Connecting Printer via HP JetDirect 300x

I've been using an HP JetDirect 300x to connect my HP Laserjet 6MP to the network. We had a 4 day power outage and now I need to reconnect it. I reset the print server to its defaults and the IP address now reads 10.0.1.12. I want to change that to a 192.xxx IP address. But I've forgotten how. Could someone remind me? I'm using OS 10.6.6

I figured it out. Had to go into Airport Util and put it in Bridge Mode. That changed the IP numbers to 198.xxx. It also made sure that my Extreme was not acting as a router, when I already have my cable router.

  • Connecting to USB connected printer via LPD

    Hi there,
Does anyone know if you can access a USB attached printer using the LPD protocol? I cannot find this in the Time Capsule documentation.
I'm helping a Yosemite user where Bonjour is not working and thus the USB connected printer is not being advertised in order to add it.
How to get Yosemite to see new printer driver for Canon via Bonjour
For other brands, the USB port has a name like Port1 or PR1. So I would like to know if the Time Capsule supports such a connection.
    Thanks
    PaHu

Hello PAHU. I'm thrilled to have run across you on the Apple site. Your post (below) is exactly what I need help with:
"Rather than use Bonjour, which seems to have a problem for some users who have updated to Yosemite, you can use one of the IP protocols included with OS X. To do so you will need to find the IP address the printer is using. If you need help with that, reply with the model of Canon you have.
With the IP address noted, open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add. Select the IP icon and enter the Canon IP address in the Address field. Change the Protocol to LPD and leave the Queue blank. Change the Name to the model of Canon and then in the Use menu, select the appropriate Canon driver for your model. Click the Add button to complete the printer creation and then see if you can print."
Kindly please tell me how to find my printer's IP address. I am desperately trying to reconnect to my Canon PIXMA MP500 since upgrading to Yosemite. I will be in your debt!
    Thank you most kindly!

  • Unable to print to directly connect printer via USB when on VPN

We are experiencing and issue when users connect to the VPN and want to print. The printers in question so far are all HP printers J6450, J6500, J4500, F4280. There is the exception of one user who has a J6450 in one office and a K80 in another, the K80 will work over the VPN but the 6450 will not.
All the printers are hooked up via USB none are wireless so there should not be any issue with not being a split tunnel VPN. The problem is the computer will not communicate with the printer while on the VPN so they cannot print locally, but as soon as they disconnect they are able to communicate and print.
We have eliminated the possibility of Sophos (our antivirus/firewall) blocking anything by turning any services off, and also completely uninstalling it. We use checkpoint for our VPN. I am just curious if anyone has ran into an issue like this in the past and what they did to rectify the issue.

  • New Officejet Pro 6830 will not print via USB connection. It scans great to PC. It copies.

New HP Officejet Pro 6830 for user to have local USB printer/scanner at desk.  User runs win 7 64 bit on a network.  Raninstall through setup.exe.  Followed steps, connected printer via USB when it said to and it detected it and finished install. You can use HP Scan software and it scans to the PC perfectly.  It will not print from any application or even a testpage from the Printer Properties page.  If you go to the maintenance application it will print status and test page.  If you run HP Scan and Print doctor it does it's thing, gives all Green Check marks and lets you print a test page fine, but it stillwill not print even a test page from the printer properties page (start/Devices and  Pritners/right click on Officejet Pro 6830, select Printer Properties for Officejet Pro 6830 (not the Fax 6830), and click print test page.   It does not seethe printer.  It is a networked PC and has network defined HP network printers as well but user wanted a printer/scanner at his desk.   I actually took the unit and connected to my laptop which is same win 7 64 bit platform and it does the same thing.   I disable the virus protection to do the install so that is not an issue.  It clearly sees and installs the printer, andlike I said the HP Scan works fine so it is connected via the USB to the PC, but it will not print.   I have tried to install from the CD, and removed device and tried to install from the new downloaded drivers as well and it just does not want to print.I have conected to different USB ports, and like I said actually tried it on a different PC and had same results. Guidance certainly would be appreciated.

