Connecting second computer - problem

I have been trying to connect a second computer to an existing Airport Express network - and have failed miserably so far. I have the sneaking suspicion that I'm missing something obvious here - so any pointers will be greatly appreciated!
I have an Airport Express and a 1-year old Powerbook G4. The Airport is connected to a cable modem. Everything works fine.
The second computer is a 17-inch iMac G5. I bought an Airport card and installed it following the instructions. I've done this kind of stuff before so I'm pretty sure it's not an installation problem.
But my iMac won't detect the Airport station.... I've read the manual, tried to follow instructions, fiddled with the settings, moved the computer closer to the airport station, etc. etc. Nothing improved the situation.
I have also tried setting up a computer-to-computer network. The Powerbook then recognises the iMac and I can enter a password. So I presume the Airport card is working... But afterwards, I don't see any new volume under "Network" - which is where I would expect to find the iMac now. Mhm.
I apologize if this is all a bit unspecific - but I'm happy to provide further clues if pointed in the right direction.
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Sebastian

I have a similar problem
and i am not too compter literate
I have a dual g5 hooked to an extreme DI-624 wireless router with tiger.
it works perfectly wireless.
I have my secondary computer, an old emac with an old airport card (slow b version) on panther.
I just installed the airport card (b) but it does not see my network on the dual g5. it sees other networks around the area.
how do i get it to see the g5 network???

  • JVC Everio HD connecting to computer problem

I found one answer, which didn't work for me. Sorry, I forgot the person's name - there was a list in point form. It was to plug in camera, then turn on both computer and camera, then select playback on camera, then select PC Data Backup (which I couldn't do on camera, or is this on computer? I looked for it but couldn't find it on computer), then open iMovie. Well, iMovie still tells me there is no camera connected. And I have 06 and 08 iMovie versions and neither one recognized the camera was connected. I checked the cable and to be sure it was securely plugged in. And I no longer remember WHERE I saw that it's supposed to be a 6 pin firewire and not the USB cable. I took the camera to the Mac Outpost and the guy there said they don't have that cable. Does such a cable exist? So now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions.

I didn't understand the answer to one thread for someone else about loading the clips - I didn't realize that person meant to take one clip and load it into iMovie, then another clip and load it, and so on. When I took my video camera to the Mac Outpost store, it loaded without any problems, all at once. My computer is considered 8th generation (?) (4 or 5 years old and doesn't have PC based intel, or whatever the new system is called) ... I'm just so grrrrrrr annoyed something so basic is soooo complicated. Thanks to everyone who read this. And I hope all those who are still having their own problems find an answer.

  • Connecting second computer only tries to authenticate connection

I have finally gotten the Cisco e1000 connection with my laptop. I would like my wife's laptop to take the main connection rather than a non-encrypted guest connection. When I use Cisco connect and try to connect my wife's laptop to the network it connects but remains in the authenticating connection status.
It eventually chooses the second connection which is guest status.
What am I doing wrong that won't allow the connection with router to finally authenticate; I have tried to run the Cisco connect "connecting a device" part but it does not seem to work.

E1000 router uses WPA2 type encryption.
    this is what i think:
    1. If your if your computer is running XP, check if it has SP3, if not update it
    2. If your wireless adapter is Atheros, that one has issue with wireless-N routers (check other forum sites)

  • Connecting second computer

I have just installed BT Infinity which works well (most of the time) on my main computer. However when I try to connect by laptop (which is a Mac Book) it will work occasionally. When I enter my wireless key it comes up with a connection timeout message. I have tried connecting with an Ethernet cable but that still does not work.

    Hi Curlymac,
Make sure that you have fully updated MacOSX and then Repair Permissions.
Next, I suggest that you delete any previous setups for any older HHs (or other routers that you no longer use) from the Airport Network settings (Advanced button) and then delete any old unused passwords in your Keychain. These things laying around sometimes cause this sort of issue.
Then re-boot your MacBook and try connecting again.
You could also try manually setting a specific wireless channel in the HH settings to see if co-channel interference with a neighbour's router is the source of the problem. iStumbler may help you to check for this problem.
If you continue to have problems, you could request a replacement Infinity HH.
I have set aside my Infinity HH and use an Apple Airport Extreme. Goes like a train and the dual-band wireless gives me dramatically better coverage that the HH does.
Recent MacBooks can work on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi, but the sensing is automatic and cannot be changed manually.

  • Connect second computer

My daughter is home form college for the summer and would like to connect to the internet with her macbook pro laptop. How can I do this? We have a westell 6100f modem. Have talked to Verizon support and have had a hard time understanding them both technical and english.

Do you have a Ethernet Hub/Switch or a second router?
The reason I ask is because...
Unless I am mistaken, the westell 6100f has only one LAN port and USB. And you can not use both the USB and the ethernet ports at the same time.

