Connecting Shuffle (4thG) to Mac mini: Keyboard non-responsive

I got a brand new 4th Generation Ipod Shuffle.
When I connect it (USB) to my Mac mini (2008), the wired aluminum Mac USB keyboard no longer responds.  Disconnecting the shuffle returns the keyboard to normal function.
I have Snow Leopard (10.6.8), iTunes 10.6.1(7).
Is this a limitation of the Mac mini? Do some of the USB ports "share" power, and will isolating the Shuffle to an unshared port resolve this? (I don't know which might be shared...)
thanks,
JIm

The hubs in keyboards are passive hubs (drawing power from the USB port at the end of the chain). Sometimes attaching power hungry devices to them causes problems.
Plug the iPod directly into a USB port on the Mini. If it's inconvenient, use a USB extender cable. If you don't have any more free ports, then you want to use a powered hub -- one that has a brick to supply power to hub, not draw it from the USB bus.

  • Connecting Logitech Z5500 to Mac Mini or to Airport?

    All,
I have this cable on order (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002JFN1A/ref=pe_385040_30332190_TE_M3T1_ST1_dp_1) to connect my Logitech Z-5500 to my system.
Should I connect it to my Mac Mini, or to my Airport Time Capsule?
Airport: I can stream media from other devices
Mini: Avoid any lag for audio and video with FaceTime, etc.?
Maybe 6 of one, half dozen of another, but thought I'd ask.
    Thanks!

ok, my problem is solved ... I was able to get the display up by unplugging the hdmi cable from the mac mini, then letting it boot up, then plugging the cable back in ... finally could see the desktop, then reset my display settings to get rid of underscanning - which I had set up the day before so I could see my top menu bar - then set my tv's aspect adjustment to HD Size 2 (which had the same effect as underscanning ... and now I get the display up when start my mac mini ... however, I do notice some fine granularity in my display now (when white windows are opened for example), but I'll deal with that later if it's a real problem ... took hours of research to figure this out ... phew ...

  • Mountain Lion appears to break VNC connection to a headless mac mini.

I connect to my headless mac mini with VNC.  Under lion this worked perfectly.  With Mountain Lion on my mac mini I can connect but many windows do not update properly.  If I connect an external display to the mac mini all is well again.  Any solutions?

    I use splashtop.
Able to reach iPad resolution when i connect to my iPad, when the splashtop session ends, it drops back to 800x600.
Maybe you could try it out and see if splashtop helps expand to 2560 x 1600.

  • How to Connect my PC to Mac Mini Airport wirelessly?

This may be more of a PC question, but I'm trying to connect my PC laptop to my mac mini.
I turned on internet sharing on the Mini.
I can see my Airport wireless network on the PC, it says I'm connected.
I do not have a password enabled on the airport network.
The PC browser says it cannot find the server and will not load a webpage even though the wireless network connection window says I'm connected to my wireless network.
    any ideas?

I would unplug the AirPort Express at this point and see if you can get the Internet sharing with the PC configured.
My Mac mini is connected to the internet by Ethernet cable to my ISP's gateway. I am sharing the Ethernet connection to two iPod Touches via AirPort from my Mac mini. These are the steps for internet sharing from Ethernet to AirPort. See if you have followed them correctly in configuring your kit.
    1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing I highlighted Internet Sharing (do not check the box)
    2. Share your connection from: Ethernet (from the dropdown menu)
    3. To computers using: AirPort (check the little box)
    4. Press the button AirPort Options...
    5. Name your Network
    6. I use Automatic for the channel
    7. I encrypt my network using a 40-bit WEP key
    8. For a non-Apple device you must use only a 5 alphanumeric character, 40-bit WEP password or only a 13 alphanumeric character 128-bit WEP password
    9. Press OK
    10. Check the box for Internet Sharing
    11. Answer any dialog boxes that pop up
    If everything on the Mac end is correct then the issue may lie with the PC since Windows is much more picky about how it is configured. Here is an article that may assist you in getting the PC correct;
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-share-the-internet-connection-between-your-m ac-and-a-pc/
Other things that you could try is to name your network with a short name without spaces, such as your Apple Discussions User Name. Also create WEP passwords of only 5 or 13 alphanumerics. Some also suggest an All Caps password.

  • Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices! Batteries have been changed and they will connect to an older Mac mini. Server will now only see one or the other but not both.

My Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices, either the wireless keyboard or the mouse( both apple products) have tried new batteries, at first it was the mouse that stopped responding, but upon rebooting the computer now the keyboard will not respond and the mouse works. Both work fine on an older Mac mini that I hooked back up to check.

There is absolutely no reason why they should not bothe be able to connect to your WiFi network. The easiest place to start would be to reboot your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again. I would also restart both the iPad and the iPhone.

  • What adapter's do I need to connect existing hardware to Mac mini?

