Connecting os9 G3 to 10.3 G4

First I would like to thank everyone for the help on (help or I'm going pc) quick up date I had to erase HD and install osx 3 times before i got a clean install. Yea os9 was long gone. all i can say is +REPAIR PERMISSION+ and do it again. and wow that is how a mac is supposed to run! I also did a fresh install of os9 on my B/W g3 and it is running like a champ. So my question is can i connect my b/w G3 running os9 to my G4(apg) running 10.3 Do I need a crossover patch cable? how can I tell the difference I have 4 or more Ethernet cables lying around. Any tips on getting these two to talk?

Yes I would like to work on programs in os9 on the g3 then move file to G4 with osx. I connected the g3 & g4 with fire wire started the g4 and then the g3 holding down the T-key, nothing happened and I can't find target disk mode. should i be looking on the g3 or g4 any ideas.

  • Connect OS9 to OSX 10.6.2 File Server

I'm trying to connect my OS9 computer to my Xserve running OSX Server 10.6.2 to access files (via AFP).
I've taken a look around the discussion forums, and have found that 10.6 Snow Leopard no longer supports AFP connections from computers running Mac OS 10.2 or earlier. (verified: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3055)
I was wondering if there were any workarounds that any of you can/have come up with.

If you didn't understand the above posts, it means you can't connect your 9.2 OS to 10.6.2 Server OS. You have to get your client (9.2 OS) make it a Share Piont (Share it to others on the network) & get your server (10.6.2 Server OS) to connect to the the client. Thus you will have to store every thing on the 9.2 computer & copy it from the client to the server, from the servers GUI (you will have to be siting at the server to copy/access every thing). This makes no sense & solves very few problems!
Yeah I have the same problem. I have to administrate A hybrid network of Mac's & PC's. Lots of customised (In-house) software, some of witch will only run under OS 9.2 or earlier. Thus I have to be able to Share under AFP compatible with old versions. I had read some where that you could do it if you upgraded AppleShare to 3.8.8 But alas; that didn't work for me. I wanted to consolidate all of the share points into one/Two Array's. I guess anyone who also find them selves in this predicament could always find a old third-party piece of software like "Dave Classic" by "Thursby Software", that allows old Mac's to connect to Windows Networks. But I think I will just Use a third-party piece of hardware Like A "Thecus 5200" to Share afp to legacy computers, & in the end have a slightly more complex back-up strategy using Nsync, & use a little more power than necessary.
P.S. "Apple, I can understand why you have publicly stopped supporting such old systems, but why have you made it impossible for Mac supporters to do so with out using third-party products?"

  • Possible to connect MacPro to os9.2 on G3 (BW G3-400) ?

I just spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Apple support trying to network my old G3 with my new MacPro. Why was it so difficult? I don't know...but it may have something to do with the techs not being born when the G3 came out ;0) The final word from the second tech —who spent most of his time checking documents online vs. actual knowledge: "We consider os9 an obsolete os and no longer support it."
My aim is to have a mounted os9 HD/Desktop on my MacPro so that I can copy files. What I have now is the G3 booted up in OS 10.3.9—the latest system it can run—and I'm able to share ONLY the items in OSx, with the exception of the os9 Applications folder. I cannot access the G3's OS9 desktop from the MacPro. Of course the os9 classic desktop is easily available from the G3's os10 desktop.
What's frustrating is that from the MacPro, I can even SEE the os9 desktop alias, it just won't connect:
    Users
    System Folder
    System
    Library
    Image
    FONTS
    Documents
    Desktop (Mac OS 9)
    Applications (Mac OS 9)
    Applications
When I click the Desktop (Mac OS 9) icon, it just gives info. When I try to fix the alias, it can't find the os9 desktop, no matter where i look.
I CAN access the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder though and get get files out of it. (I made an alias of the os9 HD and put it in the Apps folder and have a temp. solution) Why can't I share the os9 desktop?
On my old computer: I still have programs I like to use in os9 and can't afford to update all of them. I like to keep my G3 booted in os9 because these apps work too slowly when using Classic out of osX. I know its possible to share the os9 desktop from a MacPro because at work, we have a scan station running os9 that we can share on our osX network, but know one can tell me how.

It's possible this document will help you: Mac OS- How to Connect to File Sharing or Apple File Services (AFP). With Panther running also see, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger- 'Connection failed' error when connecting to an AFP server.
In the long run, however, either update the OS on this G3 to Tiger if possible or replace it.

  • File count alternating in folder when OS9 connects to Mac OS X server

    Greeting All,
I have a few Macs running Mac Os 9.2.2 and they connect to a Mac Pro running OS X Server 10.4.7. The problem I am having is that if there are more that say 75 files in a folder that I open to view, the files in that folder keeps jumping and the file count keeps alternating. In other words, selecting a files from the folder is nearly impossible as the files keep moving in the folder. If I connect from a mac running OS X to the said Server running 10.4.7, I don't get this problem. Nor do i get the problem if I Connect the macs running OS 9 to a server running Appleshare Ip Server software I don't get the problem. Anyone knows how I can get around this problem?

