Connecting powerbook to HD TV

My powerbook has a broken screen, but is otherwise fine. I want to sell it, as it has been replaced by insurance. I have deleted the hard drive, via firewire, but am unable to reinstall the software through firewire, as the old powerbook has the old processor, and the new one is a pentium. The 2 software versions aren't compatible. I would like to install the software again before I advertize it. However, as I can't see the screen, I can't do that.
I have seen that it is possible to connect to a HD television, using an HDMI cable. Which do port do I connect the cable to on the powerbook, and are there different HDMI cables? (male/female etc.)
If anyone knows or can help, I'd be extremely grateful.

To connect your PowerBook to an HDTV, you will need a DVI-HDMI converter cable. Connect the DVI end to your PowerBook, and the HDMI end into your TV's port.
On the software issue, I am puzzled at your comment. Mac OS X is Universal now, so if you have it for your Intel-based Mac, it will install on your PowerPC-based one. And the Mac OS X version that shipped when the Intel-based Macs did come out, were already Universal. Plus, you couldn't install an older version on your Intel-based Mac anyway, so a PowerPC version of OS X wouldn't work. But vice versa it will.
The other thing to note though, is that if you sell your old PowerBook, you can't sell it with say, Leopard installed or Tiger, if that was not the original software that came with the machine. (You might even have Panther or Jaguar depending on how old the machine is). Unless you include the physical disc with the OS on it, with the sale, then you can't do that per Apple's End-User License Agreement (EULA).
What I believe you can do though, (don't quote me on it, I'm not a lawyer) is as long as the software you install onto the PowerBook when you restore it, is the original system that it shipped with, then you don't have to include the discs.
Then it goes back to your comment about the software being incompatible. Even if you succeeded in seeing the desktop on your HDTV screen, you wouldn't be able to install the software still. However, not to worry, because you can.
(You just can't because of EULA).

Can't connect PowerBook G4 to wireless network

My wife has brought home a PowerBook G4 from work. It cannot connect to my wireless network. I use a D-Link router. Airport shows full bars, but it does not connect. I was able to connect by plugging it in to ethernet cord. Is there something with this model that has to be changed to have it recognize a wireless connection?

I am having a somewhat similar problem with my PB. I am trying to connect to a brand new (2 weeks old) Netgear wireless router. When the security password protection is turned off I am able to connect without issue. Sadly, it is a shared connection, and security needs to be on. When the password function is on, I am unable to connect. I repeatedly get a message saying "there was an error joining the airport network __."
The password is correct. The signal from the router has been switched to "mixed", per "gobnay's" previous suggestion. And I am getting enough signal strength from the router. It is set to WPA Personal, and other Mac's (a newer MacBook Air, and MacBook) have had no problems connecting. Mine is an older model, PB G4 running 10.4.11 (hardware circa 2003). It seems to be a security problem, but I am otherwise stumped...

Connecting Powerbook G4, 15inch 1.5hz to Samsung LCD TV

I use my laptop to watch movies both through .avi files stored on my laptop and through iTunes downloads. I currently use an S-video cable but, I can not get good resolution on the TV.
What is the best, cost effective method of connecting my Powerbook G4 to my Samsung 32" TV? The TV has the following connections:
1. S-Video
2. HDMI
3. Scart
4. another one that looks like a monitor socket

If you look in your Samsung user guide, I think you'll find that S-video doesn't support as high a resolution as HDMI.

Connecting powerbook g4 to samsung lcd le32 r7

does anyone know how to connect a powerbook g4 to a samsung lcd le32 r7. At the moment im using a dvi to vga adapter. The mac can see the tv but the tv cannot see the mac. i have tried different modes on the tv and different screen resolutions but none seem to work. The adapter works fine with a normal crt monitor is it worth buying a dvi to vga cable or does anyone know how to get it to work via dvi hdmi?

Connecting Powerbook to TV

Hi there,
I have a 17 inch Mac Powerbook G4, and want to connect it up to my TV to watch movies/DVD's.
The Mac has the S out - TV has the S in, so I assume all i need is a 7 pin (Mac) out to 4 pin (Tv) in. I've also been told that 4 pins work in 7 pin - so a 4pin to 4pin would do the job too...
Does anyone have any advice on which cable I should go for?

Funny, I never realized that different cabling for S-video existed.
The S-video cable I often use to connect to a TV set has 4 pins. It fits in the seven pin Powerbook connector. So a simple cable will do.
TV standard in here The Netherlands is PAL - I don't have a clue whether other standards might have other requirements.

