Connecting routers to dual "core" switches

At the core of my network I have pair of Catalyst 6509s with Sup720s. These are configured with a number of VLANs spread across both switches, using VRRP for fail-over. Servers with dual NICs are connected to both switches, providing a reasonable degree of redundancy. Likewise, my "edge" switches have dual dot1q trunk uplinks to both switches. PVST is configured. The idea is that the loss of one switch won't bring the whole network down. So far, so good.
What I now want to do is connect some new 3845 routers in a similarly redundant way. I want to connect Gi0/0 to a port on Switch1, and Gi0/1 to Switch2, so that both switches have a direct connection to the router (which then handles a T3 link to another office, for example).
Initially I thought I could just configure a port on the 6509 with an IP address and make point to point links to the 3845, and let OSPF worry about the routing - but the Sup720 doesn't let me do that with a switch port. I considered making the links dot1q trunks, but then where would I set IP addresses on the router? At the subinterface level? When I try that, it complains about overlapping networks on different interfaces.
I'm looking for some sample configs or "best practice" advice, or specific pointers to documents on cisco.com that might explain how I should go about this. Unfortunately searches (on cisco.com or google) return just Too Much Information - it's like trying to drink from a fire hose. Any pointers would be appreciated!

You should be able to assign an ip address on cat6k sup720 if you are running native ios on sup 720.
If you are running catos then you will not be able to do that and you can have it configured as trunk and connect to the router.Also I do not think that you need subinterfaces on router and trunk on switch because your cat6k with sup720 must be doing intervlan routing between vlans.
You can just connect it on some port on any vlan and same subnet ip address which you have it on msfc for that vlan you can assign on the router interface and anybody want to go out via t3 link will get routes on sup720 and move out via router vlan.
For suppose you do not want the router to be part of existing vlan you can create one vlan on cat6k sup720 and assign one port to that new vlan and connect the royter to that new vlan port and then create logical interface on msfc for that new vlan and assign an ip address range on that logical vlan and same subnet ip address range you can assign on router physical interface.
Any one from other vclan get routed on sup 720 msfc and will move out via the vlan on which you have connected the router.
because you have only one router you will not be able to maintain box level redundancy by which i mean if the router goes down t3 will be unreachable.

  • Redundant Supervisors in a Dual-Core Catalyst 6500 network

    Read the PDF doc called:

    It essentially recommends that dual supervisors only be used in SPOF points - not in dual-distribution or dual-core switches.
    The rationale is that a layer three routing protocol convergence (EIGRP for instance) only takes 60-200ms, but a supervisor failover using NSF and SSO takes up to 3 seconds.
    In practice, I almost always see dual supervisors recommended in the core (and that's what I've recommended as well).
    I can see keeping dual supervisors in the core because the customer may place a higher value on redundant hardware capability than an up to three second convergence, but I'd like to hear other rationales why dual supervisors should be used in a redundant core given the definite speed advantage of routing protco convergence over convergence following NSF/SSO failover.

    In a completely clean textbook design where the cores are mirrors of each other and only provide transit between distribuition layers, NO, dual sups are not needed and will only slow convergence as the document indicates.
    However, in some live environments this is not always the case, where the textbook does not reflect reality. One core switch can have a configuration or connection that the other core cannot backup. As much as people try to keep their cores clean and symetrical, a fast growing and underfunded network can quickly get messy with one-offs and bandaids that get forgotten about a few months later. In situations like these, having dual sups in the core provides the peace of mind and assurance that 3 seconds can buy (if you can afford it).

  • Connecting core switch to the internet ?

    Hi,
    We have 2 6506's connected through an ether-channel trunk.
    On these 6506's we have configured a vlan, vlan interface and 2 access ports for 2 ASA's.
    These ASA's run in failover mode but only one ASA is physically connected at the moment.
    We want to be more resilient so our provider has provided us with a redundant setup of routers for our internet connection.
    However, for this construction they would need a layer 2 connection on our side to have HSRP running.
    There are 2 options in my opinion :
    - Buy a set of switches to facilitate the layer-2 connection between te routers and to connect the outside of the ASA's.
    - Instead of buying 2 new switches, create a new unrouted vlan on our core 6506's and use access-ports for the routers and the ASA's.
    But how safe is it to connected the core switch with an unrouted vlan to the internet router ?
    In terms of vlan hopping or other possible attacks ?
    I think i have to disable DTP, Spanning-Tree, CDP and maybe a lot more ?

    I am as far as applying this to secure the port :

  • Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

    In the last days I had problems with my computer just going off randomly after some time... As I found out the CPU fan was too loose... Now I somehow fastened it so it seems to work normally now.
    Today I noticed (I'm not sure whether it's now the first time or I just didn't see it) that on booting I see just one Arch logo, although I have a Dual Core processor and normally there are 2 logos... I checked whether GRUB has the option nosmp set which was not the case. cat /proc/cpuinfo gave me just one core.. Then I tried to boot the arch live cd (the 2008.06) and cpuinfo had both there!
    The BIOS says that there are still 2 as well... so my first idea, that one core is broken because of overheating seems to be wrong, it's impossible that just one core breaks, doesn't it?
    So my question is - how do I get my core to be recognized again? I have the new 2.6.29 kernel.. could this be the problem?
    My second question is - the information about launching daemons on booting appears AFTER showing the login prompt (I login via tty) [EDIT: This had to do with the OpenNTPD daemon...]