Just out of interest, what happens if you view the folder by List View ?
I suspect with OS9 that you're trying to read the Desktop file to see how the folder icons are laid out, but there isn't one. So maybe you're trying to create one automatically. But OSX server on Intel goes "oh no you don't, create a resource fork ? what's that ?" or OSX server doesn't know how to create a desktop file for OS9 computers. Or you don't have file permissions to create a Desktop file on the OSX Server (then OS9 usually creates a temporary file on the OS9 System Folder Preferences folder).
Your OSX Server license will come with support to help you answer this. I suspect a quick delve into the manual will show that it may just not be possible. My company is still on OSX 10.3.9 Server, but I've spent between 2 and 3 years getting everything off OS9 so I can't help you by trying things myself (the only OS9 bootable computer we have left is the one Server runs on).

  • OS10.4 will no longer connect to internet via dial-up, but it will in OS9.2

Over the last week I noticed it was taking longer and longer to make a connection to the internet, then this evening it just would not connect at all in OS10.4. A message comes up and says there is a modem error to check all settings and try again. For a long time I ignored that message. I would just try again and it would connect. But today it refuses to connect.
I restarted in OS9.2.2 and it connected right away. Something must be screwed up in the modem or something in OS10.4.6 and I need some help. Right now I am using OS9.2.2 to post this question.
    Thanks, Clay

    Hi Clay,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

  • OS9 can connect....OSX cannot connect....

I recently purchased a used G3 iMac 400 with DVD-ROM. The machine came with fresh install of OS 9.22 and OS X Panther. I can connect to the internet in OS9, but not in OSX. Any idea why? Thanks.

    That did the trick....thanks.
Now I just have to figure out how to get the sound working. Maybe you can help me. Here is the problem......
I recently purchased a used iMac G3 400 with DVD-ROM. It has 256 meg of RAM and fresh installs of OS 9.22 and OS X Panther. There currently is no sound out of the computer speakers. • OS9 Clients on 10.5.4 Server. Connects but cant modify

I have a few 9.2.2 clients on the network that have to be 9 due to legacy hardware. Anyhow the server is now 10.5.4 due to upgrade last week from 10.3.9. The OS9 clients now only see the server volumes and will mount them on the desktop but the icon is white not colored and the contents are unmodifiable. I get a file does not exist error every time I try to edit any file. I have DHCP turned on in the server and im connecting to the server via IP address in the TCP/IP settings. What am I missing?

Connecting to the AFP Server from Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 Clients
Apple file service requires the following Mac OS 8 or 9 system software:
Mac OS 8 (version 8.6) or Mac OS 9 (version 9.2.2)
    TCP/IP
    AppleShare Client 3.7 or later
To find the latest version of AppleShare client software supported by Mac OS 8 and
Mac OS 9, go to the Apple support website at www.apple/support.
Note: Apple file service does not support AppleTalk connections, so clients must use
    TCP/IP to access file services.
To connect from Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9:
1 Open the Chooser and click AppleShare.
2 Select a file server and click OK.
3 Enter your user name and password, or select Guest and then click Connect.
4 Select the volume you want to use and click OK.

  • OS9 classic getting connection failed message but starts up ok

I'm working on OSX Tiger and when starting up OS9 Classic, I get this message,"The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." OS9 starts up eventually but I want to get rid of the annoying pop-up messages that pop up every two minutes. Thanks

    Hi, Web dude -
Stop (or quit) Classic. Then look in the Servers folder in OS 9's System Folder. Clear out any aliases you find in there.
Small possibility, but one of these may also be at play:
    - Look in the Apple Menu Items folder in OS 9's System Folder; locate and open the Recent Servers folder, if present. Clean that folder out.
    - Look in the Startup Items folder in OS 9's System Folder; remove the alias for anything not present on the hard drive.
    Then restart Classic to test.

  • Network issues connecting Tiger to os9

I am having an issue trying to connect a Tiger 10.4.3 computer to a OS 9.2.2, it is giving me an afp protocol error
    Connection Failed
This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it.
Can anyone assist me with this issue.
    Thank You,
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
Welcome to the Discussions. I was having the same problem myself. To compound my problem the OS 9 computer had no other means of getting the files off of it. No CD-R/RW drive and no FireWire. (If your OS 9 machine has FireWire I would highly suggest using FireWire Target Disk Mode as its a lot easier.)
What I eventually came to do, though was to boot my Tige machine from my OS 9 install CD. (Put CD in tray and hold down the C key on startup). This will boot your Tiger machine from OS 9. From there you can select Chooser from the Apple menu and as long as file sharing is enabled on your other machine, the two computers will talk to each other easily.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need a way to connect adb device to USB iMAC in OS9.

I have a software applicatoin that only runs on OS9. I have an iMAC333 running OSX 10.3 and OS9. The software requires a special tracball that is ADB. I need to be able to find an adapter that comes with OS9 drivers (extensions and/or sprockets). Any suggestions besides buying an ADB Mac?