Connecting Powerbook to Netgear Router using WEP

I am trying to set up a wireless network in my house using WEP Password protection. I have Netgear wireless router (WGR614 v5) that supports both WEP and WPA protection, but I am trying to add my dad's laptop to the network with a Netgear WG511 v1 network card, which only supports WEP protection. My PB connected fine when I had it set up with WPA, but since I switched to WEP, the Powerbook says "There was an error joining the AirPort network...". I also have one windows desktop wired to the router, as well as my PB, right now. Any suggestions

Here are a few more methods of solving this problem:
- try entering the same 13-character alphanumeric passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
- try entering the same 26-digit hexadecimal passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
Make sure the Netgear router is running the latest available firmware version available from Netgear's web site.

Connect PowerBook to eMac?

I have an eMac that won't boot up. Is there a way for me to connect my 17" PowerBook G4 to the eMac and work on the eMac from my PowerBook, run Disk First Aid, etc.? The eMac will turn and get to the point in the boot-up process where the Apple logo appears and the spinning gear, and then it stays there. I've tried restoring the eMac System from System Disks that came with the eMac but I get an error message, and this is why I'm wondering if I can do it by connecting to the PowerBook.

hold down the T key as you boot the emac, this will put it in target disk mode
then connect it to the powerbook with a firewire cable
the emac's disk will mount on the powerbook like an external disk
(i'm not familar with the emac, so i'm assuming it has firewire and supports this mode)

Connecting Powerbook "Pismo" To a TV?

Hi,
I just wondered if it's possible to connect my G3 Powerbook "Pismo" to a tv?
I have done this in the past with a "Clamshell" iBook and a "Dual USB" iBook using a Apple AV cable (three pin red, blue and white) but can't seem to get it to work on my pismo. Am i mising something or is it just not supported on this model?

Connecting powerbook to a macbook to display on both screens

I would like to display an iphoto slideshow on two screens. My slideshow is on a G4 15" powerbook and I would like to be able to display it on that screen and a macbook at the same time. How do I connect the two together and output to both screens from the powerbook?

Hi, Michael. It would be simplest just to install and run the slide show on both machines, independently and simultaneously. Neither a Powerbook nor a MacBook is designed to be used as a second display for another computer. That said, it is possible, using a VNC client, to set one machine up so it displays what is running on another Mac. But I'll be darned if I can find instructions for doing so using any search terms I've thought of so far.

Connecting powerbook & samsung LCD

I recently bought a Samsung 40" LCD TV with 1360x768 pc resolution. I was assured I could connect my powerbook to it with a HDMI-DVI cable.
I went to the Apple store in SF to buy the Belkin cable but they didn't have it in stock. They sold me an XtremeHD HDMI-DVI cable (which incidentally is $100 cheaper than the Belkin and no one in the store could explain why the radical difference in price).
But when I connect the powerbook to the TV, the only thing that displays is my screensaver image. No toolbar, nothing. Advice anyone? thanks!

You don't have to mirror displays, but doing so shows the same thing on both displays, sometimes with some funny business on the size on one of the displays. Note that you can "span" displays, by not mirroring, and using the "arrangement" tab to move the virtual arrangement of the displays in relation to each other, as well as dragging the menu bar to the display you wish to have as the "primary" screen.

Connecting PowerBook to PowerMac

I've heard there is a procedure for connecting a PowerBook to a PowerMac so that basically the PowerBook is an external hard drive for the PowerMac. What all is involved besides just hooking the firewire cable to each computer? TIA for your help.

Depends what you're trying to do. if you want to transfer your settings etc from the powermac to the pb, then do what i said the other way round and run the migration assistant from the apps utilities menu.
If from the Powerbook to the Powermac, then the way I said, but run the assistant on the Powermac.
If the PB is new, it will give you the option as part of the original set up procedure.

Problems connecting powerbook to ipod touch through wifi

I searched for previous posts but couldn't find a solutuion. I have been using the high speed internet from my powerbook to connect to my iPod Touch through wifi to be able to use the internet on my ipod close to my computer.