    Please help me to choose Core and Edge switches and all required hard ware and software. 
    the spec details as per below 
    Core Switches
    1. High performance, highly scalable core switch to provide multi-10GE connectivity to various segments in the network.
    2. Switch should have redundant switch fabric and routing engines or management / supervisor modules
    3.should have separate control and forwarding planes

    So far, based on this document, the client wants a chassis that can support up to 700 Gbps backplane.  The only candidate, other than a full-blown Nexus solution, is the 6807-X.  
    Next, the document also states dual supervisor card with two spare slots.  Good luck trying to get that much empty space on a 6807-X.  This means 6509E.  You can't use a 6513E because of line-card-to-slot limitation.  
    If you look under the heading "Edge Switching", the first sentence already makes references to 6800ia switch.
    There's also a reference stating that the product should have a 100 Gbps backplane.  You can take the 6509E chassis out of the equation.  
    So you see, I am suspicious about the authenticity of the document.  I agree with mali's and devil's recommendation that if you are serious, you would be engaging Cisco SE/AM in your region.  There are only three reasons, that I can think of, why you've posted this here.  One of them is the intended purpose of this document (and the audience).

    I have 2 core 6509/SUP720b/PFC3/MSFC3 which are etherchannel attached. Due to budgetary restraints, we have no distribution layer and access switch trunk(2950, 3500xls) dual uplinks that are attached one to each 6509. Is it possible to form a etherchannel between the 2950 and the uplinks on seperate 6509 core switches. I have not tested it yet but wanted to know has anyone tested this configuration or using it in production?

    No, etherchannel which is combining two or more ports to form a single logical port must terminate to a single switch. For example, switch A have gig 1 and 2 and each port connects to switch B and Switch C, you cannot create channel on switch to combine gig 1 and 2 because the ports does not connect to the same single switch. It is not allowed and it will not work. However, if you have four links from switch A, ports 1,2,3, and 4, where ports 1 and 2 connects to switch B and ports 3 and 4 connects to switch c, then you can create a channel combining 1 and 2 to swtich B and a separate channel combining 3 and 4 to switch C.

    I want to allow the whole Intranet but few intranet websites also needs access to the internet.
    Can we create such Access-List with the above requirement.
    I tried to create the ACL on the switch but it blocks the whole internet access.
    i want to do it for a subnet not for a specific IP.

    The exact syntax depends on your subnets and how they connect to the Internet. If you can share a simple diagram that would be much more informative.
    In general just remember that access-lists are parsed from the top down and as soon as a match is found, the processing stops. So you put the most specific rules at the top. also, once you add an access-list, there is an implicit "deny any any" at the end.
    The best approach is to create some network object-groups and then refer to them in your access list. From your description, that would be something like three object-groups - one for the Intranet (Intranet), one for the allowed servers that can use Internet (allowed_servers), and a third for the permitted Internet sites (allowed_sites).
    You would then use them as follows:
    ip access-list extended main_acl
    permit any object-group intranet any
    permit object-group allowed_servers object-group allowed_sites any
    interface vlan
    ip access-group main_acl in

  • Error while runing diadem asynchronous script from labview on dual core processor

    Urgent need of some help / advice here!
    Single core runs fine... dual core produces error: Error in <XYaxis.vbs> (line: 17, column: 1): Error while opening object. The object currently open has no subobjects. Forgotten ObjClose?
    The main software built in labview used for daq and analysis generates a PDF report on completion of a test, utilising diadem. For this I use the diadem express vi in labview to generate a multi page report, whereby I use for loop to iterate an array of channels for each page. This for loop has a shift register too. After each page I run a script to adjust a few parameters like linear/log, begin/end and line thickness using the diadem connectivity tookit. See script below:

    There is also a screenshot of the vi: (script file is generated by the Dscript vi and saved to disk. then path is passed to the diadem script vi.)
    What I find is, after the first report page is complete in diadem the second page ALWAYS shows the error as shown at the top. However, on my P4 laptop with single core (no hyperthreading) its runs FINE EVERY TIME with any given number of channels/pages in the report.
    My current chain of thought is that the superfast dual core is doing something in parallel therefore not waiting for the previous page to complete or finish closing its object!? however, in my for loop I use a shift register as named before, surely this kind of loop cannot be divided over more cores/parallel threads? as it has to wait for the response of the previous.!?!? Im running LV 8.6 on WinXP for this project and I didnt even think multicore processing for for loops is included in this version.
    The other thing is... this script used to run fine on the dual core until I added the last part that uses a for loop to get every line of the graph to be the thinkness I need. Is this for loop the culprit? Can I stop it from executing over multiple cores/threads? I read a post saying that from diadem 8 there was multi core support. this triggered my doubt