Hi , I see by your post that you can scan, but are unable to print over the USB connection. I would be happy to help you.
I have provided a document for setting Security permissions for printing to see if that will help. If the issue persists, reinstall the printer on the Administrator Account to see if you have the same results.Unlock Hidden Administrator Account and install the printer on this account:  Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD. CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'. Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:yes and hit enter. Next, close CMD and restart your computer. When your computer comes on log into the new account that should show. It will be called Administrator and will not have a password on it. If your computer automatically logs into your account after restart than go to your start menu click the arrow beside 'shutdown' and choose 'switch user'. Now log into the Administrator account we just unlocked.Under the Administrator account, install the printer software. Test the printer. To turn off the Admin account start back at step 1 and type in net user administrator /active:no.Please let me know the outcome. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank You.

  • HP LaserJet 6MP & HP JetDirect 300x connection problem

I've done a search and read these threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11078808#11078808
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11086516#11086516
Still can't get my printer to print.
    Here's my set-up:
I have an iMac and a HP LaserJet 6MP. I used to use the AsanteTalk gadget (and an AppleTalk cable), which enabled my printer and iMac to communicate perfectly via an ethernet cable and the ethernet port on my computer. Now I've upgraded to Snow Leopard. So, I read the discussions here, and purchased the HP Jet Direct 300x (from eBay... it took me two tries, 7 days for the auction to end and another 4 days for the thing to be delivered).
    What I've done so far:
Purchased a parallel cable for the printer.
Connected the cable to the printer and the JetDirect.
Connected the ethernet cable from the the JetDirect to the iMac's ethernet port.
Hit the "test" button on the JetDirect to get the "Configuration Page".
FIRST, using the same ethernet cable I'd been using with my AsanteTalk, it gave me an IP address of "0.0.0.0". Then I tried changing to a different ethernet cable. (I'm not sure what the difference between the two are, other than one is yellow and one is orange.)
Then I got the Configuration Page printout of: "IP ADDRESS: 192.0.0.192"
(which I discovered from the HP website is one of two factory defaults for this device.)
I tried going to "Add Printer" in my "Print & Fax" settings.
I chose the Protocol: "HP Jetdirect - Socket"
In the IP Address field, I tried typing that IP address, but then all I get is the endless Status window that says "Determining Installable Options..." and "Status: Connecting to printer..."
I went to the "Network" settings and under "Ethernet" it has sayings "Configure Using DHCP" and has an IP Address that starts with 169... so I tried putting that IP address in the Add Printer field. That didn't work either.
So, now what?? I've been unable to print for two weeks and it's maddening.
Your help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

It sounds like you figured it out, but the HP JetDirect 300x needs to be connected to your Network, not directly to your Mac. If your AT&T DSL/Cable Modem doubles as a router with additional Ethernet ports, you plug the HP JetDirect 300x into one of the modem's available Ethernet ports. The router will assign an IP address to the JetDirect. You then print the configuration page for the JetDirect to see the IP address that it was given. Then you add the Printer to your Mac using the IP option, and the HP JetDirect-Socket selection. Type in the IP address in the top section, and then choose HP LaserJet 6P/6MP - PostScript for the PPD file in the lower section. You can also change the IP address in the lower section to re-name the printer as HP LaserJet 6MP before clicking the Add button.
If the AT&T Modem only has a single Ethernet port to connect to your Mac, then you would have to buy a Cable/DSL Router (such as the Linksys WRT54G) to connect additional computers (and the HP JetDirect) to your modem, essentially creating your own home network to share your internet connection. It sounds like your AT&T Modem has additional Ethernet ports since it also features Wireless access.

  • Jetdirect 300x print server wont print from my imac

I have an iMac running 10.6.8 and I would like to print over my newtwork using a hp jetdirect 300x which is attached to a hp 5p lazerjet printer. The windows xp notebook i have works fine through it. I can see a jetdirect socket on the list on my Mac when i am trying to connect to it using the add a printer function and i printed out the pcl config page using my windows notebook. I used the ip address from there but nothing i do gets a print order through. either it unendingly tries to  connect and doesn't or it shows a printer in the selection window but registers a busy will try in 5 seconds or does not connect. I understand apple discontinued appletalk with this operating system and I could find no drivers or printserver software on hp's website for apple to download to make this work. can anyone suggest something to do to make my iMac and printserver work together. I have another hp color lazerjet 2600n that works with the iMac just by plugging it in and loading the cd that came with it. I don't have a cd for the Jetdirect 300x. Could i get one somewhere and would it have the apple drivers to make this work if I could?

    vic11,
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .
    I hope this helps.