I have been using these instructions successfully to connect my ipod to my powerbook for several months but now it has stopped working. When I get to System preferences>sharing>interenet and I select "Share yur connection from: Built-in ethernet", the only opions I have for "To computers using:_______" are "Built-in Ethernet" and "buildt-in Firewire" nothing about airport. Also at the bottom of the sharing window the "Airport Options" is greyed out and I can't select it. So I went to system preferences>network and my airport is listed but "Airport is currently off" So I click "Connect..." and the "Internet connect" window opens to the "airport" tab. "Airport Power: Off" and everything is greyed out so I can't select anything. And at the bottom of the window. "Status: No Airport Hardware found". So I went to the system profiler clicked on "network" on the left hand side, then clicked on "Airport" at the top right under "active services" and then looked a the information on the lower right side of the window:

Connecting PowerBook (Panther) to PowerMac (OS 9)

I have two computers which are networked via a netgear router on a high-speed DSL connection: a PowerBook G4, aluminum (OS X 10.3.9, airport extreme) and a PowerMac G4 (OS 9/OS 10.2.8) there is also a printer connected to the router. The router connects to the PowerMac directly, the PowerBook accesses the network wirelessly and both computers share the printer (PowerBook, wirelessly).
The PowerMac (in both Jaguar and OS 9) can connect to the PowerBook. The PowerBook can only connect to the PowerMac when it is booted into OS X; it is unable to connect to the PowerMac when it is running OS 9. Both computers, in all systems, can locate and access the printer.
It must be the settings, but I do not understand them well enough to know how to change them. The PowerBook (running Panther), is always a pain getting the network set up. It NEVER finds the settings automatically, while the older PowerMac running Jaguar finds them instantly, and with little trouble when booted into OS 9. Generally, I allow the automatic DHCP settings to configure the network.
In order to connect to the PowerBook from the PowerMac in OS 9, it was necessary to activate AppleTalk, which DID connect to the laptop. I tried making appleTalk active on the laptop, but it had no impact. Why do I need AppleTalk when there is ethernet?
Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Figured it out.
In the file-sharing control panel; in addition to checking file-sharing, one must select the little checkbox that says "enable file sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP".
Checked the box, and I'm in.

Cannot connect PowerBook G4 to DIAL-UP internet connection

I have a G4 PowerBook (the very last of the series made) but I cannot get a dial-up internet or e-mail connection. It is so long ago that I used dial-up that I have forgotten the intricacies. Also how do I know WHICH of the several Apple Internal Modems listed, is the one I have in my G4. The names on ABOUT THIS MAC do not correspond with the list I am presented with when I am trying to put in the correct information.
I have never used this G4 for dial-up and am starting to think that perhaps the internal modem is faulty. How can I check if the modem is still functioning properly, please?

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I, too, many years ago used to have Fax STF, though on a separate disc. Even if I had not mislaid the disc (which probably would not now work with OS 10.4.11) surely it would need my internet provider's settings? When I phoned Calcutta on Friday, the lady I spoke to changed some of these, and I am now at sea without them and cannot even get as far as hearing the usual screeching noises.
I did note this recently from an internet site:
With a suitable terminal emulator (something like ZTerm), you should be able to send AT commands directly to the modem. If you type AT followed by Return, the modem should return an OK. Then try ATI (or ATI1, ATI2, ATI3 et cetera) followed by Return; the modem should respond with technical information. If one writes ATDTxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxx is a telephone number) followed by Return, the modem should dial the number (if you have two phone lines, you could check whether the other phone rings).
I now have the promise of another Calcutta helper that she will phone me this evening. The whole object of the exercise is that I will be able to take my second Mac to my husband's house and get a dial-up only connection there which will be better than nothing. He has vascular dementia and it would be good to have an internet connection. I already have Virgin broadband in MY house and do not want to take out two subscriptions if I can avoid it. I have had a longstanding BT dial-up address (all e-mails to which get re-routed automatically to Virgin) but BT require you to make one or two uses of the address every year to keep it alive.
I have grown so accustomed to the glories of Wi-fi broadband, I had forgotten how fiddly old dial-up systems were. I tried mobile dial-up at my husband's with "3", but his house fell into an area of no reception. I even went out into the open air in his square with the PowerBook and dongle to no avail.

Connecting Powerbook to External drive on another computer

Hello.
Something odd has happened since installing the latest 10.4.6 update.
I have an iMac G5, to which is connected an external LaCie Hard drive (via USB)
Before the update, I was able to connect to the hard drive via the wireless network from my Powerbook.
I woudl click on Finder > Network and see my iMac listed.
then I would click connect and it would give me an option to select the volume I wish to mount.
Now it does not do that. It seems to be connecting via FTP..with no mounting options, which is odd because in 18 months it has never done that.
Can anyone help and repair back to how it used to be please?

Hello - I understand and respect your opinion, however, if something worked fine before (the 10.4.6 update) without extra software, then it should be able to do it again.
I don't really want to add more software if I don't need to.