    Hi, theracket -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Probably the most common adapter used for that is the Griffin iMate adapter -
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imate/
The only downside I'm aware of with the iMate is that it will sometimes cause the CD tray to open at startup (on those machines which have a tray). Using a self-powered USB hub between the iMate and the Mac will often prevent that.

  • Os9 connection scripts usable in os x?

    Hello,
I was having problems with my powerbook making connections over a phone line. I discovered that the modem setting went to v92 if I checked 'notify me if phone rings' or incoming call. My setting on my imac g3 (internal modem) only had options up to v90, and selecting v90 on my powerbook allows more internet connections. There is still a problem, however. When I try to make internet connections from my imac using various different modem script settings, the modem connects almost all the time very quickly. When I try to make connections using my powerbook fairly often it won't connect. Is this a connection script problem (same phone line) and can I use connection scripts used in mac os 9?
    thanks,
    charles

I finally solved the problem by going to the Apple Web site and downloading and reinstalling ARD client on the problem computers. By the way, both the admin and client computers are Intel iMacs running 10.5.3.

  • Cannot connect to iMac (OS9) via ethernet while connected to internet

I readily connect my eMac (OS X) to my iMac (OS 9) via ethernet using TCP/IP except when my internal modem is connected to the internet. In Network Port Configurations, I have ethernet at the top of the list, followed by fire wire and then the modem. It appears to search the internet.
    Any suggestions?

On the iMac, the AppleTalk Control Panel (CP) is set to connect via ethernet. The TCP/IP CP is set to connect via Ethernet, Configure manually with an IP and Router address of 192.168.168.1 and a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 The IP address shows up in the File Sharing CP which is set to use TCP/IP.
On the eMac, PPPoE is disabled and Appletalk is active. Connecting from eMac to iMac works fine when the eMac's internal modem is idle but not when it is connected to the internet.
When I try to connect from iMac to eMac while eMac is connected to internet, I see the eMac in the Chooser and can attempt to connect as either registered user or guest but then immediately get "The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken". If the eMac is not connected to the internet, I can connect as a guest and see items in my Public folder.
I tried creating a new Location and immediately lost my internet connection.
The IP address of the iMac never changes. I do enter the IP address of the eMac's ethernet into the chooser dialogue on the iMac when attempting to connect from iMac.

  • Can I use OS9 as the start up disk on my Intel Mac?

I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could simply install OS9 and reboot my computer. I don't need to move between the two, meaning I don't need to work in OS9 then instantly click and be in 10.4.7. I can deal with the inconvenience of rebooting.
    I'm having 3 problems
#1, I have an old version of Photoshop. I'll buy the newest Photoshop someday but the latest version wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive. $600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I should wait for the next version.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson has not updated the print drivers for this model and probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better photo printer $550.
#3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner $1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel iMac I downloaded the latest software update and the thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and I have to restart.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac? I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw things up and have to spend hours and days removing files and correcting problems?
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it I'll regret it.

    Hello,
I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard
drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I
can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could
simply install OS9 and reboot my computer.
The problem here, is that the OS 9 environment / Operating System will only run on a PowerPC processor.
The only reason that OS X will run on either processor, is that it was specifically designed to do so from the beginning.
But, OS 9 and older were specifically written for the PowerPC / Motorola processors.
So, you will need a machine with a PowerPC processor to run OS 9.
Currently, there is one program that will enable OS 9 to run on an Intel Mac. But, it requires making a copy of the Power Macintosh ROM. So, it's legal use is questionable at best.
    http://www.gibix.net/projects/sheepshaver/
This program works by emulating the PowerPC processor. And, it is reported to operate at roughly 1/8-th of native speeds. So, it could be pretty slow for productive photo work.
#1, I have an old version of Photoshop. I'll buy the
newest Photoshop someday but the latest version
wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive.
$600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I
should wait for the next version.
If it is a Mac OS X version, then it will run on the Intel systems. But, yes it will be slower. Usable, but slower.
I haven't tried this program, so I cannot personally comment on it. But, even Steve Jobs admitted it was slow on the Intel Macs.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson
has not updated the print drivers for this model and
probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better
    photo printer $550.
OS X comes with drivers for the Epson Stylus Photo 875. They are provided by the Gimp-Print layer. But, installed / select just like any other printer. So, as long as you can connect the printer using USB, then you can select the driver for the 875 and be fine (as long as this is the same printer).
Otherwise, some people have reportedly installed PowerPC print drivers without trouble. I haven't tried it myself.
    #3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner
$1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing
never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel
iMac I downloaded the latest software update and the
thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps
while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and
    I have to restart.
    Can't really help you there.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac?
I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down
and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac
understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the
startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw
things up and have to spend hours and days removing
    files and correcting problems?
As mentioned above, the only method currently available to use OS 9 on an Intel system is that SheepShaver program.
But, I would not expect good results with it for your uses. And, it's legal status would be questionable since you need to copy a ROM file from another Mac to use it (which goes against Apple's license agreement).
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby
and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it
    I'll regret it.
Just make sure you have a good backup of everything before you start experimenting.
    I hope this helps.