  • Connecting HP LaserJet P3015 printer (via Cat5e) to Extreme base

I've configured my network (thanks to the help of this forum):
Airport Extreme Base station (extended by Airport Express).
My laptops (connected wirelessly) run OS10.7.5.  I am using Airport Utility 6.3.1
I am attempting to configure an HP LaserJet P3015n (which apparently is part of the HP3010 series) via ethernet cable.  I've connected the ethernet cable from Airport Extreme to printer.
Previously, I had successfully configured the HP3015n via USB cable when my Airport Express was my "main" base station.
But now I'm unable, since configuring the Airport Extreme as my main base station and the printer via Cat5e cable, to get the HP3015n recognized via Print & Scan in the Sys Prefs or through the printer window (e.g. when you print a doc via MS Word).
I read this Apple Support Doc:  "OS X Mountain Lion: Set up an IP printer" (even though I'm using 10.7.5) to see if I could glean some info.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11478?viewlocale=en_US
    What I've done or noted:
    1) removed the old p3015n listing from that I had configured via USB in case something needs to be reset
    2) selected the 3015n printer (via the + sign) and tried to add software drivers for it.  I select the 3015n printer as the one listed "nearby" printer (and I wonder if that printer is coming up because it was previously configured on my network or if this is a "fresh" "sighting" by my network?  When I do attempt to download software for it, Apple at first reports that the software is avail but after what seems to be an attempted download, that it can't be installed.
    3) I note that the HP printer address (which I gleaned form the printer's LCD screen) is 10.0.1.9
    4) The driver appears to be named 3010 even though the printer is 3015.  Previously I had installed the 3010 driver and that is the name by which the printer has previously been recognized.
    5)  I was able to printer out some pages on the printer via the LCD screen with all kinds of info.  Including an "Embedded Jetdirect page," "Embedded Protocol page," and a "Configuration page."  My understanding from reading a few Apple Support Docs previously is that Jetdirect is among the ways that I can configure the printer.  So maybe that is one way?
Thanks for your time and insights!

Most older HP LaserJets must be assigned a new static IP address any time the router changed. Based on the excellent information in this thread and others, I compiled a complete protocol for doing this and in particular when using a newer (2013) Airport Extreme.  My printer is an HP LaserJet 4050N.
Connect the LaserJet to one of the Airport Extreme's ethernet LAN ports using a Cat5e cable.
    Open the Airport Utility
Click on the Icon of the base station to confirm the LAN IP address (usually 10.0.1.1).
Click the Edit button and then the Internet menu to display the Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.240.0).
    Close by clicking Cancel.
    On the LaserJet
Click the green ‘GO’ button until the display reads ‘Offline’
Click ‘MENU’ 7 times or until ‘EIO 2 JETDIRECT MENU’ shows
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘CFG NETWORK=NO *’ is displayed
Press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘YES’
    Press ‘SELECT’
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘CFG TCP/IP=NO*’ is displayed
Press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘YES’
    Press ‘SELECT’
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘BOOTP=NO’ is displayed (or press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘NO’ and then press ‘SELECT’)
    Press ‘ITEM’ button until
‘IP BYTE 1=XXX’ is displayed and where I have put ‘XXX’ using the ‘VALUE’ button enter the first number of the ‘IP’ address displayed in ‘Airport Utility’ (usually 10).
Repeat this procedure for ‘BYTE 2, 3 AND 4’ by using entering a value each time using the ‘VALUE’ button and then pressing ‘SELECT’ before finally moving onto the next ‘IP BYTE’ value using the ‘ITEM’ button.
After all of the ‘IP’ values have been entered pressing the ‘ITEM’ button will display ‘SM BYTE 1=XXX’ – this is the ‘Subnet Mask’ value. Follow the same process as for the ‘IP’ address and enter the values given in the ‘Ethernet’ pane in ‘Network’ under ‘System Preferences’.
After entering the final ‘Subnet Mask (SM)’ value (BYTE 4) press ‘SELECT’ and finally press the green ‘GO’ button.
Open System Preferences and click on "Print & Scan".
Click on the ‘+’ tab on the left of the ‘Printers’ Pane.
    Click on the ‘IP’ tab.
From the drop down 'Protocol' menu select 'Line Printer Daemon'.
In the Address field enter the ‘IP’ values that you entered in the printer except change the last digit (usually 1) to 100 (usually 10.0.1.100).  (The base station can manage more than 100 IP values and this ensures the first 99 other assigned IPs will not conflict.)
In the 'Print Using' menu choose a Driver/Model (if an appropriate one is not set automatically).
    Click ‘Add’.
Close the 'Print & Scan' window.
The Printer name will appear as the IP address you assigned in the 'Printer' pull down menu in the Print window of your applications. Select it to print to that printer.