    Hi Al,
    I have a theory, but only you can test it.  In your VI screenshot, you have the boolean input for the DIAdem Execute Script.vi set to asynchronous=TRUE.  My theory says that if you change that boolean (and all others like it) to asynchrous=FALSE that the error will not occur on the multicore computer.  The other thing you could try would be to consolidate all REPORT commands that pertain to one REPORT page into a single ActiveX call to DIAdem.  In the screenshot below you have at least 2 separate VIs calling DIAdem, so that's at least 2 separate ActiveX calls for one REPORT sheet.
    Here's what I think is going on.  On a multicore computer there is the potential for different ActiveX commands from LV to DIAdem to execute on different cores, which may result in a timing problem on the DIAdem side.  DIAdem 11.x and earlier runs exclusively on 1 CPU, so the incoming ActiveX commands should be sequenced correctly by DIAdem's ActiveX to-do list.  Theoretically DIAdem should serialize all the incoming ActiveX commands (regardless of which CPU processed them) in the order that they arrived at the DIAdem ActiveX server(s).  On the sending side, LabVIEW's dataflow execution should theoretically guarantee that all the ActiveX requests are being sent in the correct order.  But it is theoretically possible that the operating system's ActiveX processing queue might not send all the ActiveX commands to DIAdem in the order that it receives them from LabVIEW-- IF YOU'VE SELECTED ASYNCHRONOUS PROCESSING.

    while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
    the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
    / -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
    and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
    boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
    after selecting it boots with solaris and
    after few seconds it restarts
    please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors

    OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
    I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
    file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
    cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
    I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
    I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?

    For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.

  • Jagged wavy lines edge of CRT display with Dual Core Mac mini

    My friend recently bought a Dual Core Intel Mac mini and when hooking it up to a 19 inch MAG monitor there are often wavy lines on the edges of the screen. They go up and down both sides, are jagged, and also are not static but moving quickly. Sometimes it seems to behave normally while other times if it doesn't show up on the boot screen it will show up after a little bit of use.
    At first it seems that the more stuff I opened the worse it got, so I thought it could be the shared video RAM as he did not upgrade from the original 512 , but that should only slow the computer down anyway. Now I think rather than the RAM I think it could be related to the Apple DVI to VGA adapter, resloution/refresh rate, or just bad video hardware. I can't rule out that it just won't play nice with the majority of CRT monitors out there either. Sometimes changing the resolution/refresh rate helps and other time it doesn't. From what I heard my friend experienced wavy lines somewhat on his own monitor but I don't think it did it when using a DVI to HDMI cable to his Sony 50 LCD (and I didn't see it when hooking it up to mine either).
    If anyone has any idea what could be going on I would greatly appreciate it. The reason it is so important is that my friend decided that the Mac mini was kind of an impulse buy and didn't need his iBook and another computer for his TV so he is going to sell it to my brother who is in need of a computer. So I don't want him to get into something that will give him problems right away.

    So is the MAG monitor your brother's monitor? That wasn't clear.
    What you are seeing will most likely be limited to the MAG monitor. The MAG is experiencing some kind of noise coupling in to horizontal sync, likely from it's own power supply. You are correct that this will be related to the sync rate. Changing the vertical refresh to something higher, like 85 Hz or higher if available, might help to mask the noise. Also, power supply loading will affect how the noise manifests, so you weren't imagining when you thought that opening more applications made it worse. It didn't have anything to do with the mini but rather the different average picture level on the screen was changing the monitor's power supply loading and hence changing the beat frequency between hsync and the power supply's switching frequency.
    I think it is safe to say most of what you see is bound to the monitor and not the mini. Furthermore, if you are stuck with this monitor, you can probably lessen the appearance of the noise by mucking with the refresh rate out of the mini.

  • Original 22" Cinema Display and G5 Dual-Core Machine

    Good Morning, All!
    Is there a special adapter or converter I need to run my old 22" Cinema Display on my G5? I had to go back to the Dr. Bot I had when I had the monitor on a G4 450. With the arrival of the G4 933, I was happily able to do away with the Dr. Bot "octopus" and take full advantage of all the display on-board stuff (power switch, USB ports, etc.) However, the new dual-core has forced me back to that friggin' Dr. Bot, even though the G5 books says it's ready for ALL Cinema displays. Well, obviously not mine.
    A part number and a place to purchase would be most appreciated!!! I got spoiled to the power switch on the monitor. It was really rather dumb for Apple to put a metal start-up button on the front panel of the G5. With the air as dry as it is right now, the static is horrible and I don't like giving the machine a jolt when I started up in the morning. I find myself having to ground to something before I ever touch the machine these days.

    more pins than the connector on the video card. How
    am I supposed to get around that?!
    Are you sure the display is DVI (screw knobs), and not ADC (clips)?
    If it is DVI and has six round pins (2 X 3) in the middle that are not on the video card connector, the extra pins are for dual link, which is only used on the 30" display. Depending on which video card you have, one or both connectors may be dual link, but you don't need the extra pins for the 22" display.

    installed switchresx, unable to make custom resolution 1366x768 active. Then realised monitor was connected to DVI-2 so moved it over to DVI-1 and restarted G5. Voila I have a host of new resolutions that fit the bill perfectly.
    Just not sure whether it would of worked without switchresx!