  • Installed itunes match on second computer, problems

I have installed match on my computer, iphone and ipad. I went to my wife's computer, signed in with my account
and went to activate match on hers. I got a warning about not being able to download for ninety days (didn't understand)
but accepted. When all was done, I signed back into her account but there are none of the songs mixed with my cloud.
Did I do something wrong? I thought you could hook up 10 devices to your cloud. I thought I'd see my cloud content, any ideas??

When you delete a song from iTunes it should bring up a dialogue box checking that you want to delete it, with a checkbox included saying "also delete this song from iCloud". Just make sure that you don't check that box. The entry will then stay in iTunes with the download box next to it.
If you try to delete a song that isn't on the local computer it will check that you do actually want to delete it from the cloud. Don't do this unless you want rid of it from the Cloud.

  • Second Computer - Problem Loading purchased ITUNES to NANO

I initially created my playlists on a laptop which is no longer web friendly. I've bought some iTunes and want to update the Nano without losing what's on there. Is it possible? I've tried to "update Nano" but it's not doing anything...Please advise... THANKS in advance.

    Hello,
If you go to "Edit -> Preferences -> iPod" in iTunes, what setting are you on?
If it is one of the "automatic" settings, then when you connect your iPod, iTunes should automatically update with your iPod, putting songs onto it from the iTunes library that currently aren't on it. It will be either SELECTED songs or ALL songs. (depends on what you set it for).
If you are on "automatic" however (you currently aren't, though) when you plug in your iPod, iTuens will automatically update with your iPod, which will delete songs off of it that aren't in the iTunes library.
If you've set your option for "manual" (that's what it sounds like), then in this case, to transfer music to your iPod, go to the iTunes library, select the certian songs you want on your iPod, then drag-and-drop them into your iPod'd name in the left source area of iTunes.
    I hope this helps,
    -Kylene

  • Connecting a second computer to BThub 4 via cable

I do not think this is a BT problem but if any one has any advice it will be appreciated.
For a long time I have had 2 computers and a laptop connected through a BT hub 3. One computer (Vista) was connected by ethernet cable with the other two computers (windows XP) connected by wireless. Everything worked well.
Because hub 3 died I now have a Hub 4. However, I need to change the way my computers connect to the Hub. This means that there will be two computers connected by ethernet cable. The original computer connecterd by ethernet cable is set up just as it was prveiously and works well.
I connected the second computer with the ethernet cable supplied by BTand anticipated it would work. Unfortunately, for some reason I can't get the connection to work despite going through the wizard process of connecting from the computer both directly and via the small home network that is already establised.
One irritating thing is that, although I select a "direct cable connection" in the set up process, when trying to connect I get a screen stating dial-up failed and a retry is instigated. I am not using a modem!
I have tried re configuring things but to no avail, so getting to the end of my ideas, i wonder if anyone on the forum could give me some guidance.
    Regards
    David

    Hi
Thanks to you guys for your help. the main problem was the absence of a net work card. This is now in place and I can make a connection tp the internet via the BT Hub. However, there is still one problem and this is as follows.
Computer A (windows XP) and computer B  (Windows Vista) are connected to a small BT hub home network via ethernet cables.
On computer B (which has been successfully connected to the hub for about 2 years) clicking on network places > " view workgroup computers" shows a map which includes the BThub, it's self (B) and computer A.
If I do the same on computer A, it shows it's self but not the othe computer or the hub. Despite this it works perfectly well accessing the internet.
Because I need to transfer files via this network I need to see the othe computer(S) and open files on them, however, I have spent some time trying to establish the presence of other devices on computer A without success.
I have checked folder permissions are granted and I have tried to view the other devices with the firewall switched off but so far no success.
    Suggestions gratefully received.
    Regards,
    David

  • Problems connecting second pc to the router

    Hi everyone,
My first PC is connected to my FIOS router and everything is fine with that. I know the router admin login and the router password. But I am having a hard time connecting my second PC to my FIOS router and to the internet.
I have been using the FIOS Connection Wizard, and I have been getting the following message:
"Connectivity between your computer and your Verizon FIOS router is working fine, however we are unable to login to the router to collect the SSID and WEP Key"
It seems as though the connection wizard does not even acknowledge the router password I enter. I will type in the password, then press enter and the wizard does not seem to do much with the password. I rebooted the router, changed the router login and password, and entered those new details into the wizard, but the wizard wont connect. When I try again, the wizard prompts me for the password of the old admin!
Any ideas regarding how to solve this problem? I appreciate your help.

If you are using the FIOS connection wizard and it is asking for your SSID and WEP you are trying to set up a wirless connection.   Make sure to choose the correct option, it should be something like,  set up new router or internet connection.  ie. Don't choose, setup new wireless connection.
If you still have problems then,
On your computer that successfully connects to the internet, right click your local area connection under network connections and go to properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , highlight it and click the properties button. Use the same settings you find here on your second computer. If your router has DHCP turned off and under these properties your IP and DNS settings are visable then on your second computer input all the same settings except change the last number of your IP address.
    Ex.       1st computer settings  : IP - 192.168.10.15   then
                   Set 2nd computer to : IP - 192.168.10.16
    Hope this helps.