  • Using HP Jetdirect 300X print server with OS 10.4 Ethernet/Airport?

I am trying to speed up my connection to my older HP 5MP Postscript printer by switching to an HP Jetdirect 300X print server. I was previously printing through a Farralon ethernet-to-Localtalk adapter, but this can be very slow and I found that printing from a PC to this printer over its parallel port was about 20 times faster (it would sometimes take up to 50 minutes to print one document over the ethernet-to-Localtalk adapter). HP claims that this Jetdirect 300X print server will be even faster than printing from a PC and I will still be able to use Postscript from the Macs.
BUT, HP does not give adequate info how to set up this print server with a Mac network, despite recommending it. The info I have found so far seems to require being a PC systems and network administrator to understand it. (very high-techese) Does anyone have experience setting this up with OS 10.4? I do still have one old Mac running OS 9 that I can set up in a pinch if I have to, but I would prefer to be able to get rid of OS 9 completely. I also have one computer with Windows XP Home Edition if I can use that to set up the server and then operate it with Macs.
The newer Macs are iMac G5, Powerbook G4, and G4 DA Tower. I do not currently have a router, except for an Airport Express. My various computers are linked together with an 8-port ethernet hub, with the Airport Express serving as a bridge to the Airport-equipped Macs.

I'm not familiar with the JetDirect, but I can tell you that I have an HP Laserjet 4m at work set up to receive print jobs from both our Macs and PCs.
We have it hooked up to a Windows 2000 PC which is sharing the printer. The same concept would apply to XP. Just install the printer and then share the printer. Keep the share name short (something like HP5 or so - OSX does not seem to like long shared printer names). As long as you have at least OSX 10.3 you can use the Printer Setup Utility to to Add a printer. Select Windows shared printers. Locate the Windows XP printer on the network and have the Mac connect to it. You'll see the shared printer in the list. Select the driver and add the printer.
You'll need to have file sharing established on the XP computer, or at least the printer sharing and you will want to use the account that the computer logs in to. You'll also need a printer driver on the Mac side. HP does not have this. However, there are several drivers available for HP printers under CUPS (Common Unix Printing System). Do a Google search for "Gutenprint" and you'll get the website for the drivers. You'll want to have that installed before adding the printer in OSX.
BTW, it won't work with OS9, unless you have DAVE or some other Win/Mac application that allows communication between PCs and Macs.
It's a small amount of work, but the drivers are free which I imagine is probably a lot cheaper than the JetDirect.

  • Connecting MacBook to printer via wireless network

I have a wireless network via cable modem with some PCs attached and a printer but am having trouble connecting my new MacBook to the HP LaserJet 2100 printer via wireless. I do not have airport express and not sure I need it to have the MacBook print to this printer. Please advise.

    Hi topgunner,
How is the printer connected? Are you trying to share it via a PC through wireless? Or is it connected directly to a router/hub that is enabled for printer sharing?

