Connecting peak meter to FCP and Decklink

Hi,
I need to buy an external peak meter because I'm doing more and more stuff for the telly. I was thinking of getting an RTW since they seem to be very reliable and easy to get hold of over here in Germany.
Now, I was wondering whether any of you can answer a few questions:
1) I have a BMD Decklink Extreme. Apparently, the sound conforms to SMPTE norm and not the EBU norm, meaning the sound coming from FCP via the Decklink would be to loud.
2) The company I work for have FC edit suites, and we mix to -9dBFS peak, which results in a 0dB showing on my external peak meter and on the Beta deck. I guess they adjusted both the deck and the peak meter, because otherwise I would have higher levels.
3) Does any of this make sense to you or am I unclear? Guess I am....
4) Any of you have a suggestion about good and not so veeeeerry expensive peak meters?

I have an RTW 1206D (link) - fed via the unbalanced phono/RCA inputs, so I can calibrate it. I do this by feeding a series of tones out from FCP (from -60dB up to 0dB) and adjusting the pots and moving the scale on the 1206.
(Actually I ended up making a new paper scale from -60dB to 0dB to work entirely in negative dB values for consistency.)

This error suddenly appeared when we upgraded from jboss3/tomcat5.0 to jboss4.2/tomcat5.5.
here's the usecase:
1) User clicks on report link
2) Crystal reports web componnent displays screen to fill in report parameters.
3) user enters parameters and clicks submit
4) System throws Exception
The same reports worked fine with jboss 3.2.6/tomcat 5.0. We haven't touched anything in this realm.

To try to narrow down the problem, I've updated the jdbc configuration to
 <track-statements>true</track-statements>

This Boolean element specifies whether to check for unclosed statements when a connection is returned to the pool. If it is true, a warning message is issued for each unclosed statement. If the log4j category org.jboss.resource.adapter.jdbc.WrappedConnection has trace level enabled, a stack trace of the connection close call is logged as well. This is a debug feature that can be turned off in production.

OK. I found the problem along with a workaround.


The problem:


a programming practice clashes with a new jboss 'safety check'.


Programming practice:


crystal reports gets a database connection in one jsp page, then tries to use it on another jsp/servlet


Jboss safety check:
Jboss/tomcat new comes configured out-of-the-box with a 'cached connection
manager', which


"Check[s] for unclosed connections and transaction terminated checks in servlets/jsps."


 Summary


In short, if a servlet/jsp ends and it leaves a database connection open, Jboss will automatically close it.




Workaround: 
Comment out two entries in these two files:


1) conf/jboss4/pe/deploy/jboss-web.deployer/server.xml


2) conf/jboss4/pe/deploy/jboss-web.deployer/META-INF/jboss-service.xml


The two entries:

Comments on the workaround


The 'cached connection manager' basically makes sure that the application cleans up after bad programmers. It seems most helpful in development, load testing, or trouble shooting.


In production, you can likely comment them out with minimal
impact on the application.

Work Flow with FCP and color correction

I am looking for a decent workflow between FCP and motion when I need to apply color correction to the clips.
I have a goup of clips in FCP that I would like to send to motion, animate them and send them back to FCP. Problem is I want to use FCP for the color correction- nicer than motion's. The, all bad options I have come up with are:
1. color correct in FCP and then send to Motion- will not work because filters are not applied in send.
2. Export the clips as one QT self containned movie- I lose the clip partitioning.
3. Exports individual clips to QT then into Motion- I lose the clip ordering
4. Color correct after I get back into FCP from Motion- clip boundaries are lost making applying color correction harder.

I've done this two ways - both variations on the methods you have outlined. First and simplest and one I used last week on a PSP project was to apply the color correction to the Motion clip (.motn file) after it came back from Motion. This is simple and easy, but if you've done titling, you may not want to color correct that.
The second is as you said to render and export a self contained movie, then import it and copy it onto the timeline above the original clip that produced it, thus (at least organizationally) maintaining a connection between them. I then send the quicktime to Motion.
Sorry I cannot think of another better way of doing it...

Cannot netflix to connect to wireless, cuts in and out

Have aplpe extreme as primary wireless and airport express as a booster. Trying to get Netflix at night is terrible, cuts in and out and is quite annoying. Is this the wireless problem as it is buffering on the TV. Or the TV or both or none?

Does your internet give you at least 4Mbit/s during peak internet usage.. if not then Netflix will not work well.
Test using a computer connected to the express wireless and see what you get in normal internet tests.
eg.. http://www.speedtest.net/
If you fail, plug the computer into the main router by ethernet and test the speed again. If you don't manage easily 4Mbit.. you cannot do Netflix.
If you get >4Mbit then your wireless setup is poor. You should run ethernet to the TV.
Remember everyone who is sharing the bandwidth in the house.. is cutting your chances of trouble free netflix.
Also apple routers have no Quality of Service so there is nothing you can do about it. If you have multiple people in the house work out an arrangement or use a proper router that has bandwidth settings for each user.

