about this a few ways.
    1. The absolute easiest route (to NOT have to deal with 3rd party drivers or possible 3rd party issues when you upgrade your OS etc) is check out places like Macsales and see if they have any of the original Air Port extreme cards available and install yourself. - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/BCM94322MC/
    2. You could talk with Macsales and ask which external USB wireless card works best with your rig (least fussy) and go that route. While several brands work just fine, you just never know when something changes in an update and then your faced with the old pointing fingers thing. Rare, but still....
Also, while your in the System Information area you'll want to note your model, if it's 2006, I think that's Mac Pro 1,1 ?
    Hope that helps.

  • IPad won't stay connected to Mac via USB

I was attempting to install the latest update to my iPad2 via the USB cable connected to my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with the latest Mavericks and iTunes update installed. I left the download and install to complete overnight as it was taking a long time. When I checked it in the morning, my iPad was in recovery mode. I was supposed to reset the iPad back to factory specs. It would not recognize my last backup at all although it was on my Mac. I was finally able to get the iPad back to its original factory software. I then tried to update to that backup. Somewhere along the line during that effort, the iPad went back into recovery mode again.
Since that time whenever I plug in the iPad using the usb connector to the Mac, the connection begins to fluctuate rapidly on and off. It does not maintain a connection for even a whole second! I then tried connected the iPad using a different USB cable and after that a different USB port. Finally I even tried it using a hub as a go-be-tween. None of these options worked. I then tried connecting the iPad to a power outlet to charge to see if there was a problem there. It connected to power just fine and charged the  iPad.
At this point I'm stymied and don't know what else I can or should try. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't imagine that this would help but have you tried resetting the iPad and then try recovery mode again? It may not help, but it can't hurt anything at this point. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appear on the screen. After it restarts, try to restore again.
If that fails, do you have another computer that you could use to try to restore on?

I called a vw dealership (in South Australia) today because I have an iphone5 and a Tiguan and experienced the same thing (after i had purchased the lightening/30pin adapter).
I was advised that the media interface software is not compatible with iphone5.  VW will eventually update the software according to ol'mate at the dealership, but it will be at an expense to the consumer allegedly.
I know that there is a iphone/vw media cable one can purchase from VW however, I believe this to only work with iphone4 or older?
Maybe try an older generation ipod to use for the car if all ur music is in itunes?
if anyone can correct me, I'd be more than happy to know... going to try my older generation ipad and see if there is any truth to the tale.... eventually.  Until then i'll stream via bluetooth :-)

  • Tranfer files from an older mac

Hello, everyone. I have been using macs for ages and through the years I have upgraded and bought newer macs numerous times. During a recent spring cleaning, I discovered a mac I had a very long time ago. I can't say for sure what the OS is, but it's pre-9, for sure. It's probably 7 or 8. I know it's more than ten years old, if that helps. Anyway, I was excited about what might be on there that I haven't seen in a while, but the monitor that's with it doesn't work. The computer itself starts up fine. I don't think any modern monitor will work with it, and it doesn't have a new enough firewire to put it in target mode and look at it with my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas about getting the files from this old mac onto a newer mac? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Many Macs included either an Ethernet port or a proto-Ethernet port called AAUI. They are both identified with the Icon
    <•••>
If you have AAUI, only a used US$5 RJ-45 transceiver cable is required to convert to what we have settled on today as a "standard" Ethernet port.
Even older Macs had serial "Printer" ports that could be set to talk AppleTalk/LocalTalk. They can be connected to more modern Macs by converting AppleTalk/LocalTalk to AppleTalk-over-Ethernet. Two easy connection or "bridging" methods are available.
    1) Buy a stunt-box that does it for you. Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT or Asante AsanteTalk are both available used, asanteTalk is still being manufactured.
    2) Download free Apple software and run it on an older Mac that has both Serial printer port set up as LocalTalk and an Ethernet port for AppleTalk-over-Ethernet. It is called LocalTalk Bridge and is available on the Older Software Downloads page.

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!
    thx,

    Hi Johnfromglenver,
There are no Mac drivers for the HP Officejet K60 printer. Therefore it is not compatible with the Mac operating systems. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. about 2 months ago i got a new imac and a new hp printer and when i hooked it up with my usb from my old hp printer it wouldn't connect (the mac wasn't reading that anything was connected) so i called hp and they tried to do what they could, but came to the conclusion that there was something wrong with that printer, so i brought it back and they gave me a new one. same problem. i connect it via usb and nothing all the while my old printer works perfectly. any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean: You didn't connect it directly to a USB port, you daisy chained it to the old printer? Or you mean you used the cable from the old printer?
I assume since you contacted HP, that you have the proper Driver/Software installed and they probably walked you through uninstalling/reinstalling. BTW, from my experience, HP printer tech support isn't all that wonderful and I wouldn't necessarily trust that they gave you the best advice.
What comes to mind is there was an HP printer update for Snow Leopard in Software Update, at least for my inkjet, which I'd been neglecting for ages. But when I finally installed it, it cleared up a number of issues. But, before updating, I was at least able to print and the printer was seen. Anyway, have a look in Software Update. I looked around the HP site for a standalone update and couldn't find anything.
If you give me the model I can probably find the most current software for it on the HP site.

  • How to connect a new 27" LED Cinema Display to an older Mac Mini?

I bought a 27" LED Cinema Display (no Thunderbolt) but don't know how to connect it to my wife's older Mac Mini. I presume the Atlona adaptor is the solution, but I haven't bougt one yet.

The cord attached to the display splits into a Mini DisplayPort, USB, and a MagSafe connector (for powering a laptop).
There is a separate connector on the back of the display for the AC power cord.