  • I cannot find the 'WPA passphrase' to connect my printer via wireless and cannot find it in Airport utility (MAC says it cannot find any open airports)

    MAC OS X 10.6.3 - desktop Mac
I browsed similar questions and saw that someone recommended going to the Airport Utility and then selecting manual set up or something- anyways, it could not find any airports. I have brought my printer from my house as my BF's has died - this is the first time it's asked for a WPA passphrase. We tried a very long series of capital letters and numbers as well as the password for the internet and both times the printer said "invalid passphrase"..... ......

Airport Utility is for administration of genuine Apple Base Stations. If you have a different Brand, Airport Utility can do nothing for you.
    I think they're using ethernet.
To connect a Printer via Ethernet, no password is needed.
We already tried the password for the internet and that did not work...
If a password is required to connect to the Internet, then WiFi is likley being used, and that WiFi password is the one needed for the Printer connect wirelessly as well.
What make&model Printer? Is it indeed a Wireless Printer? Most connect via USB, but that would force it to use a specific computer to assist in printing.

  • Lion 10.7.5 cant connect to printer via Buffalo print server

    Hi everyone,
I'm at my wits end with this one having spent over 20 hours on it.
I have a Macbook Air running Lion 10.7.5 and a Macbook running OSX 10.6.8.  I have a Photosmart 8050 printer attached to a Buffalo Linkstation Live LS-CH1 running firmware 1.60 (the latest version for this model).  The Linkstation has a printserver which is attached via USB to the printer, the Linkstation is attached to a wireless router, for amound other things, wireless printing.
The long and the short of my problem is, I can get the Macbook running 10.6.8 to print without a problem, works fantastic, but I can not get the Air running 10.7.5 to print through the print server even though the printers are installed the very same way on both machines.  The error from the print que is "unable to connect to printer" even though it seems to connect successfully to the Linkstation, as in my setup a username and password must be entered to access the printer, even though a user is logged in to the file server.  Not to get confused, I am 99% convinced the problem is with the Macbook Air running 10.7.5.
I installed the printers using the Windows method, Workgroup -> Linkstation -> Printer then selecting the HP 8000 series driver version 5.0.4.  I have also tried every other install method available, however as I understand it, this is the recommended method for this print server setup.
I have checked the network setup, driver versions and even though it does not seem to cover my printer have GutenPrint 5.2.9 installed.
The printer does work when connected directly to USB however.
If anyone has any idea why I cant get the Macbook Air running 10.7.5 to print via the print server on the Linkstation when 10.6.8 works perfectly, then please HELP!
    Thank you

    Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait for few  minutes.
Connect the router back to to the wall.
Power the router back on. Wait  until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.

  • Macbook will not connect to printer via the network

I have my G5 computer connected to my home network airport extreme with an ethernet cable. I have a new Canon MX 860 (which will work over a network) which is also connected to the airport extreme with an ethernet cable (wired lan connection). The G5 and the Canon work well together; printing and scanning etc.
I have a Macbook that will not connect to the Canon via the network. I have checked and rechecked the setup and am stumped. I get various failure notices:
"The "Canon..." printer could not be found in your list of printers" (altho it is listed)
"Unable to get printer status (forbidden)"
"Status: In use, Default" (altho the printer is ready and not in use)
"Operation could not be completed -client-error-not-possible"
Both computers are setup for printer sharing and the printer list allows the Canon to be shared.
The network works well supporting Macbook and several Tivos.
Any help on what I should try next?
    Thanks for any suggestions
    John

    Hello John,
For starters, you don't need printer sharing enabled. Since the MX860 is connected to the extreme via Ethernet, then the MacBook should be able to connect directly to the MX860 via wireless or wired.
For either type of connection, you need to add the printer via More Printers > Canon IJ Network. You should not connect via the Default browser view, as this will only show the shared printer via the G5 (which you should disable). In fact, based on the errors you are getting, it does sound like you have added the printer by selecting the shared offering.
So I would delete the current printer queue and add again, using the More Printers > Canon IJ Network menu. This window should show the MX860 with its MAC address in brackets. When you select it and press Add, the printer will be created with a name something like 'Canon MX860 series (00.00.85.xx.xx.xx)'.
If the printing still fails with the printed added as above, then please reply.