Audio Interface for monitoring, mixing 5.1 St Surround in FCP and Sd Tr Pro

I'm a fairly newbie with FCP and Sound Track Pro, and I am doing mostly long form, live event HDV recordings and editing. I'm about to start doing 5.1 Stereo Surround shooting and burning to Blu Ray. What do you recommend for an audio interface for my G4 PowerBook running Leopard w/2GB ram, to monitor/mix my 5.1 audio tracks in Sound Track Pro (since I can't monitor 5.1 in FCP?) I will likely be recording the tracks on the new Sound Devices 788T and inporting them into FCP and/or STP via firewire, but I need to monitor my mix before I burn to Blu Ray discs using Toast 10 and my LaCie BR burner.
Also has anyone found a way to use Bose 5.1 monitor speaker system? It would work fine for the BR player, but what about using with the Mac G4 PowerBook - do I need a digital audio - audio interface?

You'll need an audio-interface with at least 6 outputs. They should be connected to a surround processor or AV-Receiver with multichannel inputs. In line with your budget you could use M-Audio, Focusrite or Apogee products for that, they work with STP & Protools.
When monitoring, you cannot use the Bose system, because S/Pdif is for encoded audio only.

Yes.
This is a COLORISTS tool, pure and simple. If you aren't a professional colorist, I'd leave it alone. It is VERY in depth...it requires a lot more hardware than you might think. You CANNOT use this software without a coloring panel. Unlike Color where you see everything on screen, a lot of the controls and manipulateable behaviors can only be done with a panel. But it is a stand alone application...it can capture and output to tape, no editing software needed.
Additional hardware needed:
- Decklink Extreme 3D card - $995
- Tangent Wave Panel - $1500 (others cost more, this is the cheapest)
- NVidia Quadro 4000 Graphics card...TWO if you can help it - $2000 each. They also qualify it for the cheaper GTX 285, but that card has been discontinued. If you find it...$500.
So $5500 just for the software and hardware peripherals, not counting the computer, monitors, external broadcast monitor. Just FYI.
is there any function similar to Reconform between FCP and Color?
YOu don't SEND TO Resolve. You export a self contained QT file, and an EDL...and it chops it up. And then you output from Resolve. Not sure about reconform...I didn't get that far. I got as far as "crap, I don't have a coloring panel..." and put on the brakes.

FCP and ProTools

Dear All,
I have just done a project by using FCP and STP. To be honest, the roundtripping of FCP and STP is just too good to be true. When you work on the same computer, it works ok, except sometimes messing up the wave graphic. However, when we move to project to another computer, which is very common for any kind of collaboration, the files just have difficult time to reconnect and/or reconform. That's the first point.
The other point is that: In most of the sound mix stuido, they use ProTools. For our low budget films, we likely do the pre-mix and effects by ourselves and take all the tracks to well-facilitated stuido for final mixing or just a listening session. In this case, isn't it easier and nicer if we are also using ProTools for our pre-mix?
Then the questions are:
1./ I wonder if FCP and ProTools have something similar to roundtripping function between FCP and STP. I know FCP and ProTools are actually from two rivial companies, and I just wonder if there is some not-too-difficult workarounds to reconform the files, or any third parties software for reconforming. For our productions, changing things during pre-mix is quite often, so reconforming is actually important to us.
2./ As we mainly just use ProTools for simple editing, effects and mostly mixing, what kind of ProTools package will be suitable to us? Actually, what we need the ProTools to hook up is just a pair of Adam AX monitors, so we don't need too much I/O. Also, we already have an AJA KONA to connect the monitors. I wonder if we can just buy the software itself.

When you say ProTools outputting individual aiff, is it a mix down file?
Yes. I have certain audio configurations that we need to output for the networks. Ch1 & 2 are a stereo mix, then CH3&4 might be Mix minus Music, then Ch5 Mono Dialog, Ch6 Mono Prod Audio. Ch7&8 SFX....9 and 10 Stereo music.
So the mixer mixes down what we need for the various tracks.
Also, as I change my film, is there any way to update the found files in ProTools?
Don't change your cut. You should not be sending the audio to the mix if you aren't done cutting. You wait until you have picture lock, then send the audio. If there is a change, then you re-export the OMF, they reconform, and send new tracks. HOW does the audio guy conform? Got me...I just know that they can.

Connecting Panasonic HVX200 to FCP to view the color chart realtime

Dear All,
I want to use the waveform and vectorscope monitors from FCP to test my HVX200 while aiming at a DSC Labs color chart.
Of course, one of the ways is film the chart first, and then Log and Capture the shot to FCP and check the waveform and vectorscope.
But I am thinking if I can use my Mac Book to connect to my HVX200 to view the waveform realtime. Possible? Any suggestion? Any tool needed to connect them?