Hi, I have a friend who is thinking of buying a Mac mini to replace his existing Windows PC ... he has a screen, mouse and keyboard (of course) but I do not think any of them will connect directly to the mini ... his screen has a VGA connector and his keyboard and mouse both have PS/2 connectors ... can anyone suggest a way to connect these to the mini?
I have seen these adapters on Amazon ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000FII810/ref=s9asin_image_3?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0BFCGEB5PAQ1ANTDH3Y 8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=139042391&pf_rdi=468294
    and
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-USB-port-PS-adapter/dp/B0007OWNXQ/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197024775&sr=1-1
Will these work? or is there a better way of doing it?
    Thanks, Matt

    Hi.
Regarding the DVI-VGA adapter, the Mac mini comes with one included, this one.
About the keyboard and mouse, those USB-PS/2 adapters are very tricky, and most times they even fail to work on Windows PCs, because many of the peripherals made with PS/2 connector don't have the necessary electronics to support the USB bus. I tried such adapter with several PS/2 keyboards and mice on laptops, and only one mouse worked. He may try, but I think it will not work. He will need a new USB keyboard and mouse.
    Good Luck.

  • Help with Connecting Playstation 3 to mac mini wireless.....

Well, I finally figured out how to share my wireless connection from my mac mini throughout my house.... it wasnt even in the network area, you have to go over to sharing in systems menu, and set up "internet sharing" through your ethernet port... after that it opens up this little mac into a wireless access point to your local ethernet throughout...... but............. even after my iphone, mac, windows laptop, etc.... log on easily... I cannot, Cannot!! get my ps3 to register an IP address. i have everything set up right, and thinking it was because i was ethernet linked through my dads router also downstairs "the main router of the house" and it was blocking me..... i did some studies... well i had another wireless router in the house.. so i plugged my ethernet into it, activated it and set it up.... it works.... then i try the ps3.... voilllaa it works...... so its not the main router blocking..... Why does a shared internet to ethernet mac system not understand what to do with a playstation 3 wirelessly???

  • After "icloud locked", my mac keyboard non-responsive

Guys, I just locked my macbook through icloud (just for testing). Although I know the pin I set, the keyboard became non-responsive so that I cannot type in the pincode to unlock my mac. Ideas?

  • HT201250 Can I use Time Machine to backup a LaCie Hard Drive connected to an Airport Extreme onto a My Book that is connected directly to a Mac Mini?

I have a LaCie 2TB hard drive connected to a Airport Extreme Base Station.  I also have a 1TB MyBook connected to a Mac Mini.  My question is can you backup selected files (photos) from the LaCie drive to the MyBook drive using Time Machine, or any other software?  If it will cost a fortune, I guess I can always just copy the newer files over.

Thank you for such a lightning-fast response Niel :-)  Can I just double check with you the following ...?
The external drive where my iPhoto library is located has three partitions - Time Machine Backup, Pictures (where the iPhoto library is located) and SuperDuper Bootable Clone.
When you say 'Remove the external drive from the list of items set to be excluded from the backup, and then add everything else on it' - am I correct in thinking that I should remove Pictures partition from the items to be excluded but leave the Time Machine Backup and SuperDuper Bootable Clone as excluded items?
On my 2TB external drive (the one I'm backing up to) there are 5 partitions - Time Machine Backup, SuperDuper Clone, Pictures, Photo Archive and Document Archive.  The Time Machine Backup is 700GB of which I still have 473GB available - when I include the Pictures folder that contains the iPhoto library that will use up another 148GB but I think there's still plenty of room to use it.
When you say if the partition contain the iPhoto library isn't dedicated to it it may be easier to create one which is, the only item I have on the Pictures volume is the iPhoto library so I think that it's dedicated to it.  I was going to add images from the Pictures folder on my MacBook Pro but haven't done so at this stage so I won't do so.  It wouldn't matter though, would it, if I copied the images from the Pictures folder on my MBP to the 'Photo Archive' partition of the EHD?
Thank you once more for your reply.

  • HT4614 connecting two displays on mac mini(late 2012)

I have a mac mini (on order). I want to use two displays as follows: connect one to the thunderbolt port and one to the hdmi port. Can I do it?

If possible steer away from analog VGA.
If you have DVI or HDMI supported monitors, you can use the supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter or a straight HDMI cable from the Mini's HDMI port for one monitor.
Then depending on the second monitor HDMI, DVI or VGA you will need one of the following MiniDisplay Port to HDMI, DVI or VGA Adapters connected to the Thunderbolt Port. Optionaly, if you had a monitor that supported Display Port, then you could use a MiniDisplay Port to Display Port cable.
Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (U.S.)
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • Can't connect iMac/Leopard with Mac Mini/Tiger and vice versa

This one has got me tearing my hair out.
I have an Intel iMac running Leopard and a Mac Mini running Tiger on the same Ethernet network. Both run (adjacent) fixed IP addresses with common subnet mask and gateway. Both access the Internet fine through a single router. But can I share files between the two?
Neither has firewall turned on while file sharing is enabled. I can see each Mac from the other but when I try connecting first I get 'The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.' Then on clicking OK I get 'This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.'
If I try connecting from Finder using Go - Connect To Server I get this error message 'The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://MacMininame" could not be read or written.'
Although I'm running Leopard on the iMac now, this also used to happen when I ran Tiger too.
    Many thanks - GeoffT.

    Fixed it!
I have Parallels installed on the iMac and it creates two virtual network adapters (Guest-Host and NAT) in System Preferences/Network. For some reason I'd foolishly contrived to manually configure the Nat adapter to the same IP address as the Mac Mini, hence the point-back to the iMac every time.
Guess we're all allowed the occasional foul up.....
    GeoffT.