FCP and Grass Valley K2

Hi All
The educational institution I am working at is considering upgrading from Grass Valley Turbo, to the K2. has anybody out there had any experience with the K2 and FCP interface?
the website says the workflow is flawless, but I want to know from someone who's actually used it. The main points is how easy it is to move media back and forth between the systems, and what kind of codecs that can be used.
We shoot lots of stuff on P2, edit in FCP, and want to move the exported projects into the K2 for use in a TV news/current affairs studio production. We also want to record programs in the studio onto the K2, and move these recordings on to FCP for further editing. In the past we have used the Turbo for this, but the process has been very clunky, unstable and complex (for our students).

Not really David, the K2 is essentially their video server storage system and in the context of the question it seems pretty clear our poster is talking about hanging his FCP off that storage for transfer of media to/from his FCP system(s) and/or using it as a SAN for edit in place via iSCSI connection.
Jokke, I work in a K2 SAN environment, and I work with FCP and EDIUS but our K2 system would need an upgrade for us to take full advantage of the latest capabilities, including the GV FCP Connect Plug-in so I'm afraid I can't give you first hand knowledge of the system of the current functionality ... I have researched it somewhat tho, and could probably fill in some blanks for you ...
For example, support formats for edit in place w/ FCP are currently DV (25/50/100), IMX-D10 (30/40/50), XDCAM HD/EX/HD422 (25/35/50) and read only for AVC-I (50/100)
... but I can't tell you as much as the man with the plan regarding FCP/Edius K2 integration. My iphone is connected to wireless but itunes and appstore doesnt work. Safari doesnt open websites?

My WiFi is connected to my iphone 5s but if I will open the appstore,itunes etc they say 'cannot connect to app store'. And if I open Safari, there is no 'server'. I restart my iphone but nothing changes. Please help me. Thank You. (Excuse me for my bad English)

You may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPhone a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the "i" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Do not reset your router. Next, reset network settings on your iPhone (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

Problems with FCP and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card

Not sure if this should be in the MacBook Pro forum or this one...
I am having trouble with the GeForce 8600M GT video card while editing in final cut pro (and after effects). I have talked with numerous people at applecare, but they say that they are unaware of issues regarding the video card.
The problem: It's almost like the card is unable to keep up with professional video applications. Whenever there is movement in the video I'm editing, I get lines across the screen. Not sure to how better to explain it than to say it looks like the video card is having a tough time refreshing. (I can take the same video to a much older power book, and it plays perfectly, so its not the source file.)
At first I thought it was an FCP issue, but I just started using after effects, and I'm having the same problem in there. If I edit in after effects, when I play it back (in after effects), I get the lines. I can then export the project to a quicktime file. The quicktime file plays perfectly (no lines) when not involved with a professional application. Then if I import the same quicktime file into FCP and play it back in FCP, the lines happen again.

I had searched the macbook pro forum, but not this one. It seems that the "screen tearing" issue has been talked about a lot, so I apologize for the repetitive nature of the post. I will say that I am fairly shocked that given how many people have clearly called applecare, no one there seems to have a clue that there is a problem with this video card. I have talked with at least 4 different people in the FCP specialty group, and not one had any clue what I was talking about... 3 of the 4 were fairly insistent that it was a video source issue on my side.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express. I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.

Connection between CRM back end and ASP front end website for Ecommerce

Hi All,
I want to establish the connection between a ASP website and CRM back end server(we are replacing th existing ERP back end system with SAP CRM ).
I want to know whether I have to go with XI or any other connectors provided by SAP to establsih the communication between the existing ASP website and CRM back end server..
Can anyone please help me out.

Okay here is the general concept for your scenario:
-You will call standard/custom RFC's(could be BAPI's) in the CRM system from the existing application.
-You will need to write a new model layer in your ASP application that calls the RFC layer in CRM
-You decide what data you want to use from CRM in your application
Let's assume at minimum you will want to use the product master, business partner master, and business transactions. You will need RFC's/BAPI's for every interaction point where you will consume/publish data to CRM.
So when an user creates an order from your e-commerce site, you will need to support saving an order in CRM. This is example of how you need to map out each function in your existing site to a part of the CRM system. Since we don't know what your site currently does, this is something you would have to do.
Once you have mapped out the business level data to the CRM system, then you can evaluate where you will need a BAPI and/or RFC call. Once that is done, then you can look at the CRM system and see what standard pieces can be called. Then everything else is custom development. Your ASP application will call CRM via RFC.
It is possible to do what you want to do, but it is going to require a lot mapping work and a fair amount of development effort to integrate the two pieces. I don't know if you might be better off looking at the SAP Internet Sales Solution instead so you could focus only customizing that application, instead of worrying about an integration problem. It just depends on how much special functionality your existing e-commerce site has today.
My general recommendation would be for you to hire a consultant that has done an SAP e-commerce project using SAP CRM in the past and let them guide you on the implementation issues. An on-site resource could better answer your "high-level" questions.
However if you have more questions please ask and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

Read up about multi-tier applications.
You need servlet and JSPs for the server-side presentation layer, some classes for the business logic, and some mor for the persistence layer either using JDBC or some framework like Hibernate.
